Hyper-V Ubuntu server can't be connected too

Q: Hyper-V Ubuntu server can't be connected too

I'm trying to run an Ubuntu server off of Hyper-V
I set up an external network, run the server software, and I cannot connect to the server from an outside computer. I need the outside world to be able to access it but even with the terminal running, the executable says port is listening, but when I scan
for an open port at my IP address, no luck .
It's a private game server so I need people outside of my home network to be able to connect to the VM box through my static IP my ISP gave me. The problem seems to be that the external connection is still giving the VM a DHCP assigned IP rather than the
static IP from my modem, which others would connect to.
Thanks for the help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is it possible to install Windows server 2012 Hyper-v on windows 8 Hyper-v? or should I use Wmware Workstation.

A:Virtualize for test Win2012 Hyper-v server on Windows 8 Hyper-v?

You can't run hyper-v (any version) inside a VM so neither would work,
and even if you could it would be so painfully slow as to be unusable.

I am afraid this may be beyond the scope of these perticular forums but I figure if I cast as wide a net as possible I have a better chance at catching an answer.

I am running hyper-v on a 2012 windows server with many ubuntu and other os vm servers. This is just a lab setting at the moment as I am preparing it for a future applications, but here it is.
I am attempting to use one of the vm's as a "router" to provide internet access to the other vm's and to a switch (and many other clients through the switch). I have found a bit of information on setting up this "router" with bridges and port forwarding in the ip-tables but I am struggling to get it to actually work in my setting.
on hyper-v I have 3 virtual switches set up;
one that connects to the modem using a card I will call eth0, it is an external virtual switch
one that is internal that has all of the vm's attached to it (and just it, with the exception being the "router vm") eth1
one that is external that connects to the switch that SHOULD provide internet to all of the other computers on the network (eth2).

I have attempted to bridge the connection from eth0 to both eth1 and eth2. Now I have tried this a few different ways so far with no success.
Can anyone point me in the right direction so far for what I may be doing wrong and if this is possible without a lot more work?
also, am I right in assuming that once the bridge is set up, using any of the many different ip-table configuration... Read more

Apologies for the very basic question, but this is my first attempt at creating a virtual machine within Windows 10 pro using hyper-v. I have created a VM, and during the process allocated a drive/folder for that VM, and selected the Linux iso file that should be installed. When I run the VM, it runs the install from the iso file, and gives several options for the install, the first of which is to create a new install, erasing all data from the existing hard drives.
I'd just like confirmation, before I hit go, that the install will erase all data only from the VM drive/folder selected, and not my complete Windows 10 installation.

As long as you are doing this in your Hypervisor, it will not affect your system at all. It's just your VHD(virtual hard disk) that gets formatted.

I have an instance of Ubuntu 18.04 running on Hyper-V on Windows 10. Windows 10 connects to the internet through our office LAN over Ethernet just fine - I am using it to post this question - but Ubuntu isn't receiving the internet connection.

How do I make the virtual machine connect?
Here's a screen print of the ipconfig for the Windows machine (with identifications redacted):

I first tried using the Hyper-V virtual switch set to the default virtual switch, with no success. Here are screen prints for the ipconfig for the default virtual switch and the corresponding Ubuntu command along with the configurations used in the virtual
machine, followed by the resulting screen print showing the connection failed:

I next tried using the Hyper-V virtual switch to create a new virtual switch, with no success. Here are screen prints for the ipconfig for the new virtual switch and the corresponding Ubuntu command along with the configurations used
in the virtual machine, followed by the resulting screen print showing the connection failed with this configuration as well:

Note: While I've redacted, I note that the ipconfig result for DHCPv6 Client DUID and DNS Servers, and the GENERAL.HWADDR for the Ubuntu command in the new switch are identical to that of the default switch.

