Pc slow, HDD light always blinking, feezes up every 30 seconds

Q: Pc slow, HDD light always blinking, feezes up every 30 seconds

First of all thank you for trying to help!
My pc is rather new (3 months) and hasent been causing any problems untill now. In the last couple of days, i've noticed an odd increase in the hdd led activety. after reading up on the web, i figured this was probably due to vista background stuff. However, the problem got worse- to the point where the os couldent start after restarting. (it would start up fine from the cd drive). after a few restarts it managed to start up, and since then the pc is super slow, with hdd led always flashing.
this happend around the same time i downloaded and installed vista SP1.
I checked the sata connection to the hdd, but it didnt help.

i guess my question is this- is it hardware for sure, or could it be software? i can format if it's software, just wondering if i should. maybe the hdd is just dead...

Thanks in advance for any help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello World.   I'm not able to power up an Ideapad Flex 15.  When I press the power button, its led starts blinking, in synchonicity with the power light indicator, making a short blink every almost 5 seconds.   I've dissasemblied it. Fan cooler tries to start, but suddenly stops. This issue repeats every 5 seconds, same time as the laptop blinks.  I've tried common steps (like keeping the power button pressed with no battery and no charger). So, if anyone has a possible solution, I'll appreciate your help. Thanks a lot!

I have Lenovo Yoga 910. It's a couple years old. Suddenly I experienced lagging with the keyboard. Every button must be pushed at least a couple of seconds to appear or response. Some buttons are worst than the others. I called Lenovo and was advised to try to do hard reset by pressing down the power button for 45 seconds followed by pressing the Nuvo button but that didn't work. The problem was still happening. It's not windows upgrade related because this issue was also happening in BIOS when clicking on the arrow buttons and pgup/down buttons. I also tested it in Safe mode and it's still lagging. I even tried restoring the original windows version that came from Lenovo and still didn't work. After researching on the net, some were saying to unplug the battery cable and plug back in to solve the issue. So i did that, I unplug the battery cable but NOW....I have a different problem, worst than before.Pressing the power button doesn't do anything, the laptop doesn't start up. When i plugged in the charger, orange light next to it is blinking. According to Lenovo manual that this means the battery is under 20% but I left it charged overnight and it's still the same (orange light blinking). Also pressing the power button still doesn't do anything. But i noticed if i keep on pressing the power button, it will blink white lights every 20 seconds or so.The battery was in good condition because I did Lenovo diagnostic before I unplug the battery cable so I don't think this is batter... Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Dell Dimension E521 with Windows XP Home Edition OS. I have noticed that the light indicating the hard drive is being accessed blinks all the time. My old HP ( Win 98) didn't do this. Is this an XP thing or is there a problem? I have Norton security suite installed and use Adaware And Spy Bot. No viruses shown.

A:Blinking Hd Light

The blinking LED is indicating that it is constantly working. Norton security suite is what we call a resource hogger meaning it is taking the speed out of your computer. What you could is is download process explorer from the freeware link in my sig and try to determine what is keeping your PC busy.

Are you using P2P applications like Limewire?

all i did was put in a new cd/rw i plugged the computer back up and now i get a blinking cursor. i can load from my a:drive.

at first it said no operating system found on any device. soooo i was thinking maybe the hard drive was bad. i unhooked the hard drive and hooked it up to another computer and it worked fine. So fine that I installed XP on it (figuring i would do this while I had it out and it was working) I hooked everything back up I can hear it trying to load then it stop. and it comes down to a blinking cursor.

By the way to add to this I wanted to make sure the new cd wasn't bad I hooked the old one up and got the same message. then i hooked the new one back up and the computer said to boot from the cd press any key. funny thing I hit any key and nothing happens but that darn blinking cursor!

Please someone anyone help meeeeeeeee!

A:all i get is a blinking light

If I'm following you right........You had XP installed on your hard drive while it "was out" of your machine?
This is most likely your problem. XP does an "inventory" of installed hardware on the machine it is being installed onto.
You have most likely wasted your time with that.
Was the drive formatted an "clean installed"?
If so you have lost everything anyway..........So

You'll have to start over.
Do you have the XP CD?

I have recently obtained a laptop with W7 Home Premium installed. This is the first time I'm using W7.

My HDD light on the laptop keeps blinking, even when I'm not doing anything, just staring at the desktop. I don't notice anything on the performance, everything seems to run fine.

One thing I was immediately aware of is how W7 seems to run a lot of processes in the background; indexing, defragging, etc... I have turned these off, along with stuff like WDefender, Firewall, my hdd light still keeps blinking.

I have also noticed that googling this issue reveals lots of results with mixed replies. Some say HDD light is supposed to be blinking and/or this is completely normal, others say it might be an issue.

Just as I was writing this, I also downloaded a gadget for monitoring hdd: Drives Meter. Looking at the graph, the hdd doesn't seem to be doing much. It usually stays on %0,
just some little activity here and there... Yet the light is blinking on a heartbeat rate. Bear in mind, I am running Comodo+Eset at the background; however, for comparison, on my PC (running XP Pro) which also runs Comodo+Eset, there is no blinking whatsoever.

