Admin share disable or enable?

Q: Admin share disable or enable?

My computer started acting funny after watching videos online and getting tons of pop-ups. Some of which claimed I could have a potential virus. Now I know this came from a site and I should never read into it. but it had me wondering.
Then i noticed all of sudden some of the websites I was looking at like would stop opening and would be unavailble.
Now I have AVG Virus Protection on my computer. It is letting me know that my PC health is not good cause the administrative share is enabled and it says I should disable it.
i do not fully understand what this means and why this was an issue in the first place. What should I do? Do I enable or disable and why?

Preferred Solution: Admin share disable or enable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Team,

I was trying to figure out a way to block admin share access over windows domain network.
These are my requirements:

Desktop Support Engineers should have administrator privileges on all domain joined windows workstation machines. Domain Users should not have administrator privileges on their workstations.Desktop support engineers should not be able to access admin share over the network.Domain Admin must have full access on Admin Share.
So I have added NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE as a member of Buit-In administrators group and I have added Desktop Support Group as a member of NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE.
Which actually blocked admin share access over network for Desktop support engineers. however I was not able to control Domain Users getting Administrative privileges on domain joined PCs from above settings.

How can I control this admin share access?

Thanks in advance.

Let me start by explaining what led to my problem.

I work for an electric utility, and we issue Panasonic Toughbook laptops to our linemen containing our mobile mapping and AVL (Automatic Vehicle Locating) software. They are all running Windows XP Professional SP3. Our AVL software requires an internet and VPN connection to our AVL server at the office (we currently use Verizon Air Cards and the Cisco VPN client to achieve this). Since implementing this, we have found that Cisco VPN and the Verizon Air Cards do not work well when the wifi network adapters are turned on (or enabled). When they are turned off (disabled) everything works nicely. We can't just disable the wifi NIC's and call it good either because our user's need the faster wifi connections to perform database syncs in the mornings (via hotspots inside each garage bay). Once they are all synced up and out of range of our wireless network, the wifi NIC's are no longer needed. Since the wifi NIC's and Air Cards don't get along, we have been having our users turn the NIC's off using a hardware switch on the Toughbooks cassis. However, some of our older models (CF-29's to be exact) do not have these hardware switches. Our solution was to create two batch files and place them on the users' desktops; one that turns the wifi NIC on, and one that turns it off.

This brings you up to my current problem...

There is a user, Dad, with admin privileges on a Windows 7 machine (this is me).

There are other users, kid1 and kid2, with no admin privileges (my kids ;-) )

I want to let kid1 and kid2 access the contents of a directory in my userspace C:\Users\Dad\ . In fact it's not at the top level, let's say it's C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud\photos (because it is). I want to let kid1 have read/write access and kid2 read only access.

I navigated my way to C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud and then right-clicked on photos, clicked on properties, clicked on the sharing tab, and did what looked like the sensible thing (gave the kids the required access).

I then logged in as kid2 and attempted to find my way to C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud\photos. I got there -- but on the way I saw far too much -- kid2 can see a complete list of the names of all files and directories in D:\Users\Dad (not ideal) and also names of all files and directories in C:\Users\Dad\ownCloud (which is not acceptable, because that is my entire life in the cloud).

Is this expected behaviour when sharing directories in Windows? If not, what did I do wrong?

If so then this is no good and I guess I need a workaround. The problem is that I am not at all sure that I can move the directory, because it part of a cloud storage service (like Dropbox, but a different company) and as far as I know that directory ...\ownCloud\photos (the one I want to share with my kids) must be a subdirectory of ...\ownCloud (the one that I really don't want my kids ... NTFS Folder Permissions

I'm thinking if you create a symbolic link in C:\Users\Public you may be able to let the kids go directly to the shared folder. Perhaps then you can deny Traverse permission to block the parent folder. But I haven't done it myself.

Stoik Joker, who has the NTFS permissions page in the above link, is also a regular poster on DonationCoder.com. You may be able to ask for clarifications there. And of course someone with SysAdmin type experience may chime in here.

Does anyone here know how to enable the administrative share in Windows XP? I am talking about the c$ in particular, this is the one I want to access. I am a complete newbie when it comes to using administrative shares. But after some research I have managed to enable the administrative share in Windows Vista. But that doesn't help my XP computer.

For those of you looking for this information, here's a short how-to on enable administrative share in Vista:

Open Regedit.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Make a new DWORD value.
Name it LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
Right click it and click Modify, and then change "Value data" to 1.