And finally here are the network connections:

Hello:I've been having an issue with my Dell XPS Desktop (Intel Ethernet Connection I219-V Ethernet card).
When I connect this server to my router by an ethernet cable, all other other computers connected (Hardwired or Wifi connected) disconnect themselves from the internet. I get the same response when I connect to the Wireless Wifi as well.
It happens only with this Desktop running Windows 10.
I was told to change the DNS address to the OPENDNS Addresses - I tried and I had no luck. I do not have the Ethernet card or the Desktop in powersave mode. They do not go to sleep when idle.
Can someone please make any suggestions. Any input from your end would be very much appreciated.

Since I couldn't find the suggested setting to just turn some hyper-V settings on I thought I dont have it on my computer. After installing Hyper-V though my computer went server mode and I have no experience of that. Now I want to remove it from my comp but dont know how and googling doesn't help :S I dont mind formatting the computer, nothing too important there and after the uninstallation of Hyper-V I will install xp on it too. This is the first time using the forum so I apologize if this has been put in the incorrect place. My brother recently installed Hyper V Server 2012 r2, which boots up everytime I start my laptop. I just want help in how to completely remove the software and help get back my Windows 8. Neither me or him know how to get back to windows 8.

Thanks in advance guys.

A:Help with Windows Hyper V Server 2012 R2

Well, you must have a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB. Go to the BIOS settings, select to have the DVD or USB device as first device. Then it should say "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." if you have a DVD or it will show the OEM or Windows logo directly (USB). When you are prompted for the installation type, choose Custom. Make sure you have backed up your files. Delete every partition of Disk 0 and then choose the Unallocated Space to install.

I hope this helps you.

Currently my partner using XP can print to my Epson Stylus Photo R265 printer. This printer is connected via http://192.168.1.2:631 and will print whenever she wishes to do so. I can be working with Ubuntu and this is not a problem.

When I attempt to print from Windows 7 by adding the printer and using the same address I failed miserably to establish any connection. Fortunately I dual boot seven and Ubuntu and access from her laptop can be made as it is automatically linked to my PC. This can be a bit of a problem if I am working with Ubuntu as so far printing can only be done between both seven OS.

My preference would be to have printing available via my USB connected printer using both Ubuntu and Win7 as this will let us work in harmony.

Your assistance in this matter will be appreciated.

A:Printing to Ubuntu USB connected printer

hey scunnered,

I assume that you can print directly to the printer from your windows 7 machine....I am reading your post as you've USB'd the printer to your dual boot machine, so you shouldn't be connecting using the IP address...
I am also assuming that your Win7 machine shares the same IP address with your Ubuntu box.

your windows firewall maybe blocking her connecting whilst using win7. to test you could turn it off momentarily.
also I have read that there could be problems with workgroups/homegroups that are causing issues.....

After i updated to Windows 8.1 Enterprise from Windows 8 Enterprise, Hyper-V does not function correctly.
When I add an iso image to a new virtual server or start one of my existing, I can see the iso file is loaded in the bottom thumbnail.

But when I connect to the virtual server it just says: Connecting to virtual server... and it times out after 5minutes.

All my virtual servers are running locally, they are able to start and are running fine, I just cannot connect to them.
Also the ability to turn virtual servers off tends to hang and I have to kill the processes and restart the services for it to stop.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem?

I have a Win 2003 server, standard edition, 32 bit. This server has 2 x dual core xeons and 12GB of ram. Currently I run several VMs off this machine via VM Server. I have been thinking about migrating to Windows 2008 64 bit and using HyperV instead of VM Server.

First going from 32 bit to 64 bit on the host OS, would that give me any performance boost? Second, how do the two virtual products compare? I have been hearing great things about HyperV.

I am not concerned about cost since I am in Education and get very good pricing on MS products.

Should I just keep things like they are? Reinstall with Win 2008 64 bit on host OS? If so then should I use VM Server or Hyper V?

A:Stick with VMware server or move to Hyper V

With 12GB of RAM, I think you'll see a significant performance boost using a 64bit system since you then avoid PAE.

