Q: HP Chromebook 14 y u h j n m keys not working

I have had the notebook since Christmas but during the last 24 hours I began getting a faulty response on the y, u, h, j, n, and m keys. Sometimes they would work on the first try, sometimes I would have to hold them down for several seconds before they would register. Now they have all completely stopped working. I looked on other forums but I cannot remove the battery from the laptop or do a hard restart since it operates on Chrome OS. Is this just a cleaning problem or is there something possibly wrong with the technology inside? -Megan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I have had the HP chromebook for about 3 months and the numbers 6,7 letters m,n,u and sometimes random others do not work.  I cannot even log-in since my password contains one of the letters.  So frustrating and I do not think I am the only one.

Is your chomebook still under warreny?  If ir is you can send it back to HP and they will send you a box to return the item.  If not I don't really know what to tell you.   You can try and manually rotate the keyboard and see if that will reset it otherwise you are SOOL  - sorry....

Daughter's Chromebook is about a year or so old and the keyboard has stopped working properly.  Some keys work, others don't. Type the letter K and get Ki, type the letter s and get sxw, type the letter T and get nothing, and so forth. Tried the Refresh+Power thing but that failed to work. At one point thje keyboard began operating without being touched (!) which suggests a stuck button but couldn't tell which. We're wide open to suggestions.

I have two chromebooks here with certain keys not working. One of the chromebooks is a 14-x000na, and the other is 14-x006na. On the 14-x000na, the 6, y, h, n, 7, u, j and m keys are not working, and on the 14-x006na the 8, i, k and , keys aren't working. I have reset to factory settings, but this didn't do anything. Any help would be appreciated, as warranty has ran out so HP won't help me. Thanks.

Hello! I purchased three refurbished C710-2833 Chromebooks from Groupon in September 2013. Just got to opening the third box since it was intended to be a backup of either of the other two if they failed. Well, one of the other two failed (human error; c'est la vie) and as 'luck' would have it, the third does not function as it should. 14 months later, I am clearly beyond the 90-day warranty period. The third device, when first attempting to log in to my Google account, wouldn't recognize some of the keys I pressed. I plugged in a USB keyboard to log in, and tested the onboard keyboard in a new Google Drive document. The keys that are broken are (or at least, seem) random. With that said, I have the following questions:Has anyone else experienced this same issue with (seemingly) random, broken keys? I had a problem with my HP Chromebook's keys intermittently not working--the y, m, n, etc.  They would work, then not work, and it was very frustrating esp to log in b/c I could not get my password typed in. I thought I would need a new keyboard, but my wonderful ex husband thought we should try clean and reseat the keyboard connector to the motherboard.  The top panel assembly was removed (after removing the bottom case screws)..   ----see http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Chromebook-14-x000/7277301/model/7547744/product-info?lang=en... HE cleaned the keyboard connector with isopropyl alcohol, and re-connected that connector and it worked. This may not work for everyone, but try this b/f you buy a new keyboard.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad 13 20GL Chromebook. The numbers on the keyboard, except for 5, are not working. I have done everything the forums suggest... and finally just did a Powerwash- Factory reset. The keys are still not working. My computer is only a few months old. Is there anything else I am not thinking of doing? It is currently under warranty. Should I just take it to a Lenovo authorized service provider? The closest one to me is an hour away. I would appreciate any help.

Okay, I'm sorry if this isn't the correct section for this question, but I'm in urgent need. The HP Chromebook I have currently isn't working. When I try to log in, whenever I type my password, it always puts in different characters then from what I typed in. Also, it will randomly shut off and has a struggle turning back on. To make matters worse, the up arrow key keeps glitching up. Please help.

On my Chromebook 14 CB3-431 - The keys on the left side of the keyboard (Q, A, Z) are no longer working.  I have tried rebooting multiple times and logged in as Guest and still these keys will not respond.  This is for my high school age son who uses this for homework, which not having the 'A' key especially pretty much renders the chromebook useless.  It was just bought in August.   Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have had this chromebook now for about three months, and all of a sudden three keys do not work. I don't know what to do, and I cannot afford to replace a BRAND NEW laptop. It is extremely annoying, because the only way to get these letters to work is to apply quite a bit of force. If there was a way to take the keys off and clean them, maybe it would help, but someone help. !

