Notepad, Wordpad, Paint automatically closes whenever save or save as is selected.

Q: Notepad, Wordpad, Paint automatically closes whenever save or save as is selected.

Hi,

I've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install/uninstall/restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.

When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.

I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.

Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

I'd really appreciate your inputs on this matter.
Thanks for all ideas and help ahead!

Preferred Solution: Notepad, Wordpad, Paint automatically closes whenever save or save as is selected.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How did you uninstall/reinstall the programs without the CD? They're part of the system.

I noticed that Notepad and also Wordpad save files differently in Windows 7. Here's what I mean: In the attachment, Notepad includes the file's full pathname when asking "Do you want to save changes...".

Windows XP asked simply "Do you want to save changes to Hello.txt?" without including the full path.

Is this something new in Windows 7?

A:Notepad (and Wordpad) Save Files Differently

Hello,

Welcome to 7 forums.

Please be advised that both the above indications are same. In windows 7, it seems that they wanted to make the information about the file extension to be more clear to the user when we save it. There is nothing new other than the file extension is shown

I first noticed this when I wanted to take a screenshot and i realised that paint was not on the list to use the program and it disappeared from my start menu, even system sound i could not find it in the list, also the system games, notepad, wordpad, messenger (the old msn one). The software I have installed is fine, computer is fine from viruses as well, it's just the microsoft system programs disappeared. (Office 2003 and 2007 is fine)

Also my Messenger refuse to sign in onto my account, using Yahoo was fine, tried signing it in (msn account) with trillion, won't work, but it did work when I logged into messenger via internet browser!

Live Messenger:

wlcomm.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x7c809e3a" referenced memory at "0x9e037275". The memory could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program..

I don't want to restore from a previous point because I don't know exactly the date the problem occurred, so I probably restore on a wrong date and lose what I have/bring back some uninstalled games I got rid of. I tried going into Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows Components > Accessories and Utilities but I don't have the windows discs it ask me, because I had my computer formatted from a local computer store.

Anyone know what is the problem? Tried google but didn't help with my specific problems. Would be nice if anyone could really help me! Thank you.

A:Paint, Wordpad, Notepad, system sound disappeared

Some information on wlcomm.exe: Re: Beta Windows Live Messenger 9.0:
There is a potentially annoying new annoying system process though - wlcomm.exe that runs in the background.

"This is supposed to sign you into Windows Live Messenger faster and keep your contacts up-to-date across all Windows Live services. We're simply not fans of needing extra processes to do this kind of stuff - it's yet another reason for Windows to run more sluggishly."

Are you running the Beta version?

As for the missing Accessories, Do a search in Files & Folders for Accessories> right click on each you want on Start menu> click on 'pin to Start menu'.

I don't think the two problems are related. However, when experiencing an unexplained change on a system, it is always best to scan with the security programs: one antivirus, at least 2 spyware/adware programs, updating each right before the scan.

PSP9 is driving me nuts ... it saves files (jpeg in jpeg out) most of the time fine but for some reason it gets antsy and just 'doesn't' save the file ... the dialogue bar at the bottom of the window flashes progress but doesn't write the file at all.

If you save the file > saveas and call it a different filename it says that it's saved but the 'new' file is zero bytes in size!!

It will save .psp or .psd or etc etc no problems.. just seems to be jpg's.

Any idea's on this would be really appreciated as this is really annoying.

cheers!

Today as I was editing a php file using Notepad, when I saved the file, all of the carriage returns disappeared. They disappeared in the saved file as well as on screen.

I have an unedited version of the file and I repeated this several times, trying various things (i.e. saving with different encodings, saving with a .txt extension, etc) and every time the carriage returns are stripped. This wasn't happening before since I was previously able to save the file with no problems.

I tried the same thing with Wordpad, and it doesn't even load the carriage returns - they are stripped out right away. Notepad at least loads the file ok.

Using MS Word works fine, but that is overkill to edit an ASCII file. I'd rather not use it.

If I create a textfile with notepad and enter a few lines, then it saves it with no problem. Other files also save fine.

This appears to be a problem with Vista since both Notepad and Wordpad are affected. Has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas on how to solve it? Is it possible that something in the contents of the file is flagging Windows to strip out the CR's?

A:Notepad and Wordpad are stripping carriage returns automatically

Ok. I fixed the problem with a little visual basic...

For some reason, notepad had previously save the file so that the first line break in the file saved as CR CR LF CR CR LF, and this was confusing notepad and wordpad. I ran the file through some code to make sure all line breaks were CR LF's and the file now saves fine.

Weird.

