Black Screen after Windows update - Display driver issue

Q: Black Screen after Windows update - Display driver issue

Good day!

After installing the latest update for Windows 10 (Version 1607, OS Build 14393.222), the screen just went black! I noticed that I'm already logining in windows from the light of the fingerprint but I couldn't see anything on screen.

I tired to format everyting in the PC and reinstall Windows back again through entering the Recovery Screen. I was able to get the screen back but this time the brightness was full and I couldn't change the level of it. I did some search about this issue and then I manually update the display adapter (Intel HD Graphics 520) from the device manager. After this update the screen went off again!
I then tried to reinstall windows again and I connect my laptop to HDMI port. I was able to view everyhing in the extended screen but when I project to the PC screen I don't get anything.

I disabled the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver and by doing so I was able to see the screen back in PC. So it seems it's a driver issue. I tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it again with the lateset version (Version but when I enable it the screen goes black again.

Now the display adapter is disabled and I can't change anything in the screen settings or control the brightness. What is the solution?
Also the screen goes black while browsing some sites with malicious content.Yesterday was going through a site
I encountered black screen.
What is the solution?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi guys. I've searched over the forums for a similar problem and I've found that people say to boot in safe mode. The problem with that, however, is that I only get a black screen when I start up and don't know how I would boot in safe mode. This started after I updated the display driver. Reformatting would not be an issue if someone could explain how to do it without being able to see. Thanks.

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition.

if you're getting a blank screen, this a no post. Do you see a ram or bios test when you power on? Read my NO POST guide in the guides forum.

Booting into Safe Mode is done during the initial boot stage by pressing a key (as per your manual) - are you not seeing ANYTHING during boot (the Bios screen)?

Hi Guys

I have a problem that I cant seem to solve I have tried everything that I have found online to solve this problem. Right after I install the latest Nvidia Drivers for my laptop my screen goes BLACK after the windows logo when I reboot.

My Specs:
Windows 10 Home 64Bit (Fresh/Clean Installation)
Acer Aspire E 15 (E5-572G)

Things that I have tried already without any success:

Install older versions of the driver
Download drivers from different websites
I dont seem to get the cursor that some people are talking about
Cant log in or access anything with my black screen (Blind login)
I install windows 8.1 64bit but still same problem so im back to windows 10
Pressed the windows+P button to change to primary screen ( Or ctrl+P) but no change
Plugged in a different monitor (VGA and HDMI) still nothing
Installed the drivers in a lower resolution

After doing all this still no success

#Just a extra note

I dont know if this could have anything to do with this but I was busy playing a game before this problem started and in the middle of the game the graphics card driver crashed multiple times with a pop up that said something about your nvidia driver xxxxxxx has stopped working then my laptop froze. When I do a restart its fine again. I havnt done a format in 10 months so I thought its about time to get a fresh installed windows again so I installed a fresh copy of windows 10 home but after the format im having this problem which is also right after the driver crash probl...  Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

I figured out that in my display settings instead of showing my main monitor it only sho... Read more

Recently my Lenovo Y50-70 laptop suddenly started acting weird right after Windows 10 update. It got worse a couple weeks later after a May 2017 Windows 10 Anniversary update. So I updated the graphics drivers and ever since then my laptop will take hours to boot up. I changed the power settings so it does not go into sleep mode as that was the first issue I noticed when issues started - it would go to sleep or hibernate and would not come back without hard start. I turned off the screen saver, changed power settings so that screen & laptop wont hibernate or sleep. Made sure Windows Updates all up to date. Tried to Skype to take a peek before removing it but it wont open and I got a message saying "Cant be opened using the Built-In Administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again." I have no idea what that means. There is only the one account on here and only I use this laptop. If that was as bad as it got I could deal with this but... Last night I was trying to backup everything and eventually fell asleep waiting for reboot to kick in. The OS was booted up when I woke up this morning and I decided to restart it after my backup to external drive failed........ bad decision on my part there as I have spent last 12 hrs trying to get this stupid thing into Safe Mode, or BIOS or even just regular start up. Nothing. As of 9am today I can not even get it to boot at all it just keeps running, lights on, fan spinning but nothing happening ... Read more

