Seagate Free Agent Drive causing boot up problems

Q: Seagate Free Agent Drive causing boot up problems

Bought me a 320 GB Free Agent external drive by Seagate. Plugged it in to USB 2.0 port; works flawlessly. Problem is, when I shut down and reboot the computer, it seems to interrupt the boot up process, causing a black screen, and stopping the boot process right there. I made sure that it wasn't included in the boot devices in the BIOS, and this boot up problem happens only about 50% of the time. If I unplug the drive, it'll boot up fine almost 100% of the time. Any idea what could be happening here? I'm running XP home, with 1.5 G of memory, and two internal 80 GB HD's. I tried plugging this drive directly into the tower, and into a hub - same problem either way. (Actually seemed to occur more frequently when plugged directly into the tower.)

The site's tech support pages have no drivers to update (plug and play), and doesn't tackle this problem.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Seagate Free Agent Drive causing boot up problems

This is probably a BIOS issue. I have two systems here, (the two newest), that have the same issue. When I boot with a USB device attached, the BIOS gets confused about what device to boot, and there's nothing in the BIOS setup that will make it right.

Do what my doctor prescribes for issues like this: "If it hurts when you do that, don't do that".

I have been having on going problems with a Seagate Free Agent go 500 GB external USB drive and pretty much any computer that it is attached to. This is the second drive that I have had after having the first one replaced I seem to be having the same or similar problems. Basically the drive was working fine and then it basically over night everything went wrong. When hooked up I cannot operate any software, remove the drive, check disk management or reboot the system. I cannot boot the system with the drive attached, it stalls. I cannot even safely remove the drive without forcing the computer to shut down with the power button, as soon as the drive is no longer attached all programs immediately respond like nothing ever happened. I have seen similar situations described on several different boards but no one seems to have any solutions. Any help would be appreciated.

Try a USB "Y" splitter where you pull the power for the drive off two USB ports rather than one and see if the problem continues.

Free Agent external drive does not show in computer with other drives.
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not…check the device list….for any Free Agent device……double click…and check driver…. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting…..plug in the power cord…. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are..you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)

I've been using a 1TB FreeAgent Drive as a system backup since early 2009. It's worked fine all that time. I've never had any problems with it. Several days ago, our home suffered a momentary (3-5 seconds) power failure while I was using my computer, shutting everything down. When I rebooted the computer, everything was working normally, EXCEPT for the FreeAgent Drive.

Under normal circumstances, it boots up with the computer, emitting that familiar whine as its logo lights up. Since the power failure, it refuses to activate. The device emits the telltale whining noise, but it does not light up, and clicks off, only to continue this cycle in an endless loop until either I shut off the computer or unplug the drive. Because the device is not active, the computer doesn't recognize that it's plugged into the USB port. I have my entire music library, hundreds of important documents, family photos and home movies in this drive, and if it's a lost cause, I might just break down in tears.

Does anybody know what exactly is wrong with my FreeAgent Drive, and if so, is there anything I can do to salvage my data without spending hundreds of dollars on a professional recovery service?

A:Seagate Free Agent Desk Drive Problem

First of all, files that you don't have backed up are files you should expect to lose. And the worst place possible to store them is on a drive like that which fails easier than any other that exist.

Since all drives will fail, you probably just lost your files sooner than later.

The power surge likely fried something. It may be the drive electronics, or just the case. It can cost into the $1000's to get files off the drive if the drive is affected. But you may be able to get them if it is just the case. But you will have to remove the drive from the case and attach it to another machine, either internally, or through an adapter for USB.

Hey, my 1TB Seagate Free Agent USB Ext. Hard drive is not powering up when it is plugged in. I've tried switching out USB cords, but still nothing happens. I haven't found an interchangeable power cord yet so that may be where the problem is, but what happens is I have it plugged into the wall and the usb into the usb port on my laptop and the hard drive doesn't even turn on and/or show up under my drives. Is this fixable or am I screwed? Thanks!

I recently removed AVG from my system and installed Norton Internet Security and now the software backs up only 200MB of 32GB of disk space.

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with Seagate Backup and Norton Internet Security?

Have a fairly old Seagate Free Agent Desk external HD. 1 TB

Can't find the power brick that came with it specifically, but I have boxes full
of them.

a. do these HD's take AC or DC from the brick output ?

b. Any idea on correct voltage level it "probably requires ?

A:Seagate Free Agent Voltage Input Requirement ?

Bob they are 12vdc and iirc at least 2A. Yes just checked now.