Hi Everyone,

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64bit on my HP laptop (i7-3632QM, 8GB RAM).
I have configured Windows Server 2008 64bit VM on hyper-v with External Virtual Switch.

Wondering what should I do if I want to create two other VMs (W7 & XP) which only be able to communicate with the Server VM? By that I mean, for accessing Internet, they should go through windows 2008 server VM. Should I create another Switch (Private or Internal) for those two VMs? How these two VMs (W7 & XP) can be configured so that they will use DNS & DHCP server configured on Windows Server 2008 VM?

Any suggestions and/or tutorial links would be greatly appreciated.

One other point I would like to mention here. After configuring that external virtual switch with Hyper-V, HP Support assistant has failed to connect to Internet though I can access Internet successfully. I will create a different post for that.

Thank you.

Hey community. I was hoping for some clarification. I am use to working with VMWare ESXi VSphere for hypervisors. So I have been labbing for my MCSA and I notice alot of the context of MCSA material describes installing an instance of Windows Server 2016,
and then turning that into a Hyper-V Server. What I did was I installed Hyper-V Server 2016 on my ProLiant. Is there any reason why I would not want to do this ? I had to reference alot of white papers, manuals, eventually blogs, and I think a youtube video
or two before I could manage it from my remote PC. It involved adding the target computer via power shell, customizing the hosts file, adding the server within the PC's computer configuration I forget what exactly. I also had to disable the firewall on the

However I was listening to this gentleman's youtube video.

spinning up virtual machines. However I noticed i got some updates on the Hyper-V-Server 2016 the other day and not all of them wanted to install ... I believe some of the updates were for Windows so it went int... Read more

Hi there.

I LIKE the idea of a bare metal Hypervisor - I've tried Esxi (VMware) in the past and although it works it's a bit fiddly on what hardware it works on and there's no CLI for managing VM's --you have to do this with a separate machine using vCenter which USED TO BE FREE -- and now this part is NOT available in the free offering any more (if you upgrade to the latest version of ESXI (5.5) you won't be able to manage / modify VM's any more - at least in the FREE offering -- you have to BUY the latest vCenter -- so I've now junked Esxi.

It seems from Internet discussions that Free ESXI might be being phased out anyway so a good time to jump ship to Ms.

Does 2012 HYPER-V SERVER R2 (it's FREE BTW) work decently as a hypervisor -- I'm only really interested in running Windows VM's.

I actually quite like W2012 SERVER but I don't really need the full server edition for hosting VM's. I want to use W2012 server as a VM anyway.

I've been quite a happy user of VMware workstation in the past but it's quite expensive and needs a full blown OS to run on even though it can now run VM's in the background.

I need to run the following Guest OS's (or VM's) on it ===> W2003 server, 2 XP PRO VM's (one ENG, on ISL), one W7 Enterprise, one W8.1 Enterprise and one W2012 server .

The Host machine has plenty of RAM and storage and has a decent 3.2 GHZ QUAD processor in it so running these VM's should be fine in theory... Read more

A:HYPER-V SERVER R2 (Esxi 5.5 needs PAID vCENTER - vmware)

Vcenter server was Never free Jimbo.

You can still use the existing client to manage vms on the free esxi 5.5, but you need to be sure that you do NOT upgrade the vm hardware on these VMs to version 10. Even newly created vms will start as version 8, it's a manual process to upgrade them and it comes with a warning that the web client will be required.

I'm actually pretty surprised this is being handled this way, but it's not likely a big issue unless you ignore the warnings.

HyperV was never a product I liked. Prior to Windows 8, remotely managing vms was a total nightmare with a bunch of dcom stuff you had to manually set up. It's still a crapshoot whether a Linux vm is going to work. I steer clear of this supervisor.

Citrix Zen server is a free product. Pretty good too.

