Q: why don't I have the same setting options as you?

hello,

my laptops display shows everything elongated/squashed and as for display setthings I only have:1152x864 ,1024x678 and 600x800
my laptop has an 17.3 inch pnp monitor, win7 os, 64 bit i5 core, vga adapter

at the color settings 32/16 I saw that I had more display settings: advanced settings->adapter>list all modes and none of the listed modes had 1280x800 you posted for the 17-18 inch monitors, every option still had a squashed look and it looked even poorly when I choose a lower resolution.

what should I do?
ps sorry for my english spelling

Preferred Solution: why don't I have the same setting options as you?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: why don't I have the same setting options as you?

This is more than likely a display driver issue, please complete your systems specs a bit more thoroughly, i.e. ATi HD5770, ASUS MRP45678ie, etc w/o knowing your hardware it's very hard to really help you.

Where is the option setting for Win 10 to NOT display a file as anything but it's name?
Running around this AM with Hurricane Irma in the offing taking pics of house and grounds. My camera records a JPEG and a Raw file. When I download (to backup) the images on to my Desktop it takes Win 10 f-ing forever to stop trying to display the Raw files. Obviously I've got something set so Win 10 can't ignore the files. What? I set the view option to detail only but it still takes an inordinate amount of time. Arg! Advice please.

I am having difficulty setting power options. If I enter and then save my settings, I get a popup saying 'revisions don't match'. No explanation, no help in getting them to match. Are there default settings, or can someone give me an example of some working settings. I'd like the monitor to go off, machine go to standby, then hibernate. But when to have discs spin down? I hope this is clear, and I'm sure it's a stupid question, but what can you do? Thanks. excentric

A:Setting Power Options

Hi excentric and Welcome to Bleeping Computer,Possibly because Standby and Hibernate are more or less the same thing. This option quickly saves your work and puts your computer in a virtual sleep.....a delicate mode between on and off.If you want to, Turn Off the computer when you are done for the day.You will have to power off the monitor manually.

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

Thanks!

Martin

A:Setting Autoplay options

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

The only way I can help him is to login remotely, and now I can't even do that. He's a local admin on a standalone computer, any ideas on how to get to Internet Options?

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

A:Options for setting up a wireless printer

Instructions for creating an ad hoc network in Windows 7 can be found here:

I also wonder if maybe it has anything to do with encryption?
It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

All previous versions gave us a list of steps to set folder options......we'd go through the steps.....youre options might be fine ...........now, but the next time you use windows explorer, your options are......not there.
Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! " ? $ % ... but produce the same symbols as the first example (laptop's own keyboard).

I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

Hello,

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

Here's my problem with Vista.

When I go into any folder for the first time, it comes up with a set of random things to sort the folders by, and random view settings.

I want every folder to have the "details" view by default. Also, I want the tabs "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" that I can click on to sort these, with "Type" being the default selected one.

This is how I had things in WinXP. All I had to do was click "Apply to folders" in the folder options. I do this in Vista, also, I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. Yet it makes up a random set of view settings for any folder I haven't manually set myself.

So, how do I make Windows Vista stop coming up with random view settings for folders? When I click on a folder of pictures I still want it in "Details" view, with "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" tabs. With "Type" selected as the default to sort by.

Yet, it appears in "Large Icons" view, with "Date Taken", "Tags", "Size", and "Rating" as the only sort by options.

How do I stop this madness?

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you

Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with Personalization options.
On the desktop, when i right-click and select 'Personalize' from the menu, a window briefly pops up for fraction of a second and then disappears. I simply can't get to the Personalization options.
Working around this, i tried to access it through Control Panel > Personalization and Appearance and selecting it from there.

In the menu, I find that the Personalization icon has been replaced with a generic folder icon and it's renamed to 'Personalization CPL Provider'.
I also cannot select 'Change desktop background' or 'Customize colors' as it pops up and error window with the following respectively:
Windows cannot find
'shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9971-BEB064C98683}\1\::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4b...\pageWallpaper'.

and

Windows cannot find

'shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\1\::{ED834ED6-4B5A-...\pageColorization'.

Is there any way to fix this at all? I've looked around but the only solutions are to "upgrade" my Windows installation to fix the missing files.

I've already run "sfc /scannow" twice and there were still errors it couldn't fix.

I would appreciate any help at all, thanks.

I am begging for help as this problem is driving me insane! To start the story Windows 10 asked me to upgrade last year, and God I wish I didn't. I had nothing but problems with the OS, mainly down to it being unsupported for my notebook by HP. I Decided to roll back to Windows 8 and during the rollback, the notebook has failed catastrophically! 'Luckily' the recovery option kicked in, but this also failed and crashed mid recovery.  I am now left with the boot failing immediatley and showing a BCD error 0x0000034. (press esc for UEFI). Once in UEFI the only option that doesnt bring the same BCD error is the HP System Test. This works ok and the system passes all tests (including hard drive which though a lot of searching online is often the root cause of the above error) I want to enter the BIOS settings and set it to boot from USB in order to use my windows recovery USB, but pressing F11 or F10 goes straight to the Blue screen of death with the same error above! I am fairly proficient with computers and managed quite a few repairs etc, but this loop of blue screen with no conceivable boot option is driving me insane! Someone please help! Thanks in advance, Thebgb!

