Windows xp pro-installed serial port card not sure if it is causeing a com port probl

Q: Windows xp pro-installed serial port card not sure if it is causeing a com port probl

Need some advice a quick as possible.

Windows XP Pro
ofc had a built in serial port go bad, it was hooked to a charicter generator (don't no how to spell charicter) for a tv channel.
Installed a Controller Card with two serail ports PCI Multi I/O Controller Card, it didn't show up in the device manager was having problems getting the driver to work. says to load driver first then put in the pci card. Anyway it wouldn't work. The port that was built in (that went bad was on com 1) When the new card didn't work I used a usb with a serial adaptor and it went in fine and showed up in the divice manager and it said it was working and it started out on com 3, I no each time you plug the adaptor into a different usb port it goes to a different com port. That isn't a problem cause it would stay in the same port. Anyway device manager said it was working we changed the charicter generator to com 3 but it wouldn't work. We no the cables are good. I then got a PCI Card with one serial port instead of two and installed it and it show right up in the device manager and said it was working and I for get what comport it was on but changed it to com 1. that port didn't work either. Finally brought in another windows xp computer and hooked everhthing to it and it works. The xp computer I brought in had no serial port so used the same usb to serial adaptor that we had used and it work the first time. Show up in the device manager just like on the first computer but this time worked.

My first question is could the drivers of the first double port PCI Controller card be causing a problem in the first computer that wouldn't let the serial port work, I am not sure how to uninstall the drivers of the first double port card since it doesn't show up in device manager. They had this problem one other time on a computer the charicter generator was hooked to the serial port went out it was a built in one and we installed a single serial port pci card and it took right off and worked fine right away. They got rid of that computer and have newer ones with xp pro on but have had them for a few years and the charicter generator always has worked on them,

Since the charicter generator works on the xp computer I took in it leads me to believe it is a driver, or com port problem that it isn't comunicating. Othere then that everything works fine on the computer. I have this feeling that it is somethng to do with that first double port card that was installed. It never showed up in device manager and I have this feeling that maybe the drivers that were put in are causing a problem any help would be much much appriciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My new card is not working. The CD that came with it doesn't even recognize my new PCI card. It's a DVI, and I have a DVI dual to VGA piece where it can turn the DVI output into VGA. I thought perhaps it had arrived DOA from e-bay, until....I went into Device Manager. Problem is, in my Windows 7 Device Manager, under OTHER DEVICES? My PCI Serial Port has a yellow question mark next to it. I learned from Windows XP that this means there's a problem with my component. Hence my new card won't work until my PCI Serial Port is straightened out. I've tried to click on it and update it, but when I do that, Windows 7 says UPDATING...and then it says DEVICE did not update successfully. So it seems this is something I can't do through Windows update, or something Windows update won't do itself. Anyone else had this issue? Seems to be driver related.

Ever since I installed Windows 7 (64-bit), the Device Manager shows under Other Devices / PCI Serial Port / Properties / "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)".

I've update the drivers for my main-board (ALiveNF6G-GLAN) with the files from here and for my graphics card (GeForce 6150SE) and chip-set (nForce 430) (v15.49) from here, but the PCI Serial Port driver is still reported as not installed.

Deleting the device (and letting Windows re-detect it) doesn't work either.

I'm really frustrated by this problem because I suspect it might be the cause the Windows doesn't enter Sleep/Hibernate mode correctly (e.g., the CPU fan keeps running).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS. Please ignore the system specs below this post. Those are for my PC. This problem is on my wife's PC.

A:PCI Serial Port not installed Code 28

No idea what a "PCI Serial Port" is. (Serial port off the PCI bus?)

I'm not sure that you need to do anything about it, but see here:

Intel driver support for the Q43 chipset used in that PC seems to end with Windows 7. Perhaps drivers for that OS will work in 10, as they did in 8.1.

