My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

Q: My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

For the last month or so, every time I log off my account, the keyboard does not register at the Windows Log In screen. This makes it so I have to restart the computer and then it works fine.
There are three accounts on the computer, the casing has been half removed for the last 3 months, a DVD burner and driver recently installed 3 months ago and I am using a wireless off brand USB keyboard and mouse.
OS: Windows Xp Home Edition 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
As for the second part, the computer requires several restarts to boot up, sometimes up to twenty minutes of turning on and off to boot up. Only started doing this a week ago.

Preferred Solution: My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

It sounds like something is wrong with your Windows XP drivers. Something like that happened to me while building my computer, and when I boot up the keyboard did not work because my copy of windows XP was bad. You could try reinstalling windows XP, and It might work better, but I dont have a definite answer to your problem.

I have an ASUS notebook running windows 7 64-bit. I am using the QuietOffice power profile, however the screensaver won't kick in no matter what I do, and the display does not turn off even though I set it to be after 5-minutes of inactivity. I don't know if there is something running in the background... I have turned off my usb wireless mouse, and nothing....

Any ideas?

THanks.

A:HELP: power option doesn't work - screen saver doesn't start!

This is another case of factory bloatware interfering - in this case a useless factory utility overriding Win7's superior built-in version.

Googling the Quiet Office feature of Asus there are multiple reported problems. Best to default to the Win7 built-in Power Options in Control Panel. Set up a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer then use High Performance.

Here are other tips for cleaning up factory bloatware

I have a 4y old Sony VAIO (VGN-NS11J) that stopped working today morning after making a whirring noise

Repeated attempts to restart failed and after many attempts, I managed to get to the Startup Repair mode - after a long time, startup repair says it failed to automatically repair the problem

I managed to run system restore but after a while I got the following message: "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The disk strucgture is corrupted and unreadable (0X80070571)

My laptop did not come with a Windows Vista CD/Recovery disk

My first priority is to recover a few files in the laptop - if I am able to do this, then I dont mind junking the laptop

Since this is an old laptop, I would prefer not to use an expensive professional to recover the data

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either
- and probably other stuff that I haven't took note of yet...

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

A:programs not loading right, computer doesn't shut down right, sys recov doesn't work

no replies yet? :(

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.
Defragged my C drive, still no results besides the computer feeling a bit smoother-running o_o

I have been using my computer for a while now... about 4 months. I download torrents, but I don't think that's the problem. When I turn it off, it turns back on kinda like a restart. When I force shut-down, I let up off the button and it comes back on. I can hold the button down and it'll keep turned off, but when I let it off, the same thing happens. I have two power buttons, and I have tried both of them. Same results... But I only noticed it when my computer speakers randomly start beeping while I was watching a show I downloaded off a torrent. I have a main monitor and a 32" TV hooked up to my graphics card through HDMI. I wouldn't think it would have much effect because I do this normally. It just happened, so I haven't had much experience with messing around with it yet. All I do know is my keyboard stopped working all together. It is connected through a USB adapter for the keyboard. I tried moving it to a regular USB port and the beeping stopped, but my keyboard didn't continue to work. I'm pretty good with computers, but this one has me baffled. I have my antivirus up to date, and I even ran a scan. Nothing was found of course. I don't download anything such as porn or anything. Now, what's strange is my keyboard still has the lights turning on, and my mouse, hooked up through a USB port still works. Even my internet is working fine. A:Speakers beeping, keyboard doesn't work, and computer restarts

Well, my computer is done...

So when I tried to start it up, i plugged the keyboard into the same port as my mouse. I thought it might work since the mouse still worked. Well, it didn't. It went into the system recovery and searched for problems. It restarted the computer and loaded after the initial boot screen (del bios F9 boot setup), it just went to a green box and a N with a ~, like what would be in PINATA, right next to it. It fails to boot past that. I guess i have to go get it looked at later. By the way, I'm in Korea working for the stupid army. The barracks have US plugs and everything. Well, props to anyone who can figure this out before I format my hard drive. It is a lot of data, but luckily I have an external hard drive (2Tb) to back up my stuff. I just don't want to have to go through the trouble of formatting the disks(2 x 500Gb).

