14z 5423 locks at Dell Logo - cannot get into BIOS

Q: 14z 5423 locks at Dell Logo - cannot get into BIOS

This is my dad's machine, and it locks at the Dell logo before the progress bar even starts. I don't even have the chance to get into the BIOS or boot options, nor into diagnostics by holding down Fn while starting. I've even tried with a USB keyboard.
It starts super fast, so I discharged the stored power with a paper clip in the hole on the bottom, but that did nothing. I tore the whole thing apart, reseated the RAM and tried each stick by itself, reseated the battery, unplugged the CMOS battery for a few minutes, and I'm out of options here.
The funny thing is, he had this for 4 years before this problem occurred.
Is there anything left? If there was even a way to sideload a BIOS on this board, it would need to be one with Secure Boot off., and I can't imagine where I'd find that.

Preferred Solution: 14z 5423 locks at Dell Logo - cannot get into BIOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

"reseated the battery, unplugged the CMOS battery for a few minutes "

Just making sure, you're doing it correctly.....
1. Remove or disconnect the coin cell battery ( You can buy a new battery at your local Walmart or dollar store for about $2.00 - $5.00)
2. Press the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain all residual power from the system
3. Assemble the unit, hopefully your computer starts normally

Instead of holding down the Fn key, you tried tapping the F2 key(BIOS) or the F12 key(Diagnostic) at boot up? If no, then I like to suggest you follow the steps below:
1. Power off the computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously. Hopefully, you'll be able to see the BIOS screen.

Note: If your system is windows 7, you can also try tapping the F8 key - Advance Boot Options)

my Dell Inspiron 14z is stuck on the Dell Logo at boot up.
it was working well yesterday, but just become freeze at boot up
I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

From the DELL technical support website, I downloaded the BIOS Update. On executing the file it asked me system will reboot.
The system has frozen and I cannot restart my machine. I am using Windows 7 (64bit)
Please help to restart/restore old BIOS settings!

A:Laptop freeze after BIOS Update for Dell Inspiron 14z 5423

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Try powering up again.
If that doesn't get it going, either the mainboard needs to be replaced, or you need to have a shop un-solder the BIOS chip, flash it externally and then resolder it.

Hi, I have several problems with my laptop. It began when it sometimes stuck on first logo. I did recovery but it didn't help. So I tried to flash new bios A13(I had A06) from windows. After restart I could see only black screen. After unsuccessfull trying of everything I disconnected CMOS battery to reset bios and since this act I get 5 beeps at startup even if I changed battery for new one. I finally boot to windows but: Bios stayed unchanged(A06) and my battery is now on 0%, it says charging but it doesn't charge. I did DELL diagnostic tests from boot menu with 100% success. In these tests battery show 1%. I tried to flash bios again(from DOS, v. A08) and the same result, black screen at first (for long time)and after boot BIOS stayed the same - A06. Thank you for any help or advice. Martin

A:DELL Inspiron 14Z 5423 - 5 beeps, battery 1%, cannot flash bios

Hi Maca76,
I’d advise that you load defaults in the BIOS. Please follow the steps mentioned below to load the BIOS to defaults to check if then you are able to update the BIOS to A08 version on the system.

Reboot the computer.
When prompted during POST, press the <F2> key to enter the setup screen.
On the System Setup screen, press the <F9> key.
Press the <Enter> key on Yes to Load Optimized Defaults and restart the computer.

Also, Check if the AC adapter is detected under AC adapter type in BIOS.

Dear Sir(s),
I have a Dell Desktop Optiplex 780 Series, using a 3/4 Years. But suddenly today after switching power the Monitor display ONLY dell Optiplex 780 Series LOGO. It does not run next step for Operating system. I am in trouble.

A:Optiplex 780, locks up at Dell logo

Hello deltaepsilon613
I really haven't had this issue with my dell OptiPlex 780 which I bought when it was new though you may be in trouble. If you've flashed any rom's to the bios they might have not installed correctly so you'd need to contact dell. Now, if the dell logo stays and the bar moves very slowly then you might have disabled quickboot in system setup meaning your computer might be doing a full boot and taking forever. lastly if this is not the case press F12 while you see the del logo then your machine should beep and you'll see some options select your hard disk and the machine shall boot.

Hi All ,
I have Dell PC with Dell Bios , and i want to add some logo in the bios loading in the startup of the PC...
is there is any ideas ?

