Sata drive not showing on My Computer screen

Q: Sata drive not showing on My Computer screen

Hi guys
My laptop is not displaying my Sara drive in the my computer screen. I have had this issue before with an IDE drive, a strange issue where my external drive only appears in the list when I unplug it and then when I plug it in, it disappears.

With this drive, I get the message the device can perform faster in a USB 2 port (something my prehistoric laptop doesn't have,) then I get the message that the device is ready to use.

If I go into device manager it does appear as a USB Mass Storage Device and I've tried updating driver, rollback, uninstall and everything else I can think which all seem to work ok until I go into my computer and it isn't there.

Any ideas? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Does anyone know how to get a 2.5" SATA External Case to show up(plugged in by usb (2.0))? Ive spent over 2 days trying to figure it out, please let me know if you know how to fix this...... below is the list of my problem & the things ive tried so far

Heres a little back ground:
I used to have a Sony Vaio computer with a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 Hard Drive. One day the screen just went black on start up and it says "Error loading operating system" & since then ive tried
1) reinstalling Windows XP on the computer.....didn't work

2) recognizing the drive through ms dos.....didn't work

3) Opening the old computer & taking the Travelstar 5K100 hard drive & inserting it in a 2.5" Sata External Case and plugging the usb on to my current computer, it seemed like there was hope as the red light was solid red & when I felt the box, the hard drive seemed to be spinning and working shape, but still.....didn't work

4) I've went the "most popular solution" selected computer, right clicked Manage scrolled down to the left panel & clicked Disk Management, my hard drive is nowhere to be found, only my current drives in the computer so.....didn't work

4.5) I went to Device Manager right clicked all of the usb ports to make sure to turn off the power so that it would save enery or something like that, then restart...... still.....didn't work

5) I tried to find it in bios but I didn't seem to find... Read more

I have an older asrock dual sata board, bought a hard 250gb barracuda drive, installed it. It shows up in the bios as working, shows up on post as enabled, but does not show up in windows 7. I read around and also tried to assign a drive number to it, but it does not show up there either.

I have tried running it in IDE mode and still get nothing. but I tested the drive in an xp system and it works fine. On one restart after installing the drive it said it needed ULi SATA/RAID Controller (M1689/M1695) driver. I got them, but they wouldn't install, but then I ran them in vista mode, however they didn't fix the issue. Anyone have anything else I can try?

Just built a new PC with an ASUS X99 Deluxe Mother board. I have installed a new SSD drive and two SATA drives from my old computer, along with one new SATA 2G HD. I plan to migrate data from the old drives to the new one. All the drives show up in the BIOS but when I boot to the OS the new drive and one of the old ones does not show up in Windows. I have installed all the ASUS drivers in windows, and I am now wondering if the OEM version of Windows 8.1 that I purchased has a limitation of how may drives it will support. Can someone please clarify?

Bought a LG Blu-ray internal sata rewriter. Installed it and windows 7 found it first time. So far so good.
Put windows into sleep mode and when I woke it up the sata drive was missing.
The drive was not only missing, but the tray failed to manually open and the activity light did not illuminate.
Drive totally dead. Check all power and sata cables all ok.
Done a full reboot and drive came back ok

This only happens when the machine is put into sleep mode. Sata drivers all up to date and all cables 100%.
Turn the machine fully off or restart and everything works ok each time. Use sleep mode and it fails when you bring the m/c to life.

Has anyone had a similar problem and how can it be put right? I use ( well I did ) the sleep mode quite a lot and this has become a bit of a pain.

A:new sata hard drive showing as scsi in win 7 help

With some hard disk controllers it is normal for it to show up as a SCSI disk - particularly if the disk controller is running in AHCI mode, which is preferrable since it allows features such as NCQ. One thing you may want to check is: locate the drive itself under "Disk Drives" in device manager and go into the properties. Select the "Policies" tab and view what is set. For better performance you will want it set to "Better Performance" with both of the boxes checked. Though if you lose power you may run into minor file corruption issues - I personally have not had issues with this. If you disable those check-boxes performance can decrease significantly.

