Ports not found when trying to install printer! HELP...

Q: Ports not found when trying to install printer! HELP...

I am working on windows 2000. I had a Deskjet 895Cse installed and working. It was connected by USB. I bought a HP Officejet 6310xi all in one. My 895Cse was still working last night, but had trouble trying to get the printer working on the new officejet. I have been working all day with no luck on fixing. I need some desperate help. It doesn't have any printers in my print folder now, and when ever I try to install the driver for the Deskjet that I had, it keeps coming up with an error of "NO PORTS FOUND", yet, when I click on properties of the Printer Port, it says it is working. I have tried deleting and restarting. I have tried everything I could think of, even going to a parallel port for the old printer and USB for the new, thinking that they just didn't like each other being on the USB at the same time. I'm still getting the same message. I can't get either printer to work. The copier works on the new one, but other than that if I go to print something from computer, cannot do. Does anyone out there no what I can do? I even went into the registry, and made sure all of the old software was gone before reinstalling. It is also telling me I haven't got enough resources. I have 74.5 GB free on the computer, working with a Pentium 4 that has 2.53 Ghz. Please.........can someone tell me how to fix this without me having to trash my computer. I have so much stuff that I can't get rid of, and need my printer desperately. Thanks, and hope to hear from one of you soon. Going to dinner soon, but will check when I get back if no answers before then. What an anniversary present. Working on this blasted thing all day without any luck of fixing the problem. I thought it was time I came for help.

Preferred Solution: Ports not found when trying to install printer! HELP...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I had a similar problem installing a HP 4215 on a computer that had a epson printer already installed...the fix after doing battle with it was to uninstall the epson printer completely including drivers...install the HP and update the drivers right away...and after making sure that it was working right then reinstall the Epson...then all was well..I wont buy or recommend any HP printer ever again...the crap they put on your computer about 600 MGB if I remember right...anyway might give it a try

Simple way to solution, hopefully works on other laptops or desktops....
Go to Device Manager , Universal Serial Bus Controllers , then for each Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller, simply right click and uninstall device... You will see all other devices listed under that main tab disappear. Then using touchpad, since USB mouse will not be working, simply do a restart, not shutdown. When comes up, Windows will detect all ports and install all drivers needed, even though they may have been showing under properties as having no issues and working normally, prior to your uninstall...
I have had ports fail again, usually after a Windows update or after a shutdown, rather than restart or coming out of sleep or hibernation, but just revisit the truck above and you should have them back again....
Dell diagnostics failed to see anything amiss at all, quite disappointing.. Then found this simple solution. Hope works for all encountering similar problem..ciao

Here I go again. I asked this before and the problem was solved. However I installed a new and upgraded mobo and cpu. The printer will not install now. For general safety I reinstalled W10 and all my programs. I downloaded and ran the Brother drivers setup.exe. All I get is "machine not found". This is so even though after running setup.exe the Brother mfc-j895dw printer appears in Devices and Printers each time I attempt the install though I remove that device each time. I even tried the previously failed cd install just in case but it still fails. Setup.exe runs and decompresses all the files into a folder Install which contains setup.exe. I deleted that folder and the driver download and tried running setup several times to no avail. I deleted the downloaded file, the Install folder, and the printer from Devices and Printers before attempting each reinstall. I disconnect the Brother from everything before starting setup and only reconnect it when installation says to reconnect. I also set the printer as the default printer each time to no avail.

After having setup successfully Win 7 Pro some years ago printing worked fine for several pdf printers
and connected USB laser printers.

Then, recently, I must have changed something accidentially in System.

When I now want to print (e.g. a Word doc or web page from Firefox) it doesn't work anymore.

EVERY printer does not work!

Further investigations revealed that the printer ports are vanished in printer Proprties dialogs.
Its completely empty!

Have a look at the attached snapshot.

I don't know which event or action caused the printer port deletion.
Maybe a new Win Patch or an uninstallation of driver or a registry key adding.

However re-installation of printer drivers does not help since the required underlying ports are gone.

How can I re-install them again?