A:No Wifi on Ubuntu but wireless lan is connected and G.Card problem

1) Run System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. See if the nvidia drivers there are installed properly. If so and it still doesn't work then you need to update your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and specify that your device uses nvidia. You can do it manually or type "sudo nvidia-xconfig". Be sure to back up the xorg.conf file (though nvidia-xconfig should do it automatically) so you can revert back to your old .conf file if anything breaks.

2) It's connected? When you type "ifconfig" in a terminal, do you get an IP? I'm assuming that DHCP isn't working properly or something. Try typing the following:

sudo dhclient <adapter name, probably wlan0? Get this from ifconfig>
sudo ifconfig <adapter> down
sudo ifconfig <adapter> up

You could also just try clicking on the icon or something, since it should be refreshing (down/up) anyways... If it doesn't work, maybe contact your school's IT people? You never see the login page in ubuntu? Or it doesn't work AFTER the login page?

Database Server CPU Comparison: Athlon MP vs. Hyper Threading Xeon

If you wanted to find out what the fastest desktop CPU is, it would just take a few clicks and you would have 10 reviews at your disposal. If you're trying to put together a workstation system, you'll have a bit less to go off of but there is still more than enough information available to help make your decision. But when it comes to servers, the information flow is severely reduced.

Generally speaking, you'll find reviews of individual servers from Dell and HP but you won't find the type of component level comparisons we're used to seeing in the desktop and workstation sectors.

There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, it's very difficult to test the performance of CPUs and platforms in a server environment without actually setting up such an environment. Especially as you get into the 4-way and beyond realms, it becomes very difficult to stress those systems. There are industry standard benchmarks that can be used but again, they are very costly to run and require a great deal of setup. In the desktop and workstation worlds, you simply load up the application you wish to measure performance under and find a benchmark to help you gauge... Read more

There is no bootable recovery media or utilities capable of working even if the entire drive gets nuked and all partitions are erased. So I want to be careful about this and make sure that no recovery partitions or the EFI partition can be erased on my main drive, therefore I would like to install Ubuntu and the Grub EFI bootloader to a USB powered external hard drive. When installing on an MBR system I would simply select my external drive sdb2 as the device for bootloader installation at the bottom of the partitioning /dev/sdb2 and it would install the bootloader to the MBR of my external drive sdb2, however with EFI it appears I will need to set the installer to use the EFI system partition on /dev/sdb1 (or whatever partition number it gives it.) A:System won't boot (Ubuntu server 12)

Hi, From your photo it looks like a hard drive failure.
But if the pc is very old or unknown to you, I would check if the BIOS battery is ok, or it will keep going back to default settings, if the battery is low or flat.
But it would be worth swapping the hard drive for a known good one just to prove the point.
If you can get into the BIOS, make the first boot device to be the CD/DVD drive, save the settings and exit.
Then if you have a Linux distro on cd that will run as 'live', (say from a 'Linux User' mag coverdisc), reboot the pc with that cd in the drive, then let it go to the desktop, then use the install icon to install the O/S to the hard drive.
If the RAM is faulty you won't get past the power on self-test (POST) and you will get warning 'beeps' (if the pc has a speaker module inside).
Hope that helps !

The firewall in my machine is off according to Webmin, but I can't ping my server and I can't access my machine's Apache HTTP server or Webmin from the LAN. I know these functions are running because I have an OpenVPN client running on this machine, and I can access these services via the VPN.

What do I need to do on this server to be able to remotely access its services ?

Thank you in advance.

I have a little home server running ubuntu that I've been using for 2 years to share files locally and store files. Recently the built-in NIC on the server's mobo died. So I purchased an NIC that plugs into a PCIe port. I popped it in, changed its name from eth1 to eth0, and edited my router preferences so it assigns it the same ip that it's always had.

Now when I go to access it from any of my windows computer it just won't connect and I get "windows cannot access \\myserver (error code 0x80070035 network path not found).
I am able to access it with my android tablet through ESfilebrowser with no problem at all.

