Email Sending Virus?

Q: Email Sending Virus?

On two occasions my computer has sent emails from my hotmail account to my entire address book. The emails occured about 1 week apart. These emails contain a subject line with an unfarmilar random name (at least to me). One of the names I have seen repeated is nadine belmant. In the body is a link to a website to buy viagra and other crap. Scans with AVG and Spybot have come up with no issues reported. I do not have any other error messages or alerts from windows. Running Windows 7. Thanks for any help you can provide in advance

Preferred Solution: Email Sending Virus?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello..

My old PC running Windows XP recently contracted a virus or two. One of them, av.exe, I was able to kill through being quick with the task manager on start up. I then ran BitDefender and was able to scan and delete everything problematic I found.

I thought it was fixed, until at 6:30 this morning my friends called me complaining about being sent a virus from my email...!!

I'm not sure what I missed or what to do next. I know this isn't the place for Hijack this logs, but I ran one just in case. Maybe it could at least give you guys a starting point...

Hello, i just happen to notice that in my email inbox i get "Delivery Status Notification (Failure)?" from the postmaster to dozens of emails that i never heard of or sent an email to and believe i have some sort of virus doing this. The email talks about some world of warcraft scam but how do i fix this?

A:Virus in my email? Sending spam?

it's NOT 'in your email' but rather someone has hijacked your email address

there is only one solution that really works
get another email address
inform all your contacts of the change
discontinue using the old address
inform the ISP of the fact and have the OLD account disabled
The issue is how that email address was made so easily available;

As email users, we owe it to one another to use the BCC feature when adding multiple
recipients. If a correspondant forwards a group list to someone else, at least the addresses of your friends are hidden.

My brother's Outlook has been sending emails (see below) with peoples names in the subject line and only a http link in the body of the email to members of his address book without his knowledge. He has ran Malwarebytes and Norton Antivirus but the emails continue. Any ideas how he can get rid of this virus/trojan horse?

Hello, I'm trying to help out a friend with a computer issue. He says that for a while he was getting a pop up that looked like the FBI virus and was telling him that he had to pay money to unlock his computer. He got rid of it by running Superantispyware but asked me to take a look at his computer for him to be sure. This was a couple of months ago and I cleaned up the computer a bit by running Avast and Malwarebytes so we thought everything was good. But about a week ago he says that his friend recieved some emails from him that were spam so he changed his Yahoo password and asked me to take a look again. For email he doesn't use any programs and just logs into Yahoo so since changing his password there hasn't been any more spam as far as we know and Avast (which I just reinstalled) and Malwarebytes haven't found anything. But I was hoping somebody could take a look at his logs and let me know if there is anything on the computer.

Our internet ISP, Netscape, has blocked our email account because they say we are sending bulk email. They said it must be a virus on our computer that is doing it. They said to scan our computer, change the password, and they would have our account open within 48-72 hours. We have a dial up connection.

Is it possible for this to happen without our knowing it?

What would be the best program to scan our computer to look for and get rid of this bulk email sending virus?

Thanks

A:Virus sending bulk email from my laptop?

Back scatter is a side-effect of e-mail spam, viruses and worms, where e-mail servers receiving spam and other mail send bounce messages to an innocent party. This occurs because the original message's envelope sender is forged to contain the e-mail address of the victim. A very large proportion of such e-mail is sent with a forged From: header, matching the envelope sender.The bulk email software should produce a number of valuable reports that will provide statistics pertaining to unsubscribers.

My mother's gmail account seems to have contracted a virus that sends an email with the subject line '+hi+' to everyone in the contacts book and with the url 'http://sites.google.com/site/s3895yhf56eydya/aovq7a' in the message body. The site appears to be Canadian and is selling vyagra.

I don't think it's likely to have done any harm to the computer itself, and we noticed the problem when she received several failed message emails. The machine we noticed the problem was a mac so I guess that makes it even less likely the virus is affecting the actual computer but obviously it's not great for my Mum to be sending everyone she knows links to vyagra sites and also I don't know if the emails themselves contain the virus and would infect the recipients.

Is it possible to disinfect the account or does one just have to start over with a new one. That would be hugely inconvenient given how long my mother has used this account.

One of my email address is being 'hijacked'
emails are sent to people in my address book providing a strange link (mostly to pills)
I have run my Norton to clean the virus and tried to clean my history and registry.
But as expected, every time I reboot my PC, the virus comes back.
I have checked your forum and found something similar but the support you provided was specific to the PC and I don't want to follow the same steps and make some ireversable damages.
Please HELP!! This is urgent! I have tried to fix this for months and got few complaints from the people receiving the emails I am not sending purposely!

Details enclosed in the email sent to tech guys support!

