LED on mobo flickers, sometimes on solid

Q: LED on mobo flickers, sometimes on solid

I'm putting together a PC from old parts. I'm using an ASUS PS800 mobo and a 300W power supply. When I 1st got it hooked up, the PC wouldn't turn on. I looked inside the case and noted that the green LED (which indicates when the computer is getting power) was flickering at a steady rate, and wasn't very bright. The cord into the PS was in tight, and the PS connections to the mobo were tight too. So I used a power supply tester on the PS, and it checked good. I plugged it back into the mobo, the green LED was bright and solid, and the computer booted up and ran fine for a couple of hours. It ran fine the next day too.

The day after than, I moved it into another room. Same problem -- the green LED flickered and wasn't very bright. This time I tried a different power cord, but no difference. Hooked up the PS tester, it tested good, plugged the PS back into the mobo, and everything works fine again.

The mobo came out of a working computer. The PS came out of a computer w/ a bad mobo, and again, the PS always tests good. Could the mobo be grounding against the case? I looked at that, but I didn't see any clearance issues. And it runs fine for long periods of time. What else should I check?

Preferred Solution: LED on mobo flickers, sometimes on solid

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just got an Asus M4A785-M mobo because my original mobo fried which is now being RMA'd back to Asus so they can send me a new one. However, the mobo I now have installed fine (i didnt reformat my HD when i installed this new mobo) but after trying new and old drivers, ALL windows updates and soooo much more, my desktop screen flickers and flashes especially when I move my mouse around and when I hover over my quicklaunch icons, and folders etc.., they disappear then reappear sometimes.

What I just found out online was this link ATI CrossFireX which talks about the Hybrid CrossfireX. This mobo has that and I think that is whats causing this flickering stuff to happen. I'm looking for a way to disable all onboard video (HDMI and VGA) so that it might fix the issue. Or, if there's a way to "enable" this Hybrid CrossfireX and have it actually work correctly with my video card. It states on that website in the link I posted above that it's compatible only with windows vista pc's..?!??! Could this be the issue? Because I run Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, but ON the mobo box it says "windows 7 ready" so I'm really wanting this to be fixed because I'm about to reformat and I'd rather not.

Please post any help if you can.

A:just got new mobo but the screen flickers/flashes....

I'd start with disabling CrossFireX and see if this solves the problem, I don't think it will though. Once you establish it has/has not resolved then post your results here. There is no reason whatsoever to reformat your hard drive so don't do this, it is more than likely a tweak in your BIOS or perhaps a little work with your ATi drivers but this issue is fixable.

rite now i got

E6750 @ 3.2ghz

EVGA nForce 680i SE SLI 775 TR

OCZ Reaper memory PC6400

WD Raptor 150 gig WD caviar 400gig

EVGA 8800GT Superclocked

the problem is where i live we have bad power service. the power usually goes out once a month and that has fried 3 boards already. but since evga has a good warranty ive been able so send them in for an replacement.

i was not thinking i forgot to remove my chip set fan from my last replacement so i got no chip set fan and it runs at like 70c.

3 days ago i got my new zalman fan and i was having difficulty installing it cause there were some stupid heat sinks in the way but i got it in with no real problem.
i bumped some of the capacitors and when i went to restart my computer would start for a millisecond then shut off. i guess it was shorting out so i wiggled the capacitors and now it boots up fine...

so ive been looking at the EVGA 750i and i was wondering what is the difference in solid capacitors and normal ones?

i need to be able to sli cause im getting another 8800GT in a cupple days.

A:Need help choosing a new Mobo and what are solid capacitors?

Solid capacitors are a newer new, advanced design. Solid capacitors and electrolytic capacitors both store electricity then discharge it as needed.

What separates them is that solid capacitors contain a solid organic polymer, while electrolytic capacitors use a common liquid electrolyte. This results in the names sold, vs "normal" or electrolytic capacitors.