So my question: Is this actually a problem?

A:HDD light keeps blinking

Welcome to SF. The simple and quick answer is no.....not an issue to fret about. I would ask what Anti-virus programs you're running? And always a good idea to keep them updated daily and run them often....but that's just me.

You'll have to be more specific. What's the model or serial number of the Laptop? Also what does the manual say the light is for?

If the battery is dying then the laptop shouldn't run very long on battery, maybe even just a matter of minutes before it shuts down.

I have windows Vista Business edition 32 bit w sp2.

Last week we ( I think ) picked up a bug. When we click on Citrix to go into a company AS400 program, the open window starts blinking on and off. The blue bar on top of the window that is. Also when you click and hold to drag a window, when the window blinks, it is like you let up on the mouse button and the window pops back to where it was. It is like the blinking interrupts whatever you are doing.

I have run our virus scan and removed 4 quarantined trojan problems. I used system restore and it fixed it on Friday last week. When we start the computer this morning, it is back.

I can't figure out what to do. Any help would sure be appreciated.

A:active window blinking every 2 seconds

Its not good that it was gone and came back. Lets start from the beginning
Update your anti virus and run a full scan
Download, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes.
Report back either way.

Hi all,

I recently (about 3 days ago) did a fresh install of 7 on my Dell Latitude E6410. All drivers are up to date, and this problem does not occur when I boot to my Linux partition. When I'm in 7, my hard disk sits there blinking constantly, whether the machine is idle or not. It's a bit annoying. I've tried turning of the paging file, system restore, superfetching and search indexing, but it still doesn't seem to make any difference. I initially thought it was my AV software (freeware version of Avira), so I uninstalled that just to see if it made any difference, which it doesn't either. Task manager seems to report csrss.exe is making all the I/O reads. Is there anyway I can stop this, it's very annoying. The only other thing I can think of which this could be is Prefetching - but does it usually take this long for it sort itself out?

Post script edit - Another tidbit of info, the drive is definitely *not* doing load-unload cycles. That's the first thing I checked since my previous laptop had this problem and that's certainly not it. I even forced the power settings on the drive using QuietHDD (since this corrected the problem on my previous laptop) just to be sure and it makes no difference.

A:Fresh Install of 7 - blinking HDD every few seconds

How was Win7 activated?

Did you reinstall with just the OS DVD, or Recovery?

If you clean reinstalled did you keep the Dell Utility partition?

Has the problem been there since the reinstall or did it possibly begin after your changed out a driver given by the installer or optional Windows Updates?

Run a virus scan with Malwarebytes and MSE, which is a better free AV solution than Avira.

Google repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin VIew and Performance Diagnostics log at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools where you can also Generate a System Health Report.

Try a clean boot procedure: How to Troubleshoot a Problem by Performing a Clean Startup in Windows 7 or Vista

Uncheck all items at msconfig>Startup except AV and gadgets.

Run chkdsk and maker's HD diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Run sfc /scannow to make sure nothing has already corrupted System Files.

Finally, if nothing else helps then run a Repair Install which is next best thing to reinstall.

I have 2 external USB3 Western Digital external hard drives. A 1TB and a 2TB. When I turn off the computer, one plays along nice and powers down and the little white light stops blinking / being lit. But the 2TB external hard drive light continues to blink. Now the drive itself is not moving, I checked, no noises coming from inside. Now is this a known bug, should I be worried? The hard drive works ok, there are no other problems with it but I still would like an answer to this question. Now here are some specs on the drive in the form of a picture.

I would think it`s more of an issue with the enclosure, dock, not the hard drive. I would say just unplug the thing if it`s not spinning.

wha can you tell me about the little red led light on my pc that blinks on and off. Someone told me that you can tell what th pc is doing by watching this light. I surmised that if it is blinking, that it is searching the hard drive for something. Does it go off or stay on steady when it is done searching. ?? Are there any other indications ??

Sounds like the hard drive activity light.
Anytime the computer accesses data on the hard drive
the light will flash.
During times of high activity,it may look like it is on constantly.
During low activity,it flashes periodically.

I've had Windows 8 sitting around since February, and got around to installing it yesterday. So far all is well, except for when I shut my computer off the power LED will keep flashing. At first I thought my computer was just in sleep mode, but after hitting a couple keys that was not the case. Is there a setting some where that would cause this. I know it's a minor issue but damn that LED is bright.

What I miss with "7" is that the network icon does not show activity, even in the unscientific way that the old XP "two screens connected by a line" thing in the system tray used to do.

There may be a way to get "7" to do that... if so, I have completely missed it!

Not a deal breaker by any means, but there were times when something as basic and as visual as that would really help....

A:LAN activity (blinking light) ... how to?

This was discussed a while ago in a different thread, and one suggestion was to use Lan Lights which was originally developed for XP. In looking at the release notes, it has recently been updated to account for Windows 7 colors and to address large memory systems.

I have it running on my Windows 7 systems (32 bit) - I missed the blinking tray icon also.

A nice side benefit is that it shows a lot of other information as well, like totals, network activity, etc.