Okay, just created an account to post this in case some people might have encountered a similar issue and have suggestions on fixing it long-term.
My Dell 7348 was fine running Windows 10, but after updating to the Creators Update and rebooting, it would freeze and get stuck on the black screen with spinning white dots (after the initial screen with the white Dell logo).
Several reinstalls later using a WIndows 10 USB key installer, and I finally isolated the cause: the Intel HD 5500 Graphics drivers. I tried three versions of the Intel Graphics drivers to see if there was a difference:

The package on Dell's support page for the 7348, which installs Intel Graphics Driver
The drivers fetched by Windows 10 via Windows Update, which also installs Intel Graphics Driver
Intel's official and latest drivers, which installs the newer Intel Graphics Driver

All three of them, on reboot, would still get me stuck on the black screen with spinning dots. Even on a fresh and clean installation, with new partitions and all.
But guess what lets me boot and reboot without any problems every time? Yup, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers. Using those, I have no booting problems at all.
So if you're having the same issue as me booting/rebooting into Windows 10 and your Dell laptop uses Intel Graphics drivers, this is a workaround you can use.
A quick thank you for reading this far, so I'll get down to the question: does anyone ... Read more

Hey, guys--I need some urgent help. A friend of mine has been having trouble with her laptop's display driver, and to make a long story short, she uninstalled (intending to reinstall it since the driver was apparently fully up-to-date.) and got a black screen, forcing her to turn her computer off. Now she'll try to boot it up but the screen will remain black, we've tried:

Unplugging it and the battery and holding the power down for 30-60 seconds to no avail.

I assumed that it may still be loading everything up--just not displaying it, so I told her to hold down F8 and press down 6 times and enter to boot from the last known safe configuration, but when she held down F8 the computer didn't beep like it usually would opening up that prompt--and we weren't able (We don't think?) to boot from that.

I'm at a complete loss as to what to do--she's a college student, so her laptop is of vital importance, I need to try and help her resolve this ASAP. I'm giving her instructions over the phone.

She can turn the laptop on and the power lights all come on, we just can't see anything--if we did manage to get to the F8 menu we weren't able to see it. We're basically flying blind, and her computer didn't come with any sort of installation discs--even so, she needs the files stored on her computer. If anyone can offer any assistance as to how to restore her display, you'd be saving us both a lot of grief.

Thank you so... Read more

Hello, I am not 100% sure where to post this. But as my computer is a Windows Vista, I'll try here.

When I attempt to edit videos using Cyberlink Powereditor, the videos appear black with working audio.
Same scenario happens if I compress videos with WMM, and then attempt to watch them. Black screen, clear audio.
I've had this problem for quite a while.
Attempts I've done to fix: Codecs, different media players, and updating graphic driver.

A:[SOLVED] Display Issue, Black screen with Audio

Problem solved. If anyone else is experiencing the same problem, my graphic card is "Nvidia geforce 9600 gt"
I simply "rolled" it back to an earlier version instead of "updating" it.
Then it didn't work, so I reinstalled it manually by using nvidia's download page.
Now it works perfectly, and I can edit anything in cyberlink powereditor.

Hi there,  i was working on the computer yesterday when all of a sudden my screen turned black and white, and hasn't gone color except when it's locked. I can't find anything in the control panel to fix it, and my drivers are up to date. I have an ASUS x750ja laptop running Windows 8.1.

The problem: From startup (including bios logo), the screen briefly displays what it should, then goes black. Bios logo, then black. If I enter the bios, it goes black at the first screen. It'll flash the Windows logo, then go black.

I've hooked it to a secondary monitor via HDMI. It seems like a hardware error, but whenever the monitor gets a signal to refresh, it flickers back on. For example, when I have it hooked to the external display, and configure it to extend the display, the laptop screen turns on for a second.

Furthermore, the brightness keys still function.

It then just sits there until finally a blue screen crash. I then have to go in to safe mode, uninstall the new drivers and put the old ones back on.