A:Adding logo to Dell Bios

Hi Abouyara,
The blue Dell logo is stored in the BIOS. There is a way to change it using a BIN editor, which if done incorrectly will ruin your computer. So I don't recommend it.

Thanks for writing to us.
When did the issue start? Was there any hardware or software changes done recently?
Please remove the power cable and then remove memory modules and then try with one at a time.

I tried to go to safe mode it shows the files loading, but it won't go to the windows screen. I have a installation cd for windows but some of the files won't load properly. i tried making a CD-RW copy on my reinstallation for windows, but my disk won't read 4 files.

If a repair install did not help, probably your best bet is a clean install. You can take the drive out to salvage any data you cherish that is not backed up.

Recently I bought a new LCD screen for my Inspiron 14z 5423 that I bought back in 2012. Recently the screen broke and I went to the PartsPeople website. I got a new screen with ease. Then I saw that my laptop was sold with a Core i5 motherboard with AMD Radeon discrete graphics. My laptop has the Core i5 integrated graphics motherboard. The website said that the motherboard is compatible with my laptop. I purchased the motherboard along with the screen. A few questions I have is if it actually will work with my system. I have been searching for the fan needed for the new motherboard, but are there other things I will need.  My laptop has been updated to Windows 10.
If possible, can someone tell me if this is actually compatiable and if it will work, or if there are things I will need to do. Any information would be great.

A:Dell Inspiron 14z 5423

You'll need a new heatsink assembly (the one from Intel GPU won't fit the board with AMD).
You may also need a larger-capacity power adapter -- the system with AMD graphics will draw significantly more power than the one with Intel graphics.

Hello, I currently have a dell new inspiron 14z, with 512gb hdd and a 60gb of cache-ssd (if that's the right term)I'm planning to buy a Samsung 256gb ssd and install it in place of the hdd - and since the Windows is installed in the HDD, this means that I'll have to reinstall Windows again.
So since I'm a newbie to all the ssd thing, I have a few number of questions -
1) Would I need to change BIOS settings? It's currently set at Intel RST setting (I don't remember the right term, but it wasn't AHCI), and it uses rapid storage technology using the micro ssd. Would I need to disable it to reinstall Windows?
2) Since I don't have a recovery disk, is it ok if I just download Windows from http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/windows-7-sp1-iso-download/  and install it in the USB?
Thank you so much!

A:Installing an SSD in a Dell New Inspiron 14z 5423?

Hi Andrew Pai,
mSATA drive uses the SSD technology to make the system faster. If you replace the normal mechanical hard drive with SSD hard drive the IRST technology feature would be nullified.
However, to use the SSD on the system please change the SATA operation mode in the BIOS from IRST to AHCI. You will need an operating system reinstallation disc to install it on the system. You can use the link below for placing a request for operating system reinstallation disc (USA only).
If you are not able to place a request for the disc from the link above, then please send me a private message with the computer's service tag, Name registered during the system purchase and email address so that I can check what can be done. This is going to be quite a long description. Flashback to about a year ago. My son and I were trying to hook up his computer to a dell external monitor. It only provides hdmi output, but we had a USB to the phone line thing. We thought we could hook it up by connecting the computer to the monitor with the phone line port in the computer to the USB port on the monitor. MAJOR MISTAKE. The whole computer when black. The screen wasn't lit, but the power indicator was on. Nothing else. We ended up fixing it, but don't know how anymore. Before we did this, on startup, we saw the black screen with Dell Inspiron on it. Afterwards, all i see is lines on the screen.
Now fast forward to now. Recently (last 8 months) when I turn on the computer, I get the lines on the screen and I hear this beeping. Accidently happened in a library. Librarian thought I had a bomb or something I was able to fix it by connecting the computer into a external screen by the hdmi. The screen would then light up.
Then a couple hours ago, all broke loose. I went into my room, hit the power button and got a response of the same lines on the screen, but a beeping. But then I noticed several more but different now green colored lines on the left side of my screen. I took it to my tv thinking that would fix it and got the computer screen up on the t.v. But not on my pc. Still beeping and not lightning up. I looked up on the internet some solutions and I decided to boot my computer in safe mode by using the ... Read more

I recently bought a new Dell U2515H Monitor which is capable of 2450x1440 resolution.
I connected it to my Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 laptop using HDMI (there's no DP on the laptop).
The 5423 comes with two display adapters: an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 and dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7570M, which supports 2450x1440 resolution.
However, Windows only allows me set the external monitor's display up to 2048x1152 resolution.
Does this mean it uses the integrated card for the display?
Is there any way to fix this?

please help me to fix this, i don't know how to do next..
Thank you for your time.

