Sidewinder Wheel Software in Windows 7

Q: Sidewinder Wheel Software in Windows 7

Im having some trouble with my steering wheel, or more particularly its control software, in Windows 7.

First i should point out that the wheel works in games, i can control a car with it and all that. The problem i am having is specifically with the Software that comes with the wheel that allows you to map commands to the buttons, adjust force feedback, sensitivities/deadzone and return to centre tension and load schemes for specific games.

In essence, my wheel is stuck on max settings for return to centre and force feedback which is all very entertaining for things like Monster Truck Madness but not so for more advanced simulations, where personally i have Force Feedback and Return to Centre very low (i.e. about 10%). The only way to change it is via the software (as far as i know) which i cant access. There are Force Feedback settings in games but these are on top of the setting in the software, so have very little effect, if any.

My exact problem is;

Having installed software (installation went fine!), right click logo and click 'Open Sidewinder Central'. From there i can open Game Controllers where you get the standard window displaying all the different controllers. I can get to here in Control Panel also but a different window opens to control the wheel with no FF etc options. I now highlight the wheel and click Properties, where i get this message;

The software has been reinstalled a fair few times with everything seemingly going smoothly. Ive tried setting the software to run in Windows 98 mode (there are only 2 exe's in the install folder, im not convinced that is actually the software though!) as it was originally designed for that but still nothing.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Anyone know where i can download the latest driver for the Microsoft Sidewinder steering wheel, if there is one?! Note that my version is not Force Feedback as i have come across drivers entitled Control 4.0 or something similar.

My problem is that the brake pedal is not recognised. Upon purchasing NFS Most Wanted (PC), the in-game controller setup will only recognise the accelerator pedal. I've been told that it's because this wheel only supports 1 axis but was wondering if there was a work-around?

Thanks in advance!

I just want to throw this out here because I had issues with finding drivers and software for the SideWinder Racing Wheel. It also took me some time to find any info about its compatibility with Windows 7 and all I found was some articles claiming that it was compatible and some that said the exact opposite.
Thanks to how hard it is to find any details about the set I have decided to compile a list of all the games that actually supports it. The wheel is compatible with Windows 7 (x64) but the issues is in the games not recognizing it. So far I haven't got to test that many games..in fact I have only tested one game properly and confirmed that it works but I'll get busy over the weekends.
It's worth mentioning that Windows 7 installed some default drivers but I had to install the software to actually be able to use the wheel in-game...even tho the software itself isn't usable and it's made for Win98. I can share the setup files too, just send me a message and we will figure out how to do it (mail, dropbox or some other way).

I have listed some of the games that I have got on some drm and as hard copy's (CD/DVD) but if you want me to test more games then please comment below or throw me a line on Steam.

The list can be found here (scroll down).

my computer wont recognize when i push on the scroll wheel. the scrolling works fine but when i push it nothing happens, for example when trying to 'auto-scroll' or in any game that has an action assigned to that button.

is this an issue with a driver or the hardware itself. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that didn't fix it. i cant think of anything else to do.
any suggestions?

First thing I would have suggested you have already done: Uninstall and then reinstall.

Do they have any updated drivers? If so try that and if that doesn't work then you may correct in your suspicion that this is a hardware issue.

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X8 Mouse, I love it for the most part. The scroll wheel is frustrating me at the moment, when I roll it it is not very smooth, this doesnt really bother me, the issue is when I scroll down a web page etc the smallest movement on the wheel scrolls down most of the page. I have tried updating the software and have played with the settings but cant seem to work it out.
Does anyone else have an X8 or any ideas what could be causing it?

I still have my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback peripherals (joystick and wheel). Both are the later USB revisions. They worked to perfection on Windows 7 (just plug and play) but do they work/get recognised by Windows 10?

The way my machine is setup it will be quite an undertaking running the wires etc in and around the desktop and cramped desk space so I'd like to be confident they would still work

does anyone still use these peripherals or similar types? I found it dissapointing MS turned its back on the sidewinder products. Have never been able to get to grips with game pads really. Playing a driving game or flight sim with a game pad just feels unnatural.

If it worked on 7, it likely will work in 10, you may have to reinstall drivers, but in all likely hood the upgrade should be fine.

Force Feedback loses some effects with default driver supplied with vista ultimate 32bit after roughly 2+ effects are applied at once. (it happens in multiple racing games)  I have noticed that it shows steer Left/Right and accelerate as X/Y axis but brake is listed as Z axis.  Shouldn't force feedback be tagged as Z axis?  I have tested the controller with xp and the same games and the controller works fine with the default xp driver.  Sidewinder software wont install on vista so i can't load any different drivers to check if this is the issue.  Note: In the default xp driver it lists left/right/brake/accel. as x/y and z as feedback.  Any ideas?

Hi everyone.

"...some threads I've seen have recommended software solutions to get Force Feedback working. Try PPJoy or GlovePIE and let me know if either one helps."

