Q: Thinkpad x301 keyboard in newer models?

Hi,My wife needs a laptop for writing and she loves x301 keyboard, but it's hard to find that model anymore in Finland. Also it would be nice to have newer and better than older... So can somebody tell me, if that same keyboard that x301 has, is in some other newer model?Even if some new model has almost the same keyboard... Best regards Kristian

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have a Lenovo X301 and I love with all my heart. I've just recently upgraded my SSD and RAM. Read a lot of material about upgrading this model and found some rumors from 2009 that it should support SL9600 and SP9600 CPU's. I've consulted with Intel and they suggested I should contact Lenovo support to clarify whether there is a BIOS support for these CPU's because both SL9600 and SP9600 fit the socket (BGA956). So is there a BIOS that supports these CPU's for X301?I have read some korean forums and some people have successfully upgraded X301 to SP9600, yet it is unclear if they made any software/hardware modifications beforehand to make that possible. This is not a rational but sentimental decision, I know it is not worth the money. SU9600 is an official option, but it is such a minor upgrade I would not bother. Thank you in advance  Offtopic - after I installed Lenovo service bridge on my thinkpad, I am getting an internal server error every time I try to go to lenovo support page. Several people have reported this too, since Nov 30, 2016. Someone should look into that code

I seem to find little to nothing on the X301 and when I put in my serial number it gives me a 2777 as that closes match. Everything I find on recalibrating the battery is of no use because it isn't on the machine I have. There is no power manager that allows me to reset the battery. Is there any other way to do this?

Hi everyone! Is there any info regarding the installation of drivers required to use Bluetooth and mobile broadband module on X301 running Windows 10? Unfortunately, couldn't find any working ones. Have a L501x that has been great (except for the USB 3 issues (that I knew about before buying thanks to Internet Forums)) but now is time to look around for a replacement.
I can find websites that compare power of processors (i7-740 QM vs today's Intel processors) and I can find the speed of memory (2010 vs today) but can't find a simple metric to compare old and new.
I know there is not one simple number (today's laptop is X times better) but you would think there would be summaries instead of wading thru benchmarks?
On the other hand seem like processor changes have been striving for less power consumption rather than throughput???

A:Apples and Oranges, Older Dell Laptops compared to Newer Models...

That would be correct - there simply hasn't been a major leap in CPU horsepower, but current CPUs are more efficient and run as well or better as older ones, consuming far less power and generating far less heat than older ones did.  There really isn't a single metric that indicates overall performance - just about anything at the i5 or equivalent or faster is capable of most functions in a mainstream system.  Avoid the very low power CPUs (Celeron/sub-i3s) and watch the video requirements and you can't go far wrong with any mainstream CPU.
Now that AMD is fielding more efficient CPUs that run as well or better than Intel's out of the gate (and which will find their way into mobile systems soon), Intel will be forced to follow suit just as it was the last time AMD caught up/surpassed Intel -- so the situation may soon change (again).

Given that the Boxing Day Sale will end in a few days, is it worth to forget about it and wait for 2019 models? I like the X1E 4K model but I don't like the fan noise and the fingerprint maget keyboard area. Having extra battery life is a welcome. How likely will these be fixed in 2019 models? If there will be a silver version, I will go for it as it is not fingerprint magnet.

A:Is it worth to forget about the Boxing Day Sale and wait for 2019 Thinkpad models?

First, I HAVE NO INSIDE INFORMATION.  I have seen less this year in the way of rumors and leaks than any year I can remember.  Last year, there were leaks on upcoming models from all the computer makers.  Most people assume 2019 versions of some models will be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show, starting in 10 days, but what models and what will change is not really known.  Mode being announced does not mean they are available for sale on announcement. day.  Only you can decide if you need to get something now, or whether waiting is best for you.  The X1E was new  later in 2018.  There may or may not be one announced at the show.  The 2nd generation often fixes complaints that are wide-spread, but nobody can say if it will change the issues that are important to you.

