Import Outlook 2002 address book to Outlook Express

Q: Import Outlook 2002 address book to Outlook Express

I have tried to import my .WAB file from Microsoft Office Outlook 2002 to Outlook Express. I used File, Import from within Outlook Express. I select the .wab file to import, and I get a message in about 1/2 a second saying it has been done but no addresses are imported.
Do you have to have both programs open? Is there another way to import addresses into OE?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've just HAD to change from Windows XP (thank you so much, Microsoft; f**k you...) to a refurbished machine running Windows 7. The old machine had Outlook Express; the new one has Outlook 2007.

I've transferred all the e-mails I need to keep (by forwarding them one by one; a pain, but it worked), but now I need to import my address book. I copied it to a memory stick as a .wab file, and it's now on my desktop. If I have the inbox displayed, and click on 'search inbox', then click in the drop-down box on 'search desktop', there the data are. Not in alphabetical order, as they were when downloaded, but there.

How do I get the info into my address book? Please help.

A:Address Book import from Outlook Express

I went from Outlook Express to Thunderbird 4 or 5 years ago.

I don't remember all the details, but I eventually got it done. Importing and exporting stuff in mail programs is generally a major pain and very cumbersome.

Here's the only link I have left. Maybe it will help.

How do I import my old Outlook express address book with groups into a new installation of Outlook Express?

I got a new computer and would like to import my address book from the old computer. I saved the old address book but when I try to import it into the new computer it loses all of the folders and groups and puts everything into the main contacts list.

Note that it is OE to OE not OE to Outlook.

If I knew where the main address book is stored I could probably just rename the old address book the same as the main book and overwrite it.

Can anybody help me?

A:How do I import my outlook express address book with groups

On your old computer open OE and click on File, Export, Address Book. Choose Text file (comma seperated values) and press Export. Enter the place you want to save the address list, for example a floppy in your floppy drive, which would be :

Press next and put a checkmark in each box and then press finsih.

It will create the floopy on your floppy. Put that floppy in the new machine, and this time after opening OE, click on File, then Import, then Other Address Book, and select text file(comma seperated values) and press import. Specify the file a:\address.csv and press next.

Put a check in each box and press finish. You should now have all your addresses imported.

I've been using Thunderbird as my default email client for a few years now,.. I'd like to use Outlook Express occasionally but I don't have my regular contacts in the OE address book. How do I import the address book from OE to Thunderbird.

A:How to import address book from Thunderbird to Outlook Express

Hi terrawarra,

I had to do this at work a while back. It's a bit of a game but check out this article.

Basically you export the Thunderbird data as a CSV file, import it to OE and map the data to the headers (ie tell OE what the entries in the address book mean).

Though I didn't need it in the end, I started by making a backup of my data first using MozBackup.

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?

A:"Outlook Express" Export/Import Address Book

Hi 2praisehim

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

I recently re-installed my entire computer, incl. MS Office 2002.
When restoring the .pst files, something went wrong. Maybe I needed to re-install more than just .pst files, maybe it screwed up because I renamed the back-up files?

Either way, the problem is that the Contact folder is not displayed in the Outlook Address Book, and I cannot manage to make it so.
I tried the following:
- Right-clicking the Contacts folder, Properties, Outlook Address Book tab. The checkbox "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" is greyed out, so I cannot check it.
- Tools, E-mail accounts, View or change existing directories or address books. Outlook Address Book - MAPI is listed (as only one). When pressing Change..., I get an error message: "This E-mail account cannot be configured. Please run Outlook and choose this profile before attempting to make changes to it." There is only one profile (I had 2 before re-installation, but no longer needed the second).
If I try to Add... an Additional Outlook Address Book, or a Personal Address Book, I get the error message "The account you have added is not fully configured. It might not work properly until re-configured correctly."

Nice, but how to re-configure it correctly??? I prefer not having to re-install the program...

I tried to Remove the listed Outlook Address Book, but then could still not Add... one (same error message), so the originally listed one re-appeared.

What can I do?

