I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On Windows7 Pro,  trying to run IIS.  The way I am used to execute is  on the browser "localhost".  I used to have the code in the directory  C:\inetpub\wwwroot.   Even before I copy,  I am hoping to see
the image IIS welcome page.  Once it is successful, want to copy the code as that was the way I used to do in Window XP.    However I am getting the following message.  I have administrator access to the machine and gave full permissions
to the folder  'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.  Still the same message.
Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access to 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.

Can someone help me to address this issue.  Thanks a lot in advance.

My not quite 3 months old Win 7 system has taken a notable dislike to me trying to install programs now that I have an actual need to burn some disks of the data and DVD kind.

For certain programs I am getting that lovely little message box which states;
"Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied."

I previously used DVD Flick on my XP machine, but it will not finalize the process to burn discs on this PC. I have attempted to use some others, none of which worked or even fully installed, and settled for trying out the highly rated Aimersoft program. No dice, error 5.

For data optical disks I tried a couple of programs that likewise wouldn't work or fully install once Ashampoo decided my trial was expired after I had used it all of once a week or so ago. IMGburn did it's "no drives detected" thing, so I downloaded CDburnerXP, which promptly followed the same route as the Aimersoft download for causing an error 5.
After a morning spent Googling fixes, none of which have worked, I guess I'll throw it up on here.

Permissions seem to be fine for User and Administrator, as in all allowed.
Run as Administrator or compatibility to XP SP 3 did not work.
Redirecting to a C:\Temp folder did not work.
Exiting Comodo Firewall and disabling Avast shields does not help.

In case it was malware or a virus I did a full scan with Avast, no results, then downloaded Malware Bytes which installed, scanned, and removed a co... Read more

What firewall do you have?

You said you uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials .... Why? Did it work? Did it disable Windows Defender (as it should have)?
Do you have another Anti-virus program running?

I had trouble updating the MSE definitions a couple of days ago and I tried everything to get it to update, something about no connection. I gave up and uninstalled MSE completely using Revo. From Microsoft's web site, I downloaded and installed the newest version of MSE and the definitions updated just fine. Finally, the action center red flag is gone. However, a couple of days later, an alert comes back. This time, it's notifying me that Windows Security Center Service is turned off. With the Action Center open, I clicked "turn on now" but nothing happens, Security Center remains off.
I go to Run-services.msc and scroll down to Security Center and double click on it. Service status says "stopped". I click start and get the message, "Windows could not start the Security Center Service on local computer. Error 5: Access is denied.
This is all done from an administrator account.
Why wasn't I able to update MSE definitions and why, after a reinstall of a perfectly working MSE, am I now unable to turn on Security Center Services?

Most third party security AV/AS software will disable Windows security software in favor of their own. This is normal. Using more than one anti-virus security program at one time is not recommended. They can interfere with each other giving you gaps in coverage, cause conflicts that lead to system crashes, and tend to slow your system down by using excessive resources. Pick one that you like and stick with it.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 Intel Pentium running Windows XP  sp3 and have been getting tons of junk mail. I ran Avast, malware bytes &spybot. Nothing found. So I started looking through the Dell help on my computer. I'm not as savvy as I'd like to be and while trying to fix the issue myself I did something that I shouldn't have. First, I tried system restore to go back to a later date but it wouldn't let me no mater which date I tried. Then,I followed a suggestion regarding the registries. HUGE mistake! Now my computer is stuck in a boot loop. I obviously need to repopulate my hives but have no idea how. When the computer starts the Windows XP logo pops up. Then a box pops up saying lsass.exe access denied a proccess has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights. When I click ok It restarts. The Dell logo pops up then the Windows XP logo and then the access denied again. Ive tried to start in last known good configuration. Safe mode. System restore. But, i keep ending back in the loop. So, I tried ordering some disks that I thought may be able to help while I've been reading through threads for information. I don't have any of the original software for this cop, I purchased it used a few years ago. But, I purchased a Knoppix 7.6.1., and system rescue from same CO, & 2 CDs off eBay Windows XP 64 bit & 32 bit as I wasn't sure which was the one I might need. But the were being sold as disks for this... Read more