Hi, I recently grabed a X301 which was working fine. However, I learned that the SSD (a 1.8" 128GB from Samsung) was not supporting the TRIM : I first tried to update the SSD firmware with a version that supports the TRIM, by using the Samsung tool for that (that is Maindiag.exe, from a bootable USB drive with FreeDos), but without success. Then I decided to erase completely the SSD, still with Maindiag.exe, in order to restart with a fresh SSD that I could partition to 100GB, leaving 28GB for the overprovisioning (which is apparently a good thing to do if no TRIM can be used). The erase with Maindiag apparently went OK, although it was surprinsingly fast (2 seconds to erase 128GB...?). But then things have gone ugly... - When I power on the X301, the LEDs are blinking and the CD drive is operating during a few seconds, as usual- Nothing more happens during about 10 minutes (!), and the screen remains blank- After 10mn some text if briefly displayed (2 seconds before it goes). I could take a photo and I can read :"tpm tpm0: A TPM error (28) occurred continue selftest""tpm tpm0: TPM self test failed"http://prntscr.com/mb9iro During all this sequence there's no opportunity at all to enter the BIOS... The usual startup screen with "To interrupt [the normal sequence ? don't remember exactly] press the ThinkVantage blue button" never shows up. After that it depends on the presence of a bootable USB drive :- without any bootable USB drive, I end up wit... I have an X301 2777CTR, purchased from the Lenovo Outlet. The computer was spec'ed as having no internal optical drive, and I assumed the cover over the bay where the optical drive or a second battery would go was just that--a cover with no other function except to keep dust out. Also, when I charged the battery, Power Manager reported only one battery present and charging. I ordered a second battery for the empty bay. When the battery arrived and I went to install it, surprise! A second battery was already there. Now, knowing that there really are two batteries in the computer, Power Manager shows "Battery 2:  there is an error."  I can't find any reference for this error message on these forums or in the Lenovo troubleshooting files. How do I get Power Manager to recognize the second battery and report its charge and health state?

A:X301 "Battery 2: there is an error"

It looks as though I have solved my own problem. I set Power Manager to do a battery reset of Battery 1. When it was done (draining and then recharging to 100%), Power Manager showed Battery 2 partially discharged, but in good condition. I am now running a reset on Battery 2. Assuming that results in the remaining battery being calibrated to the computer, I should be in good shape. Thanks for all those that read the message, in any event.

HelloAccording to the datasheet for ThinkPad X301 this model ships with an integrated camera. My X301 is "Type 4056-CTO S/NL3-ABD9D 09/03 ID:4057W9R" and I do not see any physical camera lens anywhere, not even close to the light (activates with Fn+PgUp) in the upper right corner of the screen. My T430s has a lens at this position and in the BIOS there is an option to enable/disable a camera. Please tell me whether some production batches of the X301 ship without camera. And if they all do should I expect an option to turn it on/off in the BIOS? I do not see anything in the BIOS that indicates the existence of a camera.Thank you

Hi there, I switched to an Intel X18-M SSD on my X301 some time ago. I noticed that the new BIOS was released with Secure Erase functionality some time ago. As I was going to rebuild my laptop today, I thought I would give it a go. Turns out that this was a mistake. The utility failed on the Intel SSD necessitating a reboot after running for six hours. After the reboot, it turns out that the utility has set a hard drive password on the disk (there was not one before). As I have no way to know what password it has set, I am effectively locked out of my drive and it's a brick to all intents and purposes.Does anyone (Lenovo in particular) know what password is set during the running of the Secure Erase functionality of the latest BIOS? My only alternative is to find out if there is a default master password from Intel. Since in principle, this should be blank, I believe that I am scuppered unless someone in Lenovo can tell me what password they set using the utility. Thanks in advance.

Just given an old X301 (surprisingly, first time dealing with this model), and was told by the giver that they thought the mobo was bad due to overheating, and the kb and screen didn't work. Well, not sure how tech-savvy they were, so took that with a grain of salt. Turns out it does post, but the LCD lamp (not sure if LED or CCFL) won't light despite graphics being shown on screen (visible at extreme angles). Like they had said, keypresses aren't recognized. Now, these two issues unto themselves need not confirm a bad mobo. Still, considering a usb kb and external monitor work, is it more likely to be the components or mobo?Just wanted some input before sourcing parts or even popping it open (here's hoping for loose ribbon cables!). **bleep** solid feeling machine though. Would be nice to get this in order even without an upgradable CPU option. Type: 2774-W8Q

Hello, so I've just got 3rd party main and ultrabay batteries. The main one seems to work fine. The ultrabay battery was not detected at first, but after main battery got charges to 100%, the ultrabay one got detected as well. And just as it charged to 100% (after the 2nd battery detection the lenovo power manager displayed charging from 60% or so), lenovo power manager suddenly started displaying "60%, not charging". I check the details and it shows my ultrabay battery has 0% charge even though couple of seconds ago it was charged fully. Restart did not help and with AC unplugged, my laptop starts using the main battery, probably because it thinks ultrabay one is empty. Any ideas on how to fix this? :/

I went out and bought a 128gb 1.8" SSD for the purpose of upgrading my x301 to Win 7. I really wanted to preserve my old XP environment on the stock 64gb.