I have tried burning the newer drivers and installing them from a disc directly through device manager but i have the same issue. It did, however, correctly install the newest beta drivers i found here (180.42) but when i tried to run either Warhammer Online or WoW it said it couldnt find a correct display driver or something.

If you updated your nvidia card and get a blank screen the problem is most likely the same as mine because the new drivers put the default screen to the tv so just connect your card to the tv and put the default to your normal screen.

Yesterday my computer shut down and restarted with a message that read "Serious error: Display driver error." I followed many of the options the error message directed me to such as updating my display driver (Radeon x300) and doing many other updates that Windows had recommended; along with diagnostic tests that led me to no conclusions. I have not had the display driver error message pop up since, however when (and if) the computer does restart I am only able to me on the computer for a limited amount of time as the screen turns black and the monitor light turns amber. Sometimes it will switch back to green and eventually come back again; but other times it does not. In addition, whether or not this is unrelated I don't know, when I restart the computer a message appears saying "Drive 3 not found Press F1 to continue, or F2 to setup."

I'm not the greatest with computers but I'm sure I could follow along easy enough with some layman's terms. After being 2 days into trying to solve the issue, any advice or suggestions are much appreciated. I'm happy to provide any more information if anyone needs it.

So, I purchased my uncle's old computer, but he doesn't remember the serial number and they through the box away.  I noticed that it would go to the black screen once powered and then the caps lock would flash 1 time and then pause for 3 secs and flash again at the 4th second.  I have removed the harddrive from the laptop and scanned the harddrive for viruses and checked to see if any problems.  He had viruses, but I cleaned those off and placed the harddrive back in the system.       I wanted to know if there is a chart or anything that I can go by to fix this issue?  I wanted to fix it up and donate to the student in Africa who is going to college.  I purchased my uncle's because he had received a new computer for a holiday (Father's Day) and it was nothing wrong with it, when I first talked to him and he got a new computer.  Help me please and thank you so much for the insight!

So I just recently put a new HDD in my brothers computer which has now caused it to start giving a black screen with a white line across it on startup after the windows logo.

It was fine before this and the only way I have found to solve this is to boot into safe mode and uninstall the video card drivers.

The drive was previously run in RAID on my machine and formatted afterwards, so I dont see why there would be any issues with with, nor the video card.

I have an HP DV8T entertainment laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GT 230M. The current driver is version 267.67. The latest from Nvidia is 280.26.

When I install 280.26, everything appears to go great...until I re-boot. I get the boot screen with the windows logo and the swirly dots. After that, nothing. Just a black screen with the cooling fans screaming.

I tried to uninstall the current 267.67 driver and then install the 280.26 version but I get a pop-up that says "No compatible device found." I also tried to "Uninstall current driver" from the custom install menu on the Nvidia installer. Again, everything appeared to go well until re-boot. Logo, swirly dots...black screen.

Thank goodness for the ability to create system restore points or I could possibly be re-installing Windows.

Any insight as to why I am unable to successfully update this driver?

A:Black Screen After Nvidia Driver Update

Usually, you will want to do a clean installation. Sometimes going from one version of driver to another might cause some issues.

Who manufactured your card? In some cases, specific manufactures 'tweak' their cards and sometimes the reference drivers are not recommended, but to use the manufacturer's drivers. But one thing you might want to also consider is a driver cleaner after you uninstall the current driver you are running with.

Hi. We are having this issue on W7 x86 Ultimate with an Asus M2N-VM DH mobo, which has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE / nForce 430 GPU. If we leave the default driver that Windows installs, we can use Media Center full screen, BUT we can't run the native resolution of the monitor, which is an LG L245WP-BN. When we try to run the install disk supplied with the mobo, which supposedly contains Vista drivers, we get an error saying they "can't be installed on this operating system."
We've been able to install nVidia drivers from other sources, but with *all* the ones we've tried so far, including the 275.33 mentioned here, we get a black screen (with sound) when Media Center is in full-screen mode.
Previously we were running XP MCE and had no such problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

In the driver tab, Update or install driver and choose browse my computer and point to the driver folder you downloaded. This will install the driver only and not the rest of nVIDIA bloat.