A:lsass.exe Access Denied a process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights

Windows XP has reached end of life 2 years ago... It is an insecure Operating System and should no longer be used especially online.
The Dimension 2400 is weak hardware (Pentium 4 Processor, IDE hard drive, DDR RAM) from 2003! so 13 years old! Its not worthwhile running a modern Operating System on it and below minimum system requirements.
If on a budget you are best to buy a second hand OptiPlex 780 with a Windows 7 OEM license (which can be used for a free Windows 10 upgrade).

OS: Window 7 Home Edition

I tried restricting a secondary drive on my home computer for a particular user. I set up a new user account and then RC on the D: drive > properties > security tab. There was an Administrator account and a User account. I selected the Users account and hit Edit, then selected Deny checkbox for 'Full control'

When I log in now as Administrator, I also get Access Denied. When I RC on the D: drive and go to Properties there is no security tab.

Here is what I tried so far:

Set up a Symbolic Link on the C: drive pointing to the D: drive. But I still get Access Denied.

I tried to take ownership as Admin using CMD line: > takeown /F D:\ /R but again Access Denied

Set up another Administrator account, logged into it but it also gets Access Denied.

I searched on the forums but all the answers given are about resetting the permissions via the security tab.

Any ideas on how to get access to the D: drive again?

A:Access Denied - no Security tab

You can try resetting permissions to defaults, using ICACLS.

Or you could try resetting by using Windows Repair Tool.

I don't vouch for either attempt, just noting that some believe that each may work.

I've been pulling my hair out over this issue, or should I say, these issues.
Firstly, a a minor issue. When I try to rename folders, or delete folders on my 2nd drive D, windows 7 keeps asking for admin permission. Why? How can I stop it from happening? I am the admin. I've tried taking ownership, granted full access. Still it wont stop asking.

But perhaps the most annoying issue. I was trying to modify my hosts file and no matter what guide I follow, I cant save the hosts file. Always access denied.
I've done the following:

Gave myself full permissions in the security tab.
Make sure I was one of the owners.
Run notepad as admin.

And still I can't save it. I know all this security is for my protection, but when I install Win7 with only one account, the admins, I should'nt have to jump through hoops to delete things.

Any ideas?

Hi,

We have a network with 10 desktop PC's all running win7 pro and a server running sbs2003. We have had an on going problem where permissions are stripped from the server for all users so we get 'access denied' messages when trying to access the shared drive.

Our IT support company couldn't get to the bottom of the problem but seemed to resolve it by copying the data to another location and setting up the permissions to the new location. Two weeks pass with no problem then it re-occurs, except this time the permissions are still in place but the are two deny rules in the security settings tab, 1: Deny administrators 2: Deny users.

These were deleted and all users could then access the shared drive once more, however, this is where the nightmare begins...

The PC which first manifested the access denied message cannot access its own c: drive, getting the same access denied message. It is possible to open files on this drive through shortcuts, but you can't view it through a file explorer etc. We then tried to look at changing user settings/permissions/security setting, but these are all denied, as is system restore.

Then this exact problem occured on another two PCs!

We have run countless spyware/antivirus programs, Malware bytes, spybot, eset, all machines and drives come back clean.

Logging on in safe mode as a network administrator or a local admin makes no difference. We can essentially do nothing to try to rectify the problem as no account seems to have permissio... Read more

Has anyone run chkdsk on any of these drives?
It does sound as if the security descriptors are in some way getting affected.
I am not sure if this can in some way be transferable to the client machines, it would depend on your topology.
But in the case of the share drive, if the file permissions and security descriptors become corrupt, the situation will manifest itself into a bigger issue. It would also seem to explain why the creation of the new share disk worked for some time, until it too became corrupt.

Here is a link to the different abilities that chkdsk offers.

