I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.

Hello, the computer I am concerned with is running Windows 7 with IE8, Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I am currently in Safe Mode with Networking without issue.

The owner of the computer says that something happened earlier today while he was online that sounds like some false antivirus popup, but he's unsure. Here are the symptoms in normal mode. Every application, from moving through them to opening and closing them, runs exceptionally slow - one to three minutes to open, at least a minute to open internet pages. I noticed that, when in IE, as the pages are loading the IE page disappears and reappears. I am not very familiar with Windows 7 so I don't know if it is related. The computer seems to be getting slower as the day goes on. CPU usage is very high.

So far, I have disabled many startup items that were unnecessary. I ran CCleaner and cleaned up. MBAM was run in both normal and safe mode, full scans, and found nothing. This is also posted in Viruses and Malware, but I'm unsure where it should live.

If you can help, thanks!! I have to work on the Win7 computer from LogMeIn, and may have to get around in safe mode there.

I am currently running Safe Mode with Networking and things seem stable.

I ran Anti-malware (nothing found), VIPRErescuescanner (nothing), fakereanfix (didn't help), ComboFix (probably made things worse).

I have a HP Pavilion A6352c desktop pc. I have recently installed a clean copy on win 7. I have listed the issue I am having below. I hope you can assist me in getting this system to a stable state.

1. System locks up running in Normal Mode - I will take about 3 minutes before the entire system locks up, I have to do a hard shutdown when this happens. I can start the system in Normal mode, but only if I use the diagnostic startup option in MSConfig. I can enable some services, but I am in the process of trying to figure out which one is making it lockup.

2. The system will run fine under safe mode with networking and such. I have the normal startup option in msconfig enabled in safe mode and no issue except it's in Safe Mode!

I have attached the requested documents/files in the attached zip file. I was unable to get the Perfmon report.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks in advance

A:Systems runs in safe mode - Normal mode locks up

The dumps are all over the map, but they all are having issues in amdk8.sys (the OS's CPU driver). What's really interesting is one of these dumps looks almost exactly the same as the issue that is documented in KB 975530, but that's for Intel CPUs running hyper-v. However, you *are* running into a watchdog timeout on the CPU (it's causing other drivers to crash and confuse analyze, but it's not that code's fault that the CPU stopped processing it's requests). This means you might have a bum core on that CPU when entering/exiting C-states. Try running this:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066

Reboot, and see if it still causes problems in regular boot mode. Either way, you probably need to have that CPU looked at as a potential bad part.

Hi, I'm having some problems fixing my bleeping computer (Windows 10 desktop computer, to be specific) and could use some assistance.

On Friday 15 December 2017, my computer ran fine when I woke up and used it for a few minutes in the morning. Before that date, I had very few problems with my computer running; the biggest issue was some freezing occurring while playing games demanding on processing power such as Civilization 5. However, I don't believe that is related to my current issue, as I last played it on Sunday 26 November 2017, and I had no issues with it on that day.

When I returned home later that day (15 December), I found my computer stuck on a blue screen. I'm not sure quite what happened, as my computer was not used during the day at all. I restarted several times, but I was not able to even make it to the user login screen before getting a blue screen. I've received error code 0xc0000142 for every blue screen.

Startup repair did nothing to resolve the situation. I am still able to run my computer in safe mode with networking and that's how I'm writing this post. For the past two weeks, I've been using safe mode to use my computer. I've looked online for solutions, but haven't gotten much. I've had some problems in safe mode with random freezes, but at least the computer runs most of the time, although with limited functionality.

My research led me to trying Windows + R and opening msconfig.exe and disabling all services that were not... Read more

A:BSOD - Computer runs in safe mode, not regular mode

If you work OK in Safe Mode - but not in normal mode, it's most likely a software problem.
Hardware problems are possible, but nowhere near as likely as a software problem.

First thing I'd suggest is trying a clean boot.  It's similar to Safe Mode - but works in normal mode by disabling stuff.
It's also similar to disabling the services - but you'll disable more when doing a clean boot.
If a clean boot fixes the problem - then the problem was caused by one (or more) of the things you disabled for the clean boot.
Then it's just a matter of re-enabling things one at a time until you find the problem.

Backup your stuff now.  There's no telling exactly what the problem is - so a backup is the best way to be prepared in case the system dies on you suddenly.

If this doesn't work, then post back and we'll ask for some reports to try and figure out what's going on.
Good luck!

Contacted my VPN provider regarding this, they questioned where that IP address was coming from because it was not theirs. you are my last hope! I do not know what I am supposed to do anymore, I spent the last 8hours looking on the net what I could do. I am a computer noob and have little experience with computers at all.