And then, it goes ahead and does it itself. The shutting down screen pops up - and that's the last my screen has worked. Period. The keyboard is lighting up so I know it's turning on and off, but that's it. No screen. F11 on a reboot doesn't do anything, either. I wish I were more helpful, I am posting from my cell phone, and I am so frustrated.

A:AMD Driver Update. Black Screen after Restart.

If the harddrive is busy/active youll have to wait it out.

Sometimes theres allot to do and unfortunately its doing it while there is no display making you believe something's wrong.

If the harddrive is calm, and there is still no video, then you'll have to start the computer in safe mode.

Depending on your laptop this may be easy or difficult depending on how new your laptop is and the boot speed..

Get into safe mode and uninstall your video drivers, then reboot.

Safe mode is usually entered by repeatedly pressing F8 during boot, but on newer systems it moves too fast..

Others have has success wailing on the spacebar during boot causing windows to respond as if a boot error and gives you the diagnostics option and safemode.

Hello Everyone!,
I'm Coal143 and a friend of mine has suggested i post my problem on this website after we both came up with nothing despite working on it half a day.

Two days ago, i updated my NVIDIA Drivers to the latest (http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html) Half way through the installation process, the computer screen turned black. Now i didn't think much of it at first and i had to go on my afternoon exercise so i left it there. A few hours later when i came back my screen was still black so i shut my computer down with the power button and restarted it. Everything was working fine the rest of the day. I shut down the computer when i was about to go to sleep, i did see the computer installing a windows update on shutdown, but again thought nothing of it and went to sleep. The next day, after i entered my password and logged on, the computer showed my desktop at a very low resolution for about half a second and then the screen went black. Several restarts later and nothing had changed. I tried a few suggested options i got from searching around on my old laptop but none of them worked. So i booted into safemode and did a system restore. Everything worked fine from then on, like nothing had changed. I noticed that the restore point was set before a "Critical Update" and thought it was mentioned the windows update, So i set windows update to not update unless i told it to. Processor: Intel Core i3-2330M [email protected] GHz
Graphics: Intel HD 3000 & GeForce GT540M (2GB)

So a few days ago when I tried to update the Intel HD 3000 through the Device Manager, a better version was found and started installing it. Suddenly the screen turned to black!
I turned off the laptop and booted in safe mode. I opened Device Manager again and I saw that Intel HD 3000 was replaced by "Standard VGA Adapter"...So I uninstalled it and rebooted again in safe mode and Intel HD 3000 was installed automatically. But the problem was not solved and the same would happen if I tried to update again the Intel HD card through Device Manager.
Generally I have googled very much about this problem but no results. I have downloaded the driver from Intel website to try it manually and again it fails to install.

But here is where it gets more strange:

Nvidia card is supposed to be up-to-date since when I click in Device manager to search online for drivers the message says there is not newer version. But there is not even a sign in my laptop that it is "alive". I mean that I cant even find Nvidia's control panel when I right-click in Desktop or near clock or at my Control Panel...I think thats not normal too.
So I downloaded the appropriate driver from Nvidia website, started installing it and an error appeared: "NVIDIA Installer cannot c... Read more

Hi all,I recently restored my X1 Carbon (4th Gen, type 20FB, Windows 10 home) to factory setting. After the resetting I found that the brightness control didn't work and I could not adjust brightness, so I went to update the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver, and black screen occured right after the update was installed. Now I'm using my laptop with the graphics driver disabled, and I still can't adjust brightness. Any thoughts? Any engineer plz check it!

Hi Everyone, Lenovo System Update installed the 'critical' Intel HD Graphics Driver on our X1 Yoga (20FR) and during the install the display freezes and on reboot we get the spinning dots at bottom of screen. We did a system restore to roll back the drivers and installed them again via the download on Lenovo's web site following their instructions but same probem. Anyone else having this problem but found a solution? Thanks.