I love the new look of WordPad, they finally made the program look like it's for a current generation PC. A big problem to me, though, is that I have to manually change the line spacing and check off the 'add 10pt spacing after paragraphs' EVERY single time I open up the program. I don't like this at all, Word keeps your paragraph settings - even the old WordPad did right? Is there a way to keep my paragraph settings saved so when I open it up I don't have to do all of that every time?

A:Why don't settings save in WordPad?

Even after intensive examination I could not find any default settings. I guess they did not want it to compete with Word.

Greetings one and all!

I just read your new post here concerning the rules, and I have a problem finding any thread having to do with the questions I have. I am sorry. I know it is wasting your time to repeat q&a's and I do apologize, I just can't seem to find the originals.

In the meantime, you are all wonderful, and I can't thank you enough for caring to share your amazing wealth of knowledge in a bounty of interests and questions. I truly do appreciate each of you and again, thank you for your kindness!
That said, I (again) am not sure where to post this question, but hoping I at least get the section correct.

I do not have M.S. Word or Office, but equipped with my H.P. lappy came Microsoft Works. I don't care for it very much and have used Wordpad for all my computing years, which I like very much. After playing way with the M.S. Works, I finally was able to change the font color, but even that setting took me much too long to find. Anyway, when I just jot down notes or letters or any text document, no matter where I tell it to 'save as', when I open it again, there it is in Works again, not Wordpad. I'm sure most of you enjoy the depths of Office and even Works, but I just need a simple program like Wordpad and I was wondering how to stop saving in Works instead of Wordpad. I've spent way too much time already trying to figure it out, since I'm sure it's a simple click here instead of click there, and am hoping one of you knowledgeable dears wil... Read more

A:Save as/in Wordpad, not Works

Hi Grammy welcome once again to Vista Forum.
I think I know what you mean & what you would like to achieve.
So will have a go & see if I can get it right? If not slap my wrist & send me to bed early without cookies!

This is done through vista premium as yourself, except I deleted Microsoft Works & have Microsoft Word.
So therefore without me having Works it may indeed not Work!
I enclosed some screenshots of what I did to try & get it to work for you. Assuming that My Word would react in the same way as your Works. Phew! With me so far?

Once a file has been created in WorPad & Save in/as ...Documents
I found that if I go direct into Documents to Open that file, it opened in Word. (Maybe your equivalent Works)
No good right?

But if I opened WordPad. File >> Open >> Documents >> Click File >> opened in WordPad NOT Word (Works)
It worked for me, so I think, I hope, that was what you were wanting?

Hope it works ok.

Apologies screenshots seem to have gone walkabouts, will try & find & re-post

When typing 2 brief but very important reports the save feature for Wordpad replaced the first saved file with the second without any prompt to replace existing file. Saved to disk. Using wordpad in Windows 95. Is there any way to retrieve the first report before the modifications in the second? I already looked under documents and it is replaced there too.

A:Wordpad save error

That's not an error, that's by design. Word is the same. It won't prompt you when you save over an old version. Personally, I don't like it, but that's the way it works. As to getting your original file back, you need a utility that will unerase, but the longer you work on your computer, the less chance you will have of unerasing. It's probably more work than it's worth. If its not a lot you lost, I'd just re-do it.

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

Is there a program that will save text in wordpad as i make changes.

i lost a page when my computer froze before i saved the data...

thanks

A:Solved: Wordpad realtime save

Nothing that I am aware of, as that would mean a save every keystroke which would seriously interfere with the operation of the program.

Wordpad is a very basic default text editor, you need a better one that supports "autosave", which would at least allow a backup to be reurrected (not of the very latest at any crash, but you can set the save period as a minute or so). Microsoft Word has the autosave feature, OpenOffice (free) may have as well.

But you should be putting the effort into diagnosing and fixing the cause of the crashes/ freezes if it is a recurrent problem rather than living with them, it is not normal.

This is the same way I did it orginally. I then was getting BSOD from my external hdd, when transfering large files. Now I realised that I still get a BSOD when I am using Paint and I click on Save. It has also happened when just double clicking on a jpg file to view it.

Any help would be appreciated as I use this computer as my main work station and need to be editing files using paint, and viewing them etc.

Hi
I took a screen shot of my desktop and pasted it in ms paint. Now when I wanted to save it, it gave me the following error.

Paint cannot save this file.
Save was interrupted, so your for has not been saved.

Earlier I have had no such issue. I have always taken screen shots and saved them in jgp format through ms paint.
And i am using the same drivers and screen resolution from day 1.

I have not installed any software or hardware in the near future. That i could suspect of causing this issue.

The only instance I don't get this error is of i save it as bmp.
I have done Sfc /scannow
And found no issue.
My screen resolution is [email protected] on 17 inch crt monitor.
Why?

What Antivirus software are you using?
Your system specs list "non".
Did you mean "none"?
(as in: you do not have any antivirus tool installed)

You might want to watch what happens during the file save using Process Monitor.