Solid capacitors are much more expensive, but the prices are going down. The meaningful difference is that they last anywhere from1.25 times longer on up to 6.5 times longer... depending, of course, on the temperatures existing on the motherboard... but one should expect solid capacitors to last about 25 years... or longer... which of course is meaningless, because the boards will be antique by that time.

Yes, in my opinion, they are better... substantially better... but I doubt you will be a able to detect difference in performance of two boards of the same new age.

Because there is no detectable difference, and the cost is much greater, most boards are still using Electrolytic capacitors... due to price.

However, this is changing rapidly as board assembly lines are changed over to handle the install of the solid capacitors.

Putting together a build for a friend, however, I believe the motherboard may have been damaged or was damaged upon my taking part in the build. I assembled the parts, a 430w thermaltake psu, an asus mobo, e5200 intel processor, western digital hard drive, 2 gigs of GSkill, ati hd 4850 gpu and an LG dvd drive.

Posted, gave an error message about cpu fan error, I google it, it seemed to be relatively harmless. While in the bios the computer's signal disappeared, I attempted a reboot to no avail. No error codes, cpu fan stopped spinning. Removed memory, no error code, removed 4850, no error code, case fan connected to the motherboard spins when powered on, motherboard shows green light, no signal detected,

I tested the processor in another rig, and it worked fine, and the cpu fan spun fine. Tested another power supply with said motherboard and the motherboard fan would not spin and it would not post, and no error codes. Is my motherboard dead? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This problem has the configuration listed in my system specs below, which have just changed recently. My OCZ Vertex 2 died, RMA'ed but sold, and replaced with the Transcend SSD720, 2.5" SATAIII 64GB. Also sold my GPU...

Now, trying to get everything back on track. I reinstalled my OS on the SSD, but I can't for the life of me get the HDMI working. When reinstalling, I knew it was normal for only my Dell CRT to show up via its VGA connection, but then the main ViewSonic HD monitor never came on. I finally realized it wasn't responding to anything. The ViewSonic HD monitor is the only thing plugged in right now, on both VGA & HDMI, but will only work on the VGA. It had been working fine before the OCZ SSD died. No VGA problems. The onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250 is fully updated and all the drivers are installed and updated to the best of my knowledge. There is an update for the BIOS on the ASUS website that I had never installed, ever, but the only change from before was the SSD so that should not matter. I've even made sure I installed the specific driver for the monitor from the disc it came with. I tried playing around in BIOS, and (for once) no matter what graphics device order I set, (i.e., IGPX-PCI-GPX-etc) it always reverted to the mobo's VGA. And obviously, Device Manager is showing no yellow question marks and is generally no help right now...

Again, there is NO longer a standalone GPU/video card in this system, just the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3's onboard inter... Read more

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a X121e and recall it being extremely easy to configure on Lenovo's site. So I decided to look at the X270. However, having had great difficulty even starting to configure it (apparently, Lenovo does not favour Firefox any longer), I'm currently having trouble understanding the choices. The first is the choice between PCIe and SATA PointingDevice. Following some discussion, I gather this has nothing to do with any kind of pointing device, but affects my HDD/SSD choices. OK, so let's see what the PCIe choices give me. I get 5 'first hard drive' options. (Nothing I do gets me a 'second hard drive' option, so not sure about this. Or rather, I almost understand this now I've read the platform specification, the user manual, the hardware maintenance manual and various posts on Reddit. Lenovo do like to make buying a challenge!) Now, however, I've reached the end of my google-fu. Intel 256 GB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe256 GB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 - CapableIntel 512 GB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe512 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.01 TB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMeI understand the difference beween 1/2 and 3/4 and 5 is obviously size. The above link is to the HP specs for the machine. The mobo is overheating and yes, i've done all the reg maint stuff. Let's call it dead, bury it and buy a new bride. I did upgrade the video and sound last year but those devices should be good for a few more yrs. This pc is strictly for gaming, music and my embroidery machine software.

I have never replaced a motherboard (nor cpu) before though I've done all else. My concern is that in my eagerness to get this girl back up an running, I overshoot and choose a board that won't support the current devices. I'd love to replace the cpu right now too, but w/ 2 bdays and christmas coming, I can't afford it.