Hello,
Thank you so much for your help. Recently alot of my email contacts have written to me saying that they got an email from me with no subject attached, just Re: . Some of their computers have alerted them that the email was suspicious and not to open it. Other people DID open it and there were Viagra ads or animated russian websites, etc...I've gotten alot of notifications in my spam box with the title: [email protected]....failure notice. If I click on it, it usually shows the email contacts that messages tried to be sent to and the website that was trying to be sent....usually all different.
We have ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.467.0...we've run two separate scans and no virus or threats are detected.
Just this evening, about 30 emails were sent out between 6:33 and 6:34 pm.....!
I appreciated any help you can give me!
Thank you.

In the last 2 weeks a couple emails have been sent out by my Yahoo email address to my entire contact lists containing different links which are probably viruses or some other harmful info. These do seem to be coming from my computer as the messages are not showing up in my sent folder. However, I am trying to make sure it is not something on my end.

My OS is Vista home and I mostly use Firefox 3.0 for browsing. I also run AVG 1 time a week and it has picked up 2 potential trojans in the last 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I use Outlook for email, from Office 2007 Professional because the accounting program and my Palm Pro PDA likes it.

Just recently I have had a couple of complaints that emails with a video attached I have forwarded have been delivered to the addressee in excess of 30 or 40 times.

The latest was last night when one of my sons said he had received it 104 times, and another friend in the USA 99 times, needless to say both aren't happy, the video was a wmv (3mb).

When my son called me a an hour or so later it was still in my outgoing mail box, obviously because it was still sending.

I have run full AV scan using Esset Nod32 which came up clean, so I’m at a loss where else the problem is or where/what to look for.

Thanks for reading…..Any clues/help would be appreciated.

We have received emails from employees where thier email address shows up as "[email protected]" instead of "[email protected]". They did not send this out, and the email contains some virus that crashed our Norton AV completely - NAV now says we need to completely uninstall & reinstall. I can't find anything on the web about a email worm/virus that adds "3D" to the front of the address of the sender. Does anyone have any info on it?

A:"3D"preceding valid email addresses sending virus out

I've received the same type of thing. A 3D in front of an email address. My isp intercepted this and said that it was trying to infect with the Netsky series of viruses.
The email address was being spoofed just as spammers have learned to do. Norton has missed things before so I'm trying different anti-virus protections.

hello:

i have been trying to fix my email/outlook spam issue.  emails are going out WITH my actual email address, sending emails to people in my contacts, etc.
I also have been getting a ton of spam emails myself.

I use:

-Windows 7 Pro
-64 Bit
-Outlook 2010
-I have our own domain name email address, that is hosted by Frontier

Odd thing:  I changed my password for my email, but my outlook kept sending/receiving with the old password.
When I tried to update  the new password in outlook (which I verified by using the webmail versus outlook), it would not accept it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Intermittently, Outlook 2007 will crash while sending an email and, needless to say, the email is not sent. However I wanted to know if there is a temp or backup copy of that mail anywhere. I've looked in drafts and it's not there.

I've sometimes typed a very long email and then lost the whole email when Outlook crashes so I just wanted to know if, like Word, there is a temp file that may be created.

Thanks.

So an email saying, "Greetings!", has the text file attached that says, "Greetings!".

Any ideas?

Turn off one or the other in the E-mail options, would be my guess.

Does anyone know of a way to turn off the email address in the BCC section of Vista email and show only the names? In XP Windows Express, it only showed the names with a semi-colon between names. I've just gotten my new computer (Vista 64 bit) set up with email contacts. When I send BCCs, it lists the name and the email addresses which makes that section very long.

Hi, What i have done to aleviate this problem is when adding contacts to the address book, i have listed a display name. So when sending an email it will only display what you have listed. You can edit the contact in address book by selecting the person, right click, properties, it then will enable you to edit this.

Hope this helped

This is just a way of preventing/blocking spam or other intrusive email by creating rules in your email client.Sometimes the rules can be pretty strict and they may not know just how strict they set them.They probably didnt do it on purpose.

Hi there

what email client are you using on both systems, also remember network connections and are you running from SAME computer.

Linux networking in general is superior to Windows but if you are using a decent email client it shouldn't make a huge amount of difference.

Other factors -- what "pre-scans" etc are done by the email client (virus / attachment checking etc), are both set up to use imap / pop3 or going through an Ms Exchange server. Loads of things you need to compare when doing this type of analysis.

Any webmail based client is likely to be hideously slow though when compared with a proper email client on whatever system.

Cheers

Hi, and welcome to the board.

- First, set Windows 98 to display three-letter file extensions: Open My Computer, choose View, Folder Options and click the View tab. Deselect the checkmark next to "Hide file extensions for known filetypes." Click OK.

- Click Start, Run, type sendto, and click OK. Windows will open a window titled SendTo.

- Right-click in the SendTo window and select New, Text Document.
Rename the file to Mail Recipient.MAPIMail (copy this exactly).
Close the SendTo window.