A:Recording Audio Problem Dell Insipiron 14z (5423)

Hello. You have selected the correct one. Microphone Array is the internal mic. It is a pair of mics located in the webcam assembly at the top of the display screen.

The things you can try are
> Reinstall the IDT audio driver from the Inspiron 14z 5423 support page. When you get to that page, first select your operating system by clicking on the Change OS selector:

> Adjust the mic volume and boost. Here is a screen shot of the path, but on yours start from Microphone Array:

> If you have a program in your list of programs named Dell Webcam Central, open that program and find the microphone settings. Make sure the mic is not turned off.
If none of those things fix the mic, it could be damaged. To fix the mic array would require replacing the webcam.

Hello All,
So for years I've been having trouble with my Dell 14z 5423 on and off, It started with the display driver stopped responding, but would recover on it's own and seemed to be okay if I used the Microsoft basic display driver not Intel's until I moved to Windows 8 and 10 and the thing would just randomly freeze on me. It was intermittent enough for awhile that I put up with it as the laptop was out of warranty. About a month ago the thing started freezing way more often and when checking the event logs it appears that the display driver quit responding. I then used Dell's stress test and the computer would occasionally freeze or shut off.
One night I let either the normal or graphical stress test run over night and was woken up by loud beeps coming from the room where the computer was. I originally thought it was cause it was running on battery as I believe there's a warning when the battery is about to die so I plugged it in and went back to bed. I believe it was about 2 hours later or so the thing woke me up beeping again so I got up and turned it off.

The next morning I tried to replicate the beeps but no luck. I downloaded speedfan to see if it was possibly shutting itself down and it did seem to be running a bit hot so I opened the laptop up and reapplied thermal past on the heat sink and cleaned the fans out. No change in the temp it was running at and still had the freezing. After reassembling it I noticed it I pushed on the top case near... Read more

My laptop inspiron 14z couldn't start and got 3 beeps and black screen, I had windows 10 installed and Bios A13.
The BIOS update A13 seems to be the problem. With a downgrade to A12 I fixed it. And you need to do that in ms-dos mode cause the bios executable doesn't let you do a downgrade on windows) I first thought that the problem was windows 10 but the computer had the same problem once I installed windows 8.1.
The difficult part was to start the computer again, I followed a youtube tutorial (portugues) to disassemble the laptop and it started, so you can flash the bios. Go youtube and search for inspiron 14z 3 beeps. (notice that in my case the laptop started some times at the 3rd time I pressed the power button, some times I needed more that 20 attempts but finally it booted. You don't need to press any F keys convination or whatever people says, it will eventually start and I don't have explanation for that)
Once in windows make a bootable MS-DOS USB using for example Rufus app. (MSDOS, not FreeDos, I couldn't flash the bios with freedos option) and put the bios in it. BMWZ4A12.exe, can be downloaded from dell website.
Then boot UEFI setup restarting de laptop and press F2 at dell's logo. Maybe you can't access the UEFI when you restart, if you can't, you can access the UEFI using the Recovery setup in windows (search recovery, click recovery setup, go advanced options, troubleshooting, change UEFI settings, restart) go to BOOT section an... Greetings HP Forum. Shut my pc down 2 nights ago (6/10/2016) and when I started it last night (6/12/2016) it booted to the HP logo and locked up there. 1. I switched monitors with a known good monitor with same results. It should be noted here that the monitor has an adaptor connected to it to allow for connection to the DVI sockets (2) which are the only monitor connections available. 2. I tried the F2 and F10 keys to enter the respective sections and nothing happened. No lights lit on the keyboard. 3. I changed out the keyboard with a known good key board and tried F2 and F10 again with the same negative results. 4. I tried performing a Hard Reset on the system, with no results. 5. I cleaned all the vents, fans, and case - inside and out with canned compressed air, with no results. 6. All the fans are working. 7. Power supply light is green and stays on....no blinking. 8. There wasn't any beeps coming from the PC at all before it locked up on HP logo. I don't know what else to do. I thought about changing the power supply with a power supply that I have in an old HP Pavilion a1473w, that power supply is 300 watts and so is the power supply in the HP 500-123w and the connections seem to be the same. Well that's about it.Any suggestions or guidance would be most appreciated...because I'm stumped! Thanks

Hello Everyone,
I am having a very frustrating strange problem. I'm a computer technician so I'm not new to computers by any means and have access to parts and software to try different things and believe me I have. Here is the problem. I have built now several different computers, all brand new parts, and once every four or five boots the system will slow down to a crawl at the windows logo. The blue bar at the bottom will slowly crawl across. If I leave it overnight it will boot into windows and work normally from there but takes literally HOURS to do this. This doesn't happen with every machine but has with three now out of the last 20 or so I've built.