Hi all, I'm quite desperate! In the middle of the sea with computer not working. I need to connect my laptop with windows 7 to a gps (Garmin 72H) to down?oad data. The Gps has a serial port and OFF COURSE my laptop not. I have a convertor COM-USB with driver but is not working. With XP I could create a virtual com port but I'm not able to do that with Windows7. When I connect the cable in Device manager in Other device a USB-serial controller is popping up with question mark. Usually there was an advanced bottom and from that I could create a virtual com. How can I do with Windows 7? Thank you very much for any suggestion.

AlluraBlue Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! I wish I had good news for you -- but I don't ... HP does not provide Win10 drivers for your model PC, so basically, you should NOT have forced an installation of Win10 because HP does not have the drivers needed to ensure full operation of all the hardware that came with your PC. Your best option is to return your PC to its original OS version, that way, you will be able to continue to use all its features.

My roommate had NO security on her laptop and so I downloaded a firewall and AVG and a Spyware program. It uncovered three trojan horses, one with the file name ian_monitor.exe that has completely torn her computer apart and is an information Trojan, (I recently discovered). I also found a false program Spam Blocker Utility which had been on her computer since purchased and who knows what it was doing. I am no longer able to access the internet because the USB doesn't sense the Verizon hardware for the internet port. I un-installed the Firewall and re-installed windows firewall, I also purchased a trojan remover and file scanner which removed 928 registry viruses, 7 memory viruses, and 59 file viruses. PLEASE help if at all possible. I have already tried to PC recover for the day and no luck there. I am continuously getting a pop up message on her computer, but I really can't tell you what it said because my roommate will not let me try to fix it anymore with the belief that I was the meaning behind her problem w/ the laptop. A:USB to serial port adapter not working on Windows 8

Welcome to Tech Support Guy

What is the serial device you are trying to connect
What is the make of the USB to serial adapter

The problem is that the processor chip - YES they do have one, is not in many cases compatible with Windows 8, especially 64 bit, as of course the actual working of the adapter is achieved by connection to the USB port and then transmission of data from and to the USB hub.

Not knowing what you actually wish to connect your best first port of call is here to see what is on offer

Several RS232 devices are having difficulties functioning on Windows 7. They worked fine on XP.
On XP they used the serenum.sys and serial.sys files as a driver. But, on Windows 7 they use the same files, but these files are 6.0. And not 5.0 anymore.
Even when I adjust the baudrate settings, etc., the devices still don't work. Could it be that these devices are too old to be used on Windows 7? Is there a way to verify this?
Dispite the difference in version number of the two files, is there a way to bypass this? And how can I check if my COM1 port is alive?
Thanks in advance.
Yours sincerely,

I recently acquired an Optiplex 790 with an i5 2400 3.1GHz processor, 8GB of ram, a PNY 125GB SSD. and a Hitachi 1TB HDD.
I installed a clean copy of windows 10 on it and all went well except the PCIe Slots wouldn't recognize my TV tuner card.
After a looking into it I found the that the PCI Serial Port driver is missing and that this may be the most likely cause of my issue.
To fix it I took the following steps:
1. Downloaded and intstalled the latest chipset drivers from the DELL website. These drivers are labelled for windows 10 use
2. Down loaded this driver DRVR_WIN_R296702.EXE for the foxconn PCIe add in card driver.
3. Reinstalled windows 10 to see if the drivers would automatically update.
Unfortunately none of that worked, the only other option i see is to possibly run the fox conn driver install in compatibility mode, but I worry that it won't work.
Another possiblity is to install windows 7 install all the needed drivers, then install windows 10 over top to see if that fixes it. Or leave widows 7 as is.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and resolved it? If so how?
Has anyone been able to upgrade fully without issue?

That driver is not foxconn.
It is also likely that you need to install CHIPSET drivers before PCI or PCI-E devices are "seen". Note that WT64 is WINDOWS 10

Hi I have a Dell Latitude 3570 laptop running WIndows 7, plugged into an E-Port Plus dock. I need to use the serial port on the dock, but I can't find any instructions for how to access it. Does the port automatically get associated with a COM port, or do I have to do something manually? Device Manager says this regarding COM ports:

I assume it's COM1, because that port only shows up in Device Manager when the laptop is plugged into the dock. I can send data without errors to COM1 but it does not appear to come out the other end of the serial cable. Do I have to do anything to enable or configure the port? Thanks in advance!

