How to switch off laptop screen & password protect switch on again?

Q: How to switch off laptop screen & password protect switch on again?

Is it possible to switch off a laptop screen - laptop runs Windows 7 - and prevent it being switched on again, without inputting a password?

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

I've tried the Power Options, but the display comes on again when the mouse is nudged.

I've also tried "Fn + F6" on my Acer laptop, which switches off the screen, but an accidental key press brings it to life again.

Any ingenious little prog around? None I've seen have that crucial password privacy aspect.

Preferred Solution: How to switch off laptop screen & password protect switch on again?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

When I go to options, click Norton Internet Security I get "access denied" only supervisor can change option. I've never set a password and cannot seem find any option to change it if one was selected. On the Norton Antivirus option it will open but when I select "turn auto-protect on" it will not stay that way.

I went to Symantec website, tryed to uninstall but again access denied because some monster has taken over NAV.

Any ideas??

I am trying to fix this laptop

The problem is that the screen is always very dark, even though it briefly flashes up ok for about 1 second when it is POST'ing. I thought at first that the screen was dead, so i connected it upto an external monitor which worked fine, then I started to press Fn and F11 to cycle through the available displays and noticed something strange.

With the external monitor connected the laptop screen is very dark but you can just make out a few things, press Fn and F11 and both the laptop screen and extenal monitor go blank, press Fn and F11 again and the picture appears for about 1 second on the laptop OK then goes back to being dark but just making out a few things and the external monitor is OK.

Is the laptop screen completely dead or not? If so why does it briefly display OK?

I have emailed the technical support people and all they said was
?It sounds like the timeout switch is faulty?
Any idea what a timeout switch is and can it be replaced without replacing the screen? I have replied back to them asking them similar questions but I?m think I may get another ?detailed? email like the first one.

A:Laptop screen and timeout switch

you will find that the timeout switch is the switch that turns the screen off when you shut the lid. to replace the switch, you will have to dismantle the laptop so that you can remove the damaged switch and then replace it with the new switch. can you use a soldering iron. most times they are soldered onto the M/B. if you are lucky, it won't be. good luck

Hi guys,

Are you aware of any pendrives equipped with a physical (mechanical) write-protect switch?

I used to have an old Phillips drive with that feature but it recently died. I need it as I qute often port files to other machines outside our corporate network.

I'm familiar with Kanguru thumb drives but I'm looking for expanding the choice a bit.

A:Pendrvie with physical write protect switch

That feature has not been around for a long time. The only way to do it is by setting the Security permissions for the drive, which can always be circumvented with Linux.

My screen is blank and I have been struggling to find out why. I replaced the screen and the inverter. If I shine a flashlight into the screen I can barely make out what is being displayed. If I hook up a CRT monitor the output works perfectly. Just a couple minutes ago, I was playing with the switch that disables the screen when you close the lid, but it had no effect on the LCD screen. Any thoughts or ideas?

A:ZT1130 Laptop Screen Activation Switch Failure

Sounds like the backlight is just not working. The switch would have no effect if the backlight was not working, that is what it controls. If it's working.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

a DHCP service

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

While you could use a router, or even configure the router to act as an access point, why not just buy a true access point? They start at $27: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCate...ame=Wireless-AP-Bridges-Repeaters&Order=PRICE

We have 3 16 port switches connected to our router. Everything has been in place and working well since last May.
Beginning this week, as soon as one employee arrives and turns on his pc, every pc on that switch loses internet access. Not network access - can still see other pc's - just no internet.

The pc causing the problems is the oldest on our network, but it is running Win10 like the others. When I check the stats on the router for his IP address, his has the highest transmission numbers.

We are scheduled to replace that pc within the next 2 weeks, but is there something I can/should look at doing in the mean time?

One question I need to know

If you go from DSL modem to Router then Router to switch
my question is then
If I wanted to hook another mini linksys switch into the bigger switch would you run the cat5e cable from the first switch to a reg port in the second switch or would you run it to the uplink port and then hook the 1 or 2 computers into the reg ports of the second switch.??

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3681322279B34

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pwcnt_3448p?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100!

I looked all over google and found nothing. Should I keep these settings or try and fix it?how do i fix it?

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

wired routers:
Amazon.com: TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Black): Electronics

Amazon.com: Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch: Electronics

Ophcrack found "passwords" for three accounts:

Most important, the user name shown at the log on screen is NOT one of these three.

Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor
This is a utility to reset the password of any user that has a valid local account on your Windows system.
Supports all Windows from NT3.5 to Win7, also 64 bit and also the Server versions (like 2003 and 2008)
You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.
It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a CD or USB disk to do the password reset.
Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!
There is also a registry editor and other registry utilities that works under linux/unix, and can be used for other things than password editing.

I have a D-Link DES1108 switch which is connected to a router which is connected to a cable modem.
I have 2 computers and a NAS also connected to the router.
I have 2 more computers connected to the switch.

All computers can access the inet normally.
Each of the computers on the router can see and talk to the NAS.
The computers on the switch can see the NAS but when I try to connect to it, it is asking for a password.
The computers are a mix - 1=XP, 1=Vista, 2=W7. They are all configured as workgroup, no domain.
If I move a computer from the router to the switch it will also request a password to access the NAS.

If the NAS is on the switch then all will require a password. I have no clue why it is asking for a pw, or what pw it would like.

A switch is not configurable, correct? It is just suppose to connect everything. The computers on the switch get the IP from the router as do the ones on the router.

So what am I missing????????