I'm trying to read the e-mails from my old Windows 98 computer on my current Windows XP computer but I haven't been able to figure out how to successfully do this. The e-mail client on the Windows 98 machine was Outlook Express 6 and the one on my current XP computer is Outlook 2002.

I followed the instructions listed on the Microsoft support site (Article ID: 270670) for backing up the data from Outlook Express which left me with a folder of .dbx files (Inbox.dbx, Drafts.dbx etc) which I then burned onto a CD and transferred over to my XP computer. My problem is that now that I've done that I'm not sure how to get Outlook 2002 to import that folder of .dbx files or recognize it. I googled it but didn't find any helpful results other than links to expensive conversion programs. So could anyone here offer any help on the matter? Thanks in advance.

A:How do I import messages from Outlook Express 6 into Outlook 2002?

Update: I realized that Outlook can't open the .dbx files and that Outlook Express has to export them to Outlook. However, when I tried this it only exported the messages in my "Sent" folder and none of the messages in any of the other folders, including Inbox.dbx which is about 500MB in size so I know the messages are in there. Any advice on what to do next?

I have over 13 years of Outlook Express folders and addresses that I desperately need to convert to Outlook 2007. I should have imported them into Outlook before I made the "Easy File Transfer" to the new Win 7 machine, but didn't know I needed to do that. Several years ago I had imported the files into Outlook, although that data did transfer it is now way out-of-date and full of duplicates.

The up-to-date data is still in my old machine and also in an external hard drive backup. I have isolated the Outlook Express personal folders into .dbx format and the addresses into .wab format.

Is there a way this can be reformatted into Outlook? Or is there some other way? I would probably also need to delete what is already in Outlook first, or I would have many more duplicates.

I welcome any suggestions.

Okay, I posted earlier about Word 2002, now I am about Outlook 2002. It's on the same machine which leads me to believe the woman on it is doing something and not telling me, or that her machine is just posessed.

When she opens her address book, which is part of an Exchange environment, she does not see the Names field first. She sees the Business number, then the Email Type, then the Company, then the Name of the person or distribution list.

I've noticed there is no way of moving these fields around. You can resize them, but the three (3) that are in front of the Name field will be reduced to nothing if I do this.

Any suggestions? I'm really about ready to uninstall/reinstall Office.

I wish to know how to sort the names which appear in the address book generated from the Contacts file of Outlook 2002. Currently (I presume by default) the names appear first name, last name and I wish to sort them last name first. [At the risk of insulting the reader's intelligence, (a) I elaborate below, and (b) I am not asking how to sort the Contacts file, which I already have sorted last name first.]

In Outlook 98 (and in Outlook 2000 - according to a friend who uses it) when one is preparing to send an e-mail, one clicks on the address book icon and a SELECT NAMES window pops up. In that window is a smaller window with a list of the names (generated from the Contacts file) in the address book that you may click on to choose them for the "To", "Cc" or "Bcc" line of the e-mail. Just above the list of names is the title "Name." It is this list of names that I wish to be able to sort. In Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000, there is a small triangle shaped button next to the "Name" title, and if you click on it you can change the sorting of the names from first name, last name (as it appears now) to last name, first name. Clicking on this button also allows you to change the order of the names from ascending to descending, and vice versa. In Outlook 2002, there is no such button in the Name title line (nor any other method of sorting I can discover). I can't believe this feature is unavailable in Outlook 2002 if only bec... Read more

I just ran into this for the first time ever.

I tried to add a new Contact name and data, as I've done for years. When I went to retrieve the name it didn't show. Just to make sure I had saved it I re-entered everything, clicked "Save and Close", with my wife watching me do it as proof that I wasn't going batty, and the name didn't show in the listing. So I did it again two more times. Didn't work. So I then entered my name with a "TEST" added to it. That didn't show up in a search of the Address book either.

Now, to get even screwier, I then entered the name in the little search window at the upper right hand corner instead of opening the Address Book, and lo and behold I find all four entries of the original name I tried to add to start with, but they don't show as entries when I open the full Address Book.

Any ideas as to what's happening? I've got a couple hundred names in my Address Book/Contact list, so I obviously know how to add them, but these aren't showing up.