Is there a manual Registry add script?

I was setting up some printers on a computer that were connected to the network.

Add a Printer > Local Printer (uncheck the box immediately below) > Create a Port: Standard TCP/IP Port

That's just how we do it. When I set up the ports, however, I did it wrong. Instead of 10.10.1.10, I created a port on 10.10.10.1 which leaves me with more ports than printers. Can't find the setting that lets me go in there and delete the ports.

I *can* go into a printer's properties, select the port with a checkbox, and delete the port. But that also deletes (and makes me reinstall) the printer. What's the trick to getting just these ports deleted from my machine?

A:USB ports not found

I've split your post from the other issue, since we try to deal with problems one at a time, less confusion.

Give the tried-n-true USB rain-dance a try.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Hello guys...

A friend of mine performed a portscan to my computer using my IP address.
The log file showed that i have many ports open and most of them are occupied from unknown (things?)
My friend said that i probably have a trojan (or more than one) running around....
I scanned with Mcafee 8.1 and found nothing....I also have zonealarm firewall...
Does anybody knows any legitimate trojan scanner(that removes them also)
for downloading? Also are there any better firewall programs that i can use?
Furthermore after (or if) i clean my pc how can i close these ports manually?
I also have the log file from the portscanning for anyone that thinks can help me (but i am not sure it would be wise to post it in a common view)

Thanks in advance.

I ran a ShieldsUP firewall test (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) and it said that all my ports are stealthed.
However, I ran the PC Flank port scanner (PC Flank: Make sure you're protected on all sides.) and it said "The test found visible port(s) on your system: 139"
The problem is, it doesn't tell me which ports they are, and I can't find any link to a detailed results page. Does anyone know how I can find out? 139 is a lot of ports to be visible, especially when the GRC test says it's all stealthed...

A:Visible ports found?

I don't believe that 139 means there are 139 ports, rather it is the port 139. This is nothing to actually be concerned about. A lot of times ISP have their own firewalls before you, which would block ports like 139 which is not used for legitimate purpose on the web.

Here is my advice. Don't concern yourself with scare-tactic web sites. Put your network behind a router.

Hey,

I can't seem to find the printer ports preferences. I tried installing a printer on the network, but did it with the wrong driver, so I uninstalled the printer. When I tried to reinstall it again with a different driver, it says that the port name is already in use.

Now, I'm aware that there's a way to view the printer ports and install a printer using one of them, but I can't find that anywhere. It was possible in Vista, too, I believe.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi guys,

Got a little issue that comes up every now and then to do with printer ports.

This is a problem that only appears every so often but is becoming a pain and I don't know the reason for it and cannot get a permanent fix it.

Our printers are networked, all our printers are Dell model numbers (1710, 3000cn, 5330dn). This is not specific to a printer, if the ports arn't showing on one, they don't show on any.

I believe this problem has only happened on windows 7 PC's, both PC's of different models and Specs so nothing in common with the hardware.

There is a way of fixing the problem but it isn't permanent and just happens again. The fix is the good old stoping and starting the spooler.

Is there a way to stop this from happening i without having to do this to the spooler every time it happens?

Thanks,

Mat

A:Printer ports

Hi,

When you restart the spooler service, is it showing as started/running in services.msc, or is it stopped?

Also, if you enter the service properties and go to the recovery tab, try changing the "subsequent failures" field to restart the service and see if the issue persists beyond then.

Let us know what you find.

Not sure what is going on, but 75% of the time when a user logs into any of our machines that have Windows 7 the ports disappear and they can't print. The spooler is running. If I restart it, it seems to fix it, or reboot sometimes it will fix it. I have been fighting this for over 2 months and can't figure it out.

I have loaded the latest drivers I can get for the printers. I also turned off the Print services under Windows features. I adjusted the Print and Point info in gpedit.msc. What else am I missing here? This is causing major issues at my work that people are starting to get frustrated. There has to be a fix for this. Any ideas?

These printers are mapped on a Win2003 server to the network and only these Windows 7 systems have this issue.

