Hibernation Malfunction

Q: Hibernation Malfunction

Hey everyone, it's been a while since i've been having a hibernation problem, i'm pretty sure it happened after i updated SP1 for my Win 7 ultimate x64, this is how it goes:
- i choose hibernate (power button as i've set before OR hibernation option from the shut down menu), NO "windows is preparing to hibernate" shows up, display goes off but the HDD is still functioning for a few more seconds, then supposedly "hibernation" happens, and when i turn the PC on again, it's as if the whole "hibernation data" to be restored is completely dumped, and it's asked of me whether to start the windows normally or in safe mode bla bla...

have done sfc /scannow & CHKDSK, nothing is wrong, the pc is pretty much always up-to-date, but i also do poke around the registry (not manually, with CCleaner) and only to clean up after an uninstalled app, might it be a registry string mishap?! (oh look! it rhymed! )

help me plz?!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Could someone suggest how to fix this problem with my hibernate recovery? When I awaken my system from hibernation, I find that often my keyboard does not function at all. The keyboard is connected to a USB port, a USB-3 port. In order to restore the functionality of the keyboard, I do a system restart. That fixes it. Apparently, the recovery from hibernation is somehow faulty. Any ideas how to fix?

A:Hibernation recovery w/keyboard malfunction.

Most default hybernation settings include shutting off the power to the usb ports; edit that setting so that the USB ports remain active and see if that helps. USB3.0 is very susceptible to this because they carry much more power than USB2.0

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

A:Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

I've had this problem for a long time. When I put my computer in hibernation, sometimes when I wake it, it hangs at the user select screen, or it just shows a black screen. Sometimes I can reset the computer after it has hanged, and try again resuming from hibernation, and many times it will work after a couple of tries. Other times after resetting I won't get the prompt to try again with resuming (the other option is to delete hibernation data and reboot the system) but I will get the usual screen that says that Windows was not shut down correctly (with all the options for safe mode, etc). If I cannot resume and I get the screen with safe mode and all the other crap, I finally log in I get a notice that there was a critical error, in the details I see BlueScreen and other data, but I actually never get a blue screen. In the dump folder, there are no dmp files related to the hibernation hanging.

Anyway, when it happens, I see several Event 18 WHEA-Logger in the event viewer, about 6 of them every time.

What's weird though, is that I literally have NO problems with this computer other than this. The only times it hangs is when I resume it from hibernation. I can play games or run stress tests with or without overclock and the system is 100% stable. But there is some problem that prevents it from resuming from hibernation correctly, so every time I use it is basically a gamble because it has like 50% chance of working.

PLEASE, help me fix this problem. I tried EV... Read more

I have encountered this a few times and I thought of collating past experiences of other users on their successful attempt to restore the eco friendly hibernation feature. I personally favour hibernate than sleep as sleep slowly bleeds your battery away.

I just installed a 512GB M4 Crucial SSD into my laptop.

For my case, it happens when I tried to resize the C: partition to a smaller size using a third party software called minitool partition wizard. Windows native disk management somehow restricts the minimum size for C even though I have like 80GBs of free space. After successfully resizing it using partition wizard, i lost hibernation feature.

After searching the internet for solutions, many suggested powercfg cmd but this didnt work for me. I have also tried other recommendations and those didnt work too.

Since hibernation needs to store the OS states and apps into a file before shutting down, I suspected the pagefile.sys got corrupted due to the resizing and did a chkdsk with fix. It found some errors and fixed it. After a successful chkdsk fix, I got back hibernation feature! I also recommend to leave the vritual memory to system managed as I read from other posts that hibernate needs about 4GB of pagefile to hibernate.

Hope this helps others who have similar problems. On the hand if you have successfully restore your hibernation feature, please post your experience here. Thanks!

Hey, I recently bought a brand new Tune-Up Utilities 2012 software.I disabled hibernation file using tune up utilities. That time I don't use hibernation function. But now I realized how hibernation is a better option then shutdown. So I renabled hibernation file again using tune-up, as you can see in the screenshot. But now when I hibernate, the computer locks with a blank screen instead of hibernation. Also the file 'hiberfil.sys' is in C:/ folder. What to do now, how to renable hibernation?

A:Cannot renable hibernation. Hibernation not working.

Manually enable it in your power scheme I would suggest.

Hello all,
I hope this is the correct place where to post my little but annoying problem. I searched already but couldn't find any answer to my question: every time I resume my system from hibernation it resumes, it displays the desktop for a couple of seconds and then goes in hibernation status again. It is not a big problem because it starts within a minute and a half anyway, but it starts being annoying. Basically I have to resume it twice, like the first resume goes bang.
I do not have clue of when this started, I switch on the pc straight after waking up and sometimes I am too sleepy to remember if I resumed it or if I was still dreaming about doing it
Definitely the problem persists since the last month or two.

Any idea, please?

DEP processing is flaky. Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

No 'restart needed' popup is displayed....
?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....
?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).
I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other. WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).
Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options.
Thanks.... :-/

First and foremost, please post your computer specs. Posting computer specs definitely helps us troubleshoot computer issues more efficiently. What is the brand/model of your laptop? Do you have warranty on your laptop? It's possible that the fan inside your laptop is dying.

Hello all,

Well, to get right into it, my PSU conked out. I shut down my computer (Start > Turn Off Computer . . .), it didn't automatically turn off like it normally does. So, I tried the power switch, nothing happened. Finally, I flipped the switch on the PSU. Obviously, it was off now.
The next day, I went to turn it on, and it didn't. I tested the power switch, it was fine, so the next thing to check was the PSU. Took it to a computer service store, they tested it, it was dead. I sent it back to the company, they sent me a brand new one. And that brings us to today.