I'm a little stumped since nothing really changed except the MAC address of eth0.

A:Can't connect to my ubuntu server anymore

\\myserver access network shares. So SAMBA on linux. Does ESfilebrowser also access network shares or another protocol?

Can windows ping ip address of ubuntu server?

I have a Packard Bell desktop that still runs XP. Yeah, I know, bear with me...

I would like to dual boot it with Ubuntu Server but I read two interesting posts which I will follow:

1. First someone (edwar) suggested to use a Virtual Machine. Both Virtualbox and VMware Player are free. That way you can run both Windows and any flavor of Linux you want along with older versions of Windows at the same time. No need to restart to go to the other OS. Best thing since sliced bread.

IMHO this is not an option for me since XP is already installed. I don't think I can install a VM and then move my XP into the VM. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

2. Then someone suggested to install the 2nd OS on another HDD. I like that a idea. I just couldn't find that post anymore. AFAICR he said:
- install 2nd HDD
- unplug 1st HDD
- reboot with Ubuntu installation CD
- install Ubuntu on 2nd HDD
- plug in 1st HDD
- go into BIOS and set it so that it asks which HDD to boot from

Is the above more or less correct? If so I'll try to do just that one of these days.

A:Dual boot XP and Ubuntu Server edition

Yes it's always best to boot from BIOS to avoid issues.

Set preferred OS HD first to boot in BIOS setup,

then when needed trigger other OS HD using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key.

Let us know how this works. There are other options if it isn't desirable, like installing EasybCD to Windows to add the other OS: Dual boot Ubuntu-Win7

A:i want to remove ubuntu server and install windows 7

Hello HELPMEPls, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below, after you remove Linux you may need to mark the Windows partition Active and do the 3 separate startup repairs to get Windows booting again and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

BTW, please don't multi post, the other one will be removed.

Ahh....everyone loves dual booting

Before we get started....I need you to choose a bootloader

GRUB - Open Source Bootloader that can literally boot any OS BUT if you uninstall Ubuntu, you won't be able to boot until you run a startup repair on Server 2008

Windows - It is fine but you will have to use easyBCD or the command line to add a manual entry for Ubuntu. You will also half to change one step of the Ubuntu installation to make sure you don't overwrite the Windows one

Let me know which you decide LOL

Hello, I have installed hyper-v on a lenovo thinkpad t470 (and tested this problem on 3 other t470 thinkpads). The thinkpad has: a) an Intel RJ45 adapter b) a Sierra wireless adapter EM7455 c) an Intel wireless 8265 adapter Hyper-v does work correctly as long as there is an RJ45 Ethernet cable connection plugged in (and connectivity). When you remove the RJ45 connectivity it instantly disables the wireless adapter (intel 8265), whatever you try the wireless adapter remains unusable. As a test, I also upgraded the intel 8265 adapter to an intel 9260 adapter ... but the problem remains. I have to say that they both use the same intel driver. If you try to enable the device in the computer management console, it is instantly disables it again after a few seconds. This seems to be specifically related to the lenovo t470 laptop as we don't have that kind of problems on other laptops. I also tried to enable/disable some BIOS options etc ... Has anyone experienced similar issues or has any ideas how to solve the problem? I would really appreciate some help as I have absolutely no ideas ... what else to try. Here was my original post in the Microsoft forums ... but that didn't help either: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/azure/en-US/939f4a3b-9d3e-4f10-8384-189d952a4b5e/hyperv-... Thank you very much! Kind regards, Didier

Hello Everyone,
Thank you for checking the query, this is with regards to a setup for ATA 1.8, where most of the DCs are Virtual and around 20 Hyper-V hosts each having 1-2 DCs and other VMs for other functions, under normal conditions either you could go with approach
1 or 2 as below
1. Install  ATA lightweight Gateway on each DC - No approved.
2. Install ATA Gateway on Each Hyper-V host to receive Mirrored traffic from DCs on that Hyper-V host -
No feasible
But we need to check the possibility of approach 3, based on the article below

3. DCs on Different Hyper-V hosts to mirror traffic to ATA Gateway(s) on Different Hyper-v Host(s)

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/advanced-threat-analytics/configure-port-mirroring#supported-port-mirroring-options

ATA Gateway
Domain Controller
                           Considerations

Virtual
               Virtual on different hosts

Make sure your virtual switch supports this scenario.

