Laptop stuck on shut down

Q: Laptop stuck on shut down

Hello. Last night my norton anti virus scan screen wouldn't close down so I stupidly shut down my computer. The computer got stuck at the "logging off" screen. I have left it ther for literally hours and nothing has happened. I trried turning it off manually which works but when I turn it back on I get the screen saying "resuming windows" then it returns to the "logging off" screen. The laptop is a Dell studio 17 and is running windows vista home premium. Please, please, please help me and make it nice and easy lol.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A day ago I left my laptop for 10 mins. Like a normal laptop it fades out and I have to move the mouse to make it come back on. Anyway after this happened I tried going on the Internet but after about 5 mins the Internet freezes and can't recover. When I shut it down it either gets stuck on shut down or log off screen and I have to manually shut it down pressing the button. This has happened before but it fixes itself. This time it hasn't and the Internet won't work and it freezes on the shut down/ log off screen. Help!

Hi,

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium which is stuck on the shutting down screen after I pressed install and shut down computer.

I have left it plugged in so it doesn't run out of battery and shut down.

How do I fix this?

A:My laptop is stuck on shut down screen after installing updates!

Ah, I have exactly the same problem! My Windows 7 Home Premium is an Acer though. You can view my thread for the details of my progress with this problem.

Laptop has been shutting down for 7 hours after update, please help!

Anyway, mine has been stuck for 10 hours total, so I decided to hold down the power button until it's dead. Not a very good idea, but I can't think of any other way. After that, I turned the pc back on. The pc seems to run normally. But then when I shut the pc down again, it decided to install more updates. This is when things get ugly on my part. Sometime during this second shutdown update process, I got a blue screen of death. So yeah, best not follow what I did. But should you decide to hold that power button and then turn the pc back on, I recommend that you set the windows updates settings to "never check for updates" so that when you do a shutdown again, the updates won't install, thus saving your pc from a potential blue screen of death.

Oh yeah, have you ever got a "Failure configuring windows updates. Reverting changes."? I got that at least 2 times already.

I am using Vista Professional/SP2. I'm using a thinkpad T400. Recently, when shutting down my computer, vista just stays at the shutdown screen for hours. I have tried leaving it on for an entire day and it is still stuck on the shutdown screen - i have to force a shutdown everytime. does anybody have any idea why this is happening?

A:Stuck on shut down screen

I've been helping one of my relatives who's computer has the same problem.
It's a desktop running vista SP2 I think, and I can leave it at the shut down screen for hours,
but it won't shutdown.

I'm not at their house much, but it could be a driver issue...

Or virus messing with the drivers, locking stuff down, ect...

I don't really have an answer to you problem,
but I'll post back if I find a way to fix the PC I'm working on.

This is obviously not the first time I've had to wait for my computer to install updates when shutting down. But it has been stuck on update 6 of 20 for the past 30 minutes. Is that normal? I'm a bit nervous about turning the power off while it's busy. I really don't want to have to reformat as the guy who built my PC has the windows disc and I haven't backed up files I want to keep. I'm worried that this turns into something bigger than it should be. Any advice or opinions?
We're expecting to have a power outage not too long from now in our area.

A:Stuck on "Installing update 6 of 20" when attempting to shut down

Is this a desktop or laptop computer?

My wife just had 12 updates which took close to thirty minutes to complete.  This is not unusual.

The concern should be what happens if the power goes out.  If this is a laptop you will have the battery to keep the update going.  If it is a desktop the computer is going shut down without a chance to close what elver files are open at that time.

I have a momitsu cd-rom drive that absolutely will not open unless you leave a cd in the drive.

When I have shut the drive without a cd in place I have had to shut the computer off and use a paper clip to force the drive open , then insert a cd into the tray. Then it will open as long as it is closed with a cd in the tray. (when the computer is on it sucks the drive right back in when I use a paper clip)

Also I have tried to open the drive without a cd in..
it won't open in dos, when I turn the computer on it won't open and it won't open in windows. I even tried the drive just hooked into the power supply with no i/o and it still refuses.