So help me, geniuses. What motherboards would support the pos Pentium D 820 (S) DC 2.8 GHz socket 775, but still allow me to celebrate my 42nd birthday with a new cpu (a quad? ohh ahhh) next april? I have searched and searched, and it's probably staring me in the face, but I can't figure out the mobos.

I'm guessing some of these would work, but again, brain doesn't work as well as it should and I just cant figure it out. http://techreport.com/articles.x/8666/1

Hi all,

I have a MSI k7 pro via kt 266a mobo with an athlon xp1600, served me well, however time has moved on.
1/ MSIs website states the max cpu my mobo can take is xp2100 (upgradeing cpu would be cheapest option). Does anyone know any different?

2/ There are some good "bargains" in mobos, as low as 80 bucks Australian, able to take an AMD 64 3200 , based on SIs chipsets. Of the chipsets available, eg, Sis , Via , nforce, are folk noticing any "real world" difference between them.

I occasionally edit and render video-rendering times not a key consideration and occasionally play Lomac and Il2 flight sims. Thats it. Apart from surf the net.

Your input appreciated. Thanks

Howdy, I'm at my wits end here, and I was hoping one of you could point me in the direction of something else to try.

Working on friend's 2003ish eMachine (ick), because his motherboard chipset heatsink fell off. Used some thermal adhesive to stick the sucker back on, but when i hit the power button, nothing happens. However the motherboard led is on. So I pop in another working PSU that I had laying around, with the same thing happening.

At this point I figure the motherboard got fried, and ordered a no name gateway oem motherboard. I throw it in, and have the exact same issue. I try shorting the power pins to see if it was my power switch, and nada.

It might be that the processor was killed, but wouldn't the psu fan start up in that case? Or I ordered a dud motherboard with the same symptoms?

At this point I'm just not sure what step to take to resolve the problem. Any advice?

A:New Mobo LED green, PSU/Mobo fans won't spin

Run the motherboard outside the case with just CPU and memory installed. See if it starts. If not, the CPU could be fried or you have a defective motherboard. I hope you didn't use the old power supply with the replacement motherboard, if you did, you probably fried the 2nd motherboard

I am trying to put together a Server running for my home.

I have a two computers running socket 939 MOBOS and CPUs. I have enough pieces to put together another computer

Graphic card

Besides this old gear I have a special server case and RAID card. I tried to get the computer set up a while back and got errors from the MOBO. I made a half attempt to work it out but do not have the time or patience. I figured I would just buy another inexpensive 939 mobo and get it going. Based on the prices I am seeing for this mobo it has turned into a collectors item and worth more now than when they were cutting edge.

Should I just suck it up and pay $150 for a old MOBO or should I upgrade my home theater PC to a newer MOBO, with new Ram and CPU then take that mobo for the Server? That computer runs fine now with a 3800+ CPU, but a newer socket would allow me options for the future without paying a premium for old school technology. If you suggest a newer MOBO, I would appreciate suggestions on which MOBO and CPU for a Micro ATX case good for a HTPC.

BTW I am on the road more than at home so most of my work is done on a newer laptop.

A:Socket 939 Mobo or purchase a newer Mobo

You can do mobo/ 2GB RAM and a X2 AM2 for around $150, I would go that route.

an unknown AMD mobo to a DFI PS85-BL ver B1 mobo

I will be using 512 mb ddr 400 pc3200 kingston ram

I already called DFI and they said that I need to unistall the system drivers. Of course, I tried uninstalling all device drivers and then shut down and rebuilt computer. When I booted, the computer asked for safe mode or boot normally. No matter what I select, it automatically reboots.

Any ideas, instructions, or definite fixes?

I have read several posts about issues with this already.

I had an ECS P4M800 Pro-M V 2.0 with a Pentium 4 2.88. I had a primary and secondary hard drive as well as a DVD RW on it. My brother-in-law originally build the computer some years ago. I got the dreaded call the other day, "Honey, the computer won't turn on."