Hello. I wondered if anyone else has this problem and knows how to fix it.

I use tab to indent text sometimes in WordPad. I will save it and then when I reload it later the text will be a mess/out of place. What I think it does is push text from the previous line onto the next line.

I will post a reproduced example in paint.

System spec.:
Processor: Intel Core i5-3570k 3.4GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8GB
System type 64-bit Operating System(windows 7 Home premium)
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
Primary hard drive(windows): Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series
Secondary hard drive: Seagate 1TB(st1000dm003-1ch162)
Optical drive: LG super multi dvd-RW(HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS95 ATA Device)
Motherboard: Z77A-GD65 Gaming(MSI)
Sound: Sound Blaster Z

A:Wordpad pushes text onto next line after save when using tab to indent

Have you tried using the Indent increase/decrease buttons instead? Also for something free that may be a bit more versatile take a look at Atlantis Nova

Most editors have a setting to use hard tabs or substitute spaces. That usually avoids these kind of problems. But I did not see that setting in WP. Then again I don't use it that often since it went to the Ribbon based Gui.

Recently my little Notepad has been broken. I'm not sure when it started happening, but every time I try to use it, this happens: Broken notepad.png

If I click on Notepad it starts to say it's not responding. The only way I can exit it out is via task manager, or making the 'Notepad is not responding, do you want to..' window come up and end it that way.
What is this problem and how can I fix it? I didn't think something like NOTEPAD could even do this |3

I've been searching high and low and checking the windows registry but I can't seem to find a way to change the default save file type in Paint. It comes up with BMP as the default but I want JPG to be the default whenever I do a save/save as, so I don't have to change it all the time. Any suggestions?

A:MS Paint default file save type

Here is a work around.

Try this to see if it works for you.

1. Open a blank screen in Paint and save it as a .jpg in the location you want as your default with the name "default.jpg".
2. Right click and drag the Paint program from the Start, Programs,
Accessories location onto the desktop and select copy here.
3. Right click on the Paint icon and then left click Properties. You should see a line like this "%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe" (without the quotes.)
4. Place the cursor after the .exe and type a space.
5. Type the full path and filename for the default.jpg file you saved (if there is any spaces in the path you need to enclose anything you type in quotes. The final line should look like this

%SystemRoot%\system32\mspaint.exe "C:\this is the path here\default.jpg"

6.click OK.

Double click on the new desktop icon, the file will open and the Save As default location will be where the file is located. If you make the default.jpg read only, you won't inadvertently change the file and a Save As will then pop up for any attempt to Save.

I don't think that's impossible to recover, because based on my experienced a screenshot (using keyboard) will just temporarily copy the image from your clipboard which you need to paste right-away. You may use third-party application for screen capturing that would automatically saved your snapshots on a specified directory.

When you press print screen for a screenshot

If anyone can help plsss?

On notepad by mistake i saved changes instead of cancel , dont save & lost my existing notes.

Does anyone know if i can get this back and how?

Any help would be appriciated

A:Notepad ..do you want to save changes? Saved changes by mistake...

Welcome to Seven Forums Sara11.
I misunderstand, you did or did not click Save Changes?

You can try Right-clicking an empty place on your desktop and see if there is an "Undo" option listed.

Also open notepad and click the floppy icon in the upper left, it should show you recently opened documents, if the one you want is there, click it and it will reopen.

I have been learning HTML/CSS and use Notepad as my editor.  Tonight I tried to SAVE AS (html file) and got an error message:

Location is not available.  C\Users\XXXX|Documents\XXXX\A-file-name refers to a location that is unavailable..."  Ir's a file that I deleted.  Notepad won't let me access anything else and this msg comes up each time I try to save or save as.  Is there a way to fix this?

Hey all, thanks ahead of time for taking a look!

I've had this problem with Adobe Photoshop Extended (CS4 Version 11.0) and Microsoft Paint for about a month now. Anytime I try to "save" or "save as" with either of these programs, Vista produces the "[Photoshop or Paint] has stopped working - Windows is checking for a solution" error. It then, after maybe 15 seconds or so, says "[Photoshop or Paint] has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

This happens when I try to save ANYTHING on either of these programs, but it is restricted to only these two programs. Everything else, including all Microsoft Office software and even irfanview, which is another image editing software, work flawlessly. I do not believe that I downloaded any software prior to this problem. I've searched all over the internet for a solution but I can only find people having trouble saving as JPGs, but I cannot save at all with these programs, normally I can find someone who has solved the same problem and I follow their steps but this has absolutely stumped me. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!