I transfer the customers info from their OLD pc (windows 7 in one instance... windows vista in another)
After transfer the data IS accessible.  After reboot the data IS accessible...  after a few days "access denied" error. (permissions error)

I can move the same file to another location (folder) other than "documents" and the file will open fine.
I can transfer ALL The files to that location and the files will open fine.
IF I "move" the documents folder to the new location... after a day.... access denied (permissions error)
I am not doing anything that I haven't done over the last 10 years,... VERY FRUSTRATING.  I believe it is a windows update of some sort that is causing the problem but cannot pin it down.

Hi, All.

I've got an interesting situation that I'm hoping can be resolved. I built a server using FreeNAS 8.2 to store family pictures, videos, music, and Windows backups. In my home we have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and Windows 7 Professional 64bit. The server is setup with 3 Windows (CIFS) Shares. One share for each of the two computers and then a common share for multimedia. The user accounts on the NAS belong to the common group "family." The Multimedia share has ownership (user:group) of root:family. The permissions on the directories in the Multimedia share are read/write/execute for owner, read/write/execute for group, and read/execute for everyone else (or 0775 in the *nix world). Sorry for the long setup explanation.

Anyway, on my computer (Professional) and my wife's computer (Home Premium), I see the shares in Windows Explorer | Network. I am able to access the shares, and the first time I accessed, I was prompted to enter user credentials, which I did along with checking the box to have the credentials remembered. So, now, when I access the shares in Windows Explorer, I have immediate access. I can read, write, delete, whatever through Windows Explorer.

On my computer, I was able to easily transfer my iTunes library to the Multimedia share through the iTunes application, and iTunes now sees all of my iTunes media from the NAS, rather than local. On my wife's computer, I am having a problem with pictures. I was able to easily move all of the 4.8 GB... Read more

Norton/Symantec, in its ever-ibimitable wisdom installs its Internet Security and Utilities packages into a locked folder(s). By locked I mean that one CANNOT modify (Rename, Delete, etc) the installed folder(s) and any of its sub-objects. I AM an administrator user, so I SHOULD (expect to) have such ability. Rather, I am issued Access Denied errors when attempting any form of modification of the folder(s) and/or its sub-objects. When attempting to change access security on the folder (modifying Administrator's access rules) I am again denied access...stupid. Can't get there from here!!!!

What does one do to overcome this most annoying impediment? I'm assuming that it would be through acces of the Local Security Policy function.

Probably some negative comment is due Microsoft for its clumsy implementation of security and the difficulty(s) trying to manage it, resulting in utter frustration.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I just bought an HP Prodesk for the office with windows 7.  Whenever I try anything external (camera, hard drive, flipcam)
I get the same series of errors.

First it says I don't have rights to view it and I need to click on the "security tab" to give myself access.

Only catch, there is no security tab....(see attached photo).

I did follow the steps here  to make sure I had the tab on and it does appear on regular
folders, just not on external drives.
Any suggestions?  I'd love to be able to access my external files without having to turn on another computer!

THANK YOU!!

I take it these devices worked on an older computer? Can they connect to another Windows 7 PC?

It could be a case of not having up to date drivers for these devices, even though the computer is new (it does happen): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-driver-hardware-isnt-working-properly#update-driver-hardware-isnt-working-properly=windows-7

I notice the drive in question is formatted using FAT32. You may have to go to disk management, and assign a drive letter to it manually: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/i-want-to-acess-my-fat32-usb-drive/cd9d000c-82bf-4fe0-b590-f7597c46cc9e

If those don't work, and if you're comfortable using the command prompt, you can try running the takeown command on the drives in question. In this case, try opening a command prompt by typing cmd into the search bar, right click and choose Run as administrator, then follow the steps:

takeown  /f   DriveLetter:\   /a   /r   /d y

Then, type

icacls DriveLetter:\  /t /c /grant administrators:F  System:F  everyone:F

Hi,

I downloaded security essentials after discovering some malware on my computer from the "Anit-virus 2010" software scam. When I try to start the MSE program, I receive an error message saying "access denied". I had heard that some malware can affect the permission to run programs that are known to detect them. Please help, as my computer currently has no security program up and running.