After doing so, I opened it up again but got a black screen and the 3 discs light on the bottom left of my laptop was blinking red. I left it there for a few minutes and it still kept blinking red. After shutting it off and waiting a while, it finally worked again.
Has this happened to anyone before? What does it mean, and will it happen again?

I did the same with windows 7 64bit but it did not work.

I wonder if there's anyone out there having the same issue that could share a little knowledge with me so i can solve this..

I am experiencing some difficulty with my desktop computer. It is a Dell Vostro 220s, Windows XP SP3, 3GB ram, 250GB hard drive. A couple nights ago we had a power outage. However, after a second or two, it turns amber and begins blinking.

I googled what the potential problems could be and how to troubleshoot it. I'm assuming based on my search results that it is a power-based failure of some kind, typically either the power supply or the motherboard.

I came across this while I was searching: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-prod..._desktop/vostro-220s_service manual_en-us.pdf

I'm trying to figure out if this problem is with my Modem, wiring or the ISP, I mostly have good service for DSL and get anywhere from 5 to 6.5 MBPS speed on testing it, but often get a DSL light on the modem that will start blinking and when it does that the computer and my Xbox lose connection, it could blink just once which is enough to kick me off an online Xbox game or it could blink for a few seconds to several hr's at a time, rebooting the modem doesn't help when it's doing it for a long time and I have replaced the filter with a high quality one and it made no difference, any thoughts?

A:Occasional blinking DSL light?

I might do the easy things first
Power on reset of the modem.Unplug it and let it be powered off for at least 2 minutes.Power it up.
If the modem was supplied by your ISP,see if they will replace it..
I had the same issue lastyear,.bad modem.ATT replaced it.
Also here is a pretty good tool to check the stability of the lineand links on the line.

First off, connect one computer directly to the modem (power cycle the modem after changing the connection), and do this.
Register at www.dslreports.com and run theirwww.dslreports.com/linequality. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

I have an Antec "Sonata" case with the 380 watt power supply. There are 2 led's on the front of my case. One of the lights is orange for the hard drive activity and the other light is green and turns on when the power supply is on.

Just recently the green led (p/s) started blinking. Not a very rapid blink but a slow blink like you would count seconds. one thousand one, one thousand two, .... etc. continuously.
What exactly does this mean? Does this mean that the power supply is going bad?

I have a dell mini 10v that uses windows xp. week before last i noticed that my computer's power light was blinking red. what could be causing this problem? when I touch the charger, ever so lightly, or barely touch the pc, the computer will power off. after jiggling the wire to the charger, the power light comes back on, and is blinking red. sometimes i do not even have to touch the pc, it powers off on its own.

i then have to press the power button for the computer to start up.

i was told i needed a new charger, which i purchased, but the power light is still blinking red. i went to the power option and my battery is at 55% and does not change. what is causing this? do I need a new battery? i checked to see if my power option was set on stand by. it was and so i changed it, but the light is still blinking red. does anybody have any suggestions?

i was told t remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstall, but i cringe at having to do that. the screws in the back are so small i am not sure i can even get the panel out, but if i have to, then i will.

what should i do? thanks for the help

...in one of the 'other' forums, you know..., an OP about this subject was given all kinds of information and a lot of misinformation, including 'veteran' posters TELLING the OP to just live with it and stop complaining. Can you believe it? Sounds like some political dialog, instead of...

(I won't register for 'their' forum because the last time I did, a few years back, I was INSTANTLY hit with a wave of spam that didn't stop. Had to change my address.)

One poster said it was the system's 'heartbeat,' seriously.

Anyway, I was totally annoyed with my hdd led blinking constantly, and then I discovered a suggestion by Mike M999 in one of the 'other' forums that if you disabled the cd\dvd in device manager it might go away.

Instant cure for me.

But I'm repeating this here, even though someone commented with this solution in the general forum some time back, because what I noticed is that the device driver for this new model of LG CD\DVD Writer, so new, that its model isn't even listed on their web site.

The properties for the driver in device manager of this CD\DVD Writer shows that it was written by MS back in 2006!

I have three LG CD\DVD Writers that I bought over 2004-5 and there aren't any LG drivers for them now. I wonder if MS's 2006 driver would have worked. No big deal, as this new writer only cost $16+. Can you believe that we had to pay more than $300 for drives like this not too long ago.

So, I go to LG's support page and input my data and squeeze my email mess... Read more

A:Blinking hdd light WAS constant...

Do you know if the problem only affected certain LG drives?

I have 6 of them spread across 6 computers, and IIRC, I think I saw this symptom on one of the PCs. But I reinstalled the OS for other reasons and the problem went away.

Customer service isn't what it used to be.

My dad recently tried to install new ram in his computer (not mine in case you remember that topic) but when he did the computer wouldnt turn on and the power light constantly blinked, quite rapidly. Thinking that the new ram might be the problem he took it out, put the old back in and it STILL wouldnt turn on, and the light still blinks. Apparently it happend last time he unplugged his computer, although i don't know why he did it then. He said that last time he set ti aside and later (week+) plugged it back in and it worked. What would the problem be and how could we fix it?

He has a Dell 4700C.