DOA, fried MOBO. I ordered a Biostar A880 G + MOBO with integrated graphics, audio and LAN cards. Popped in an AMD Athlon 2 X 3 3.3G and two DDR 3 2G Ram sticks.

Fired that puppy up on my old hard drive. It ran through some system checks, and nada. I keep getting back to nothing.

I had a system backup set up to run, but the destination drive ended up being full, (without my realizing it) and now I'm up shit creek becuase the drive won't boot. I've got some important business stuff on that drive, which I know I can recover, but I would just like it to get up and run.

I have the install CD and it is a direct from Microsoft CD. Nothing specific to the old MOBO. What to do???? This was supposed to be my swan song. New computer and I was going to be rocking it out! zilcho.... Please help me out.

Hi all, I am having a problem with IE ever since I installed a new platform for work (self-employed med.trans.). They told me I need to downgrade IE8 to IE7 and install the platform. IE would not open after that, it would just flicker like it wants to open, but never did. I had their tech guy go in it and he supposedly fixed it, and claims IE was working when he got out of it. It still does not work, though.

He recommended we take it for a professional clean-up as we have "serious Windows and Explorer issues." We took it in, got it back, and IE is still doing the same thing. The platform I had installed for work got wiped out when we tried different things to get IE working again.

My husband went in and uninstalled/reinstalled many things, including Windows Service Pack 3, as the Microsoft website told him to do that. Nothing is working. Sometimes, upon restart, it also takes forever for the desktop items to show, and the icons on the taskbar are also often missing, all we see is the Antivirus Symbol. We have to reboot, and they show (if they feel like it)

Now, when right-clicking on IE, it shows this message "The ordinal 455 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll."

I am desperate at this point and don't know what else to do. Please, any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Hey everybody. Recently, about a month ago my monitor backlight began to flicker and would sometimes just stay dark for a long time. If you shine a light to the screen during one of these "episodes" you can faintly see a display. So I figured at the time that it was a monitor issue and since it was pretty old anyway I bought a new one off Amazon, but now this one is having the same exact problem! The backlight will either flicker continually, go black completely or go black for 2 seconds and come back. Sometimes it won't do this and work properly until I shut the computer off, but the problem will resume when I start it back up.

I've had the same problem with two different monitors and used two different cables. I checked the inside of the computer for loose cables and such. I seriously have no idea what's going on. Right now it's working fine, but this morning was flickering like crazy. Is this a graphics card problem? I do remember when this all started that I accidentally bumped against the tower with my knee, possibly making something loose inside.

It just seems weird to me that a graphics card would have anything to do with a monitor back light.

If you mean the Power Supply built into the monitor, that could possibly be it. The computer's PSU has nothing to do with the monitor itself. I've had monitors do what you describe and it was the monitor power brick (or internal power) which was usually the culprit. Being brand new, I'd look into an exchange. Before doing that I would hook it up to another computer. If it does the same thing you will be sure it's something to do with the monitor.

My monitor flickers on and off. It happens most often when I turn on my pc. It also does it when I'm surfing the net and reading my mail. It doesn't do it when my kids are playing games. Sometimes...when I first boot up....it will flicker so much that the screen will come back distorted and freeze up. Sometimes it will also put the monitor into sleep mode if it stays off for more than a couple seconds. Then it suddenly flicks back on.
I have replaced the monitor with a spare...and it still did it. So it's not my monitor. I'm thinking it may be my power supply? I'm running Windows XP....and my pc is only 1 year old.
When my computer has been on for awhile....this problem seems to stop. For the last 3 days I haven't turned my pc off....and it hasn't flickered. But I know if I reboot....it will.

    Any ideas? Thank you

A beta version is a 'test' version and is very likely to have bugs. Unless you actually enjoy problems, I strongly suggest that you avoid 'Beta' software.

Recently installed well known financial program -- screen flickers when entering data. Not sure where to post question -- here or in video card section. Have WindowsXP -- video card -- 128mb DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX graphics with TV out and DVI. Only program that does this. Have tried decreasing hardware acceleration at suggestion of program company -- no better. Am getting a 'flicker' headache when using this program.