Hello Team,

My computer has recently started behaving strangely.

Sometimes it is fine, but sometimes loading webpages is incredibly slow, entering keystrokes delays so badly as to be almost impossible, and clicking on links in emails from ebay or facebook results in error messages that windows can't find them and to check they have been typed correctly, - when they are auto generated.

The fault is intermittent and re-booting can clear things up sometimes.

The sysinfo is below and I ran the Hijackthis program and the log is below that.
I downloaded dds but when I run it a dos prompt screen with a message appears very briefly and then disappears without trace.

I downloaded gmer it does the quick scan ok I uncheck iat/eat and make sure only drive C is checked. The scan runs for a while and a log is being created but it stops working at "volume/shadowcopy5" and I don't get a file to attach.

Sorry I can't do any more.

Many thanks for any help,

Rumi

Hello guys,

Does anyone know how to fix the "Computer" Link in the Start Menu? When I click on it nothing happens and when I try and click properties on it, it brings up this screen instead of Explorer:

A:Computer Link in Start Menu Doesn't Work.

That is the proper screen you get when you click properties.

You could try running a system file check.

In an elevated command prompt type sfc /scannow

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

In the meantime, just type co in search, then choose computer from the list.

So there I am sitting on my computer typing up an English assignment with AVG running a test on my computer, there was a Trojan in the list but I wanted to wait until it finished scanning everything. So suddenly the computer freezes, I try restarting but it goes to a black screen with my mouse visible and then gets stuck at the "welcome" windows screen. I immediately got on my laptop and started searching for possible solutions, so I came upon the Windows XP Recovery Console. I put in my xp cd, got recovery running, access my drive and started the recovery process. It got stuck at 54% and now I honestly don't know what options I have left without having to format everything and lose a ****ton if important Word Files. My comp OS is Windows XP if that's any help. Thank you for reading my post and I'm looking forward to a response.

Edit: trying Recovery again, it appears that it was just working very slowly so I've mistaken it for a problem. It's at 58% atm. What can I to solve my issue once the recovery process is finished?

EDIT: Aplogies for the insane Thread title, I'm sure it didn't look like that when I worte it, should read:

'HP turns on but doesn't start up - neverending beeping.'

Howdy all, long time reader first time poster, I've usually been able to find answers to my problems just by cruising around and searching but this time I'm stumped.

MY HP desktop computer seems to have decided that enough is enough. I have a young son who likes to press the power button because it is pretty and blue and when he presses it it turns orange (standbye) he was doing this yesterday and it turned off completely (as it does when you hold the button down for long enough.)

Upon turning it back on it beeps at me, goes silent and then continues with long beeps every few seconds. The fans come on but nothing else happens. The keyboard doesn't light up to register it's connection to the computer, the screen stays blank and when turned off and on again informs me that there is no signal input.

I have not upgraded the computer at all since it was bought in September 06 and it is dusted regularly. (inside and out)

I have tried:

Disconnecting all power, holding down the on button for 30 seconds and then leaving it for 7 hours.

Disconnecting all power, holding down the on button for 30 seconds, reconnecting and holding F10 whilst booting up - this elicits the response of it starting up for a second, turning off, restarting up and then reverting to the above beep... Read more

Updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 two weeks ago.
Had problems with Firefox.  Tried to download to replace existing Firefox.  CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up.  Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
-  Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry.  If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.

SO there are a few issues that I need help with.

A:windows 10 problems - start menu doesn't appear, windows key doesn't work, etc

Hello,
Well the first thing you should try is to Run System Restore to before all of these problems started or to when you first installed Windows 10.
Then try to download Firefox from there website
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Third thing is I would recommend to get rid of Avast it is low end and could be allowing virus I recommend ether McAfee or Norton Security.

Those are some things to think about
but it is all up to you when making your final decision

At first i thought it was the lack of power because i had a 500 watt psu. What is it that I'm doing wrong? Please help.

