can I change the names of downloaded programs

Q: can I change the names of downloaded programs

I downloaded some programs and I dont know what some of them are because of the names, ie fdminst.exe and setupeng.exe to name a few.

I suppose I can install them to find out then uninstall if I dont wish to use them (or to save them). My main point is can I change the name to a more descriptive one, By the way i have just found out that the setupeng.exe is avast so if I change it to avast will it still work, and the same for any other program I download.
Thank you

Preferred Solution: can I change the names of downloaded programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Trying to free up some space on the ol' computer and since I'm a gamer, I like to keep all the games I got, I have them defulted (dunno if that's just automatic) to save on the D drive, but I have plenty of space on the C drive. Is there is a way to change that setting without too much headache.

Okay, so it's for my grandma, but I can't delete anything otherwise I'll never hear the end of it, since they were all paid programs downloaded from online.

Is there a way??? Please shine the light.

Ok, I know how to change the names by going to the control panel and editing the settings in the 'System' folder. I've done that already. My 'Computer Name', 'Full Computer Name', and 'Computer Description' have been changed to what I want. But now when I open the C:\Users folder in the administrator account, the main user's name is the name of the shop I bought my laptop from. This is the name I would like to change. The folder has a padlock on it and I've unselected the read-only function twice, but it didn't work. It asked me for confirmation, then permission, then it spent 15 seconds 'applying the attributes to the files. However, once it was finished, I hit OK and re-opened the properties window for the same folder and the 'Read-Only' function was selected again. Why can't I turn off the read-only function and how can I change this name?

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks.

This is on an Acer Laptop and has in the past few days been detected by a program called AntiVir. AntiVir says it is removed but it keeps coming back. When running the Trend Micro online Scan it is detected but can not be removed. I Went into the registry settings and followed the recommended steps to remove it manually as listed on Trend Micro's website but it is still present. It has hijacked her (my girlfriends)IE browser and takes her to some russian website that has "Cert: Server51. 2x4.ru" on the page even though "http://www.google.com" is listed as the URL. I suspect it's a single program that somehow changes names. It has shown up as TROJ_SMALL.UW and as TROJ_SMALL.UN and as some sort of dialer as well. It is no longer detected by trendmicro. Hello moebetta and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log.Let's try a different scanner and see what it finds.Download WinPFind2.zip and unzip it to your Desktop. It will create a folder named WinPFind2. Do NOT run the program directly from the zip file.Open the WinPFind2 folder and double-click on winpfind2.exe to start the program. In the File Options group click the Select All button. In the Other Options group click both checkboxes for Show All.In the AddOn-Options group click the checkboxes for:HKCU_IEDesktop.defPolicies.defSID_Run_Policies.def
to select them. Now click the Run All Scans button on the toolbar. this will take a little time to run. When the scans are complete click the Simple Report button in the lower right-hand corner to create a report file. Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button to post the information back here and I will review it when it comes in. hi, i want to replace vista with win 7. i don't want any remnants of vista so i'd to do an installation of win 7- full version. if i create a partition with vista[d:\], then install win 7 there will it be a "clean" install? if i then use disk management to switch c:\[vista] and d:\[win 7] will the computer boot to win 7?

A:change partion names?

Not exactly.

The correct way would be to copy your files out of Vista externally, make your factory recovery disks so you have a path back to factory condition, gather your program installers, then boot Win7 Upgrade version DVD.

The DVD will scan your computer at boot to see Vista allowing use of Upgrade version key up front.

Now Choose Custom install, then Drive Options to Delete all partitions, create New Ones, then Format before installing Win7 to the first partition.

When I try to change the name of my files, it tells me If i change the name It would make it Invalid? what happned!!! Help!!!!!! Thank you!!!

A:Help! I can't change the names of my Files!!

calm down it's a safety procedure. You need to make sure that you have the file extension at the end of the file for it to work in your program. For example

import.avi - if you change the filename to export then Windows won't know what program to open the file up because there is no extension. If you change import.avi to export.avi, then it sees the extension and renames the file.

So basically when you rename the file, make sure the .avi (or whatever the 3 letter extension is) is left when you rename the file.

I am doing some work for a Small Business and they have 10-15 computers (all windows xp pro) with random names, some of which are very similar. We were planning to change all of these but I am not sure how to go about doing that. All the machines are attached to a network that is a domain and the server is running windows server 2003 standard. Is there an easy way to do this without removing the computers from the server, renaming them, and reconnecting them? When I try to change the names on the system themselves I get a message asking for login information of some sort. I give it the information but it will not let me rename. Any ideas? Thanks so so much!

A:Change Computer Names On Network

I am no domain expert, but this is a general description of what you need to do.