The machines were all running Windows XP Home SP2 or Windows XP Pro SP2. They were all in the same case style. They all were running Asus M3A motherboards and LG DVD burners. The rest of the hardware I have tried different brands and sizes. (Nvidia & ATI video cards, Kingston 667 ram and 800 ddr2, Cpus ranged from 4200 x2 to 8450 x3's to the quads as well.

Each system I had to rebuild with different parts completely and reload windows to solve the problem. I have tried Ram, Ram slots, Dvd burner on and off, no extra cards, different video cards, several different new power supplies, new motherboards, new cpu's, new hard drives, fresh loads of windows and grounding (tried outside the case). Nothing seems to give any clue as to what is causing this problem.

Basically, I wanted to know if anyone else experien... Read more

System booting to Windows 8.1 just fine. After upgrading to Windows 10, the boot process stops and locks on the HP logo screen. A keyboard key must be depressed before it will begin loading the OS into memory and displaying the Windows Logon screen. Through no fault of the user, this symptom occurs and HP wants to charge to have it fixed. Why? The user followed the instructions from Microsoft for upgrading. Then the HP causes this symptom. Please help. Thank you.

When I boot Vista, 4 on 5 times, I have a black screen with a corrupted white line at the top after the loading dots and before the animated logo like this screen and the computer hangs on this screen and sometimes Vista load NORMALLY and the computer behaves normally without any more hangs. until I shut it off.

The corrupted line at the top could change of appearance and length from one reboot to another...

Here is my config:

Dual Core E8500 @ original specs (3Ghz)
Nvidia 9800GT 512mb NOT overclocked
4 GB RAM at 800Mhz
Bios in safe or optimized setup
Vista 32 bits SP1

A:Black screen (with top white lines) locks before animated logo

I just discovered that now, it's becoming an inconsistent boot, after few tries with different boot setting (in F8), it may or may not enter Vista normally, and never with the same option... but I can ALWAYS enter the safe mode boot and the one with networking

If it's hardware related, it seems suspicious because once I'm IN vista with a successfull attempt, there is NO MORE trouble: I can stay on Vista for long period, work with very demanding softwares (like photoshop) or 3D games without any more hangs...

I already tried without success:
- a full defragmentation
- Hijack software
- two anti-malware programs
- the recovery repair disk
- CCleaner
- disable the UAC

I'm really desesperate...

Notebook has begun to lock on reboot at Windows logo.  If I disable the HD6490M object in device manager, the PC boots fine, but only as Standard VGA.  Tried S55098.exe & S55092.exe driver from HP site.  PC still locks on reboot.   Tried installing the Radeon Crimson 16.12.2 Catalyst package from AMD's site; it freezes about 80% through install. This notebook has run fine for years up until a few weeks or so ago.  No other software changes.  Even swapped out a new HD with WIn 7 Pro 64-bit instead of Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  Any ideas?

I Purchased this Laptop few years back. Now it stopped working suddenly. Am in India right now but when i consulted the Dell Exclusive store here they say its not repairable. Kindly suggest. I never fell down nor got damaged by any external source. I wanted to get it repaired or may be send it back to recycling if possible.

A:Service Tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> || DELL Inspiron 14z 5423 || Laptop Dead

We cannot assist without knowing  why the shop said it's not repairable.
How old is "a few years"?  Any system more than three years old likely isn't worth a major repair such as a replacement system board -- even if a board is available.

This is a low-end system -- if it requires a mainboard change, it's likely not worth the repair, as the shop has told you.

It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.

Thanks for the help in advance!

A:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

I would like to ask for your assistance because I'm already out of ideas how to resolve this issue. Right after I powered up the laptop, it will get past the DELL logo screen, then it will be completely just black screen. I wouldn't even hear any activity from the CPU fan, HDD and pressing the Caps Lock doesn't lit up the LED. The LED indicators on the side are only displaying the power indicator, but none for HDD, Battery and Wireless.
Here are the steps that I have done so far:
1) Removed the HDD and Battery, then press & hold the power button for at least 45-60 seconds to disperse the internal voltage. Then attach the Battery, but not the HDD.
2) Press and hold Fn and then the Power button, hoping to boot me up to the ePSA Diagnostic Utility
3) Press F2 or F12 while booting up
4) Re-seat the memory and also clean with a dry tissue
These are the procedures that I have done but nothing has changed. It still displays blank screen right after the DELL logo.
I do hope that you could assist me on this. Thank you so much!

Hi recently my Dell 2330 wont boot up properly. I press the power button and the light comes on the button and i hear the fan. The screen is a brighter black then after a few seconds the screen seems to go off but still power and fan running. Ive spoken to Dell and done all what they asked. Then today out the blue it came on as normal. I went to run a diagnostics test from a link Dell sent me and it asked me to restart the computer. I did and then it  did what it did before and has not come back on since. They have said it could be the motherboard. Any other suggestions ? Thanks

Dell N5030: W7 wont start. Dell logo > black screen. How to restore?

Hello friends

Please could you advise me. My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N5030 Inspiron laptop. She has had it for about just over a year now. Dual-core Pentium, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit. She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem:

1. You press the power button
2. The Dell logo appears along with the F2 & F12 options for Setup & Boot Options
3. This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. Thats it.

All this happens in the space of 6 seconds (power-up to black screen). Nothing else happens, no Windows logo screen, no Microsoft logo, nothing. Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button.

My friend was desperate because she had over 740 family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose. I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that

Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly. The hard drive was good, no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine. So its something with Windows 7.

Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition. The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the "Repair your computer" option is.

When I pressed F12 al... Read more

Prior to this, I was gaming and my screen froze with many blue and white vertical lines across. I held down the power button to restart, but it only loads till the Dell logo with the dots circling then the screen will flicker with some random lines across (see attached image) and then it goes completely black after.

I tried many times to start and in 1 out of 5 tries, sometimes the Dell logo appears with "Please Wait" at the bottom and there are options to Troubleshoot, I am able to enter the Safe Mode with Networking.
I tried doing a system recovery to an earlier date in Safe Mode and it ran till the part when it had to restart with the Dell logo, the same screen with lines appear again or sometimes just a black screen after the logo.

I have a problem with my new laptop and it happens only sometimes. It is around 1 month old and it had this problem from the beginning . The laptop is a DELL INSPIRON 3552
1. DELL LOGO appears
2. Screen backlight is ok
3. Windows won't start ( window's logo doesn't appear ) and if i plug an external mouse the cursor is on the black screen.
If I shut down the laptop from the power button and the start it again it works. It's very random. Once I had to restart the laptop for 3 times before the windows started.
Any ideas ?

A:DELL Inspiron Windows screen black after DELL logo

Thank you for writing to us!
As we understand that the system doesnt not boot and just goes up to the Dell logo and after multiple restarts the system works fine.
In that case ,Can you boot the system into " Safe mode " and check if the same happens..You can also perform a system restore and also check for updates pending .

A:Can`t Upgrade Dell E6410 Bios - Dell BIOS Flash window does not work

Well, i follow the folowing steps from this forum (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19413136/19971740.aspx#19971740):
1. Install UNetbootin from synaptic2. Run it and create a FreeDOS USB key.3. Copy the exe BIOS update file to the USB key from inside ubuntu.4. Reboot into BIOS setup and change the boot order to boot from USB5. Boot into a live freedos session. * The USB key will offer to install freedos on your hard disk. DONT - that is ubuntucide!* Don't use himem or or that other memory thingywhatsit - just straight freedos6. C: 7. dir8. run the update
And i could install the Bios Upgrade. Now are upgraded to A13.
Aniway something is wrong, because from windows OS, the installer does not start !!!

Hi all,
I have just acquired a dell Inspiron 5547 laptop. I believe it originally shipped with Windows 8 but the previous owner has upgraded it to Windows 10. I went into the control panel of Windows 10 and chose the option to remove the previous users data and reset the pc. However mid-way into the reset I received an error saying "there was a problem while resetting your pc" and then gave me a few options I selected "continue, exit and continue to Windows 10" however after this the laptop will not boot. It sits on the dell logo and then goes black then returns to the dell logo. I am unsure of what to do, and when I press F8 I cannot access recovery. Do I need to reinstall Windows 10 from a USB? If I do so how will I activate it as the original Windows 8 product key is not on the back. Thanks