Hi guys,
I'm hoping you can help
On Friday I purchased an Intel NUC DN2820FYKH. Installed the correct RAM and HDD and installed windows 8.1 through USB. The system installed the OS and booted normally. However, when I shutdown the mini-pc and later turned it back on, it would not recognise the SATA drive.
I assumed something must have gone wrong so I removed it, formatted it in another machine and repeated the process. Eventually I re-installed windows 8. To check, I shut down the computer immediately, and the same problem occurred.
The initial startup screen (showing F2 for setup) hangs when the drive is plugged in but the bios still shows nothing, I tried mounting the drive in an external caddy and connecting it by USB and the computer was able to see it again.
On Friday I updated to the latest BIOS (fy0039). I rolled the BIOS back to (fy0015) and tried every update since then without luck.
I don't think its a hardware fault as a format fixed it until I booted into windows. Before I booted into windows I was having a bit of trouble finding the right installer and the drive was showing up fine. It seems that it's only once I've booted into windows that the drive vanishes on shutdown.

I am using a trial copy of 8.1 Enterprise from MS website.
Please note I have also posted this question on the Intel forums (https://communities.intel.com/message/254820#254820) but in the past have had quicker and more relevant help from this forum.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Is BIOS set to legacy or UEFI and are you formatting as MBR or GPT? Is strange it won't appear in BIOS though, could be a hardware problem.

I have 2 IDE HDs installed and added SATA drive lately. SATA runs in IDE mode in CMOS. Problem is, even though SATA drive is recognized by BIOS, Disk Manager, Norton Ghost & System Works, it doesn't show in My Computer, causing problems with saving and opening files. Tried a couple of tricks (changing the drive letter, disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, reformatting etc. ) nothing seems to work. I use this SATA drive for storage and for now I have to drag the files down there manually.
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I have nVidia GeForce graphics card onboard.
Has anyone encountered this kind of a problem ?
Thanks Carl

From your sig, you have an nforce mb. That is normal. After you install the nforce drivers, it shows as a removable drive. It is because the board supports hot swapping the drives.

Dell Dimension 8400 (about 3-4 years old). Stock SATA 160gb hard drive crashed (got the blue screen, all the codes, etc.) Took it to a computer place, they also said the HD crashed. I have bought a replacement 250gb SATA HD - attached the two inputs to the back (one thin and ling, one thin and short) and all I get on boot up is a couple of chirps and the screen says "Drive 1 (and 2 and 3) Not Found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" and repeats for drives two and three. The drive is warm, it's being accessed (it's humming), but I've also tried a third 160gb drive, same thing. I even replaced the original drive back in and the same thing - not even the blue screen and error codes any more.

Went to F2 set up, set to auto detect, all (SATA) drives sets to 'on.'

I'm computer literate, but not a techy or anything.

Totally lost now. Please help.

I managed to get hold of part 01HY319 for my trusty T460 and all works fine. It looks like this and converts from an NVME M.2 drive (M-key) to SATA Express connection on the motherboard.  SATA Express is only x2 PCI lines (rather than the 4 you get with "full" NVME support) so I was interested in performance. Performance before with a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD SATA drive was like this  Performance afterwards with the 01HY319 part and a 1TB Samsung 960 Evo NVME drive was like this  Hope this helps anyone considering the upgrade.

Hello to the fighters of the good fight ,

I have recently managed a fresh install of xp on a single 80gb sata drive and all was weel for a while however 2 days in and my machine had a hang which resulted in a necessary power off . On reboot i couldnt get onto the xp os, and tried safe mode where it was hanging on mup.sys and would not go any further. So i tried booting from xp cd and used fixboot which worked and booted me into windows. However during tha time there was another hang inside windows which needed another reboot and this time every time i booted up i was getting the blue screen of death giving nme the ntfs.sys error

this time every time i tried to use xp to boot and recover i could not get into it as it would kick up the blue screen after asking if i wanted to repair existing or install xp.