I have a variety of Seagate externals, one a newer Desk as yours (uses a wall-wart transformer) and an older "PushButton" with even the now-ancient squarish USB port. This latter one uses a power brick with a removeable AC cord. Either type will work! Of course, the center conductor is Plus if you use a VOM to check one of your "boxes full of them" power bricks!

Unfortunately Seagate never to my knowledge made any effort to "mark" these so I suffered your malady recently having to figure this out. This Desk wallwart I'm looking at now says "Asian Power Devices Inc" on it but there's no telling I suppose what Seagate might have packaged over the years.

I do try these days to put a piece of tape on all my wallwarts with the gizmo it's for written on it!

This does involve Kali Linux but I believe it DOES NOT specifically involve this distro. So, please ignore this fact unless it may involve this after all.

I have a USB drive that I had used for the setup of Kali Linux live boot. (Originally 8GB) Now, during the install process, I can't remember perfectly however, I started the install but it started to install on the drive instead of the HDD I had partitioned. I eventually was able to try it again and it was successful. However...

The reason I am posting it here is I have tried to format, extend, reassign, etc... this drive and nothing has worked. I have no idea why it is doing this and it's a pain considering I can only use 2.5GB now. So as you can see from the screenshots, I can't do anything really.

Any help would be appreciated!

I recently installed a fresh Windows 10 Home on my laptop. I was having some problems and so I made a post on this forum. That post can be seen following this link: Factory reset laptop that has had an upgrade to SSD by cloning old HD
That has been solved in a weird way. Basically I had to remove my secondary HD which I had in a caddy connecting where my CD drive used to be.

Now I am having a problem with the secondary hard drive. If I leave it out then I can boot the computer and everything works fine. When I insert the caddy (by shutting down the computer first, of course) and then boot the computer, it gets stuck on a loading screen with the small Windows logo and swirling loading dots on a black background. It stays like that until the computer eventually decides to sleep. Something like 30 minutes.

In the bios both of the hard drives are registered and I can see them in the boot options.

I have also tried to connect the hard drive which is in the caddy to the computer using an external enclosure and then it shows one of the partition as being something like 30GB (should be around 300GB) and the other partition shows up but is unreachable.

I am clueless as to why this is happening.

Hello, Havent posted in a while. Now I have a problem though, hope someone can help.

My computer used to be a Dell. Now, after many years of good service, it is a rebuilt system, I think it is Realtek? It is Windows 2000 XP Home Edition PC.

I have used AVG Free editions of Anti-virus protection happily for years, updating as needed. Also Adaware spy ware protection. Here is my recent history.

One day I decided to run my Adaware, as I do weekly..so I ran the update for checking on latest threats. As soon as I did, my system slowed down extremely slow, and something was running constantly. After a week of trying to delete AdAware, but getting error messages saying to verify my identity, checking their support site, etc, I called my Internet provider. They informed me that many of these free providers will get you hooked on the free version then when you go to update when the new pay version comes out, mess up your system so you have to buy to get it off your system. (or make you THINK you do) What was happening is, there was a constant loop of the program trying to open, behind the scenes, and you had to figure out how to go into the system and disable that from going on. The forum message board explained how to go in and get the processes to stop the loop so I could uninstall the AdAware, but it took over a week and several tries. I got rid of AdAware and will not be using it anymore after that nightmare.

Once that problem was solved, I got up the other day, and AVG 7.5 d... Read more

Hey guys. I have a 300 gig Seagate drive. Well its not been working for a few months.

I am 100% sure its nothing to do with the drive itself coz believe it or not, I haven't MOVED my drive from my desk since I bought it. I'm pretty sure there's some loose connection somewhere inside the drive as sometimes it does show up.

Well, I sent it to Seacare and after 2 weeks, they returned it. And guess what? I still wasn't working! Same problem.

The thing is, the drive doesn't show up on my Mac. I've tried every possible troubleshooting method without success.

I was thinking, what if I opened up the drive? I could just break open the plastic and see what connections were loose. Is it possible to do that, remove the metal drive from inside and connect it using new wires? I AM really desperate, so..

I purchased 2 Seagate ST32000641AS drives. These are 2TB drives giving 4TB all up.

They are S.M.A.R.T enabled drives and as such I installed monitoring software to check up on them from time to time . I am concerned that both of these drives are showing indication of failure already. Normally I just use 1 program to check but I have tried with 3 different ones and they all show the health of both drives, one at 40% and the other at 32%.

One drive is showing Surface Read Error Rate at 80% health and Controller Hardware ECC Recovered at 32. The other drive is showing Surface Read Error Rate at 67%, Surface Seek error rate at 51%, and Controller Hardware ECC Recovered at 40%.

Have I got reason to be worried as these drives are only about 3 to 4 months in use. It is not showing any physical problem except that it is the slowest part of my PC rating at only 5.9 on the Windows Experience Test.