So the bottom line is Does Hyper-V allow or can it be configure to sent the Mirrored Traffic from a VM to a VM on another Host, the configuration could involve power shell.
As per the below article it can capture traffic from Physical machine if port mirroring is configured to the Hyper-V host.

I am using Windows 10 Insider Preview 11082 (upgraded from Windows 1151 fully updated.

I had installed the Hyper-V feature in the latest Windows 1151 but had not used it before I received and installer the Insider Preview edition.

The Hyper-V Manager was configured OK but when I tried to start a VM I created (in this case Windows Server 2016 TP4 since I want to explore the new nested Hyper-V feature) I got the message that the Hyperrvisor was not running. Indeed when I created the services admin tool the HV was not running although it was set to staRt automatic. I could not start it - failed immediately. Most annoying I could not remove the Hyper-V feature. Windows started the removal process after rebooting but then rolled the changes back because it could not apply them. I restored Windows 10 from a recent image I created using AOEMI Backupper. The restore worked flawlessly and instead of trying to remove Hyper-V I've disabled all its processes. Now I can install VMware Workstation and Virtualbox but I really wanted to try Hyper-V

Has anybody got Hyper-V working on Windows 10?- what version if so. Is there a workaround for the Insider Preview or if not how I can I file a bug?

TIA
V

I have a problem that has me stumped. I have a Ubuntu Media Server (OS Version 14.04.1) running Samba 4.1.6. I have a Win 10 laptop (upgraded in August from 8.1) and Win 10 desktop (upgraded Jan 11th from Windows 7). The laptop doesn't (or very rarely) discovers the Samba shares. Windows sees the two other Windows PC's under the Network section. It doesn't seen to recognize the printer attached to the server. Print jobs seem to disappear into nowhere even though the printer is "there" under devices. It is also seen in Belarc Advisor. It does, however, always recognize the mapped drives of the 3 individual Samba shares on the server. It also discovers the Plex Media Server I have installed. It is under the Media Devices Section in Network. The desktop under both Win 7 and 10 discovers both the Network shares and the samba shares (and the network printer) connected to it as well as the Plex Media Server. I've attempted to match setting for setting from the desktop to the laptop (Advanced Sharing Options), but that hasn't solved the problem. Because it works on one system and not the other, I don't see where my Samba configuration is the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Win 8.1
The symptom is 2 adapters in Device Manager that I can't remove:

From time to time, this problem interferes with the Ethernet card on the PC, and I lose all connectivity for the host OS.  So I really need to fix this.  I've currently recovered connectivity by deleting my VM and the virtual switch in Hyper-V
manager, but I'd like to resolve this problem properly by eliminating these 'unattached' adapters.
I've read many posts and still am not convinced I know which steps to take.  Many of the posts seem a little dated, so I'm concerned I'll create additional problems if I follow old stuff.  Here are a few of the solutions I've seen on the boards:
1) edit the registry, up to 50 times.  This doesn't sound like a great idea but if that's what it takes...

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/20e826af-b484-48d8-ac24-c3e7c4cc30fd/cannot-remove-ms-virtual-network-switch-adapter-leftover-of-hyperv  and

2) remove the adapter in something called the Administrative Website.  I don't really know what that is.  Is that a current piece of software for use with Hyper-V on Win 8+?  I have been using the Hyper-V manager.  Is that not good
enough?  If Administrative Website is relevant, where do I find a copy for Win 8.1?
