Cortana - Will deleting the Cortana file harm my laptop?

Q: Cortana - Will deleting the Cortana file harm my laptop?

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On all my pc's I now have a "get cortana for my phone" message in all the cortana action windows. How in the heck do I get rid of this? it is screwing up all my viewing habits for weather, sports score etc.

Why does microsoft keep jamming all this junk in the cortana window, I don't want anything except what I choose to have displayed.

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

I'm going to break this into several posts, because there are a few things I want to post about in the hopes it might help some people, and I have some questions I'm hoping people can shed some light on. I don't want to bomb the forum with innumerable posts on a number of unrelated questions/observations, and I can't think where else to put them so I'm choosing to do it this way. I'm still trying to learn my way around this new system, and I keep running, unsurprisingly, into new things I have to learn/W10 differences, etc. I hope it's okay if I do it this way?

CORTANA

So I got Cortana working last night, here in New Zealand where Cortana is "not available" yet. As I understand it, that's only because MS hasn't got all the language/speech/keyboard packages up and running, and not because it's illegal for me to do so. I hope my understanding is correct. If not, please advise and I'll delete this post.

So far, not too many issues. I had only two options available to me?that of UK and US?in all the things you need matching: language, speech and keyboard. Not even Australia was available to me, and yet I?ve read Aussie has Cortana. Do I have that information correct?

Anyway, I downloaded and installed the packs I needed (everything UK, as that is closest to NZ English) and went ahead. I left my location exactly where it was, and it?s working fine that way so far. If I recall rightly, I chose to tick the ... Read more

Hi,

I have been having a problem for months now with Cortana. Whenever I try to talk to her (Hey Cortana/Clicking the mic) she either completely closes her window off or gives me the error message "Something went wrong, please try again later". Exact same thing happening on my ASUS Laptop. This issue persist since october, she worked just fine before.
I contacted Windows Support several times and all they did was break my whole system about twice, look around for like 5 minutes and tell me i have to pay. After how much loss i had with my data they should pay me instead seriously.
Anyways I'm very lost here. I tried everything. I reset her, cleared all her data, even cleaned out my cloud. She is just not willing to work. I'm thinking there is something wrong in my cloud data but since i cleaned that out I don't know anymore.
If anyone knows how to fix this, please help. I'm willing to even use TeamViewer if there is a possible fix.

Unless I click the microphone first. I have a brand new windows 10 computer. I've run set up to have her learn my voice and respond to Hey Cortana, but she will only hear me if I click the microphone first (and she has no problem hearing me). Googled this issue and it appears I'm not the only one with this problem and thus far Microsoft Forums have not really come up with a solution for me or anyone else, other than setting up a new account profile which didn't work. They want me to do a repair in place upgrade which means I'll have to reinstall windows 10. This is a windows 10 computer, not an upgrade. Is there any other option? Can you assist? This Cortana feature seems like some kind of joke. Just installed Win10. Now, everytime my laptop goes to sleep, I have to re-boot to get it going again. I asked Cortana why, and the answer came back with a link to the Beatles' "Why Don't We Do It In the Road"...

A:Who is Cortana?

Answer to thread title: Cortana is the name of a fictional character in the Halo video game.

Now as to your question on it/her, in Windows 10, Cortana is a web search/system & folder search tool, that can be used by voice or text(typing). Like any search tool, you need to be more specific, and if using voice, Cortana needs to be trained. Also when cleaning your system(browser and OS) you need to make sure you DO NOT clean MS search or browser history, so Cortana can learn your interest's, and you can benefit from the advanced search algorithm.

I keep getting Cortana leaping up at me whenever I click on the start box, and want to know how to disable/remove this annoyance. I have read through a procedure using regedit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and so on, that eventually gets me to where I must ensure that an "AllowCortana" value is set to 0 (zero).

I have followed this advice to the letter several times, but nothing is changed once I have restarted my PC. Can anyone please point me the way of correcting this?

Q: Cortana

Have searched but can not find a clear answer. Will Cortana open websites? From what I read, it will providing the website is bookmarked and pinned. Is this correct?
If the website requires login, eg eBay, will Cortana do the login for you? Since Edge will be able to save usernames and passwords, it seems possible. Eg, can I say "Hey Cortana, open eBay" and the eBay login page opens. Then can I say, "Hey Cortana, login to eBay" or will I have to click the login button?
I am asking this for my visually impaired friend. I am wondering if Win 10 with Edge and Cortana could help him. Thanks.

A:Cortana

Hi Artbuc From what I can read, Cortana could already open websites by voice on Windows 8.1 for Phone, so I don't know why the Cortana on Windows 10 couldn't do a such thing http://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-websites-voice-cortanaAs for the login, you can use Cortana to login on Facebook apparently, but I don't know for the other websites.https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/cortana/cortanas-settingsAlso, saving passwords locally in a browser is a security risk, so I wouldn't do that. I would use a password manager instead like LastPass.

I've just activated Cortana but not having much luck.

Is there a guide anywhere as to what can/can't be done with the app?

For example, I added some things to my calendar, and asked if there was anything in there for today (both spoken and typed question).

When spoken, all I get in response is: 'Something's not right. Try again in a little bit'.

When typed, a search is performed, but no documents are found.

It's quite possible I'm totally misunderstanding how Cartana works, but I would have thought that searching my calendar would be fairly basic.

Any help appreciated.

Cortana has been extremely glitchy for the past few days; many have posted about it.
I suspect there may be some transitions going on internally in preparation for a new Build. I'm just guessing though.