A:Seagate Drive Problems???

Download and run SeaTools, Seagate's diagnostic software. If that says there are major problems, I'd look into RMAing the drives. I've heard in the past that Seagates higher capacity drives have a higher fail rate.

Recently installed Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Almost immediately started having problems with my Free Agent 500GB external hard drive:

not showing at all in My Computer
showed, indicating 100GB used, but when I clicked on it, said "empty"
Light blinking on FA
FA will not shut down when PC shuts down

I followed directions from a Forum and unplugged FA, shut down PC, replugged FA, and it worked fine, showing up with all contents, until next boot up, when one or more of the above problems reoccurred.

I HAVE been getting a Windows message about a USB port not working, but have assumed this referred to my front case USB ports....don't know if there's a connection or not.

Right now, the FA drive is not recognized in My Computer, light on FA is blinking.....HELP

A:Free Agent external hard drive not recognized by Vista

Problem solved....after reading similar posts here and elsewhere, figured it had to be a connectivity issue. I finally disconnected the AC adapter cord from the drive itself, reconnected, rebooted, and the Free Agent has been recognized and working fine for 4 days now....

how do i install external hard drive?

A:lost driver for free agent go external hard drive

You should be able to just plug it in and go.

However, if that doesn't work, plug it in and right-click on My Computer, then click "manage" from the drop-down menu. After that, find "Device Manager" in the left sidebar, and click on that. See if there are any yellow question marks that look like this:

If you do, you need to update the driver. That can be found on the Free Agent Go website, however I will need to know what model hard drive you have.

My desktop system has a 2TB WD main hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it and 2x 3TB Samsung drives for storage.

I added a 4TB Seagate NAS drive ST4000VN000 for more storage and now the PC won't boot properly in the morning.

- On first boot in the morning Windows will load very slowly, and the 4TB drive won't show up in explorer.
- If I reboot and look in BIOS the 4TB drive is not listed as present.
- If I switch the machine off, and on again the 4TB drive will appear in BIOS, and will function normally all day, including after extended periods of the whole machine being switched off.

- I have swapped SATA cables and power leads endlessly and no improvement, and my 3 original drives continue to function normally
- The SATA ports are set to AHCI
- My mobo is a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Rev 3.0 with the latest BIOS loaded
- My PSU is a Hiper 580W Type-R Modular, all voltages appear to be good

I work with computers professionally, but this one has me a bit stumped. Could my new drive be faulty? Maybe its because it is an NAS drive, not desktop? Could my motherboard have a problem with 4TB drives?

SOLVED: This morning I went immediately in to BIOS instead of trying to load Windows again and noticed the +12v rail was at 10.5v, and over the next few minutes it rose to 11.8v. This explains everything for me, I guess the PSU is failing and the new drive must be extra sensitive to low voltages. I will replace the PSU and report back if it doesn't fix things.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go, external hard drive and it looks just like this.

It has over 200GB of artwork I need for my work and it isn't working on any of my 8 computers in the office.

When I plug it in (USB) it says "Device driver was not installed successfully, device unplugged"

Would this be the usb cord? or would this be something wrong with the hard drive itself?

Don't know exactly what you need, but here are the numbers on it.

The PN: 9KW2AL-502 1 TB

The SN: 2GE925LH

A:Seagate Hard Drive Problems!

Could be a cable or drive issue. As it doesn't appear that it's being recognized or installed properly, it could simply be a faulty enclosure. In which case you could remove the drive from the enclosure (*will VOID your warranty*) and connect it internally, via a USB adapter, or with another enclosure.

And you should have a BACKUP copy of all data that you don't want to lose. If it's important, more than one copy. Live and learn.

I was having troubles with Tapeware, the backup app that shipped with my drive (Seagate STT20000A), but I'm starting to think the problem might be the tape drive itself.

Under Windows 2000 Pro, I deleted the drive from Removable Storage>Physical Locations. When I reboot the drive is listed twice, both occurences with a fat red X through the icon. If I leave it as is and reboot again, there will be four instances of the drive under Removable Storage. Of course, none of them work.

Does anyone have suggestions? Possibly the drivers for the tape drive?

A:Problems with Seagate Tape Drive

Please let me have an e-mail address by PM.

I have a long e-mail from Seagate detailing issues with this drive.

I'll then send you this e-mail, plus the URL for my own web space where I have a 5 mb ( = 4 floppy disk ) driver file, plus the other two file mentioned below as a zip file.

The file is latest Seagate driver for the STT20000A TBU, I don't use it as XP runs it without any issues. The other two files are a hardware / firmware update and DOS test utility.