Thanks,

I have a folder that has save files from a game I play, and I want to put them into Dropbox to be able to send them to a friend so he can see some of my saves.
The problem is that the folder wouldn't let me move it to my desktop because I apparently didn't have permission, so I Googled.  I changed the security settings to add "Everyone" with full access to the list of users, selected it, and that allowed me to move it to desktop.
When putting it into Dropbox, it tells me that I don't have permission to move some of the files in the folder (but not all?).  So I tell it to skip them, but some of them are exactly what my friend wants to see.  When changing permissions on them or the folder to "Everyone" as I did earlier it just automatically changes the user back to administrator and removes "everyone" from the list.  Trying to delete the files that did get copied that I apparently had access to first are now doing the same thing and the folder is stuck constantly trying to reupload itself over and over.  I can neither move, delete, rename, or change security settings for any of it, while I could and did in order to move it in the first place.  It just keeps defaulting back to needing administrator.

I /am/ the administrator, on the admin account, and the folder is set to all access, but won't let me do anything with it, and keeps removing security options when I try to change them.

See if enabling the hidden Administrator (Super User) account will let you move the files. Make sure you also close the Dropbox client if you use that.

Press the Windows key + X and select CMD (as admin). Type the following.

net user administrator /active:yes

I am trying to fix my son's netbook (Honest this is not mine). He has been using LimeWire, which I have now removed, and I can only assume this is the source of his problems.

This is not the first time he has had viruses but I have been able to sort out the others. However the current batch are too hard for me to solve altough it is behaving better than it was when he first gave it to me.

The symtoms are

1) Cannot start Microsoft Security Essentials - It fails with a popup Access is denied......Error Code 08x8007005
2) When clicking on Google Search Results it takes you to various websites but not the one in the hit. This can easily be overriden by clicking the URL Address bar and sending.
3) I have installed a few Virus Detection tools- these work for a while but then fail "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not may have the approroate permissions to access them.

There may be other issues but these are the ones that I have found so far.

Thanks

I haven't checked to see where else I'm denied entry but this one area is enough to give me concern. When I shut Zone Alarm down, accessiblity returns to normal. I have checked the default security settings and they seems perfectly normal and reasonable. I am familiar with Zone Alarm Pro, having used it on another computer with no problems, whatsoever. However, this is my first experience with Zone Alarm Security Suite. Any suggestions? I am running XP Pro.

Hello,

I'm visiting a family member in Russia whose computer seems to have several Trojans, as well as a large number of adware and malware programs installed.

I first tried installing malwarebytes but the installation instantly stops and tells me that it cannot create a temp file as access is denied.

This happens with every security program I've tried to install.

This also happens in safe mode.

When I tried running TDSSKiller, nothing happened. No windows opened.

When I tried running ESET online scanner, it tells me I'm not connected to the Internet.

HitmanPro shows the following:

After the free 30 day trial activation, I am not able to run HitmanPro to remove those threats. It's stuck on the activation page and says it's not activated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Changing setting Security on root folder returns access is denied for some sub-folders.

I have an external HHD assigned with 'G' driver letter under my Computer. I have removed 'everyone' from the 'Groups and user names' on the root folder by choosing 'security tab' from the property options of root folder for that HDD, and while applying changes, 'access is 'denied' was shown to me for some subfolders, although when I added 'everyone' on that root drive folder, I have added 'everyone' in the Group or user names by choosing 'security tab' from the property options of root folder for that HDD, and I've taken ownership as ''administrators" under the current owner for that root folder. While applying new settings of removing 'everyone', whenever I have faced 'access is denied', I have clicked on 'continue'. Then, I ended up with no one taken access to this root folder.

These some screen shots show the subfolders I have faced 'access is denied' with.

After that, I have re- added 'everyone' on the same root folder, and the same thing happened while applying the new settings.

These some screen shots show the subfolders I have faced 'access is denied' with.

However, after the settings of adding 'everyone' on that root folder has completed, then whenever I open a subfolder, then I was still faced with 'message'.