To be able to test a COM port, you need something on the other end.

Hello all. I was talking on skype and lost internet connectivity while talking. I received the error above (Firewall Settings HTTP (port 80) HTTPS port 443 FTP port 21 error message). I am running a laptop with windows XP and IE 7 and my antivirus is AVG and I also have Ad-Aware.

I'm not much of a computer person but I did some research online and tried a few things: I turned off the option on skype's advanced settings for it to listen on Port 80 and then rebooted. I also ran a command, 'netstat -aon' and did not find a listing of 1270.0.1:80/443 or which seems to imply that nothing should be affecting port 80 or 443.

I also downloaded firefox and it cannot access the internet either. The only way I'm able to access the internet at the hotel I'm located at was to call the hotel's tech support and they had me go into the LAN settings of internet options and manually select port 8080.

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, this has me baffled. My Bell Internet Security Services Activation (I just installed it on a computer not used for some 4 or 5 months) popped up a window saying "Waiting for Internet connection"...and waiting and waiting. But my Netgear wireless connection to the router in the house indicates "very good" signal strength, which I thought meant I was connected. Obviously not!

I tried opening IE. "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" (much as I expected)

Clicked the button which was showing on the IE cannot connect page "Diagnose connection problems" and followed the instructions. The final diagnostic is "Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the ports HTTP...etc." Where on this earth are they?!

I checked the Windows Firewall settings and found it "off (not recommended)" so I switched it on.

I re-ran the diagnostic on the IE page and nothing has changed.

My question is:

How do I check the settings for HTTP port (80) and HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21)? Also what do I set them to?

Many thanks, in advance, for a solution to my problem!

A:Solved: Help! Settings for HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443), FTP port (21)

So you just installed an Internet Security Suite which has a Firewall built-in and then you enabled XP' built-in firewall? I am baffled as to why you would do that. The new software you installed has to be blocking it somehow. I would search their website for known issues.

Or just uninstall it and use something different.

I saw this problem listed, but My issue is a bit different and the previous solution didn't work for me.

Please forgive me if any of my posts offend, as I am new to this site. I don't intend to be rude, but my ignorace may anger some. Also forgive the length of the post, I wish to be thorough as to avoid getting possible solutions that I have already tried or are not relavent.

I recently had some repairs done on my computer which involved reformatting my hard drive and when I got it back started having trouble accessing some internet sites. Unlike the previous person's post with this issue i can still access the internet and 95% of sites, but a select (and seemingly random) few give the IE cannot access website error. When I run the networking Diagnostics for Windows XP get the following error:

Check the Firewall settings for the HTTP Port (80), HTTPS port (443), and FTP port (21)

The only firewalls I know of on my computer are Windows and my router (both of which I have disabled) i have also tried Firefox and it craps out at the same exact sites.

In addition to selected sites, some third party programs are having trouble accessing the internet. This includes Nortons Installer (I haven't been able to install my antivirus yet because of this error) and I haven't been abble to register Microsoft office after I installed because it cannot access the internet for ID Key Verification.

To enable the serial ports you are going to get the BIOS password or override it. What make and model PC is it? Also what BIOS and version is it? You can see them after powering on the PC while it is booting.

At work I was using a laptop with a serial port, which I used to communicate with an electronic device. The application used for the communication between the laptop and the device is designed to use a serial port.
The problem is I have now got a new laptop without a serial port (this seems to be the thing now!?) and I'm trying to use the USB port instead. My laptop doesn't like this at all!
Is there any way to configure the laptop to make the application think that it is talking to a serial port when it is in fact connected to the USB?
Any pointers anyone?