You will have to remove each of the worksatations from the domain, log on to each workstations local account and change the name, then rejoin the workstations back into the domain.

If you have no experience in managing a Windows 2003 domain controller server, I suggest you consult someone who does. You can do more harm than good if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

Yesterday, while I was trying to install an old driver for my printer/scanner from the manufacturer's DVD-rom, the screen blacked out, leaving only the mouse pointer was visible. Gradually the task bar appeared, and I could reboot the machine as usual.

In the meantime, though, several of my hard drives had new names/letters (hard drive 'I' became 'J', and 'J' was renamed 'L').

Also, the media network sharing options I'd organized were suddenly reversed, and will have to be redone.

I'm not expecting an explanation, and I know I can change them back. It's just a bit peculiar.

I have, in the past, used a shortcut key or a combination of keys to change names in a list (column)to proper.Example: george to George, smith to Smith. The shortcut
will run through a cycle of 4 changes, one each time you
press the keys, as follows:
1st press changes smith to Smith
2nd press changes Smith to SMITH
3rd press changes SMITH to sMITH
4th press changes sMITH back to smith
I have used this shortcut in one of the windows 2003 office
prof. programs, Excel, Word, or Access.
I know how to use the UPPER(), LOWER() and PROPER()
functions but they don't use shortcut keys.
Can't remember how or which program I used it in.
The answer will be greatly appreciated.

A:Shortcut Key/s to change names to PROPER

If you're talking Excel, I know of no such shortcut. You could, however, create your own.

Something like this ...
Option Explicit

Sub ProperConversion()
Dim c As Range, r As Range
Dim currVal, lowerVal, upperVal
Set r = Selection
For Each c In r
If Not c.HasFormula Then
lowerVal = StrConv(c.Value, vbLowerCase)
upperVal = StrConv(c.Value, vbUpperCase)
If c.Value = lowerVal Then
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbUpperCase)
ElseIf c.Value = upperVal Then
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbProperCase)
c.Value = StrConv(c.Value, vbLowerCase)
End If
End If
End Sub
If you put this routine in a Standard Module, then from Excel hit Alt + F8, select ProperConversion from the list and hit Options, you can set a shortcut key from there. That would be the only way I know how to use a shortcut key for such an instance.

An advanced version of this can be found here: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/proper.htm

My Hard disk died, and I had 2 programs living on my desktop which don't show up on my Ghost backup disk, and I can't remember their names. Can anyone help me remember their names so I can search for them on the internet?

The first program lets you mod down your privileges when you're running mail & browser programs, so that if you stumble into malware it can't run as administrator.

The second program reformats email by removing '>'s and 'nl's so it doesn't look so awful when you forward it.

That's the problem with icons - you use them so much you don't have to remember the names of useful programs.

I just set up a new laptop with Windows 10 and an activated subscription to Office 365 Home with two users and was about to also install Office 365 on a desktop with Windows 8.1 that belongs to the same family, and now they told me that they want to have three of the user names changed - two on the laptop and one on the desktop.

I know that it is in theory quite easy to change user names but I also read that this in praxis sometimes brings problems with it. And I don't know whether changing the user names would also change the user folders or whether the folder names would remain unchanged (which would be not good).

Can somebody tell me more about it, please? Is it possibly better to create new users, move the data over, and then delete the old users? Would deleting two users on the laptop and then creating two new users and then connecting these new users to Office 365 (and OneDrive) mean that I have used two of the five user accounts for OneDrive with 1 TB storage, or would I then have used up four such users?

Thanks for your help!

A:Best way to change 4 user account names on 2 computers

Name of the user profile and the profile folder always remains the original one. If a user was created as LarryLaffer, that will be the name of the user profile even after you change the username to JohnDoe. In other words, in the future this user would sign in to Windows with username JohnDoe and have his user data stored in profile folder C:\Users\LarryLaffer.

The simplest way to do what you want to do is to sign in to a PC with your own admin account, remove all wrongly named accounts and create new accounts named as the users want to.

My stupidity caused the problem. Hope someone can figure an easy way out. I can fix it the hard way.

I have a folder of word documents (hundreds). My wife has a similar file (also hundreds).

All the documents are recipes. Mine all have the word "recipe" as the first word of the document title. My wife's does not.
example: Recipe Gooey butter cake.doc vs. Gooey butter cake.doc

I want to combine the two files and they will automatically alphabetize themselves in a single file....if.... I can delete the word recipe from one set of documents.

I have tried to change permissions and it does not work. The 'Read Only' box changes itself to being colored in even after I change it. I tried to do a system restore and get this message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer?s system files and settings were not changed

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore

Also, when I did a little checking, a file got deleted from my registry:

Don't know what it is and haven't found anything helpful online. Please help.