Hi ChrisPerry,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.
As I understand that you are facing issue after installing Intel Display driver from Lenovo
If that's the case why not give it a try to update it from Intel one from here. And try to update it from Device Manager manually from zip file.
Do let us know how it goes.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Windows Update is pushing an Intel graphics driver for T480 and T480s that is broken on Windows 10 Pro 1803 OEM. The recommended update on the Lenovo Support site is also broken. After Windows Update has installed this driver, the screen goes black and I have a blinking cursor. The only thing that works is to turn the laptop off and on again but then after initializing windows I'm supposed to be getting the login screen but instead I get a completely backlit black screen that doesn't respond to anything - no cursor, no blinking, nothing. The workaround is topower off and on 3 times in order to go into safe modeuninstall the graphics card driver in Device Manager and check the box to delete the driver fileschange from Yes (recommended) to No (your device might not work as expected) in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Installation Settings->Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices.I've experienced this on 2 T480s and 1 T480 in the last 30 hours, so I know it's a general issue. I can reproduce the issue with a brand new laptop fresh out of the box, not domain-joined. The driver that works is from March 2018. Any drivers after this date seem to produce the above issue. The issue doesn't seem to exist on Windows 10 Pro 1709.

Alright let's see.

How it happened:
I was updating my graphics drivers and my computer screen went blank and had a "_" cursor at the top left of my screen blinking. It stayed like that so I decided to hard reset it.

The Problem:
Now, whenever I try to boot into vista, I see the loading bar and everything and right when I'm supposed to me my log on screen, all I see is a black screen and a mouse cursor in the middle. Also, if I leave it for a very long time, the screen saver kicks in and I see the windows logo going from place to place. This also happens for all different types of safemodes and whatnot.

What I tried:
I went loaded the HD into an external case and deleted the C:\nvidia folder.
Windows DVD repair, wasn't sure what to select.
I also tried to use Driver cleaner with the HD connected to my laptop(didn't work since I can't select another drive than what I'm booted from) and Nasty File Remover (which I can select the external HD) but it didn't solve my problem.
Also tried removing the VGA card and booting it for a while, then turning it off and putting the card back in, didn't work. (Couldnt see what was happening, mobo doesnt have onboard VGA)

Interesting facts:
I have my HD split into 2 partitions, with an installation of vista on each. I booted into my second partition's vista just fine, so it has to be something in my vista installation.
The computer had been working fine with no modificat... Read more

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

A:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

So recently I decided to try to update my display drivers for my Asus Radeon HD 7770 Graphics card in hopes that it would fix some problems I was having. After I finished the update and rebooted there was a black border around my screen.

I have dual monitors, one monitors (the one with the black border) resolution is 1920x1080 and is connected via HTMI and the others is 1680x1050 and is connected via DVI. Only the monitor with the resolution of 1920x1080 has the black border not the second one.

I have also done a lot of research on how to fix this and the most common solution seemed to be to change the overscan settings but I do not have the normal Catalyst Control Center i have something called AMD Vision Engine Control Center and when I open that and go the the display settings the only option is HydraVision which does not seem to have any options to help me.

And one last thing, it seems like the image might be a bit fuzzy or blurry but that might just be a result of the smaller image.

If there are any questions just ask and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
Update : Also, I did check my physical monitors settings and it is set to full and not overscan.
Update 2: - OS is Windows 7 64-Bit
Update 3: I woul rather not roll back the drivers as they were starting to cause problems too.

no display on LCD from start up (no splash screen or cursor) AFTER using  Windows "restart" I do get video from HDMI port to TV After Win 8.1 boots up (visible on TV) ,if I disable intel video 4600 driver and re-enable it , I immediately get video on LCD. If I do a windows "shutdown", and after it shuts down - then press the power button, it will boot up with video on the LCD (still no splash screen, though) BUT, If I do a windows "restart", the computer will start again with no display on LCD. I have done a complete computer reset to Lenovo factory software  and have updated all display drivers and BIOS - to no effect. Have tried disconnecting the battery, unplugging bios battery, 20sec power button hold. Any other solutions out there?

Does anyone know of an Intel HD Graphics display driver that allows you to use an HDMI monitor with Windows 10? I'm using, what I think is the latest and greatest. Driver date is 11/3/2015, version Currently, only able to connect via analog VGA. Thanks.

I got the "ATI display driver has stopped responding and has recovered from an error" several times over the last couple of days where my screen would freeze for a couple of second and then start working again and would display that message. I thought little of it as it did always seem to work afterwards.