Here's my problem. My laptop doesn't start anymore. The first thing I noticed on my boot screen were four parallel vertical lines of dots, then four parallel lines of vertical dashes then dots again and so on. This is in the background from the time when I start my samsung R70, even on the boot screen, as well as on the windows vista loading screen (these little boxes floating from right to left...). These really weird dots are however NOT present in the DOs menu and neither is it after you pressed F8 to boot in safe mode. They are also NOT present in safe mode that means they disappear after the boot screen and are not evident on the black background of the safe mode desktop.
However at the time when the windows vista sign is supposed to flash up and you'd be prompted to enter your password (this is when I start it normally), nothing happens and a greyish-white screen comes up, after which the system just restarts and the whole process happens again (including the dots mentioned earlier). I can run the laptop in safe mode, in fact I am running it in safe mode with network drivers right now to type this, but I cannot, under any circumstances, run it in normal mode. When I start it in safe mode I get the following notice:

(Yes, I am running a German OS, so I a... Read more

Please guys, help me!

I am a year 12 boarding student and I desperately need my laptop to get my work done!

Do you guys reckon that installing a completely new windows vista will solve the problem?

- I do not have the original vista CD with me since I am German and on an exchange to Australia. My dad has the CD and he's about 22.000km away right now.

Hi -

The BSOD bugcheck (STOP error) = 0x50 = invalid memory referenced

As you said - no service packs installed, which is probably one of the problems here. You need to see if you can re-install Windows and then see if it is stable or not.

I do recommend another re-install of Vista using the manufacturer's (OEM) recovery DVD. This must be the first item on the "to do" list. Contact your father or the system manufacturer and obtain the Vista recovery DVDs. Do you have a recovery partition? Many do. Usually, the key to invoke the recovery partition if F10 - during boot-up.

Two other options until your Vista DVDs arrive from your father -
1. Download and burn Server 2008 - it has the same build as Vista, with a few features that have been disabled. It is a trial offer that can be renewed up to 240 days - http:/... Read more

Hello, I'm hoping someone would be able to help me resolve this so that I can avoid having to reinstall Windows. Here's the situation: my laptop suddenly cannot boot up anymore; it usually hangs when the "Please wait..." dialog shows up with the text "Windows is starting up...", but sometimes it goes as far as the login prompt, then hangs after I enter my credentials and press Enter. When it hangs I cannot even move my mouse cursor. I can only think of two things I did out of the ordinary that created this mess:
I installed the driver for the Turtle Beach AudioAdvantage Micro USB stick audio card before my PC started hanging. However, after I installed the driver I was forced to reboot, and my computer rebooted just fine.
I closed my laptop's lid to put it in sleep mode while MyDefrag (formerly JkDefrag) was running. I have done this in the past without any issues, but this time when I exited sleep mode my computer was hanging, so I forced a reboot. This trouble started after I rebooted.

I am able to boot up in Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking, which leads me to think that maybe some network related drivers got corrupted. Some more info on my setup:
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 installed (v5.1.2600)
I have Avira AntiVir and Comodo Firewall installed

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

I have tried to run IE7 in normal mode and I always get a "The address is not valid" window. I have a good internet connection and Firefox works flawlessly. I do not have connection problems. If I ran IE7 in Safe Mode with Networking, I can bring up webpages with no problems. I thought that upgrading to IE8 would cure the problem but I am still getting the exact same problem. I have tried checking many things and have tried many suggestions that I have found through web searches but nothing works. Please help!

Hi ,

I'm using windows7 32-bit operating system. I have internet explorer 8( it never worked since installation, always shows "No network connection") and Google chrome installed in my computer. I had been using Google chrome which crashed yesterday. I re-installed Chrome and now it says there is no internet connection. In short, I cannot use internet in my computer. Any other browser installed comes up showing the same "No Network connectivity" thing. And then I started the computer in "safe mode with networking" and I could use see that both Google chrome and Internet explorer are working. But they do not work in normal mode. I really don't know what to do to solve this problem. And internet is working as I'm using internet in my mobile using WIFI from the same internet connection.

Thanks you,

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

A:Internet works in safe mode w/ networking but not normal mode

In Network and Sharing Center, there is a wizard to troubleshoot connection problems. If that doesn't work, you could "set up a new connection".

As always, I recommend running a full scan with your installed antivirus suite. Then run a second or third on-demand scanner like Malwarebyes, Hitman Pro, Windows Offline Defender, etc just in case your installed suite missed something.

If this problem just began with a couple of days ago you could try using a restore point to return your computer to a date/time prior to the problem starting.

System Restore

You could also try doing a clean startup (AKA clean boot) to troubleshoot apps and services that may be causing the issue.