Hi people,
I've recently installed Windows 10 and was messing around with the tools and settings, especially the search button next to Start. When I looked into Cortana I enabled her to try it out, but it seems I cannot disable her completely. I want the search feature
as how it was when I installed the OS.
Here is a screenshot (https://gyazo.com/6c338cc261adad458f01f2456b08de3f) of how it looks now, and I would like to get it back to default which looks like this (http://imgur.com/a/W2KHt).
I tried these instructions:

1.Left click on Search
box.

2.Click Sandwich
icon on Top left.

3.Click Settings and Turn
off the button under ?Do you want Cortana to work for you??

This will turn off Cortana on your user profile. If you want to remove Search box in taskbar, right click on taskbar and
click Search and choose Disabled.

But there isn't a "Turn off" feature anywhere to be found. Any help is appreciated!

I have only had W10 for a few days and it's keeping me entertained.
I just used Cortana. I said "I can't install windows updates"
This is where Cortana took me. I don't need a dictionary any more.
You might think this isn't all the great, but to a old man it's pretty impressive. I now have someone with a very sweet voice to talk to and she is very nice. She said she liked me. How cool is that??
I recommend giving W10 a try. You have 30 days to try it and then roll back if you don't like it. I recommend the clean install rather then the upgrade.

hi, I am absolutely upset by this. I just received my brand new lap top from Dell this morning and when I go to Cortana she ask you to sign into your Microsoft account so she can do more (like voicing etc) unfortunately when i click sign in I get a square black empty box just sits there.
I have called dell was told I have to pay $129.00 for them to help me one time only or pay another $200.00 for software warranty.
It's suppose to be included in windows 10 and have had it maybe 3 hours at this point have had it since 9:00 a.m. this morning Haven't done anything just letting it set up.
I'm on my Dell all in one desk top and I bought it also brand new  about little over a year and Cortana works perfectly on it. it was windows 8.1 and i got the free windows 10 download for it.

So if anyone out there can help me as I'm ready to call them tell them send me a return label and skip a lap top all together. I had both miss my lap top this one was on sale got it for $242.00
Also tried Microsoft support tech but nope they say Dell should go good for it.and Dell said the software isn't put in by them not warranted only the hardware.
Thank you in advance

cinnaamon,
Try the various steps below to resolve this issue.
If you just made a new Microsoft account and are having this problem, then you have to verify it with your email.
You can try the information below as well.
1. Type Manage your Accounts in the search bar
2. Click on Your Accounts.
3. Click on Sign in with a local account instead.
4. Enter the Microsoft password if prompted.
5. Follow the on screen instructions to configure Local account.
6. Restart your PC.
7. Follow the same steps and change to Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
8. Sing in to Cortana, Windows store and check.
Here is another option that seem to work for some.
Type User Accounts in your search bar and select "Change User Account Control Settings"- Check your settings---if the lowest option is selected, this is your problem! Change your option to the Windows recommended option (in bold). It should be one option below "Always Notify."- Restart your computer. Upon restart, you should see that Cortana is working. But if she's not, select the Windows store icon in your taskbar.- Click the Sign in option.- Sign in and answer that you'd like to use your Microsoft Account to access the computer. - (Optional) Sign out to make sure changes have saved.- (Optional) Sign back in and all should work (see notes below if you have problems with Cortana).

I discovered recently that Cortana had been corrupted on one of my systems. There was no ?search? function, or anything else. I tried everything I could find on line to fix it, but no joy.

As a last resort I re-installed Windows 10 (latest download). While that solved the Cortana problem, it also introduced a network one that has yet to get resolved.

To solve the (more important) network situation, I reverted to the previous C-drive image and am again without the Cortana service.

Has anyone else had a problem with Cortana, and/or perhaps an idea about how to restore the functionality?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Over the last couple of days I have found Cortana's 'Ask Me Anything' search box will not work. I can type nothing in. From inspection of other people's problems with Cortana it seems the trouble is often associated with Start Menu malfunction. In my case however I have no problem with the start menu.
Can anyone advise me how to overcome this annoying problem?
PS The Windows 10 updates are all installed.

A:Cortana not working.

Suggestions only :

1. You said " Over the last couple of days ". If that is the fact, do a system restore. Pick a date when Cortana was working , or at least a week ago as your restore point.

2. If that does not help. Try this troubleshooting method..............
Run a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......
sfc /scannow

> press Enter.
It will take quite sometime.
When finished, it will give you one of the 3 reports...............(paraphrasing)
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repair successful.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair.

If the report is #1, your solution lies elsewhere.
If the report is #2, check if your problems have been resolved.
If the report is #3, use this method................
In the same Command Prompt (Admin) windows, copy and paste this command...........

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

3. Create another user account with exactly the same privileges > log on to it and see if Cortana will work.

Right now, I can say "Hey, Cortana" and it will hear me and show "listening" with all the letters flying by. But it can't hear my request and then tells me something is wrong. No kidding. Since I still have the ISO of Windows 8.1 on here there are no system restore points. That is what I would do first. Strangely, I have a Dell two in one that came with Windows 10 and I had to fight to get Cortana to work on there too but now it seems stable. I would surely appreciate any tips or fixes. I realize that it is part an parcel tied to the Windows SearchUI mechanics yet if I'm not searching or surfing my OS why would it be using memory and what could it be 'searching' for?

Alas, Cortana is busy. I noticed for the first day or so after installing Windows 10, she ran slowly, was unresponsive, and was generally unavailable.  After she had time to index all my mail, scan my pc for any contraband, and upload my porn to Bill she now responds in a timely fashion.

During the first few days of Windows 10 rollout, the problems were server side, but I believe she is answering all questions now.

Also, turn on Windows Search if you have it disabled.