Now you should be able to access the administrative share of your Vista computer.

Practical example of what this does:
Open the Run prompt (Win+R)
Type in \\\c$ and press Enter.
You should be able to browse through the file and folder structure of the C: drive on the computer for which you have enabled the administrative share access, as shown above.

Well, of course, you will need to change the IP address above to whatever IP address your computer is having.

How about that Windows XP?
So that's administrative share in Vista for you... So! How do you do the same thing for a Windows XP computer?

From what I have read on various websites this shouldn't be necessary for a Windows XP computer, because administrative shares should b... Read more

I'm trying to use PsTools to remotely send messages to clients (using the 'msg' program) regarding the network (e.g. a server is going to reboot). When using it in command prompt, it works for some machines, but for others, it errors about not being able to use the admin$ share on the target computer. I tried accessing the share via Run..., but again, it failed. The targets are all Windows XP. How do I make sure the admin$ share is accessible by the domain controller?

A:admin$ share

Usually any share with a $ on it is a default admin share and is
limited to the local computers admin acount.
You probably need to change them to standard shares by unsharing
it and clicking apply, then share it again and apply.
That should change the share to one without the $ limitation.

I am trying to enable the administrator account in Windows 10 Pro but without much luck.

Whatever option I try I am left with a request asking me for an 'admin username and password', which I don't have, but the only active box available is for 'No' anyway.

If I use the 'command prompt' route then I am not offered the same options that are indicated by the guide I am referring to.

Tried the Administrator tab in 'Local Users and Groups', where the Admin. account is ticked disabled but it won't let enable it.

It seems I am blocked at every point from enabling this and I can't carry out certain actions on the PC until it is.

I will be eternally grateful if there is someone who can shine some light on this. I am obviously doing something wrong but I don't know what.

I have got one of my client has got a simple office network with three PCs (2 desktops A and B and one laptop C,,,,,all of them have got Vista Home edition).

Those desktop are connected through a modem router.

He bought a computer B recently and it has a Trend Micro Internet Security installed on it,,,,,,,a USB printer is connected to this B PC to be shared with A and C.

The other two PCs have not got Trend Micro Internet Security (I am aware of security implication , this is not the issue of our thread)

the printer is shared but A and C can not ping and can not print.

I am sure that the problem lies with the Firewall setting for Trend Micro Internet Security, because when I shut down it from A and C I can ping the B and I can print ,,,,while when Trend Micro Internet Security is running I can not ping B and I can not print.

I tried to search how to configure firewall to enable printer sharing I could not find that

Hi everyone !

Recently I discovered that Windows has a built-in default disabled super admin account ( for those who did not know like me I provided a link , but there are many in the Internet , above )

First an "introduction":
I suppose , looking at your config ( if I am wrong please tell me ), that most of you use an admin account ( that one Windows give you when you log in the PC for the first time and you are the only user ).
I don't.
I use ( even if I am the only human user of my PCs) a standard user ( I mean a user without admin privileges ). And I created a local admin account (protected by pw) , so when I have to run something that requires admin privileges, UAC ask me that PW ( like the UAC that you see prompts in some videos , but I fill a pw instead of simply clicking Y/N).

As you can read also in the link I provided , that super is used usually to troubleshoot problems .
As using a standard account is an improvement in security ( MS suggest to use that , at least in Italy ) ..
I was wondering if it would be the same for super admin : so enable it and obviously protect it with a pw( like I protect the local admin with a pw request at every UAC prompt )
Actually I ask this out f curiosity , because I feel already pretty safe with my config .

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for reading

A:Super Admin: did you enable it ? ( pw protected )

I hope I am not duplicating something here. . . . I did look - Honest!

I ran into an interesting problem and found an easy fix.

First: I wanted to ENABLE AHCI because (supposedly) it improves HDD performance. (It also enables a host of other interesting features.)

I discovered the trick of setting the START paramater in the registry key:
from "3" to "0" - and then making the switch in the BIOS.

I tried to switch back, and simply resetting this start value to "3" doesn't work.

The issue here is that there are actually TWO keys that control the IDE/AHCI interface choice:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci
When the system is in IDE interface mode, the respective start values are:msahci's START value is "3"
pciide's START value is "0"
When the system is in AHCI interface mode, the respective start values are:msahci's START value is "0"
pciide's START value is "3"
It is entirely possible that setting the START value to zero in the key representing the interface type you wish to use, may cause the corresponding key in the other interface type to automagically switch to "3". I do not know this, nor have I tested it.