Hi there,

I have this problem on one Notebook that I cannot figure out.
My user is trying to synchronise his outlook including the offline address book. When he does this working in offline mode, the synchronisation always hangs at the stage where it says: Decompressing offline address book.

The only thing this user changed before this problem was installing linked-in. But I don't really see a connection between this, and not being able to download the addressbook completely.

When I delete all .oab files and go in connect mode + synchronise then the offline address book synchronises without problems.

Any ideas?

Here is the situation XP Home on both Stepmom's hard drive was failing and I had an unused Dell sitting around. So I connected the old drive as a secondary drive on the Dell so I could transfer all her user data to the new one. Now she had never exported anything for backup purposes. I was able to restore all her emails from the .dbx files. Then loaded OE on the new system, went to import the address book, navigated to the location on the old drive, and selected her.wab file. So after I did the window popped saying import was successful but when I looked for the address book listing there is nothing there. I know I selected the right .wab because the file size was triple the amount used by the default address book. I have tried to get her on a better email program like Thunderbird but is set on using OE.

Not clear what you did...but the emails need to be imported...and the WAB needs to be imported as a separate item.
Note that you can find the location of stored emails by going to the Message store and noting the path.  This can be changed, if you like.

Well just last night someone phoned me and asked for my brothers new phone number and then realized I hadn't set up an address book in W7. Upon doing a search of the forums I don't see much positive feelings.... about new address books and email clients.

I imported my old address book from my old hdd and upon inspection it only imports the name, email address and phone number. No other information. No street address, etc.

So now looking further into this, I see it looks like a problem, I used Outlook Express for years and thought I was going to just use webmail instead. It has been nothing but a headache so far making the switch. The only part about changing to W7 that has been difficult has been the change of email systems. I have yahoo mail but I didn't do a sync before I upgraded so my contacts there are outdated.

I used to have my address book syncing with my Blackberry under Windows XP so maybe I will try that route, since my phone addresses are up-to-date. Perhaps I can get all my addresses and numbers that way.

Wish me luck!

OK it goes like this. You delete the unwanted addresses in your address book. You then save it as a new address book.

After that you import it into another account and guess what, all the "deleted" addresses are there not just from that time - but the very begining time well so it seems.

Anyone know how to delete entries correctly and save the address book properly not remembering "dead" addresses ?

Sarah, try reinstalling Outlook Express. To do that, go to Add/Remove programs and remove it, then go back and add it back in. If this does not work, you could try deleting your address book. However, first export the address names to either a "WAB" address book or a text file, then import them back after you create your new address book. In fact, I would export the entries out to both in case you have a problem. I would definitely want to have a text file copy of my address book as that would be easy to recreate in any program.

I cannot find a way of making it list Mobile Phone, even though this info is stored on it; if I click on any entry & click Properties, it correctly lists Mobile under the Summary tab, also Mobile number can be edited under Home tab.

In Outlook Express Help, search for address book mobile lists ... 0 topics found.

Any ideas? Thanks

I accidentally deleted my Outlook Express address book. Now I cannot send outgoing e-mail. The messages say that I need to re-install it, but when I try to do that using the latest update from the Microsoft website, it says that I have a newer version of Internet Explorer and will not reinstall.

Evidently Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer and cannot be installed separately.

How can I get an address book so my Outlook Express will work correctly?

I really don't think just adding an address book file will help you because if I am not mistaken, Outlook Express usally creates a new blank address book if it doesn't find one in the default directory. If you want to give it a try anyways, I have attached a blank address book to this message. Just save the attachment and change the file extension from .txt to .wab and then copy it to the directory that normally contains your Outlook Express Address Book. The path will be something similar to what I have typed below. If you can't find the path, just search for the directory called "Address Book" and dump the file into there. What is the exact error message that you are getting?

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

If it won't reinstall, I suggest you go to http://www.mozilla.com and download Thunderbird, install it and import whatever you can rescue from OE. Thunderbird is a far superior e-mail handler anyway and OE has now been superceded by Microsoft with Windows Live Mail.