I did a fresh Win 7 Ultimate install, initially I installed the 64bit version but found my VPN software would not support it so then I wiped and installed 32 bit. I did leave the 100mb partition that the 64bit version created.

Installed Win 7 32bit, installed the lenovo software update program and let it put all of the software on the laptop. Did the win 7 update thing (this all took the better part of a day).

I wresteled the TPM chip and now have it owned by win 7. Had to do the "hit esc" till the red win7 loader, power off, enter bios, clear keys method, but it worked. Now Win 7 says it ownes the tpm.

Trying to turn on Bitlocker doing the "key test" results in the screen on every reboot saying that something has changed. I then turned on bitlocker, let it encrypt drive without doing the test and it completed sucessfully but every reboot asks for the recovery key.

I've tried just about every "fix" I can find for this, including, changing bios boot order to only include hdd, suspending/resuming BL and a host of other things as well, bios updated. Nothing seems to work. I'd really like to use bit locker but not if it is not going to work right.

I did come across a post that involved some policy editing then turning of/on again and have not yet tried that.

A:Lenovo X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time..

I believe I found the problem enabling bitlocker on my x301. I tried just about every possible thing I could find on the internet and was unable to get it enabled. Every time on the next boot I would get the message (pre windows), from the bios that the environment had been changed and bitlocker would fail to encrypt the drive. If I encrypted the drive without the bitlocker test it would encrypt but every boot would make me enter the recovery key in order to boot.

Last night I found a post that indicated that bitlocker would make a 300 meg partition (100 for itself, 200 for oem utilities). That got me thinking. Today I decided to shrink my system partition and leave some unpartitioned space on the drive in case it was trying to make this partition. That's when things changed. Suddenly bitlocker started working properly. I still only see the 100 meg windows partition, but maybe there is another hidden partition that it was unable to create because I had given all the space to my system drive. I left 500 megs unpartitioned, enabled bitlocker and it's working fine. For me, problem solved.

Hope this helps someone. One nice thing about Win7 is that it allows you to shrink/expand volumns right from disk management so no playing around with PE boot disks.

I unistalled the mouse and keyboard many times... with no luck... my next thought was the com port so I uninstalled that.... nope still no keyboard.. even the few keys from the laptop that did work before do not..nor the laptops own mouse. So I hope I said it all... except because this is borrowed I don't have the discs.... so what else? Joel

I bought my P50 in March of 2016. I've been very happy with my purchase overall, the only disappointment has been the low key-rollover property of the built-in keyboard. I am a programmer/game developer, and it is important for me to have a keyboard that supports multiple simultaneous keystrokes. After taking ownership, I found that the keyboard drops strokes with as few as 2 keys already held down, which makes it pretty useless for gaming.  I work around this by plugging in a USB keyboard when I need to test my game projects. At the time I purchased, there was only one option for the keyboard. Today, I was browsing the Lenovo online store, and noticed that there's now an option for a backlit keyboard in addition to the standard non-backlit keyboard.  Under "Help Me Decide" it says: Lenovo has refreshed the keyset on all ThinkPad laptops, outfitting them with the ThinkPad Precision Keyboard. This new keyset allows a more comfortable, fluid and accurate typing experience with it's slate of individually rounded, spacious, and low-set keys. The ThinkPad Precision Keyboard simultaneously delivers a modern look and feel to your ThinkPad.*Select models are available with a backlit keyset as standard, or as an optional upgrade.*Most 15.6" models come standard with full keyboard including dedicated number pad. I am wondering if this refreshed keyboard means a  higher rollover. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad
Model : E431 (Edge Series) Number: 62774UQ
(3rd Gen Ci5/ 4GB/ 500GB 7200rpm HDD/ Windows 10)

I purchase this in 2013. It has been used moderately over the first 2/ 2 1/2 years
The laptop was idle for the past 6 months.
After I recharged the laptop, I noticed that some keys began to malfunction. So I installed Windows 10 (Windows 7 previously). However the problem persisted.
The shift key seems to be pressed as per its own wish and the sticky keys notifications comes up on its own. The Enter key sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes on its own. The backspace key also does not function sometimes.
I then opened up the laptop and removed the keyboard from the laptop and then replugged it back in hoping it would make a difference, but it didn't.
The touchpad also become unresponsive sometimes and I have to press the Windows key twice to make it work again.
What could be the source of the problem? Is it the keyboard or is it the motherboard to blame? Kindly provide a solution.