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. W/ASUS P7P55D Deluxe board Very stable and non buggy.

Computer was running great with multiple drives. I substituted one of my 1TB drives with a brand new Seagate 3 TB drive. With the new drive hooked up, the computer will not boot and gives a message that there is no hard drive detected, put media in and hit the key. (something to that effect).

If I enter the bios in the condition, it shows all the drives in their correct order and the boot sequence is the first hard drive, CD, etc. It has detected the new drive as drive #3.

But it will not boot.

But, if I disconnect the new drive (power and SATA connector), the compute will boot up fine.

I have checked all the connectors ad they seem fine.

Is there something about the sequence in which the SATA connectors have to be connected?

I am mystified.

A:Computer won't boot with new Seagate Barracuda drive as secondary drv

Sometimes the sequence can be critical. can you check to see that the original HDD is plugged into SATA port 0? If not, try that to see if it works.

I realise this is a very specific issue indeed, and also kind of a '1st world' issue... but I'd like to know what's causing my Gigabyte P57Xv7 laptop to boot twice, every time whenever my 4TB Seagate Backup Plus USB3.0 drive is connected to it. Here are the salient points:

The first boot doesn't even make it to the spinning Windows circle, it only gets to the initial Gigabyte screen, then after a few seconds it reboots.
It's not the same type of double boot that occurs whenever you first plug in a new USB device (which I assume is for the BIOS to enumerate the new device?) - those boots are much shorter than this one.
It only boots twice when the boot is from a shutdown state. Not when it's a Windows 10 restart.
However I doubt it's a Windows issue, as it happens even when I disable Windows Boot Manager in BIOS (which makes the laptop boot straight into BIOS instead of loading Windows 10)
I've tried various BIOS settings (like enabling/disabling USB Legacy Support)
I've also tried various Windows settings (like disabling Hibernation and playing with various Power settings)
The Seagate drive is not a boot drive, and there are no hidden/system files in the root directory. Its file system in NTFS.
The drive has passed all of Seagate's tests via its SeaTools program.
While I don't have an awful lot of other hardware to play with, I can tell you that 1) the Seagate does not cause another older laptop to do the same thing... Read more

I recently bought a second hand pc and have tried to instal my old HD as a slave.

The master HD is a Seagate ST320420A (20gb)
The slave is a Seagate ST380012A (80GB)

I have set the jumper settings on both as per the info on the seagate site (http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ata/st320420a.html) but it doesn't seem to register in "My Computer" and when I go into the bios it says no slave is installed.

This is the first time I have had a go at upgrading/dealing with internal hardware so Im not 100% sure what Im doing is correct. e.g. Does the slave need to have a cable going into the 4 larger pins next to the jumpers?

Can someone talk me through it please as Im going nuts? Im obviously making some newbe mistake.

A:Problems Instaling Seagate Slave Drive

Yes both hard drives need A power cable and an IDE Ribbon/cable going in to them. If you have them attached to the same ribbon make sure the ribbon is in the IDE 0 slot on the MB. If you are using a separate ribbon for the slave then the slave jumper has to be set to master (which would be secondary master in the bios) and plugged into IDE 1 on the MB.

i am looking at buying a cheap 2nd hand seagate cheetah 10k.7 drive for my games and windows 7 as a startup disk, is this advisable, as it is faster (i think) than my current, pretty much full WD caviar green. also it is fibre channel rather than sata, and i have no idea if thats good or bad, i'd never seen it before.
or is it better to install on a 1tb caviar black i am also going to get.
thanks for any info, can provide pc specs if nessesary

A:Seagate Cheetah 10k7 vs WD Caviar Black as boot drive

I used to use a WD raptor 10k drive for the os. FWIW a more modern WD black series [750gig] actually benched higher than the raptor.

It is up to you however you do understand that the seagate is a scsi type drive and needs a scsi controller to function correct?

FWIW if you want speed, then go with SSD. That WILL provide a big speed increase over the seagate drive AND no need to buy a scsi controller.

Hi, when I got my new computer, there was a free trial for Office 2007 on it that I wanted to get rid of. I used Your Uninstaller to do it, and YU only found some kind of Office Trial assistant thing to uninstall, so that's what I got rid of. However, the free trial of Office remains in my program list, and when I click them the programs open. Yet when I look for the programs with YU or via Add/Remove programs, Office is nowhere to be found. This is causing problems for me, because Windows has been asking me to install "important" updates for Office, but when I allow it to update Windows has problems configuring them and my computer is unable to properly load Vista.

So, how do I find these darn Office programs and uninstall them? Once I do that will Windows stop bugging me about Office updates?

Thank you for any help!