Hi, I got my XPS 15 9560 4K laptop just two weeks ago and the monitor flickers. It does not happen too many times. However, in several cases, the monitor turned black for 2-3 seconds. I called Dell and the representative suggested me to change the graphic card (motherboard?). I accepted that but now I am not sure that I should do it or not for a laptop that I used for only two weeks. After I talk to her, I found, via this forum, that there are many others who have the same issue. She said that they will send a technician to do it. So my question is that should I do it or not? I am highly skeptic about it. Also is there a return option? There is also another issue with the keyboard. When I use the keyboard, I hear some squeaky noise. It happens every time that I use it. However, my main concern is the flickering issue.I love the laptop, but these issues are totally unacceptable for a 2k+ laptop.

I have a one year old ViewSonic VA1912wb lcd monitor. It's been working great but the last couple of days I've been getting some flickering now and then - especially while playing Scrabble. I looked into upping the refresh rate, but it's locked in at 60 Hertz and can't be changed - no options available. Screen resolution is 1440 x 900. Any ideas on what's going on?

Hey everyone, thanks for caring about others problems, appreciate it...

But anyways I have a Samsung SyncMaster 204B... really nice monitor and it has worked awesome for the year that I have had it. But well recently it's started having little problems and they are slowly getting worse. at first the monitor would just randomly "restart itself" and it wasn't too big of a problem, but after a while whenever I would turn it on after it being off for a while, it would flicker for a few seconds and was a little dim, then it would work itself out and be fine. Today it was a lot worse with the monitor flickering as well as flashing on and off... I'm sure monitors aren't easily repaired. I'm wondering what could be causing this. I know it is newish technology and that they only last about 5 years (true?) but I really don't think i should be seeing problems like this so soon. Anyways thanks for any help!

When I hover the mouse along the task bar, the windows all show for a moment then go away. It will be working fine and then thhis problem happens, and makes it hard to work as I have a lot of stuff going on, so each program will probably have 3-4 windows each. And there is no time to get the mouse up on the windows n click to get them to open.

What is also very werd is that it started to behave again, it just went away when I closed a "help" window. And is working again.

This is very frustrating, anyone know why this happens?

First, I would like to identify my OS, CPU, memory, Graphics card and HD and SATA drives to better assist the responders to my thread in helping discover my problem(s).

My Operating System is Windows XP Pro (SP2), and I'm fully aware that this OS is no longer supported by Microsoft. But I do understand someone has come out with an SP3 patch for Windows XP.

My CPU is also rather ancient. It is an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz (socket A) processor. My memory is DD2. Capacity: 2.5Gig. My Graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 2200. I have one SATA (1)Terabyte drive, partitioned into two (2) drives, and one (1) HDD drive (F:\) as my main bookable drive.

Here is just one of the major issues that I have been experiencing. Each time I boot up my machine, I notice that the right and left sides of the screen, along with the Windows bar at the bottom of the screen flutters or appears to be unstable. This last about 10, maybe 15 minutes or more before stabilizing. I have checked my Graphics card by uninstalling the drivers and reloading them but this does not appear to resolve this issue.

My question: Could my Nvidia GeForce 2200 Graphics card be a bit too much for my system?

There is also other issues ( likely with my .NET Framework files). Several of the programs (i.e Malware and CCleaner do not work. I keep receiving error messages. But I will create another thread message referencing these issues.

This recently just happened today, but my monitor started flickering and it's gotten worse as the day went on. The monitor flickers between brightness. I've tried turning up the Refresh Rate and updating GPU driver, but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

    GPU: ATI Radeon X800

    Moniter: Samsung SyncMaster 915n

    Resolution: 1280x1024

    Refresh Rate: 75 Hertz

I know it's the monitor itself because when I used another monitor, it worked fine.

You said the problem clears when you reload the page? Just for the heck of it, does the same thing happen with all browsers? If you haven't tried, please do.