I have an older Belkin F6C1500-TW-RK UPS and the mfg has not offered software management for the Win 7 64bit OS. I want to let Win 7 manage the battery and shutdown. I set the High Performance under Power Options to turn off display and put the computer to sleep after 3 minutes as a test. I yanked the input to the UPS and nothing happens and I went at least 5-6 minutes (didn't time). The battery icon in the sys tray stated 2 minutes remaining and never moved.

I have connected the UPS via USB and the Device and Printers, USB Input Device show the drivers are fine and the UPS is working.

Am I misunderstanding what Win 7 will do on its own without mfg monitoring software?

The attached are screen shots how I set the advanced settings

A:How to set Advanced options in Power Options (64 bit Ultimate)

Welcome to 7Forums!

With those options, you can set how much time windows will take an action after you are not taking any action
So if you set 3 minutes for turning off the screen or going to sleep and leave it alone it will scedule these action after 3 minutes.
I don't really understand the part where you explain that the timer stopps. I do not recommend setting the same values for both options under 'on battery' or 'plugged in' state.
I would just increase the 'on battery' / sleep time to 5 or 10 minutes and see if it works.

Cheers!

I am trying to add a refurbished HP system to my menagerie. It had Windows 7 Pro (64bit) installed when I got it. I went through the setup without any problems, created a user account for myself (Lewis), set the system name to TestPC and started installing and testing some software. Simple internet access (web page browsing) is working fine.

Today, I connected and external disk drive (from a Windows XP system) and I was able to successfully read anything on it. But when I attempted to delete a file, I was told I needed permission even though I am the administrator. I found some instructions at Microsoft for changing ownership of the files on the external drive, so I did that. It was then that I noticed the user name shown was Lewis(TestPC\Lewis) and I was still not able to delete files on the external drive.

Being primarily a Unix person, I have been fumbling around looking for something that would indicate why Windows felt the need to attach the system name to user names. In Computer>Properties>Computer name, domain and workgroup settings>System Properties>Computer Name>Network ID, I found a selection with the following description: "This computer is part of aa business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work". The \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME combination is not erroneous, it's how Windows keeps track of users in your network (even if said network only has one Windows PC).

For Windows, when a computer does not belong to a domain, the PC name is used instead of a domain name. I am currently typing this using a laptop with name AGM-W8LAP02 (my own naming policy, my home network is called AGM and this is Windows 8 Laptop number 02). My complete username for this user profile I am currently using on this computer is \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari. This combination \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME does separate my user profile Kari on this computer from user profile Kari on other computers. User \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari is not the same user than \\AGM-W7DESK01\Kari.

For Windows it's easier and more logical to use this naming policy even if your PC would be the only one in network. If you now add computers to your network which also contain user profile Lewis, Windows does not have to change the system to be able to separate users not only from other users on the same computer but also from same users on other computers.

My parents bought a PC last year running W8. I set up there talktalk E mail accounts in the W8 Native E mail client from the Mail tile at the start screen without any problem. All worked fine until recently when in order to download an app they had to register an Outlook E Mail address. Not sure if they had updates applied as well but they had to start logging on to the PC at boot up every time using a password. In an effort to resolve this they restored the PC to an earlier time which has cured the logging on issue (ie no password required) but when they access the Mail tile from the start screen it is an outlook E Mail account that comes up. I have tried without success logging into this outlook account and then adding the talktalk accounts. I even tried using my own account but could not add that either.
All they want is to click the Mail tile and get there talktalk accounts to come up just as before (no outlook or hotmail or anything else). Is there a way to reset the E Mail client/tile in W8 back to what came with PC so that I could set it up just as I did when the PC was purchased. They are running W8 and do not wish to restore back to factory settings as they have a few other bits and pieces of software installed.
If they upgrade to W8.1 will they be forced into using a password to log on every time ?
Any help in restoring the E Mail back to the native W8 client would be much appreciated

Welcome to Eight Forums, drew1000.

The default program to open emails has changed to Outlook. Go to Control Panel > choose Default Programs > Set your default programs > choose Mail. There you can change the default.

Hello:
Every morning when the PC/Win 7 started, appearance Display Setting changed to '1280 x 1024(recommended), instead I set display setting to '1024 x 768,' since the monitor is older and works fine with '1024 x 768' appearance display setting, rather 'recommend setting' ... '1280 x 1024' setting.

Is there a way for me to lock the display setting to '1024 x 768' permanently?