I plug mine in and it doesn't do anything. At first it brought up the autorun from the disc and that just gives an error message saying "The version of this file isn't compatibile with the version of windows you are using..." But above he said it installed... what was the difference?

"I was able to calibrate my USB force feedback wheel and it works fine..."

"this solution actually worked for me. running in compability mode for xp service pack 2."

I have tried to run compatability mode but I can't find in the "D" drive properties. Where else would I look?

I could carry on, but can anyone help with a solution that works please?

I suggest you to install the XP driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
Follow these steps:
1. Right-click on the installation file and select properties.
2. Now click on the compatibility tab.
3. Under compatibility mode, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
4. From the drop down menu, select Windows XP(service pack 2).
5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Hi Guys,

I was going to go out and buy one of these joysticks the other day, when an acquaintance gave me one instead. They are, however, unsure whether or not they can find the software CD for this.

I have exhausted my search abilities, but can find nowhere on the net with a version of this software that has the Precision 2 in it. The best I have been able to find is version 3.2.

Any assistance in locating this software would be thankfully accepted, as it would be a shame to have to go out and but one of these things just for the software.

I'm reinstalling software and devices after a Windows 2000 re-install. I had saved the install file
of Intellipoint for my Wheel Mouse Optical, but now that I have it installed it is not as I
remember. There are two problems:

1. I can't seem to assign the wheel for all of the scrolling I had. I was able to scroll up and down by
turning the wheel, and I can do that now. Previously, though, if I held the wheel down I would get a little compass rose in the
center of the screen and could go in any direction by moving the cursor to the right or left or up or down, and it would vary the speed by how far the cursor was from the center.

2. I can't find the button that shuts off the pointer when typing, with a setting about how long to
wait before lighting up again.

I must have had something else and didn't save, or lost, the installation. There are lots of
choices available, but can anyone give me a little help by directing me to the particular one which does those
two things?

Thank you,

Need any software that will let me choose what sound to play when I scroll the mouse wheel, besides Autohotkey, help hugely appreciated

A:Software to play a sound when scrolling mouse wheel?

You know what?, I use StrokesPlus:
StrokesPlus - Free Mouse Gestures for Windows XP/Vista/7/8
I used before JustGestures:
Just Gestures - Mouse Gestures for Windows
But prefer Strokes over JustGestures, for the reason that StrokesPlus has a portable option, and I prefer it that way. Any of these programs let's you customize the entire mouse functionality. Now, about the sound, StrokesPlus it's more customizable than JustGestures, but it requires some knowledge of LUA scripting, so what you want may be accomplished (plus more mouse functions), but may be complicated. I don't know if this helps, but I recommend you these anyway.

Recently, a friend of mine let me borrow his old mouse, Microsoft Notebook Wireless 7000, since my old mouse just randomly stopped working, and fried itself. After plugging it in, I noticed that the sensitivity was extremely high, as well as the scroll wheel. The mouse had some firmware in it that had me install Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard or something, which by the way isn't even supported by the mouse itself. (Nice move Microsoft *slow clap*) I went into the normal mouse settings, like when you search up mouse in the search bar, and tried to change settings. Nothing happened, I tried high, low, no difference. Period. So, I went online and found drivers for it, or, more accurately, Windows Intellipoint. I installed the latest version, 8.2, and found that it managed for the mouse to fix everything that it was intended to, except one thing. It helped the sensitivity, and the bits and bobs of a computer mouse, but it only did half of the scroll-wheel's job. First off, I'm a big gamer if i do say so myself, and so, I went on various games including Magicite, Minecraft, and Garry's Mod, and I found that the scroll-wheel was changed, but when I went out of the game, it completely reset to it's hyper-fast mode when I went back in-game, even with my settings. I'd have to restart it, and re-apply the settings for the Mouse again to fix it. However, it WAS changed not in game, and was what to be expected on web-pages, and other non-game programs. Hello tech guy forums,

First I want to say I used to have an account here and the people of this forum walked me through all kinds of hardware/software problems in the past, so thank you!

This time around I suspect the culprit is hardware, but I want to start here in case it is a possible OS issue. Here's the gist:

One night I tripped over the 1/8 inch speaker cord that was plugged into it's corresponding jack. The tension was enough that the plug actually broke off in the jack and the laptop took a 3' spill onto the carpeted floor.

The next time I tried to start my laptop, it took me to an error screen saying Windows had suffered an error and was unable to start. It gave me the option to start normally or run the Windows repair tool, which I opted to try.

Running the repair tool that time and each time since has resulted in a black screen that says "Windows is loading files..." followed by a low-resoltion Windows OS background and a loading wheel next to the mouse cursor that spins without anything happening.

After several attempts, I downloaded a Win7 .iso and put it on a bootable USB drive. I changed boot priority in BIOS and started up. This time I get the same "Windows is loading files..." screen followed by an "Install Windows" dialog box that asks for the installation language, time format, etc.