I am trying to connect my fiancee's palm pilot via serial port to my computer running windows XP. I have tried both serial ports on the back of my computer (one has a picture of a monitor and one has a picture of what reminds me of a lego Oh, and these are 9-pin ports I believe). Anyway, I can't get the palm pilot to sync with the computer. After looking at the FAQ section on Palm's website, it sounds like the reason it isn't working is because of conflicting COM/IRQ addresses.

Can someone please tell me the best way to see if there are any COM ports available on my computer and, if there's not, how to free one up? Thanks in advance!

A:Serial Port Help

If the plug has a pic of a monitor on it, the socket is probably for the onboard Video. I'm guessing that you are not in the right area for the serial ports?

I need to turn on my serial port and I don't know how to access the controls in the BIOS...
I have a Compaq Presario 5108US desktop. I have disabled the Windows XP "welcome screen" during reboot so that now I see the commands when my computer boots up. I don't know the proper keys to push to allow me to access the BIOS controls.

Can anyone help?

Sorry I didn't get back to you on the other post, been crazy around here...

Anyway, press F10 repeatedly when your computer boots up to enter the BIOS. After you reach the BIOS main menu, see if you can find a menu or setting for Serial Port. It is probably under the menu, Integrated Peripherals, or a menu similar to that. There should be an "Enable/Disable" option.

Let me know if this works for you

So im going to try to explain this as well as i can.
I am running a windows 7 and I have a radio I would like to program. The main issue is that the program needed to program it is for DOS. So I installed DOS 6.22 On my VMWare virtual machine (VMware Workstation 8.0.0) and ran the program. Now the radio connects with a serial cable. but since I am using my laptop (lenovo ideapad z575) It does not have a Serial port. So I am using a USB to Serial Adapter (Trendnet TU-S9). But DOS will not recognize it.

What I am wanting to do overall is to make my windows 7 computer assume that my USB adapter is a physical Serial port so that I can go into VMware and attach a "physical" serial port to my VM. any Ideas or other suggestion i could try? thanks and sorry for the read.

A:USB serial port help

Did the trendnet USB to serial adapter come with drivers? Usually devices like that will. If not you can find them on the website most of the times. You may have to just install the drivers on your machine, and within the VM.

On an Acer travelmate 518TX serial port I feed signals coming from a DSP. The signal is processed by a charting software that builds up the page line by line.
Happens that the image makes, at regular intervals a small jump to the left. So doing the final page is make up in stripes.
The software manufacturer states that some othe program is interrupting the incoming data stream from serial port, suggesting to disabling the Power Management System. I did it without any result.
My question is:
Can someone address me to what could be devices or software that commonly sample the serial port ? In order to investigate on how to stop this chopping activity.
Thanks for support

Hi - I am selling a sewing machine that has a serial port on the side but most people use USB sticks these days to transfer embroidery designs into their machines. The convertors I have seen have a male connection whereas I need a female connection. Does anyone know if there is a convertor that has a female connection? Thanks!

A:Help with serial to USB port

Hi judysue2, and welcome to TSG.

Are you talking about the USB connector or the 9 pin D-sub serial connector?

There are 9 pin serial cables that come in all combinations of male and female connectors on each end. There are also 9 pin D-sub "gender changer" blocks available.

EDIT: The serial port on your sewing machine is most likely designed to connect to a computer running specific downloading software for the machine. A general purpose serial-to-USB adapter would not have the built-in software needed to read the memory stick and send the data to the machine.

I have a second older computer for my child, I do not have funds for purchasing new one for about a year. His mouse sucks. It's an old serial port mouse. There seems to be no PS2 port for a mouse. I bought an optical usb. I have a serial to ps2 connector, and a ps2 to usb, all plugged into one another lol. Have floppy for new optical. Reboot. No detection of a mouse. Go to run>A:/setup.exe, it goes to install but doesnt work as it does not detect a device. Do I need an additional driver for the serial to ps2? PLEASE tell me I can do this, I would really like to do this for my kid, if there is a way to config this, please help me? Thank you. He is on win98se. I sure hope I can do this! I would make him one happy kid for sure! ( I cannot stand that serial mouse either !! )
