[How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

Q: [How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

hi guys,

for those who doesn't know , Kali Linux (ex-Backtrack) is a powerful forensic distro based on Debian, but many of us use Ubuntu (or variants) because it is easier to handle.

so in this tutorial, i will show you how to proceed to add Kali repositories to get Kali tools in Ubuntu.

i am using Kubuntu Trusty personally so this tutorial will reflect it; you have to adjust the procedure slightly if you use Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu or/and with an older kernel

1- open your Software Center/Manager, the application that allows you to pick various softwares (Muon Discover, etc..)

2- go to each link below, click on technical details , select your ubuntu version; important , Trusty is not available yet so you have to choose Raring instead.

Code:
https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux1

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux2
3- click on Source tab , then "add source"

Spoiler

4- copy the links below then add them one by one in order to the source (step 3).
For example for my Kubuntu Trusty 14.04 i have to use Raring

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux1/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux2/ubuntu raring main
5- close and relaunch your software center to see if the lines above are added.

6- now open your text editor, copy the line below, and save the files as: kali.pgp

Code:
-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----
Version: SKS 1.1.4
Comment: Hostname: keyserver.ubuntu.com

mI0ET324YwEEANbSlISrOlAGjxgFRxiN6jk0JIl/vxQ8lapRdxZ4DHDAQdXbX4AuigMBkP5e

mH4ScTdWWPXP/mOQiUUjnQ1bZhzpcbQOb+hEUAqExg==
=fJ+8
-----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----
this is the pgp key needed that will allow you to get the repositories.

7- open Terminal where you saved the kali.pgp file (important), and type:

Code:
sudo apt-key add kali.pgp
"OK" should appears if you successfully done it.

8- Now update your apt-get repositories using this command.

Code:
sudo apt-get update
9- now the repositories are added , you can check them via the package manager (Synaptic, Muon Package Manager, etc...) , if you don't have it ; install it via :

Code:
sudo apt-get install synaptic
10- Open Synaptic (or your package manager) and click on "origin" button in lower left side pane. You will see the Kali Linux repositories.

Spoiler

11- click on any of them, then in the right pane, all the tools available will be shown.

12- click on any tools, select install and apply ; the tools will be installed.
note: some tools may not works because Ubuntu is not Kali , so some incompatibilities will happen.

Thanks for reading.

Preferred Solution: [How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: [How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

I saw that a while ago on HF. I thought it was interesting, then one of my friend told me to not do that as I could "break my system". Apparently, doing that would basically apply Kernel patches for one Kernel to another and it could lead to system instability.

What would you recommend ?

He linked me this also :

A newly discovered ransomware is attacking Linux Web servers, taking aim at Web development environments used to host websites or code repositories.
Russian antivirus maker Dr.Web came across this malware and said that the ransomware needs root privileges to work. Additionally, the company also says it does not yet know how the ransomware infects computers, but taking into account previous Linux-based malware infections, the main culprit may be an open SSH port with weak credentials

The ransomware uses AES encryption to lock down files
As for its modus operandi, when the ransomware launches, it starts to download the ransom message, and then a file containing the public RSA key. The latter key is then used to store AES keys used to encrypt the local files.
When this happens, the ransomware adds the .encrypt extension to each file and places a ransom text message in each folder where it encrypts data.

The ransomware has a taste for Web pages and their associated file extension
The malware specifically targets files in folders that are generally found in Linux Web server setups, or in coding and development environments.
This includes directories like /home, /root, /var/lib/mysql, /var/www, /etc/nginx, /etc/apache2, /var/log, and any directory that includes terms like git, svn, webapp, www, public_html, or backup.

The ransomware also looks for files that have extensions specific to Web development environments like .js, .css, .properties, .xml, .ruby, .php... Read more

A:Ransomware Found Targeting Linux Servers and Coding Repositories

Home users of Linux distros reading the above should not be concerned about being a victim of the above reported malware IF
you are not running as ROOT and are not allowing REMOTE CONNECTION to your desktop. Remote connection is not allowed by
default in popular Linux distros such as Ubuntu. If you are not sure your particular Linux distro is allowing remote connection to your
desktop then you should confirm it isn't if you don't need to access your computer remotely.

I should probably mention that securing your router is very important, too. If you haven't changed the default password and blocked
remote connection if unneeded.....that should be done, too. While in the router settings...check for firmware update, too.