I know that some of these have no correlation to the actual issue, but I figured it's worth a shot. Here's all that I've tried to fix it -
-Reinstalled Photoshop
-Complete System Virus Scan via ESET NOD32 4.0.437.0

A:[SOLVED] Cannot Save in Photoshop or Paint (Has Stopped Working)

You have Avast & ESET both installed?

Remove Avast using Removal Tool --> http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Re-boot upon completion.

Update ESET NOD32 installation to v4.2.40.0 --> http://www.eset.com/download

Re-boot.

Test Photoshop, Paint, Word, others again.

A few weeks ago I changed the file association for .html files to open with Notepad (instead of IE) and since then I have noticed that often when I perform a Save As action in Notepad (on an .html file) and then press the Enter key (as opposed to the Save button) Notepad "stops working" and generates the following message:

Note that I used a program called Default Programs Editor to make the change. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a way to reinstall Notepad independently? In every other way Notepad works fine.

PS: As for the reason I used a third party app to change the default program, I tried to do it "normally" but it wasn't sticking. But I realized after that the reason it wasn't sticking is because that change somehow prompted IE to think it wasn't the default browser, and when the message came out asking me if I wanted to make IE the default browser, it undid the file association to Notepad. I only realized this after the ... Read more

Hello HandsomeP,

You might see if downloading and merging the HTML option in the tutorial below may be able to help by restoring the default associations for .html files.

Hi All

I Want A way to Make notepad Save File Automatically As Unicode ?

How ?

Thanks

A:How to Make Notepad Save Txt Files As unicode?

The first time you save a file with Notepad, you can choose which encoding to use. Subsequently, modifying and re-saving that file will use the encoding that you have chosen for that file. New files will, of course, allow you to choose the encoding.

Referring to your image, the encoding method is in alphabetical order, which is why ANSI is the default.

I have been using MSWorks for years and have a fairly large database that will not let me save changes. When I Ctrl+S, select save from the menu or click the save icon the file will simple close. When i re-open it no changes have been saved.

I occasionally save this file to one of 3 backup versions. One of the backups was also inflicted with this problem. I was able to open the original and a different backup then copy and paste all updates since the last save, then save the backup sucsessfully. I then closed the origingal and the did a "save as" from the backup to the origingal file name.

Problem recovered from but issue not resolved. This is not the first time this has happened to me running MSWorks.

The issue has occured on this file and one other file and is a rare occurance but frustrating. Other MSWorks files do not have the problem at the same time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Whenever I save anything in Vista's Notepad, a save history is created. I want to delete that history so that is does not show up when making future saves.

To examine: Open Notepad
Select "File"
Select "Save As"
Change "Save As Type" to "All Files"
Select Down Arrow in File Name Block

You will now see the history of previous saves. How can I delete them?

Hi, I am sorry if this is a very frivolous request. But it is more for convenience why I am asking this as it does get somewhat annoying.

But when I chose "save as" for a notepad .txt document I have been writing all the time the option automatically comes up as

*.txt

I then have to type in the name of the document I wish to save it as. However what I was wondering, or more hoping, if there are actually any tweaks or registry changes I can make so when I click 'save as' in notepad. The notepad 'save as' screen automatically pops up and assigns the first line of text inside the .txt file I have just typed as the possible name of the document to save.

This is similar to how Microsoft Office uses the 'save as' option, and for time saving and convenience I was hoping someone may know if there was possibly a way to set Notepad to do this automatically too.

Thanks
Anthony

A:Change how Notepad Saves Document Names using 'Save As'.?

Hi Anthony1uk,
Unfortunately such a thing wouldn't be possible without a rewrite of the Notepad application itself.

In the Spanish version of Paint Ctrl+G is shown to be a shortcut for Save, and Ctrl+D a shortcut to show/hide the grid. However, Ctrl+G shows/hides the grid and Ctrl+D does nothing. There is no shortcut for Save. Ctrl+S does nothing either (it's shortcut for Save in English versions of most programs).

A:Save and Grid keyboard shortcuts overlap in Spanish version of Paint

I agree with Sanmartin, we have the same result while using the Spanish display. Gabrielmaldi, if your Windows 7 is Spanish version, this issue should be a bug. Since we have no trouble in the English display, if you can install the English MUI, you can switch to English display to avoiding this issue. I hope this can help you.John

In Word 2013 I am hooked on event DocumentBeforeSave. When user wants to save document, backstage view is displayed with possible locations and also recent folders. After user selected one of recent folders, event DocumentBeforeSave is triggered. Where is the information about selected path stored? I need to display Save dialog(Dialogs[WdWordDialog.wdDialogFileSaveAs]) directly in this event, but first I need to know which path user selected. Otherwise default path is selected and it could be counfusing for the user.

Well, if autosave was on, try going here to look for any autosave files:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\

Of check your word settings for save and check where your current auto save flder is set too...