I downloaded some mp3s and in Nero I burnt them to CD. The problem is they ended up on the CD without names or any meta data. I ripped them into my library with Windows Media player 10. Of course they were listed as unknown in Media Player. I went into Explorer and changed the album name. But the change didn't show up in Media Player.

I have a couple of questions about this. How can I make the change I made in Explorer show up in Media Player? Can I add information when I rip?

A:How to change the names of songs Media Player 10

I have used windows media player to sync up with my mp3 player. To change the song title, artist, etc I opened the media player, clicked on library and then right clicked on the song and selected edit. At that point, you can edit any information for that song.

Have a couple of issues with Outlook Express that I'd like to solve.

First, I (apparently) made the mistake of choosing to have the full name appear in first-middle-last order each time I entered a new contact. It looks nice in the e-mail address box, but when you export the address book to a .csv file (which I do frequently as a backup), the names are ordered exactly the way I set them to appear -- first-middle-last -- instead of the way I want them, LAST, FIRST MIDDLE. I realize I could open each record in the address book and switch the display to that. . . but I'm talking about an address book that contains 570 entries! Is there any quick way to change all of them to last/first format?

Now, before you respond, I'm aware that I could (probably) use the separate last, first, and middle fields in the .csv file to create full names ordered by last/first/middle, then import that back into the address book. Except for one *&@# thing: Although every entry in the address book contains a separate first, middle and last name, for some reason not all of those appear in the .csv file; they don't export. Why that happens, I haven't the foggiest, but it does. Those separate fields make it into the .csv file on only slightly over 1/2 the records. And that's my 2nd issue: Why do the separate name fields not export in about 1/2 the records?

Hi there I have a Billion 400G and I have 3 user name's of different ISP's and I normally use the program that came with the router to change it but now it all of a sudden doesn't work!!!! please help me fix this.....see images...normally I would use to log in to my router. Not sure if the IPv6 shouldn't have internet access cant remember how it was before.

A:Can;t use router program to change user names

What's actually not working? It's a bit unclear. Is it that you can no longer log in to your router? Or that you CAN but some things no longer work? If so, what?
Please be clear about what you are trying to do... change your ISP name?
Why? What's changed prior to things going wrong?

I have a network of about 127 computers. I just came on board and I am fixing all of their screw ups. Besides going to each of the machines and manually changing the workgroup and computer names, is there a way to go in from my machine and change the computer name and workgroup? I looked at a couple of the machines and they are on random workgroups, etc.
The computers are as if they brought in personal desktops and the users assigned admin passwords themselves. There isnt any uniformity. I guess thats what I am trying to create to begin with.

I eventually want to put on active directory and group policy - this will be much easier then. But is there an easy way to do this in the mean time?

Thanks for any advice,

Welcome to Vista Forums!! We are here to help!!!

Are you downloading to the right drive (ex. D:\)
You might be trying to download to an older drive. When downloading something, use the files explorer and choose your desktop. Make sure that you use the extended window when choosing where to download to.....

Let us know if that helps,

Hi, I am sorry if this is a very frivolous request. But it is more for convenience why I am asking this as it does get somewhat annoying.

But when I chose "save as" for a notepad .txt document I have been writing all the time the option automatically comes up as

I then have to type in the name of the document I wish to save it as. However what I was wondering, or more hoping, if there are actually any tweaks or registry changes I can make so when I click 'save as' in notepad. The notepad 'save as' screen automatically pops up and assigns the first line of text inside the .txt file I have just typed as the possible name of the document to save.

This is similar to how Microsoft Office uses the 'save as' option, and for time saving and convenience I was hoping someone may know if there was possibly a way to set Notepad to do this automatically too.

A:Change how Notepad Saves Document Names using 'Save As'.?

Hi Anthony1uk,
Unfortunately such a thing wouldn't be possible without a rewrite of the Notepad application itself.

I have what i hope is a quick/easy question to answer. Whenever i transfer files from a CD-RW disk back to my hard drive, the names convert into upper case. This doesn't happen from the floppy drive or cd-r disks, only cd-rw & only on transfer back to the hard drive, not in transfer to the disk.

I have a HP cd writer (getting fairly old now) with adaptec direct cd software. i'm running windows 98. I DON'T have the "allow all upper case names" option in folder options ticked and it also happened on my old computer and is still happening on my new computer (same cd-writer transfered to the new computer).

Does anyone know how i can stop it happening? i know it's not a huge issue, but i've just bought a new computer (still getting it up & running) & i really don't want a PILE of files all with upper case names if i can avoid it, so really hoping it can be fixed