You can power the Chromebook down by pressing the power button for 20 seconds. Then pressing it again to restart it. Here is a link to help adjust the keyboard input on your Chromebook. You could reinstall Chrome OS which takes it back to factory settings. Hello all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with the search feature but so far haven't found any info. I figure to post while I keep looking.
So, I just received my CB 13 and it's a beautiful machine. But when I play audio, at or above 50%, the keys resonate noticeably. The higher the volume goes, the worse it gets. To me, that's totally unacceptable. I used a tone generator to help me pinpoint it and it appears to come from the keys. If I put my hands over the keyboard, it goes away completely. Remove my hand, and it resonates a lot again.
Has anyone experienced this issue with the CB 13? 
Also, the trackpad seems a little finicky. I had trouble click and dragging - it would go all over the place.
How does Dell handle exchanges btw? I hope this isn't a common issue across all CB 13s :(

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....

I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.

Any ideas please.

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

I am running a P70 20ERCTO1WW (Win 7 Pro SP1) sometime in the past month or so I have had an issue with the function row. (I ran a mix of Windows and Lenovo updates about that time.) Symptoms:Mute key does not illuminate the in key LED; but the system tray volume mixer does show mute and unmute.Mic Key does not illuminate the in key LED.Fn+F1 will mute the speakers and illuminate the LED in the Mute key across the keyboard.Fn+F3 will increase volume and unmute a Fn+F1 Mute.Vol+ Key will increase volume but not unmute a Fn+F1 Mute.The in key LED were working on the Mute key and Mic key.Are the Fn+F1-F4 are operating on a lower system or hardware level?Are the Mute, Volume -/+, Mic keys on a higher OS level?Fn+F5&F6 (display brightness) are working as expected.Fn+F7 (Projector) no responseWinKey+X functions as expected.Fn+F8 (Radio) no responseThe Bluetooth radio with the Fn Key during the period of updates.This is a problem because I haven't been able to re-enable the Bluetooth radio.Fn+F9 (Config) no responseFn+F10 (Search) no responseFn+F11 (Task Switcher) no responseFn+F12 (Task Switcher) no responseThe missing LED makes it more difficult to maintain proper sound discipline.Lenovo Update and Windows Update are current. Any ideas?

A:Fn Keys and Audio Keys not working after updates.

You probably updated the power management driver.  Its affecting a lot of people.  Its affecting OSD and Fn keys.  See below post.  The solution is to ROLL back the power management driver.

Hi, Try the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

Because webcam and microphone share the same module, so it may be the cable got disconnected. If webcam works but Microphone fails, it might be other HW issue that requies HP's supports to check out; but no matter cable loosen or HW breakdown, both require tearing-down your device to do the repair. Thanks

It is a blank screen and yes it is charged. Having trouble fixing it. I have a Mac computer and I try to download the BIOS firmware and it will not let me. Help!!

So it appears after doing some research that the 14"  HP Chromebook has a lot of issues with the keyboards not working. My daughters is a little over a year old and completely quit working today. I can't even power it off!  If this is a common issue why not own up to it and take care of this HP? I have a service plan through Walmart and they are sending me a package to mail it back in 5 days and then who know how long it will take to get it back from there. In the meantime my daughter will be so far behind in school and homework that she will likely never catch up this semester.  Ugh!  Extremely frustrating. My daughter is so upset and crying and she did nothing wrong!

I had my chromebook randomly shut off while I was using it, the model CB3-131.It wouldn't turn on until I hard reset it about an hour later, then when it turned on they keyboard would not work, except for the power button. Any idea on how to fix this?

I have two HP ChromeBooks here, purchased in late '14, and recently both have had issues with their Trackpads, number one's Trackpad doesn't want to work at all, can only use the ChromeBook with a mouse connected. Try booting into recovery mode to see if the keyboard works when the OS isn't yet loaded. If that works then maybe a quick power wash will clear it up.