I have managed and install xp on a small ide drive and am currently trying to slave the sata drive so i can get the contents from it. However every time i connect the sata drive with the ide drive set to master and making sure i boot from that xp install i get the blue screen error again.

Also if i connect the drive once booted up inside windows it reboots

Is this a terminal HD error or simply a recoverable windows error ?

I had the same problem, I do not know what caused it or why it happened, and it took me almost 5 days to finally get it working again.

Although probably not the easiest way to fix my computer, or the simplest, what I did was

1. Downloaded Knoppix (a Live CD version of Linux) from www.knoppix.de
2. Backed up all my work from Knoppix. Knoppix supports reading of NTFS filesystems, but will not write.
3. Once I had my backup, I opened shell in Knoppix
4. My hard drive had the name of HDE1. hde represented the drive and 1 the partition. I used the shell and typed:
su (turns you into super-user)
fdisk /dev/hde

once fdisk was running on my hard drive I used delete (d) on the partition. I then used x for expert and the w command (write to disk) This dleted my bad partition on reboot and allowed me to reinstall windows.

I am adding a second SATA drive to my computer. I have an ASUS A8N32-SLI deluxe MB. I plugged the second drive into the SATA3 port, and booted the computer. I went into the BIOS, and I saw the primary drive was listed as IDE Master 3, and the new second drive as IDE Master 5. I made sure the boot order was set correctly.

After saving/exiting, windows proceeded to boot, until I got the following blue screen:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

A:How to disable USB/flash-drive showing up in the middle of the screen?

Unfortunately there is no way to exclude just thumb drives from the autoplay feature of Windows. You simply make sure neither of the two thumb drives are plugged in before Windows starts.

Otherwise, if that's not acceptable to you, you will have to disable autoplay for every type of storage media:

Control Panel >> Autoplay

UNTICK "Use Autoplay for all media and devices"

Note: Please update your profile - it still shows Windows XP as your OS. Thanks.

Hello everybody

I'm new to Windows 7 (Ultimate) and like to have a machine that runs nice and fast with no unessential items running in the background. Last night I did a bit of tweaking (mostly in gpedit.msc) and went a step too far, but I'm not sure which step I need to undo and haven't been able to find a solution in a 4 hour google session.

When I click on My Computer, the cupboard is bare. I have a 500gb drive partitioned into C:\ and D:\ and a DVD drive E:\. The right pane is empty, and when I plug in a USB drive it doesn't show either. When I click on libraries, I can manually enter C:\ or D:\ in the address bar but it's a bit inconvenient. I usually use Total Commander rather than Windows explorer, but it's been difficult to set up my downloads location etc as they don't appear in the available options. In device manager the disk is showing.

Self inflicted, I know, but I would be very grateful if anyone could come up with a (probably simple and I'm just missing it) solution.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is caused by the CMOS battery on the motherboard being dead, and everytime you restart your computer or turning it off, you lose the settings in bios. Corrective action, replace the battery. It is a silver coin shaped battery about the size of a quarter. it should be a CR2032 battery and they can be purchased for about $3 at Walmart, or about $5 at Radio Shack. Or if you have a local Computer Shop in your area they wuld have them, most major stores that would sell Electronics should have them.

I also have a device that plugs into the IDE Port on the motherboard and a red sata cable can be attached to the end and then attached to my SATA Hard drive. But I can't get the computer to boot from the SATA Drive or just let me get the files with explorer. What can I do to get those files and back them up until I get a better pc?

Here's the deal: I threw away my old computer, but kept the Windows 7 SATA drive. I bought a new computer with Windows 8, and plugged my Windows 7 drive into the next SATA slot hoping to be able to setup a dual boot mode. Of course, nothing is ever that easy.