This morning I removed the drivers from the script and server, reinstalled newer drivers and generic ones that work for HP and Samsung with Win7, and still have the same issue. The Ports on the printers that are listed with all the IPs disappear. Print Spooler still is running and the printers are still listed.

A:Printer Ports keep disappearing!

just a shot in the dark because I haven't personally experienced this particular problem. But perhaps, the spool service is starting before certain network resources become available and as a consequence the network printers are not available in a timely manner. You might try on one of the Win7 machines checking how the network services are starting and or perhaps adjust the print spool service to a delayed start. Again just a shot in the dark

SOLVED: USB ports not working after mobo driver install (fresh xp install)

Hello all, long time browser first poster...

Anyways, I had to do a fresh install of XP after some nasty spyware/keloggers found their way onto my system.

Everything works fine until after i install the motherboard drivers.
motherboard: EVGA nforce 680i SLI

after the PC reboots I am still able to access the BIOS screen wth the keyboard, and my mouse lights are on. As soon as windows XP (home) loads, the lights on my mouse turn off, and both the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive.

I have tried several things. First, i verified that USB support was enabled in the BIOS. I then tried another fresh install (easy beacuse i partitioned 12g just for the install, so i could just re-format if anything like this ever happened) and installed the current drivers for the mouse and keyboard first (logitech g5 laser mouse and g15 keyboard). Then i installed the mobo drivers..... same results.

I tried the other way around as well, but to no avail. I am completely stumped as to why the darn drivers that came with the mobo won't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

EDIT: the old-school (ps/2, ps/3?) keyboard/mouse ports aren't working either

A:USB ports not working after mobo driver install (fresh xp install)

Is the reason the keyboard and mouse are not working is because they are USB?

Were the chipset drivers installed from a disk that came with the motherboard, or from downloads...
When you to to Device Drivers withing Hardware in System on the Control panel, do you see yellow or red flags by the long USB set or any other drivers on the list?
We assume your system worked OK until this re-install of Windows?
Are you sure you have the partitions configured properly so that the drives are being installed to the main partition rather than the other partition... and how do you know?
We suspect the problem has to do with those partitions and they way you have set them up.

Hi,
I tried to install my schools printer software on my laptop (http://ruwireless.rutgers.edu/?page=printwin) which is made by Pharos. The first time I tried to install it, it failed, I forget there, but I removed the install following this guide http://pharos.custhelp.com/app/answe...opup-client%3F . After that I tried turning off my virus scan (avast free) and firewall (zone alarm free) and tried running it as admin. Now it stops when its trying to install a print driver (I will attach a jpg of the error and the file it lists).
I went to try to manually add the driver myself and noticed there was no ports listed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255507 relates to my problem but that isn't for windows 7 and I'm not sure how much has changed between Windows 2000 and 7.
I'm not sure if the ports were ever there, I haven't set up a printer at home so I don't know if this problem has existed since I installed 7 or if the problem from the first time I tried to install the print manager messed something else up.
I did install spybot and did a registration back up then, but that was before I installed some other programs and I would have to fix a few things if I went back to that back up.

I have Windows 7 Pro 32 bit on a toshiba a215-s7462. I installed all \drivers already for the laptop (most from Toshiba's website) and did all the windows updates.

Thank you

She has an older printer (HP 1102 laserjet) that she tried plugging into her carbon via USB, but will not print. going into printer settings and running the troubleshooter, it states that this is not a USB3.0 device and might not be supported. my understanding is that USB3.0 should be backwards compatible. is there something that must be enabled (such as a legacy mode) to allow her to use her printer? what else could be causing the issue?

I have over 600 desktops and 30+ networked printers. I need to build a database of the network printer port ip's on each computer. I had 'help' in setting up the printers and some computers are set to the wrong port ip.
I want to do this via login script. I am familiar with but not expert on batch files, logon scripts, vb script, wmi, etc. I have searched the scripting sites and tried many suggested methods, but none do completely what I want. The closest is a batch file from Rob Vanderwold. It enumerates the printers and drivers, but I cannot get it to enumerate ports.
Has anyone written or found a batch file or vb script that will enumerate installed/configured printers across the network including the printer port IP?