I am working on a computer now that is failing to get online in normal mode. It can get online in safe mode.

I have run and updated adware, ran hijack this, ran Spybot SD, and ran Stinger. Mutliple times for all and now everything checks out like it should. I also deleted several folders that were spy/ad ware. Everything is functioning as it should.

I have also run the msconfig in normal mode to eliminate unnecessary startup items in normal mode and between the normal and safe mode w/ networking, all the processes match up. I have gotten it down to 17 processes in normal mode. Was originally at 75+. Both are now the same in safe mode w/ networking as well as normal mode, 16 running processes.

I have run ipconfig and pulled a valid network address. I have also done a /release and /renew, gotten the same IP, and cannot get online in normal mode.

TCP/IP settings in IE is correct. I have also gone under the Advanced section of IE tools and restored default. No go. I have also deleted the 1394 connection, restarted and it was auto-added to the computer and is functioning properly. Same for the network adapter.

Can anyone give me some ideas on what else I could check to try and get online? I have also downloaded and installed Firefox with no positive results.

Everything within the Device Manager is functioning properly. The system is XP Home SP1. I am thinking about upgrading to SP2, but really dont want to do that as I doubt it will help.

Also, I have run the WinSock XP fix... Read more

Hi,

Thanks in advance.

A:Net is working with safe mode with networking but not in normal mode..why?

Hi, it could be that something is stopping or preventing your internet connection. You see when your pc boots in normal mode it loads everything and I mean everything. Whereas in safemode + networking it only loads the process and services needed to work or use the machine.

The first thing I would like you to do is go to device manager, hold windows key and press R
then type devmgmt.msc now a window will be displayed and click continue, then expand network adapters, write down what you have installed in your machine and try downloading the latest version.

The other thing you can do is go to msconfig, by holding the windows key located in between ctrl and alt, and press r on the keyboard. Then type msconfig, then go to startup and uncheck everything, click apply and restart. Now if you Internet works it means that there is something loading which is not good or is causing a conflict.

We also want to cancel out Malware so make sure your pc had anantivirus and antispyware and you scan your pc full. Also go to microsoft update and make sure you have the latest updates.

Thanks

Try booting into Safe Mode with Command.

When it opens type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

This will appear under Programs, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

When the elevated command prompt opens type in, or copy and paste sfc /scannow, then press Enter.

Once the scan has finished a log will have bee created.  To access this log open the elevated command prompt the same way you did previously, the copy and paste  findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.

A new icon will appear on the desktop titled sfcdetails, click on this to open it, copy and paste this in your next post.

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

A:xp only runs in safe mode

My suggestion would be to back up the data and clean install the OS. This is the easyest way out.

Or you can go the longer way, by tshooting each issue one by one by:

1) Use msconfig utility to diagnostic issue
2) Uninstalling/reinstall any of the programs/device drivers that are not working properly hoping that once you get them working you wont have any issue.

But here is what you can try to do if you decide to go the hard way:

Go to start run , type msconfig <enter>
choose "selective startup", uncheck all the check boxes below , apply , reboot and see if you can get to normal mode.

If not, then you will have to boot back to safe mode, disable 3rd parties services, and then reboot, test again.

If still fail, you can go to device manager and disable devices hoping that you can boot back to windows.

Anyway lets hope for the best, so go ahead and use msconfig, then post replay, with the details of what happen when you boot to regular mode. Also check event viewer for errors.

Just installed XP Pro onto a lap top I've inherited, and I can't get the damn thing to run full XP.

Safe mode will start up ok, and I can do the usual stuff in there, but I wanna use the regular mode!

When I try to boot normally, I either get the blue screen of death flash up, but not long enough to read any of it, or it all freezezs up with a black screen,

Any thoughts out there??

my daughter got to my computer and i think she deleted something. i have windows xp and can run it only in safe mode but i dont know what to do to fix it. it says something about a driver missing but im not sure to what. someone please help me

A:my xp runs in safe mode only

without knowing the exact error message its difficult to help. However, in safemode, trying doing a system restore to a previously saved restore point just prior to the problem.

If that does not work, please give the exact error message you are getting when booting to normal mode.

I run on XP, and can only run in safe mode, or safe mode with networking. I restored my computer to the last known good config, but can't go any earlier because I deleted all but the most recent. In the last couple of days I've added norton av an anti keylogger, and zone alarm firewall.
Before I started having issues I put on a fan. After installation I couldn't get windows to load. I've since disconnected the fan (though I can't see that being an issue), and uninstalled zone alarm, and the anti keylogger. I still can't get it loaded other than in safe mode. What do you guys think.
Thanks
Paul