You have several options... Do you have another user logon on this laptop?  If yes, log on with that user, then create a new account for your wife, and copy over the data from the old user to the new account. If no other user, then either find someone with Microsoft DaRT software which includes an option to reset the password, or you will have to do a complete restore back to manufacturer's defaults.  Think you get to that by holding the <Alt> key then hit <F10> key whilst machine is booting up immediately after switch on. Hope that helps...

I have Windows XP Home as my OS

To switch account users or to log off and log on to another account on the same XP Home, I just hit the log off button and click on the other account icon

Now, for some reason, after hitting the log off or switch user icon, the XP OS goes to a blue and cream coloured panel headed:
"Log On to Windows
Windows XP Home Edition
User Name:
OK Cancel Options"

The only thing I can put this down to is the night before it started I did a Zone Alarm Spyware search and it picked up and deleted:
Trojan - Win32.1sass

I tried doing a system restore point a few days prior but it requests my XP Home "User Name" and "Password" again
Unfortunately, my user name comes up automatically, but I can't remember my "password". I punched in about 10 different passwords I suspected were correct but it rejected

How can I fix this problem up and just log off and switch users without this User name/Password screen coming up all the time?

My old laptop died recently, HDD intact running Windows 7-64 bit. With my tight budget on a new machine, I purchased a used Dell that has completely different hardware and runs Vista 32-bit.

I don't like Vista much and wanted to keep my files without having to pay for a new licence, so I put the Windows 7 HDD in the new machine - only to get a blue screen every time, and Windows repair didn't do much good.

Looking around the internet, it turned out Sysprep was my best bet to use so that Windows could reinstall drivers or something (I'm not knowledgable about this area)

The problem with using this, is that after disabling all startup programs, services, cleaning the Panther folder and running in Safe Mode, Sysprep gets a fatal error:

2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f0082] SYSPRP LaunchDll:Failure occurred while executing 'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iessetup.dll,SysPrep_Cleanup', returned error code 2
2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f0070] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:An error occurred while running registry sysprep DLLs, halting sysprep execution. dwRet = 2
2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f00a8] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup providers; hr = 0x80070002
I've followed several thread solutions and stuff but I can't seem to get past this Fatal error. I've read a lot about Rearm, but this Vista is a fully licensed OEM copy, however it has had a previous owner, so I'm not sure what they've done to it.

A:Trying to switch HDD's in Laptop

You can't normally move a HD with an OS installed from one computer to another computer and expect it to boot. This will only work if the hardware is very similar.

If the Windows 7 laptop had the OS installed when purchased it cannot be legally moved to another computer. An OEM OS lives and dies on the original computer it was installed on. Only if the OS was installed from a full retail disk could it legally be moved.

Your options are simple: continue to use Vista or purchase a legal copy of Windows 7.

Good Day
My Dell Inspiron 3521 many times does not switch on. When I press the power button the charger light blinks everytime the power button is pressed and around the center of the keyboard there is a tick noise everytime the power button is pressed but the laptop wont come on. I even tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, sometimes longer and still nothing. Even when its on and I put the laptop to sleep, it shuts down completely, and doesn't on thereafter. I can only charge my laptop while its switched on. If while charging I shut down, the laptop switches off completely and doesn't charge, the charge light doesn't remain on. There are no beep noises and the laptop does switch on at times and functions normally, but 90% of the time it doesn't switch on. Please Assist
Thank you

A:Laptop Does not Switch On

When did the issue start? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does the system overheat? Are you using the original Dell power adapter for the machine? When the adapter is connected to the system, does the led on the adapter stay stable or does it flash?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1ORB4Ya and reinstall the chipset and video drivers from the support site.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. Also, run the extended tests on the memory and HDD.
If the system is under warranty, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details.

My laptop, an Acer Aspire 1640Z, has suddenly stopped switching off. Whether I use the Alt F4 or the Turn off Computer icon on the Start, it simply stays on. I have to switch it off on the on-off button, holding it down. When it comes back on - which it does easily - it tells me it needs to review the discs, does so, and then works until I have to switch off again. I tend to run it with the mains lead in, because the battery has a poor life.
Cananyone help, please?

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone was able to help.
My laptop was working fine the other day, and after starting it up about 5 minutes later it just blacked out, no power at all.
The light on the power adapter blinks if I plug it into the laptop.
I have no idea what it might be.

It's less than a year old, Windows Vista.

Please help - my boyfriend won't leave his laptop until it is working again!!

Yesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off.

When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message - the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes - the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle - it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles..

Please HELP! Please make any advice as idiot proof as possible - I am totally clueless with techno jargon! It runs on Windows XP!

Thank you

A:Laptop won't switch on...HELP

Have you removed the offending DVD?
If not, on powerup press the dvd eject button and remove the dvd. Then try rebooting again.

A:My laptop cant switch on

Hi nurhezlin, and welcome to the forums! I understand you're having problems getting your laptop powered on. What model is it? You say that the Caps Lock LED comes on. Does it flash a number of times? If so, how many times does it flash? When you say you tried the 'step that is told on the forum', do you mean a hard reset? If not, try the following:Remove the power cord and batteryPress and hold the power button for 15 secondsPlug in the power cord (but not the battery)Press Power and see if your laptop boots

Im going to leave my computer on 24 hrs a day.Is there any thing I should know? Thank you .I think my start switch is going belly up.

A:Laptop Switch

Artereio, There should not be a problem as long as your ventilation is good. Make sure that the cpu fan is not covered with carpet dust which will imped it's heat transfer.

As long as the fans can move the air, you should not have any problem.