Good luck,

Hi again chasf.
Most ISP limit the size of an attachment to 5mb but your link with your server will normally time out way before you reach this.

Previously i was helped with code to send a static email through outlook express. Which work perfectly in my home network but when I took it to my work network I could not get the emails to send. Here is the code that worked at my network at home:
Code:
Public Sub Email()

Dim iMsg As Object
Dim iConf As Object
Dim WBname As String
Set iMsg = CreateObject("CDO.Message")
Set iConf = CreateObject("CDO.Configuration")

With iMsg
Set .Configuration = iConf
.To = "[email protected]"
.CC = ""
.BCC = ""
.From = """test"" <[email protected]>"
.Subject = "test"
.TextBody = "message"
.AddAttachment ""
.send
End With

End Sub
The only major difference that is obvious, is the email at the office requires SPA where as my home network does not. Any thoughts Would be great!

I am having a problem sending email to an AOL address via outlook 2002. I can send to the address using my webmail portal and my yahoo, but not through my outlook. all other emails go out properly.

A:sending email to AOL

Hi, AOL email never did work with Outlook Express, I am not sure about Microsoft Outlook that comes with Office, if that is the Outlook you are meaning....

AOL users could not send mail nor get mail through OE, at least back a few years ago they could not, and if AOL was the service provider....there were some utilities that claimed to circumvent this, but I have not used them, and it seemed difficult to install and set these up, I did not bother with it at all.
(Things might be different with AOL mail these days.)
If you typed up a new mail in OE, and tried to send it, you would get an error message...of course, since there usually would have not been any account set up for POP3 mail in or out, no servers to connect to, and since AOL used different types of mail service, no way to get mail into OE.

Getting a Gmail account, free, might be a quicker solution, Gmail is simply great.

You do still I think have to be invited to Gmail, so if you know someone who has it, they should have invitations to spare...if you want to try it, let us know, I have invitations.

Hey all,

I keep getting e-mails from various places saying that I sent them an e-mail with the "sobig" virus. Problem is, I'm not sending anything. I've downloaded all the patches that I know of, Norton Anti-Virus runs every night and doesn't find anything. Does this mean I have the virus but Norton doesn't find it? Why is my email sending things to people I don't even know? How can I make it stop?

Thanks,
PaveFE

I am using outlook 2000. When I build a new email to send I would like to be able to send it to my out box, not automatically send to the recipeint. Does anyone know how to do this.

A:sending email

In Outlook Express, you can set it up to do that, but I don't think Outlook will let you. With O/E, there's a choice somewhere in the Options that says "Do not send mail immediately," but I found no such feature in Outlook.

When sending an email from OE, above To:, Cc: and Bbc:, there is a 'from'.
How to remove this 'from' from there.
Thank You!

Hello, If you select view at the top of the screen then untick the from box. That should do it.

I have XP and use sea monkey 1.0.6 for browser and mail. I have a question.

When sending email is it better to send in plain text and HTML
or send in plain text only
or send in HTML only
I have always sent in plain text only but my daughter tells me I should send in plain text and HTML.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Sending email

I would say that most people have it set to plain text........

Can't get broadband via phone line, so have opted for a Three Dongle and Mobile Broadband

Seems people have had ongoing issues with sending mail from another isp.

I can receive OK through a Supanet pop mail.

Cant send - even techies are clueless to what settings for smtp

Someone suggested signing up for a gmail account, which I have, so that I can use forwarding or something, and change the smtp to gmail - but i lost the plot after that

I am using Outlook Express

Need to know what to set gmail settings to and also OE smtp

A:Sending Email with Three Network

They restrict incoming on Port 25. Only a shot for SMTP, but try 110 and 587.
Use Gmail on the web. No need for a client (OE).

Ten days ago my Outlook stopped sending emails but continued to receive emails. My error code was 0x800E42109. Cox (my ISP) stated that it was an Outlook problem so I use Outlook Express. The error code on Outlook Express 0X800CCC0E with the same result. They told me to contact Microsoft.

Much work in between with calls and emails to Cox trying to see if they were blocking my port 25,etc. Installing and uninstalling Outlook and outlook express. Googling this and that. Turning firewalls and antivirus off and on, checking rootkit programs, running scans ad nauseum. I also loaded Thunderbird which also would not send but would receive.

Finally they stated that even though my firewall allowed all the mail programs (based on the traffic log), the reason for the problem was my System Suite fire wall and to please uninstall it. After uninstalling System Suite, all my winsock settings went haywire (shame on you Vcom) and had to be fixed by WinsockXPfix.

I then recontacted Cox with all their requests accomplished and the same errors occurring with or without the XP firewall. The Cox rep finally said he would check my modem and, lo and behold, the firmware settings were wrong, so he reset them to the latest firmware. Everything worked fine after that.

Hopefully, anybody else with the same type of problem will use this experience to have their ISP guys check the cable modem first. It only takes a minute.