I installed the PSU in my computer, hooked it up to everything (mb, harddrive, video card, CD-Rom, fans). I pushed the power button, the PSU lit up (it has a lighted fan on it) and the fan went on, this lasted about a second, then it shut off. Well, then I went through step-by-step:
- Connected only the motherboard to the PSU - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard and the larger fan - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, and the harddrive - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, and video card - turned on, stayed on, did not beep. (apparently it was beeping because there was no video output.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, video card, and plugged everything into the back of the computer - turned on, stayed on.
- Connected everything listed above, plus the smaller fan, turned an... Read more

A:PSU Malfunction

Although there are things like power surges and lightning strikes that could kill a PSU, there is really no reason to try to come up with a scenario for what happened. Often they just die and it can be without warning. I think you are saying that now everything works. If the new PSU suddenly quits then you may have a problem that needs to be figured out.

The fan set up looks pretty standard.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.
Thanks!

Hello everyone, first time poster, so sorry if I mess up ^^

Anyways, I just got a new laptop, specifically a Lenovo 80XS0086IX Ideapad 320-15ABR. Initially it all seemed fine, but as I used it I noticed several problems: 1) it cannot remain in sleep mode for long. After a while, it just switches off abruptly. I have tried several combinations of lid closed/open, power cord in/out, but eventually the result is always the same. 2) When powering it on after these shutdowns, the trackpad does not recognize multiple-fingers gestures, requiring a restart. 3) The disk usage frequently goes up to 100% despite no ongoing activity. 4) Sometimes, pressing the power button to power it on results in the disk starting, then abruptly stopping, then restarting again several times, before the laptop finally starts. 5) The system sometimes freezes for several seconds, even the cursor stops, only to resume any input movement later.

I have tried everything in my knowledge: I updated the BIOS, the HDD firmware, installed all Windows updates, fresh-installed Windows, but nothing seems to work (although the HDD thing apparently solved the "always 100%" problem). I ran both Windows in-built check-disk and third party programs to check for errors on the HDD, but none showed up. I'd be really glad if it was something I can fix at home, since I really need this machine to study, so sending it to be repaired/replaced back at Amazon is my very last option due to time. Have plugged in my own keyboard on USB and ps2 mode and it all just stops working as soon as Windows installation starts running.

What to do? Any suggestions? Am desparate. Please

Neither of my cd-drives manages to read/copy any big files in win2k!

I download every service pack, update, patch for windows, motherboard, graphics card and even the sound card but it still refuses to copy files exceeding some certain magical amount of information unto the harddrive.
BUT, both CDs work like charm in win98.

It somehow seems that it is the win2k standard issue cd drivers that is the problem, but MS haven't posted any new ones, and neither has the hardware producer.

The CDs are one acer atapi cdrw 16x10x40 and a cd 36x of unidentified origin, both without any drivers included, both experiencing the very same problem.

Help would be much appreciated!

id install MS anti spyware beta and run the browser hijack tool to restore all your IE settings back to normal

Also i wouldnt have that may programs running it could be any number of conflicts, norton is a horrible program, what is viewport search?
id get rid of all non essential programs and have a clean out. you have translators, web page printers and screen shots takers, loads of usless rarlyused stuff, do you really need to have all this stuff running all the time?

personally id do a full format and start again and only install the programs that i actually use if my pc got in a state that bad :)
but if you dont want to get ms antispyware here http://www.filemirrors.com/search.sr...e&size=6860424

Hello all.

In the process of replacing an AT power supply on an AMD-K6 driven baby tower, and switching around the hard drives (master to slave and vice versa), I wound up with everything working & detected at startup, and then a little message like so:

*** CPU Cooling Fan Malfunction ***
Press any key to continue.

I would point out, by the by, that the CPU cooling fan is turning like a dream. Is this a BIOS thang? I dunno.

Thanx for your helpx.

My keyboard is acting strangely. A couple of the letter keys are malfunctioning. For example: both the e and r will skip when using my word processor. The r will also change the paragraph writing alignment from justify to center or left. While in the web, the e will skip and then open up the search window while the r will skip and close the web page. This is all odd and very aggravating. I have also changed keyboards twice, and all contained the same problem. Any answers would be helpful. Thanks.

A friend handed me his system box to have a look at thniking his cd drive is bust. When he clicks on the cd drive to access the inserted disk the message received is:

d:\ is not accessible
THE DEVICE IS NOT READY

I have checked the device manager for this piece of hardware and there are no obviuos problems - infact it states its working properly. Perhaps I have to dig a little deeper ?

Be grateful for any help on the matter

My speakers worked fine forever and a day. Then I shut down my computer and moved it from my office to my house. I installed all the wires and power to all components and to my surprise, the speakers do not work at all. No sound, no nothing. I have shut down and unplugged everything and put it all back together again and still nothing. I have a green light on my speakers (telling me that they have power) and the plug is color- coded on the back of my computer. I have a 7500 compac presario with jbl platinum series speakers. PLEASE someone have an answer so that i can return to listening to my cds and watching movies on my pc. Thank You.

A:speaker malfunction

Verfiy that your speakers work on another setup or you can try some headphones in the speaker jack.

If that's not it, verify that sound is turned up and nothing muted in the mixer control panel.

Look in device manager for any problems

Make sure your audio card didn't come loose in its slot.

In control panel under sound and audio devices or the equivalent check that everything looks right (correct audio device, speakers enabled)