Whenever I have clicked on 'continue', when faced this message.

Hi,

I would be honoured to have some assistance regarding a possible infection on my computer.

Unfortunately, I believe my computer has been infected with a possible Rootkit\Backdoor Trojan Virus, which has disabled both Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. When attempting to launch Windows Defender & MSE, I receive an error regarding: "Specified location path not found". I decided to look into the directory of both WD (%WINDIR%Program Files\Windows Defender) and MSE (%WINDIR%Program Files\Microsoft Security Client) and some of the icons have changed to shortcuts that point directly to "C:\Windows\system32\config." Even as an Administrator,  I'm unable to make even add write permissions to the folder as my access is denied.

I was able to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials but my Windows Defender will not launch. My issue is practically identical to the following topic in this forum:

Would anyone be able to assist me in this issue? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I was infected with the Security Check virus. Before I went on line and found the instructions for removing this virus I Restored to a previous version from 12/30 (2 months ago). This seemed to do the trick. All many of my files could now be seen. Some were still hidden so I ran unhide and that fixed that problem. I tried following the removal instructions for Security Check. I ran RKILL and there were no services stopped. I ran Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and it didn't find anything either. I am still having 2 problems:

1. It looks like all my files are Read Only, even when I create a new file it is Read Only

2. I'm getting an error trying to open several files (mostly in the Documents and Settings and Users folders). The folders getting the error all have a square with and arrow in the left hand corner (like they are shortcuts?). When I try to open them I get and an error that Access is Denied, however, I can get to these folders from within applications, just not Windows Explorer.

I'm not sure what to do next. If anyone has ideas I will be forever grateful. Thanks!

Joanne

If you have an undamaged restore point from before the infection, try restoring it. It will restore your registry, which is probably where the corruption is.

I was recently at my friend's business and they have a really scary scenario. First they are setup in a workgroup, not domain on XP. They share files not only through explorer but through programs like Quicken, Word, etc.

Normally there are 3 users on their businesses wireless network sharing files, such as financial data, personal information, and other extremely confidential stuff. Recently as an effect of the hurricane, they had many 'students' move into the location since they were all displaced. There are now 25 different users connected wirelessly, and they are all capable of viewing, modifying, deleting this confidential information.

I suggested encrypting the wireless network, blocking off access to the students, but they have had threats from students saying they will leave if they can't get online to do their studies. The company can't really afford that, and have already had some people reset the router physically. Still, that wouldn't solve the serious security issue here...

I thought about creating password protected folders, but for some reason I can't set that up in their XP.

I am capable of making a hidden share (after turning off simple file sharing), but whenever I mapped it on the other computers and tried to access it, I got the "Access Denied". However, regular shares such as the information we're trying to secure from everyone else opens up fine.

There must be some way to totally secure this financi... Read more

Hello. I have a folder share on my Windows 7 computer and I was trying to access it with a Windows XP Home computer in the house. However, I kept getting an "Access Denied" error whenever I tried to write to the folder. How can I fix this?

Also, sometimes when accessing .zip files and .exe fines from one XP Home computer to another XP Home computer, I get a "Unspecified security risk" and "Access denied" error respectively. How do I fix this?

A:Access Denied error when trying access Windows 7 folder from Windows XP

multiple levels of controls here

the XP needs the LLTP service from SP3 to be able to share w/ win7

there are two layers of access for share resources:

the network access
the NTFS access
The simplest solution is to use Simple Sharing and share via the All Users\Shared Documents\ directory. The Admin can set Allow Modifications (or not as needed),
which create the NTFS perms for the <Everyone> group.

So, *IF* you have network access (you can see the shared folder and it's contents),
then the NTFS permissions are the controlling factor.

IF not, the the network access is in control and you need to figure out Simple Sharing vs not-so-simple and those requirements

I've looked for an answer to this challenge but so far the best I can do is joono's posting of 13 July 2006 http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/482888-installing-xp-service-pack2.html?highlight=joono that ended in the conclusion that the offending copy of XP was pirated.