I don't think you will have any luck with booting from an external hdd. Better to use a usb flash drive. Quest has a guide here on installing Kali on bootable flash drive;https://forums.kali.org/showthread.php?21899-Howto-HDD-installation-on-a-USB-key

A:I cant dual boot kali linux in my pc

Sure you can. The following tutorial explains how it can be done. Your notebook is a UEFI version with a GPT format hard disk volume. http://linuxbsdos.com/2015/01/14/how-to-dual-boot-kali-linux-1-0-9-and-windows-78-on-a-pc-with-uefi-... Just make sure that you have created a USB recovery media flash drive before you get started.  Use the HP Recovery Media creator to do that. It will tell you how much capacity the USB flash drive will need to be.

A:wifi not showing kali linux

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! HP computers (most of them) are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. They do not officially support Linux due to lack of tests, HP propretiery and tested drivers, etc... As you probably know, Linux is different from Windows and FOSS drivers here come from the kernel itself. If wi-fi or sound adapter is not recognized OR if it does not function well, it may be due to lack of proper and tested drivers in the kernel. I can advice you try with different still supported Kernel versionsor post in the Linux community >> https://www.kali.org/community/ Kali is special Linux-based operating system not typically used by novice Linux users and not typically run on daily bases. You may also try the most common Linux-based OS Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Hi,

I do however have another set of dell windows 7 disk that went to another computer of mine. The set of 3 disks are.... Dell drivers and utilities, (says on disk, "already installed on comp). Dell disk 2 says.. APPLICATION (already installed.....) cyberlink, power DVD and 3 windows 7. '
can I use these disks? will they work. (I cant afford new software right now). and also could I use a HD out of other computer that had the exact same windows 7 disks installed on?
Thank you in advance;
FRANK

A:loaded kali linux want to go back to windows 7

Usually Dell discs are customized version of Windows. Don't know if it would work on a regular PC. But if you have the Certificate of Authenticity with the Activation Key ( usually a sticker on the machine) , you can try that disc.

If it doesn't work, you can legally download the Windows ISO DVD image file for Windows 7 from here:

http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/

Then you can burn the ISO image to a DVD using a program like Imgburn, a free utility, from here: http://www.imgburn.com/

A hard drive with Win 7 already installed will not work in another computer, that is because Windows is installed / customized to the CPU and motherboard chip set of that PC.

X1 Carbon Gen4- Keep running into errors trying to dual boot on this computer. After trying for a few days, I found some guides and while not much I didn't know already came out of them, I was able to find a few useful suggestions. Still running into some issues, mainly GRUB related. Hard drive failed to recognize the new partition a few times, but mainly GRUB related. Anyone able to give their step-by-step guide, including BIOS changes to help me get this machine to dual-boot Win 10 Pro and Linux? Tired of having to run it from a flash drive and would rather not run it in a VM. I might be getting rid of the computer anyway and going back to a MacBook Pro. Used this computer 10 hours or less and had to send it in for repair. Got it back (new system board and CPU), same problems... sent out again and they replaced the fan. Still getting random 100% disk/CPU usage at times and the idle temps just aren't stable. Very disappointed that this was suppose to be one of the best business-class laptops around and I had to have it repaired twice in less than 2 weeks. I don't trust the Lenovo techs after this. I honestly just want my money back but I doubt that will happen.

So, I was trying to dual boot my laptop Asus K42f with opertating system windows 7 and klai Linux. Unfortunately I formatted my Hard drive while installing Linux. And now I can not find my OS windows 7 and the datas on my hard drive. Does anyone have any idea, how to recover my hards drive and OS windows 7?

A:Recovering Hard Drive on Kali Linux

As for the data, you might recover it using recovery software. There are numerous free recovery programs. Recuva is one that is pretty popular. As for the operating system, you are going to have to clean install.

First rule. Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. If you care about this data, you make multiple backups.

Second rule. Always make a backup image of the hard disk prior to doing any partitioning, dual booting, etc. If something goes wrong, it takes all of 5~10min to restore the image and you are right back where you started.

I decided to dual boot kali with my Win10 wich is my primary OS, I followed the neccesary procedure like creating a bootable kali pendrive, disabling secure boot, enabling Legacy mode, disabling the fast boot, creating a free partition and so on.....The installation went smooth and perfect but I was unable to boot into kali's GRUB after the restart, instead, my machine boot into win10 and not even the so called black screen appeared, I wiped the partitioned space i used for the installation and started the installation all over with different pendrives, sd cards and DVDs and even downloading another ISO image with the intention that either the pendrive or the image had been corrupted but the sha1 sum is still the same with the one on the official website. I really don't care about the GRUB bootloader (if i can use it great please say how) as long as I can boot to both OS's in the boot options. Once the installation is installed on the M.2 SSD I can't boot to it, it comes up with a screen that says there isn't an OS on this drive. This is all done in Legacy mode, my USB won't boot from UEFI mode. I have read articles that have said I need to install Kali on UEFI (or Legacy) mode depending on the other OS, but they have to be on the same boot setting.  Can anyone help with this. Even in windows h drive dint showed up. So i opend partition manager and it showed there as unallocated. So i formated it. And then it showed as a drive in my computer. So i restarted again and proceded with linux installation. And again this time when reached to install on a partition, h drive was missing. This time my f and c drive was also missing. It showed only two drives d and e. And some how e drive had the capaciy of both e and f drive. I closed the installation again and restarted .. and now i am stuck at the boot . Bothing happens. Only a black screen comes with a cursor blincking. Nothing happens after it.
Tried repairing win 7 with dvd, but nothing happened. In windows recovery option there is no os to select.