What works for me is setting both START values to the values that correspond to the interface I wish to use.

It should be trivially... Read more

A:Enable and/or Disable AHCI

Hi jharris. Welcome.

First: I wanted to ENABLE AHCI because (supposedly) it improves HDD performance. (It also enables a host of other interesting features.)

For me, the reasons to enable AHCI are Native Command Queuing and Hot Swapping, hot swapping being the most important to me.

As far as switching back and forth, I could imagine issues arising from that (including confusion as to what mode I was running in at a given time...).

But if I needed to do it as a utility to convert drives to vhd's, I would consider a dual boot, with the AHCI disabled boot just a simple OS with whatever utilities I needed to get the job done. Keeping it simple would mean a quick boot to desktop and a small partition.

I use my Win Vista laptop at home and the office.

I use wifi at home and wired lan at the office. My laptop does have any settings in the TCP/IP properties. Everything is at default.

Every time I I try to use it at the office I have to disable and reenable the Lan connection from Manage networks, otherwise I do not get Net connectivity (except local lan).

No problem at home.

Since everything is default it picks up my IP from DHCP and gets other settings same way.

Why do I have to Disable and Enable the Lan connection before it starts accessing the Net.

A:Enable /disable Lan connection

If you put the laptop to Sleep or Hibernation before disconnecting the cable that may the cause. Try disconnecting the cable first.

The adapter/computer may not be "signing off" the network properly. Make sure you have the latest ethernet driver.

If the laptop is not rebooted from one day to the next, and
the work router or server is reset while the laptop is away, and
the lease time is long enough for the computer to think it still deserves the "old" IP, then that is a problem. Ask the network administrator to shorten the lease time, or shut down when you transport the machine, or live with your work around.

noticed the other day when I was trying to minimize what I have on my C drive ssd that the pagefile took up around 11GB and I did a Google search but I don't feel that the answer I got from there enlighten-ed me at all, I'm still wondering what to do.

A:Disable/Enable Pagefile?

You can easily change the size of the page file to something a lot smaller than 11 GB if you are concerned about space allotted to it.

Discussing whether or not to eliminate it entirely is useless. You can find opinions on either side, with each side positive that the other side is composed of morons. "I did X and haven't had any problems...........".

Would you spend much time trying to convince someone of anything about religion? If you would, then Google and experiment all you wish with the page file. Put it on some other drive, some other partition, make it any size you want, or do away with it entirely.

But don't expect to be "enlightened". Do what you want. If you don't like the results, do something else.

Our organization recently invested in a large batch of 250 G4 notebooks. I'm wondering if there's a way to quickly enable/disable the touchpad, modify something in our group policy, or distribute a driver update or something to allow for this option. Due to the environment many of our staff are working in (frequently out in the community or even operating off of mobile hotspots in their parked vehicle), many users don't use a mouse, but would like the option to turn the touchpad off while typing to avoid misplacing the cursor. Naturally, they'll need the ability to easily turn the touchpad back on without the use of a mouse in this case. As a result, I don't see navigating to the mouse settings to disable the touchpad as being a viable option, as they wouldn't have the ability to turn it back on when they were done typing. I'm used to seeing a Fn + F key option to disable the touchpad, but this doesn't seem to be available on this model. Is there a solution that would result in functionality with that level of simplicity? If not, what other options are there?

Does anyone know the answer to this? I have created a workgroup, my desktop and a laptop, both using XP pro accessing using same netgear router... I have created an account on the laptop (the one i was to connect to) called luke and this has been added to the admin group.

Now I login onto my desktop as luke so i figured the laptop would let me access its admin$ share? i can access the laptops basic share folder (shareddocs)... but when i try to connect to the laptops admin$ a "connect to" screen which shows the username set to "guest" which is greyed out and cant be changed! I even added guest to the admin group and set a password to see what would happen but still no difference

Greetings all.

Here's what we're working with...

Windows XP Pro SP3 machines.
Workgroup environment connected to our company domain via Sonicwall VPN devices. Each workgroup computer has a WINS entry so we can resolve names to IP's.

I can ping the PC names, but when trying to access the administrative share, the PC is not found. I know i overlooked some mundane detail, and to be honest, i need a hand since my brain hurts.