Last night however it got extremely frequent happening at least once a minute and i decided to try and restart my computer to see if that would help at all. Now when I try to turn the computer on the screen stays black and will not do anything. I can hear that the computer trying to work as the fans are going and the power light is on, it's just the screen that isn't working.

How to troubleshoot

"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista

I found these guides on how to fix the error message but at the moment both are no good as I can't even use my computer to fix the problem as the screen won't work.

I am pretty sure the reason my computer is doing this is because of outdated drivers as I recently did a fresh install of windows and only installed the drivers that came on the CD I was given with my computer. I should have downloaded the latest drivers online.

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I am unsure of the graphics card at the moment as I can't access the computer but I know that it is an ATI of some sort.

Thanks in advance!

Thank in advance for you help with this issue.

I have a HP Slimline s3020n with and Nvidia 6150 LE onboard for video. Yesterday I had a error come up that said ":your display drivers have been recovered". After that for some dumb reason I hit the power buttom on my comp and now I can't get windows to start.

I have tried doing system recoveries and starting in safe mode, I also tried " boot using last working configuration" that didn't work.

The problem is that my windows looks like it is going to load and then just goes black after 5 seconds of the windows loading screen.

I guess my question is, how do I reload my display drivers when I can't get to windows? I can reload the correct drivers if I can make it to windows. Please provide any help you can guys, I will check back hourly for solutions.

Hi I have a Gateway PIII running Windows XP Pro. Last weekend I was setting up a home network and now when I turn it on the display goes black just after the windows splash screen disappears. Does anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this?

A:Display goes black right after windows splash screen.

Can you still boot into Safe mode.

I suspect either a driver or new start up program.

I'm having a problem where it says "Display driver stopped working and has recovered".  I see where several others have posted about this, but I'm unable to locate a fix here or reply to other similar posts for some strange reason.  I have a 4 month old Inspiron 15 5559 laptop runing Windows 10 Home x64. The problem occurs intermittently  when I go to the tomshardware.com forums.  It occurs most often with Firefox (version 45.0.1) but it also happens with IE11.  It happens usually after I post a note there, then click the back arrow a couple of times to go back to the listing of all the posts.
According to Device Manager, I have version  When I tell it to scan for an updated version, it says I already have the most current driver for the Intel HD graphics 520.
Please advise how I can get rid of this problem.  Thank you.

A:Inspiron 5559 "Display driver stopped working & has recovered" leaving black screen. Win 10.

I have the same issue with Inspiron 7559. But, not just in web browsing. It happens in Word, Peachtree, etc. So, my thoughts are the problem is a Windows 10 display driver issue, which should be fixed by a driver update provided by the manufacturer. I did a system scan on Dell Support Assistant (thy actually are run every week) and my system has the latest drivers, according the DSA. Get on the stick, Dell. Interesting thing is, it doesn't show up in the System Events in the Dell Support Assistant software - not even as an "info" point. It's like Dell is ignoring the Windows error.

Dear Lenovo fellows, I'm facing an issue with a brand new T460s. This laptop has been set on a docking with 2 monitors in order to extend the display. Actually, on this mode, this works perfectly. Sadly, as soon as I take the laptop off the docking, or start it without the docking or an external monitor attached, the laptop screen stays black. When I start the laptop, the lenovo logo appears, the Windows boot logo shows at boot and then black screen again. I've tried the shortcuts (Windows P) to change the view but nothing occurs. The only way to make it work was to uninstall the Intel drivers and come back to Default MIcrosoft standard drivers which doesn't allow duplicate screen. I've tried to update the drivers to the latest version, including the original Intel drivers but still, not working. I've reinstall the whole O/S using the factory CD's and it's the same problem. The funniest thing is at this moment, we found a very old driver from Intel that works. But after a few reboots, Windows 10 finds a newest and install it, even if we deactivate the function to update the drivers in Windwos Update. So it's a never ending loop. The driver gets updated and the problem comes back again. Does anyone of you had such experience and have an idea on how to solve it? this is quite annoying to not be able to use a laptop. Cheers, poy