A:Help need... Lost boot sector while partitioning for linux kali

Drive letters can change in boot mode, this is normal. Judge the partition by its size and any label you gave.

In this case however if you saw differently sized partitions during the install, something must have gone wrong with your partitioning using the Linux (not Windows) tool.

Now you need help recovering Windows, so let's use Windows tools.

Using Diskpart or Partition Wizard CD as shown in this tutorial confirm that the 100mb System Reserved (if you have it) or Windows 7 (if you don't) is Partition Marked Active.

Then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts.

Next post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image telling us what you'd like to do, and so we can confirm the configuration.

If this fails post back a camera snap of Partition Wizard drive map showing all listings and what you think is installed on each partition.

As you already know, messing with the bios can brick a machine if it doesn't go right. Most of these bios versions are intended to mainly fix issues that may (or may not) arise on factory-installed Windows machines. If you're comfortable with and confident in your expertise on flashing, then you have to decide whether or not you wanna give it a whirl. If it were my machine, like my trusty AO722 here that I've had since 2011, I neither have the expertise nor confidence in messing with the bios on a machine that works flawlessly on the factory-delivered operating system. Instead, I decided to run Linux, Win98, WinXP as guests of a Win7 host using VMWare's player. The virtual environment satisfies backward compatibility issues with earlier Windows versions and Linux runs as it should. And the VMPlayer is bullet-proof! Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Jack E/NJ

A:problem in installing kali linux ( win32 loader.ini)

If you were attempting to install Linux in a dual boot environment, it would appear that your Linux installation has corrupted the Windows boot loader. You may be able to resurrect your Windows environment
if this is the case using BootRec /RebuildBCD.
See the instructions here.

The penetration testing and security auditing platform called Kali Linux is now available in the Windows 10 Store as a Linux environment that can be used with the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The problem is someone forgot one little thing. Some of Kali's more popular packages are detected as hacktools and exploits by Windows Defender.

For those not familiar with Kali Linux, it is a Linux distribution geared towards penetration testing, forensics, reversing, and security auditing. Using Kali you can download a variety of security related programs such as Metasploit, Armitage, Burp, and more and use them to test your network for security holes.

In order to use Kali, you will first need to install the Windows Subsystem for Linux from the Windows Features control panel. Once installed, you can go to the Windows Store, search for Kali Linux, and install it for free.

Once you get Kali running and start installing tools, though, you run into a problem. Kali will appear to hang and ultimately error out, while Windows Defender begins to display virus alerts.

It appears that the developers in Microsoft's WSL team forgot to tell the Windows Defender team about Kali Linux's availability. This is because some of Kali's packages will be detected as hacktools, viruses, and exploits when you try to install them!
Windows Defender Quarantined These Kali Packages
If you take a look at one of the detected threats details, you can clearly see that some of the Met... Read more

Hi Folks, Lets start by saying I am a complete nerd with computers so simple answers would be the best, I can follow instructions. I have just bought an Acer Aspire one aoa150 from a friend, it has Linux Ubuntu installed on it but it looks like it originally had windows xp installed on it has it has windows keycode on the bottom of it, the battery is not charging correctly only lasts for about 15 minutes when fully charged and charges to full power in about 10 minutes I know I might have to buy a new battery, I have read numerous accounts about this problem and it seems that it could be that it needs the a BIOS upgrade but the upgrade looks like it is a windows upgrade, so I would like to change it back to xp, looked all over the internet for answers but there are so many conflicting and convoluted views on how to do this. I am totally lost. Please help if you can. Thanks very much

I'm trying to extract the video from my camcorder via Firewire, in LiVES. When I do, I get this error message, and I don't know what it means.

Is ieee1394, driver, and raw1394 loaded?Click to expand...

A:LiVES on Linux (Ubuntu)

ieee1394 = Firewire so the error message is about missing the software to recognize the firewire connection.