Thanks for any help on this in advance.

Hello.
I am using a Canon i9100 printer. Just reinstalled printer in a new Thinkpad laptop with updated drivers from Canon website. This printer worked great (color representation) in my old thinkpad. When I print in standard print quality mode, and set to plain paper the print colors are very good. When I print in High quality mode, and set to glossy or photo paper the color is way off. I checked driver color management and it is set to the same setting in both laptops. I haven't played with the "color profile". Any suggestions, I really would like to get a good glossy print.
Thanks, JB

A:Color difference between plain paper setting and glossy setting

so are you saying it worked ok on the old thinkpad with both types of paper, and now on the new one the photo paper is "off".

Are you using the MFG Paper and Ink? Best bet is to probably email via their online support...if the issue is between the new/old laptop XP > Vista...then it would probably have something to do with the driver (Canon) wrote for Vista. They might be able to provide the proper tweaks.

Hi. I'm working on a Toshiba laptop that originally would not connect to the internet so made a disk containing SP1 and installed it thinking that it would fix the issue. Instead it created anther issue. I cant log into a profile with out it hanging up on Setting up personalized setting for: Internet explorer. I have never had a computer do this and I'm totally lost on what i need to do to fix this.

Im currently running a CHKDSK /R and I have tried doing a system restore as well. Before the Restore the computer would say that SVCHost.exe had stopped responding after several hours of it being on Setting up personalized setting for: Internet explorer.

I'm trying to set up a Synology NAS for my home network, however I can only access via the Synology utility and through a browser using the internal IP address. It does not otherwise appear on my network; I can't ping it, map drives to it by any method, etc.

Googling suggests that this problem can be linked the setting in system > computer name, domain and workgroup settings> change settings > Network ID; and ensuring it is set to 'This is a home network'. However my computer is stuck on 'this computer is part of a business network'; if I change the setting, it asks for a restart and immediately reverts to 'business'. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any way to force the setting?
My network itself is set to 'home'.

Other potential solutions to the NAS problem are also welcome, as that's what the real issue is, although I feel I've hunted most of the low hanging fruit already.

Thanks!

If this machine ever belonged to a Domain then it would say that. The problem is that once you are part of a Domain you will be locked out of changing the location settings.

Domain Network: For domain networks in large corporate environments. This type of network is controlled by a network administrator and can?t be changed.

You may be able to change this by going to Winkey + R to open Run prompt and type gpedit.msc

Navigate to: Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Setting | Network List Manager Policies > Network Location tab, you may be able to change the location here but it may still be locked down by the Domain group policy.

Not everyone will be interested, but:
I've found a reference to a MSDN site which provides useful info.

Did you ever want to know or need to know the correspondence between a registry setting and a group policy setting?
I just wish this had existed earlier.

I'm giving the link to John Savill's blog on this. Therein he has the link to the msdn page.

This MSDN url i bookmark.

Here's the link to John's article:
Q: Is there a web site that allows an easy search of all the Group Policy settings that exist?

A:Registry Setting, Group Pollicy Setting, Explanation

looks great.. I'm going to forward this to my network admin. He'll love it. Thanks.

I just recieved this little pop-up box on the top left corner and the screen entirely black. It said Setting Up Personalized Setting For...
It ran through Google Chrome, Internet Explorer e.t.c.
I realized that it looked like a virus; so i shut it down and restarted my laptop; thinking it wouldn't happen again. After it passed through the login; it shows up again.
Is it a virus in any sort of way? What can i do to avoid this from happening?

I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.

Anyone any idea what's going on?
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).

Does this wireless NIC show up in Device Manager under Network Adaptors with the driver installed?

I'm not sure which model of Lenovo we are working with but have you tried Windows update Center of the Lenovo site for driver updates?

It should be showing up under Settings, then Network.

In the Dell XPS 13 (9360). Using the latest BIOS 1.3.2 (but the old previous BIOS version was the same).

If you go to the "Fn Lock Options" under BIOS, there are 2 options, they are listed as:
Lock Mode Disable/Standard   = The F1-12 Keys behave as function keys
Lock Mode Enable/Secondary = The F1-12 Keys control the secondary functions.

These options are Swapped. If you disable the "Fn Lock" and set the mode to "Lock Mode Disable/Standard", log into Windows, and Press F1, it will then MUTE the system. Even though it should act like an "F1" Key.
If you go back into BIOS, set the mode to "Lock Mode Enabled/Secondary", log into the system and Press F1, then the Help comes up.

The options are swapped on these two configure options. Please update the text in the BIOS to match the appropriate configuration. Thanks. I've included a ScreenShot of the BIOS options. "Fn Lock" does do what it describes (disables Fn-Esc). Doesn't matter if u turn this on or off. If you have it set up as I do below, the Fn Keys are set for the proper Function (F1-F12) operation. However, the text says it should do its secondary functions in this mode.