You could run nmap or any other port scanning utility to find out what ports are open on each piece of hardware on your network.

Hell,

I have several printers at work all hooked up to a samba share so that the whole office can use them. We have Konica Minolta, HP and Lexmarks predominantly but some other brands as well like Kyocera.
I have a fresh Win 8.1 Pro install and i have installed the printer drivers via the Windows update mechanism for all the printers. Some i've added via the samba share some via direct ip connection.
For whatever reason i cannot add/delete or config any of the printer ports as seen in the attached screen cap.
I've even tried the windows Administrator account to no avail. UAC is off and i have admin rights to the pc.

I have sought support on freenode's #windows channel and googled the hell out of this topic, to avail.

I cannot replicate the issue in Win 7.

A:Cannot Add/Delete or Configure printer ports

You seem to have a couple of extra tabs on your picture I do not. Namely the Configure and Settings tabs. It might be the driver for that printer.

Have you checked the Security tab and made sure you were allowed?

Do all the printers behave the same?

I am not familiar with the operation of a Samba share, so there may be something related to that causing the problem.

DH's Dell Inspiron 8600 w/Windows XP Home, SP2. Nod32, Sygate personal firewall, microsoft antispyware, blah blah blah

He travels w/this laptop a pretty good bit and for SOME STRANGE reason picked up network printers when he would be at a hotel or business where he logged on the net. Yes, I know the risks here and try to run regular scans to kill infections - which there have been none SO FAR.

Over the past few weeks, He INTENTIONALLY installed a couple of new printers for good reason. One of them was an HP that had a bunch of bloatware for scanning and crap the he didn't need/use. It took a couple of hours to uninstall this garbage and get his system cleared of it. This got a good "spring cleaning" going on the system.

Deleted ALL printers and was preparing to install only the ones he uses.

1st printer is here at home. It is an HP PSC on a Linksys print server, via Linksys wireless router. I incorrectly assumed that I would have to create the IP port again. Error message said that IP port was already in use. Well, lo and behold , ALL THOSE DELETED PRINTERS' PORTS ARE STILL THERE.

I would prefer that they all go away and install only the printers he uses on a regular basis.

printer #2 is at his office and is similarly an IP port printer. Linksys wireless router, Linksys wire... Read more

A:delete printer ports no longer used

Why do you really need to delete these. They are merely settings for the printer and look at it this way, the ports are already set up if you want to use those printers again. But they really are not using recources so there is no need to delete them. But if you do, you would highlight the port in the port selection screen by going to control panel-printers and whatever it says- right-click the printer- then highlight the port you want in the ports tab and click delete port.

When using remote desktop to a select number of PC's, the local printer ports (TSXXX) are not being redirected to the remote computer.
PC's are all Windows 7. There is no error message. The printers just don't show up, and when you go to manually add them, the local ports do not show up.
Any help would be appreciated!

Windows 7 64bit; I have created, in error, one TCP/IP Printer Port which I would like to delete to keep the Ports clean of rubish, but I am unable to find how to do so.Can anyone help?Nevio

A:How to delete unwanted TCP/IP Printer Ports

Ok, then we have a problem! But as we know all problems can be fixed :)Start regedit.exe and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\Control\Print\Monitors\Standard TCP/IP Ports and remove the entire key (folder) with the name of the port you are deleting. You might have to restart the Print Spooler service after deleting that key to see the change go through. As always when working with the registry be careful and to be on the safe side create a System Restore Point before doing the edit.