When I click "next" and "install Windows" it takes me to a "Setup is starting..." screen with ... Read more

Hello WaterBottle and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have access to another machine you could try plugging your mouse in and see if it works. If it doesn't the mouse might need replacing.

You could also make sure your mouse has the latest driver. (Although these instructions were originally written for Vista they will also work for Windows 7.)

Ok heres the problem, I own a Compaq 6029us computer with a compaq mobo, built in sound/video/usb etc. I have a MS sidewinder dual strike(about a year old) and am running on Windows Home XP(compaq version). My last computer was built by me and I had no problems plugging in the joystick to the USB and Windows XP PRO would autodetect it. In fact It still works with my other system.
When I plug in the joystick on this computer I get nothing. When I go to add to my Game Controllers it says "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please see the Device Manager."
So in the device manager there is no gameport under sound, video, game controllers tab. I tried manually installing a gameport(standard, Ess, Neomagic etc.) and none of them work. I looked on MS for some drivers but MS claims that they are all built into windows. I tried looking for gameport drivers from Compaq(waste of time), I called compaq and asked them about this problem. They couldn't tell me how to install a gameport(though they said I should have one) and they told me it was a problem with the joystick and I would have to contact MS for help, which is not true because the joystick works fine on my other computer. I know its because there is no gameport/driver. But they couldn't get one to work and couldn't explain why . So that was a waste of time.

I'm trying to connect my MS Sidewinder Freestyle Pro to a USB port (it doesn't work on the joystick port).

In Device Manager it is listed under Human Interface Devices with a black exclamation mark on yellow triangle, and when I double-click it it says it couldn't load the device driver (code 2).

So when I click 'Update Driver' it finds one, and when I tell it to go ahead it prompts me to insert "Windows 98 Second Edition CD-Rom". (I don't have this, should I have got it supplied with my PC?)

Anyway, I tell it to skip file, and the 3 files it needs but can't find are:

(By the way, when I connected it to the normal joystick port it didn't even list it in device manager - it's as though it didn't realise it was plugged in, which is why I'm using the USB port.)

I have installed DirectX 7.0a but that didn't help, and my sound card is by C-Media (CM18738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) who I can't find on the net for updates. I use Win 98.

Sorry to have gone on for so long but I thought I should put as much info as possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This may be why it doesn't work on your soundcard. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q193/3/43.asp
As for the USB, you do need those files and they will be located on the CDRom. If you don't have the cdrom then you chould have the cab files on your hard drive and should be able to point the driver update to those files when it needs them. Find out where your cab files are by going to start then find files and folders, Search for *.cab it should find quite a few files. The ones you want will be called win98_##.cab where the ## will be a specific number. There should be quite a few all in the same location with consecutive numbers. Run the driver update again and when it needs those files point it to the directory where the cab files are at. The cab files should be on your computer if you don't have the win98 cd.
Then check out this page http://support.microsoft.com/support/Hardware/FreeStylePro/faq/default.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

I just put my Sidewinder joystick on my computer again. The built in drivers work great but the system won't allow me to install the profiler included with the original drivers CD.
MS's site was as abyssmal and useless as usual. They had updated versions of the profiler but it said to use it on win98 and no indication was made as to its use with xp.
Anybody have a download site for me?

Well, I bought the SideWinder x6.
I installed IntelliType and plugged in the keyboard. Everything worked except the volume control (+, -).
However, I did on another computer, Windows XP, and worked correctly.
Then I upgrade Windows 7. Currently, I am with the build 7201.
When I finished installing, I realized that the control volume is working properly.
Unfortunately, it was just 3 days. Now stopped working again.
Already uninstalled and installed drivers several times, including older versions.
I know that the IntelliType is still in beta, but it worked before. Can someone help me?

Ps: Sorry for bad english.

hmmm... I have exactly the same keyboard and haven't had any problems... (I'm running 7100)

Did you get the 64bit drivers if you have a 64bit OS?? that will cause problems. That's probably the only thing I can think of sorry i couldn't help more.

I have just bought a new computer that only has USB inputs, and not the inputs that the old joysticks take... I've bought an adapter so that I can connect my Sidewinder Precision Pro to the USB port, but it doesn't detect it correctly... When I go the my "game controllers" window in control panel, and search for it, it finde Sidewinder 3d pro and it says it isn't connected... what can I do? Can I install my soundcard from my old computer (it has the correct input for the joystick) and just use that to connect my joystick to the computer?

Thank you

A:Sidewinder Precision Pro, help!!

Has anybody ever opened a Sidewinder 3D Pro? I'm trying to pull it apart to clean the buttons, they stick and cause all sorts of wierdness during games. I'm stuck on the base. There are four screws under the base and it seems there is a series of plastic tabs holding the unit together resisting my rehabilitation attemps.