I can access the Win 7 drive through the file explorer as if it was an external HD, but it is not bootable. The disk manager lists the Win 7 drive as an "active, primary partition".

What do I need to do to be able to make my Windows 7 disk bootable? I can only assume it has something to do with the UEFI, but I'm not sure.

Hello Jim,

You might double check using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to see if the mouse has the Allow this device to wake the computer box checked in it's "Power Management" tab.

Devices - Allow or Prevent to Wake Up Computer

Hope this helps,

I have a clients HP desktop that I am trying to fix. It is probably 6-7 years old and is running XP. I turn on the PC and it makes all the noises of starting, but nothing shows on the monitor. The lady said there was a bad storm and then after that the computer did not work. My guess is there is some hardware failure. The fans in the computer seem to be working. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks

Recently my computer started acting up and shutting down randomly while under high load. Now it won't even boot into the bios and I'm left with a blank screen. On my motherboard I'm getting an error 62 (Installation of PCH runtime services) and when I tried using a new graphics card, I would get an A6 error (Detection of SCSI devices). Anyone know what's going on and how I can fix these errors? I am under the assumption right now that I fried my gpu but before I just go and buy a new one I'd like to be sure my problem is not solvable without new parts.

In My Computer, where it shows HDD's, cd-rom's, etc. It shows I have an
LG DVDRAM GSA-E10L [USB] a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-612 [IDE] and an
NEC NR-7700A CD-RW [IDE]. (Total 3 right?)

- a few days ago I was having problems with the Samsung, so I uninstalled it and re-booted. After the re-boot there was: all the mentioned above, plus it was showing another CD-Rom.
I went to console and it showed the 4th drive (which I don't have) as a generic CD-Rom of the SCSI device type.
I repeated the uninstall and re-boot and there was a 5th drive (same properties as the previous apparition)

Does anyone know what happened here?

Let me add that I have installed: DAEMON Tools, and this was my first suspicion. But, I don't know.

A:Solved: My Computer showing a drive that I don't have.

Daemon Tools is a utility for mounting virtual drives , as you probably know if you installed it . Launch the Daemon application and unmount all drives . You could also go to Device Manager (Right-Click My Computer , select Hardware) and uninstal the drives but if Daemon is set to load on startup and automatically mounts the drives you do need to change the settings within Daemon Tools .

I have a Sandisk Ultra 32 GB flash drive which won't show up in my computer. When I plug it into the USB port the computer makes a sound as normal to acknowledge that the device has been plugged in but it doesn't show up. What I think used to happen was that the computer made a sound, the light flashed for a few seconds and then the computer made a second sound and the drive showed up in my computer. The light on the drive is flashing on and off all the time. I went into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management but again the flash drive does not show up under removable drives. I then went into control panel, device management and opened up disc drives. When I do this my Sandisk Ultra USB device shows up. there is no red x or yellow exclamation mark beside it. So I right clicked on the drive and choose uninstall. The drive disappears. I then went to the top, right clicked and selected scan for hardware changes. The drive now reappears. If I right click and choose properties it states this device is working properly!

I have opened the device and removed the innards in order to check the four connections of the USB connector to the circuit board but there are no breaks and everything appears to be normal. If this was an empty flash drive I'd simply throw it in the bin however it isn't empty. My mother has Alzheimer's and is now in a home. When clearing out her house I came upon thousands of old photographs which I have been scann... Read more

A:Flash drive not showing up in My Computer.

With the drive plugged in, does it show up in the "Safely Remove Hardware" list? (icon in lower right notification area).
If it does, click on that to remove it, then unplug it from the PC and reboot. After Windows starts, connect it and see if Windows recognizes and allows you to display the contents.

If not, go to the Device Manager, uninstall the drive, then disconnect it from the PC. Reboot the PC and after Windows starts plug it in and Windows should detect it as new hardware and install it and it should work. Doing the uninstall and then scan for new hardware is iffy - sometimes it works but usually you wind up with the same problem.

One of these two suggestion usually work.