Hello,

I have an Epson color 580 printer from like 15 years ago. Worked great with XP. When I tried to print with W8.1, it directed me to save the file as an .xps or something. I couldn't get the .xps to print. I did some reasearch and people said to disable the windows .xps viewer or whatever it's called in controll panel and make my printer the primary printing device. I disabled and removed the default .xps viewer and the fax under the printers section which automatically moved my printer ('USB Printer') up from 'secondary' to 'primary' but it still wouldn't print. Then I realized I didn't install the printer driver. I put the driver CD in but nothing at all happened. I went to Epson's site and downloaded the XP driver because it was the latest version. It gave an error after installing but I restarted and tried to print anyway. When I tried to print, it said 'no printers were set up' and asked to 'install one?' so I hit yes, but it found the printer on someone else's computer in another room of this house and I thought I wasn't on any sort of network/workgroup sharing and I don't want to be. I had 'find printer and devices on network..." set to OFF in settings. I have eveything that I can see in settings set to not be on the Workgroup/Network sharing. I tried "The printer that I want isn't here" but that didn't work. With XP, when I used to format, it would show me the name(s) of the workgroups during the format, and I would never join what was default ... Read more

Hi there. I bought a new wireles printer (HP B100) and it went offline. Cannot get it to print wirelessly. Ran all the tests as instructed by HP in a 1 hour conversation with HP technical support. They have told me to the following (below) but they won't tell me how to do it, saying they are not trained. I also installed the drivers via the CD and attached the printer via a USB cable, and it worked, but when I tried to set up the wireless again it again said something about MAC filtering. Here is the email HP sent me after the phonecall:

Please call you ISP ( internet service provider ) and get the following changes made:
On your network configuration page you should have a MAC filtering address you need to ask your ISP to get this address on to your router exception list.
Also get the following ports opened:
the printer ports to open are:
UDP 427 inbound,
UDP 427 outbound,
UDP 161 outbound,
UDP 139 outbound,
TCP 9220 outbound,
TCP 9220 inbound,
TCP 9500 outbound,
TCP 9290 outbound
UDP 137 inbound
UDP 137 outbound

I rang the ISP but they are not willing to help.
I rang netgear, the manufacturer of the router but it is too old (2005) for free product support.
I can get into the netgear router setup page via by ip address (192.168.0.1) but I do not know what to do once there. Is this how I would do it and if not, how? The printer icon is within printers and there is a ports tab if I right click there too. I also have the MAC hardware address on the network configurati... Read more

On a brand new machine with a first-time install of Vista Business x64…this wasn't happening the first day I installed Vista. I could run the printer wizard and connect to the printer fine, I just didn't find the correct driver until the next day.

Now I'm having a problem with connecting to a shared printer (on a 2003SP2 server) and all of the typical printer ports are "missing". I've searched the forum and have already updated the registry with the appropriate TCP/IP key that was exported from an XP machine. This doesn't seem to have worked as I only have one option when creating a new port (Adobe PDF).

Running the add a printer wizard-->network printer, finds the shared printers, but I get a message saying that Vista "can not connect to the printer, make sure that the printer is on and connected to the server…"; however, I still have access to shared drives on the same server. Browsing to the server through "network" I've noticed that the shared printers don't show up in the printers folder, only in the base server folder (they seem to be shared drives??)--checking on the actual server, I noticed that the folder that they exist in is called "printers and faxes" whereas Vista seems to be looking for "Printers"; could this be an issue?

I can ping the IP address of the printer and set it up if I enable the LPR Port monitor--this isn't a good option because we run print tracking software (which was installed th... Read more

A:Missing Ports, can't connect to shared printer

I've got the ports back--I turned on my machine today and immediately uninstalled the print tracking software, then I checked print management and all the ports I would expect are there. Either something miraculous happened overnight with the machine off or the print tracking software was interfering; will have to check with our service provider for an updated version or any known issues with the software.

I have a Vista Ultimate SP 1 OS on my Dell XPX 1530 laptop.

I have a number of drivers that work on my HP 1200 series LaserJet printer.

All of the drivers are set up to print from all three ports and are enabled for pooled printing.

I have discovered that if the printer cable is connected to USB 1, then no matter the order of the print command (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc), whatever document is to be printed, it will print.

But, if the printer cable is connected to USB 2, then only the 2nd and subsequent print commands will go to the USB 2 port. If I unplug the printer cable from USB 2 and plug it into USB 1, then the document to be printed with the 1st print command prints on its own (comes out of the queue).