Do you think I can fix this thing? Software/drivers seem to have no effect. I think something must be plain stuck

Thanx

My Notebook Stream 11-r015wm with a Windows 10 operating system (which I have had for less than two months) went into sleep mode while I was away from it. When I returned I was unable to either wake the computer back up or shut it down. The screen is black and the power button is lit up as though it is still in sleep mode but as I've said I cannot get the computer to respond to anything I try. I have ALREADY attempted a hard reset but even after nearly 2 minutes of holding the power button down, it will not shut down. I do recall that it was wanting to update something shortly before this happened. Is there anything I can do to get it to shut down, restart, or wake up, short of sending it in? I need the computer for my studies and only have the weekend to fix this before my classes resume.

Hi

My mum is having a nightmare with her computer. She initially had Vista on it then started getting error messages followed by a blue screen, she took it for repair and the guy also put XP and AVG on it. She previously had Norton on. I have been and set up her internet and email etc and as soon as we went on the internet it froze. We got an error message mentionining avgdump.exe shortly followed by a blue screen saying Windows was shutting down to prevent further damage to your computer - unfortunately the screen only stays on for 2 seconds then the computer reboots displays the blue screen again for 2 seconds then shuts down again and so on. I think the error code was 0x80000008e - as I say its not on long enough to check properly. Any ideas as my polite non swearing mother has now started swearing!

Thanks in anticipation

A:Blue Screen and Windows stuck on shut down loop

On boot up press F8 to get to the startup options screen before windows begins to load. Then go to disable automatic restart on system failure and press enter.

Next time you get a BSOD error, the system wont restart automatically, so you can jot down the error codes and any drivers mentioned.

You can also try to boot in safe mode from this menu to see if you still get the error message.

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit

So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!

I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.

I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.

I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

However if someone can suggest a fix without having to restore that would be great!

Thanks in advance!
Ash

A:Windows Update - Installs Same Updates On Shut Down - 0% Stuck

Ok something new,

I tried some more fixes I found online I tried deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to no avail.

And also ran a program which reinstalled WU and all its .dll's etc.

Now I have a different problem it wont search for updates it says searching then stops and say error "8008005".

Tried disabling AV and FIrewall (Avast, Comodo and MBAM) and ran scans on all of those including SUPERAntiSpyware.

I only have one system restore from around 5 days ago when the updates were just reinstalling and i had no errors.

Should I restore to that or try and fix this error (which i have been looking how to with no luck!)

Thanks

After doing a search for my problem, I still don't know where I should start in trying to find out what is causing the laptop to no longer recharge while in use. I normally use the laptop plugged in, so I may have contributed to this by not having the settings correct. While looking around, I did find the box that says the battery is OK, with a big check. If I am going to need to remove the battery, please include detailed instruction because I have never opened anything in the case. Also, I have seen reference to the BIOS and I will need detailed instruction if I have to check that. Thanks for your help!

I have an HP Probook 4540S.

I don't use it that often and when I put it away, I make sure the battery is at 100%.

Today, I went to use it, and it would not power on.

I plugged in the A/C adapter and it powered up and showed the battery at 0%.

I called HP and they said that is normal and if I'm not going to use it for more than a week, to remove the battery.

I went to the HP forum, and they said just the opposite- The Mod said it has to be a software problem or a crappy battery.

Which is correct and would removing the battery when not using it be okay?

Thanks,

Paul

A:Laptop battery draining when laptop is shut down

Batteries do lose a certain percentage while being shutoff, usually 2-3% but it can be higher. The battery could be completely normal or it could be going bad. Typically this is from heat or poor charging habits (don't worry, everyone does it).

Hi everyone.
2 questions:

1) My windows 7 stuck at "shutting down". Doesn't matter if i'm restarting or shutting down. If i don't touch it, then i get a BSOD after about 10 minutes.

2) every once in a while i have no connection to the internet. If i troubleshoot, windows says there's a problem with my local area connection, but doesn't fix it. Only if i restart, and then troubleshoot, it resets my "local area connection" and everything's fine. I remember in windows xp i would just press "disable" on the local area connection, and the enter again, and it would restart it automatically. But i have no idea how to reset it manually.

Thanks!

Until then work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 to establish a Clean Boot, scan the logs for repeat errors to google, utilize System Resources to find solutions to problems. I would also test my hardware to get that out of the way.

Check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers or hotfixes after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware. If no newer LAN driver is offered then check the device's Support Downloads webpage for newer or another to try.