my laptop keyboard is not working right. first the specs. ibm thinkpad T42, machine type 2378, model R4U, OS xp-pro coa sp2, 512mb ram. my cpu usage jumps up and down between 40 to 100% when running my spy sweeper, fire fox isp and a voice chat program. when i am not running any programs except whats need for the laptop to work the cpu usage is 3 to 10%. and i have available ram. OK now with the problem. when i try to type on the keyboard the letters or numbers don't show up. but if i hold the keys down it will show up there is a delay of about 2 seconds. if i just push down the keys at normal speed it wont show up. it will only show up if i hold it down for about 2 seconds. i thought the keyboard was bad so i bought a new one from the factory. i installed it but it is still doing the same thing. just to let you know every thing else about the computer works great and and all my programs do not have any lag. its only the problem with keyboard delay. i will just add this i have cleaned up the computer, defragged, ran spy ware and anti virus and it has been working fine for years without any problems.

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12 model. It is using Windows 10. What is the driver/software I should check to make sure I'm running the latest version for the equivalent of what used to be called "Transitions"?  Basically something that recognizes various keyboard configurations such as tablet mode, tent mode, etc. and appropriately disables or re-enables the keyboard? Two things happened last night as I was playing a game in tent mode:- firstly I could not get the screen to rotate 180 degrees when I switched from tablet mode to normal laptop mode by rotating the keyboard and flipping to normal orientation.  So everything was displayed upside-down.- the keyboard was unresponsive, but I could use the touch screen fine and use the Windows button under the screen to get to the Start menu.   So basically somehow something stopped responsing that should have told the system that I flipped the laptop from tent mode to normal mode and also rotated the keyboard forward.

Hi community, please your support Today I start my laptop and a BIOS message appears warning to update the date and time, I accessed to the setup and the date and time was changed to 01/01/2001 and time 00:00:00, I updated to today July 21t, 2018 8:12pm. I saved the configuration and boot continues.  Apparently the problem was solved and Windows 10 started. Now I have the following problem: It is not possible to use the keyboard in a regular basis, 2 letters by second, I have to wait 2 seconds to enter a letter, if I enter the letters a litle faster some of them are missed and the words and phrases are incomplete. Please need your feedback, I can not use the keyboard as I used to, as a reference, to write this message took me almost 30min,very frustrating Many thanks in advance for your comments and solution proposals Jose CollantesMexico

Ever since I had to format and reinstall WinXP my laptop, it has developed several annoying issues. First that developed was the built in touchpad and trackpoint stopped working intermittantly. Even with updating the driver, they seldom work. I found that opening the properties page in device manager makes it work for about 10 seconds, then it cuts out. Even then, it only allows the touchpad to function for the time, leaving the trackpoint useless. That doesn't matter to me, since I can use the USB mouse when I'm in the house. It just would be nice to rely on the touchpad when I need it!

Then a couple months later, the keyboard cuts out. Not completely, mind you... It works during POST, it works when it asks you to choose OS (I dual booted for 2k and XP), and most of the time it works for me to input my password into the user select screen of WinXP. The cutting out of the KB is completely random, though I've noticed that it's more frequent to cut out when loading IE or Firefox too soon after booting up, though it is not limited to the loading of those programs. Some times, it will get past POST and OS selection, but not work to enter the password.

The IBM troubleshooting page has been useless. All they want to say is that the KB is shot, but that's only because the only options is "The keyboard does not work at all!", which is not the case. I am typing this on the laptop in question as we speak, so obviously it works.

My only thought is t... Read more

A:IBM Thinkpad R40 keyboard/mouse issues

I figured nobody would have any input on this one... it doesn't make much sense to me either...

If I could, I'd just buy a USB KB, but alas I can't afford a USB hub + KB (only have 1 USB port)

*sighs*

I really hate the ISO keyboard. They managed to take the existing keyboard design, which is already sub-optimal, based on 1800 typewriters, and managed to make it worse! With an ISO keyboard your pinkies have to travel twice as far from home row just to hit two of the most used keys, shift and return:At least some companies recognize this problem and have been giving the option to buy laptops with ANSI US keyboards, all over the world. Sadly, I couldn't find a single EU Lenovo online shop that carried this keyboard option, and the US shop will not sell internationally. I would love to buy a P40 Yoga, but the ISO keyboard is a deal breaker, because I spend most of my computer time typing. Do you have any advice?