And, if the printer cable is connected to USB 3, then only the 3rd and subsequent print commands will go to USB 3. If I unplug the printer cable from USB 3 and plug it into USB 1, then the document to be printed on the 1st print command prints on its own. Then, if I unplug the printer cable from USB 1 and plug it into USB 2, then the document to be printed on the 2nd print command prints on its own. But, if If I plug the cable into USB 2 first, then nothing prints. It looks like USB 1 has to be emptied before USB 2.

Is there some way to configure the printing so that any document will print whenever from whatever USB port the printer is plugged into?

I find it very aggravating to realize that if my printer cable is plugged into USB 2 or USB 3, the ... Read more

Hi,

"Bot Found

RUBotted asked me to download HouseCall which I did but it did not find anything. I also have Avast AV, Ad-aware. I regularly scan with them too but they never repots anything suspicious.

What's up with this Spybot S&D find, is that suspicious, malicious or just a false positive. Pls help I am very worried. I am using ZoneAlarm which I think by default turns XP's native firewall off though not really sure.

I always come to this forum because if you wanna get some real expert advice then then one place is bleeping computer.

Not sure what is going on, but 75% of the time when a user logs into any of our machines that have Win7 the ports disappear and they can't print.

Any ideas?

These printers are mapped on a Win2003 server to the network and only these Win7 systems have this issue.

A:Printer Ports disappearing on Network Win7 machines

I have the exact same problem. Win2k3 print server using GP to deploy printers. I too have change the Point and Print stuff in GPO

It is real big issue. Some staff are fine and others continually have the problem.

We have Windows Vista and XP here that have not got this problem at all!

Also with the deploying of printers, it looks like some dont deploy correctly as they have yellow exclamation marks. I then remove the printer and perform a reboot and the printer comes back fine. Interestingly if I try to remove a printer that has deployed correctly I get an error stating that the device cannot be removed.

Man Windows 7 might be a nicer OS to use but with issues like these, MS better get their butt into gear!

Thanks in advance!

Just updated/cleaned up my computer after a nasty virus. Runs great but there is a setting/configuration I lost in the process. The setting/configuration allowed me to simply insert a compact flash card from a digital camera into an available port on my (turned on) printer, and then it would be automatically displayed on my computer screen for instructions where to download ( a prompt with several options, one being to download to a file and then (eventually) delete the pics from the flash card).

Things I did after virus removal (downadup), updated with XP service pack 3, updated way too many security packs from MS, cleaned registry, cleaned disc and defrag.

Does anyone know what this utility/application was? It was sure handy. I'd like to get that back as we do a fair amount of digital pics for work. Nothing I can find in the printer manual, help topics, Wizards.

Bought a "USB to Female 25 Parallel Ports Printer Adapter Cable" on eBay to connect the laptop to the HP printer.

After connecting the two cables and plugging in the USB to the notebook, you know when you hear the Windows sound that a new hardware has been found, it makes that sound continuously for like seven times. Obviously something is wrong.

When I attempt to print:

"This document failed to print
click here to open the print queue, and then for assistance, click troubleshooter on the help menu."
Is the parallel port cable bad?

I have trouble installing a HP Color LaserJet 8550N printer (has JetDirect Printer Server 600N with IP address of 192.168.68.4) to my XPpro PC.
I was stuck when Add Printer Wizard ask me to “specific a Printer”. I selected “Browse for a printer” and came up with nothing (no printer). I tried selecting “Connect to this printer” but I do not know what name to type in (Example is \\server\\printer). I tried selecting “Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network” but I do not what URL to type in (Example is http://server/printer/myprinter/printer). Therefore, I cancelled the installation.
I had then installed its Printer Utility. The utility is capable of finding the printer and showing me it’s Properties. However, I still ended up with no printer listed to use in Printers and Faxes.
So, XPpro is a step backward in this case.
I could install this printer with printer server on W98/ME because their Add Printer Wizards allow me to use either the IP address or the hardware address to locate the printer server.
I hope I have described my problem well. Please help!

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.