Hi Everyone!
I've got an issue with my Dell XPS m1730 laptop. For some reason Windows automatically locks up out of a blue and I've got to do a force shut down to unfreeze it. So my laptop did it again last night which meant having to do another force shut down but now it is stuck on the Dell screen. I followed the tutorial here by taking the battery out and holding in the power button in for a few seconds but this solution is no longer working and the loading bar gets to 75% or less and does nothing. I've been told this is a bios issue and I got told to downgrade from A11 to A10 but the problem has not gone away. I am starting to think it is a graphics card issue due to Windows locking but I am not sure. Has anyone got any advice what this could be?

Thanks

-James

hello,

This thing is happening since i install the latest update for windows 7 ultimate. my laptop suddenly off it is like if i just unplugged it. i dont think its because of overheat or problem with my power supply. this is because i open my other os (linux) (same laptop) its operate just like normal. but when i change to windows its suddenly off when its come to windows load ( that square shape-like for windows). now i format everything and change to windows 8. yet the problem still the same. i cant even open my new os. its just off when its comes to load to start windows. this is happening frequently.. i have to press power button more then 20 times.

pardon my english.

regards.

A:laptop just shut/off

Am I understanding you correctly? So, you have a dual boot arrangement and when you use Linux, it works fine but when you try to boot to a clean install of Windows 8, it shuts off immediately? Now, if you are really trying to say that it was working on Linux (previously), and now it does not work on Windows 8, then it could possibly be coincidence or a recently developed hardware issue. Now, if you want additional help, please provide the name and model number of your laptop. Also, do you eventually get into Windows 8 after pressing the power button 20 times?

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire 5613 with Vista.

I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a couple of weeks. It started when I tried to download the latest Windows updates, they downloaded ok but when the install started the laptop hung. I have re-tried this a number of times but always with the same result. I haven't been able to switch off my laptop normally since and I have to force stop it instead.

I tried running my anti-virus and malware scans but they caused it to hang as well. I switched to safe mode and managed to run the scans successfully but nothing untoward was found.

At the moment, I can use the internet and email without any problem but the laptop hangs whenever I try to download anything or open the control panel.

I had some over heating issues recently which caused random shut downs but I gave it a good clean and haven't had any reccurance of the problem since.

Any ideas?

Actually this pc is unable to shut down at all. I click on shut down and it just ignores my request and it stays alive without even doing anything. So yeah i dunno where to look. I took a look at the processes yet they seem quite legit. =) thanks in advance.

This is a tempory solution until somebody posts a fix but try this:

1. Start + R (opens "Run...").
2. Type "cmd" and click "OK".
3. Type on cmd "shutdown".

I have an Acer laptop running XP SP-2
This evening I was having a minor problem with a game so I closed it and then went to "Start" > Turn Off Computer then in the dialog box clicked "Restart".
It got as far as the blue screen that says windows is shutting down the nothing happens. I have pused the on/off switch, done "ctrl+ald+delete" Nothing.
I have also closed the screen and when I open it 5 or 10 minutes later still at the same point in the shut down process.
What would happen if I remove the battery from the unit and remove the AC power??

A:Laptop won't shut down

When you hit "ctrl+ald+delete" were any processes running that you could stop?

You have anti-virus software running on that computer?

Guess you're left with no other choice but to remove the battery. Sometimes a simple restart is all that it takes. You could also try a reset to last known config or system restore to an earlier point in time. Then you should upgrade to SP3.

Hello guys!I've got a problem with my Asus laptop. When I try to shut it down, after a while only the display turns off, while the laptop stays on forever (I can hear the sound of it working and the light which shows the state of the computer is green). It looks as if it were asked to sleep, except that I can't turn it on; all I can do is keep the power button pressed so I turn it off forcedly. This also happened 2 months ago and there's something common between the 2 situations. This error occured right after I performed a clean with CCleaner. I've just uninstalled CCleaner but the problem won't disappear. If you could help me,I'd me very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Have a gateway m-6848 with vista 64. after a year of operating perfectly, it suddenly will not shut down or re-start. Haven't changed anything other than to install norton 360. Should be noted that just prior to this the battery light came on(And stays on) and apparently I'm "not charging". Not real computer savy and would like any input. Thanks Jim