No beeps, fans are running, lights are on, DVD drive will open and shut, but no screen. I've tried everything-- removing RAM, different GFX card, etc.-- and nothing seems to work. At first, all I had to do was remove a CD and it worked, but after that the keyboard and mouse didn't work so I shut it down and now it won't come back up. I'm suspecting the motherboard or the power supply unit, but I'm not too sure. I can't check the PSU because I don't have access to the items needed. So.. I was just sitting down, watching a gaming stream online when all of a sudden i hear a beep! My monitor goes blank but my computer still appears to be on. I then decide to try and restart my computer, it gets as far as the windows (XP) loading screen and stops, so i try to restart again.. This time it manages to get past the loading screen but then a small blue box with nothing inside appears on my screen. I restart again and this time i get a blue screen with text, detailing the issue and that i should restart before more damage is caused. I restart and this time nothing happens. The computer turns on, but nothing else, It sounds as if the psu fan is speeding up and slowing down continuously. It's a hard noise to describe It doesn't feel like the psu fan is blowing any air out when i put my hand next to it... am i right to think that i have a dead psu or is it something much worse? :S

thankyou for anyone that can provide advice and thoughts on this situations )

*EDIT*

I'm beginning to think it is the graphics card, the sound which i originally thought was coming from the psu, seems to be coming from my graphics card. It would make sense, seeing as the monitor went blank but the computer remained on.

Now the question is, is my graphics card dead? : /

here's my problem, as near as I can tell,

a few months ago the wireless connection on my hp laptop stopped "seeing" my wireless network. Eventually, during a scan with my panda security system a virus was found (for some reason it is no longer in the logs-but is was, I think, trojan or sasser in my outlook folders-and it was deleted). The wireless seemed to work again but then went back to being "invisible" to my wireless detector on the laptop. I went to HP downloads to see if I could just update the "driver" and ended up updating "system bios" which seemed to work also, for a while, then the system goes back to not seeing the wireless. I could sometimes do the right-click "repair" option to get it to connect but that stops working after a while. I think that there is still some residual virus lurking in the system to cause this problem so that is why I am posting here. Thanks for any help you can give

After a power outage my brothers keyboard quit working. He has a desk top computer only one year old. He uses XP. We have rebooted several times. When booting up before Windows opens DOS says it can not find the keyboard.

We made sure the keyboard is plugged in properly (It is not USB connected). We tried another working keyboard, which also didn't work. In Windows we tried adding new hardware. The keyboard is not showing up in the hardware list.

Everything worked fine until the power outage. The computer was in the sleep mode at the time. The mouse continues to work fine and everything else works like it should.

Thank you!

The n key had been not working properly and now it stopped all together. I took the key off and tried pressing the white piece of soft plastic but nothing shows up. Is it time to get a new keyboard or is there something else to try? It seems like such a waist to throw out a keyboard when 1/100+ keys stopped working.

Hey Guys!! This is my first post, so we'll see how it goes.
So, here's the problem: I used the registry backup program on my computer to reverse some changes I had made to my system. Now, the keyboard doesn't work. It works when Windows boots (when Windows says "Press F8 for advanced startup options) but it doesn't work after that. Because of this, I can't login to Windows. Does anybody know what the problem is? By the way, my computer is a Compaq Armada E500 running Windows 2000 Professional.

Using Windows 8, I have discovered that the shift key doesn't work. I have to use cap's lock. Every time I click the cap's lock, an ' appears. I have to delete that before typing my capital word. Without shift, I can't make many important punctuation marks like the exclamation point and the
question mark. Using an on screen keyboard works, but it's so hard to move your mouse to click each letter. Also, the control key doesn't work. Earlier, whenever I typed the space, a space and a zero appeared. And now space works, but zero doesn't. Whenever I type zero, it become an 0. Not to mention that when I type one, 31 comes up, and when I type three, 31 comes up, too. Also, when I search something online, or save a PowerPoint, or anything else, it will bring something else up. For example, I want to search Mario online, before I can type ma, https://mail.go... comes up and I have to delete everything but the m and the a and start typing again. This started today, though I didn't download anything in the past week besides using http://www.youtube..., which is used by many others. I tried describing every problem to the best I could, and painfully typed with all the problems, so I hope someone answers. Please feel free to ask me
questions. Please elaborate with both
questions and answers. I will re-post this tomorrow if nobody answers or solves the problem. And then continue posting this every hour.

The keyboard doesn't work. I have two keyboards (ps/2 and usb) and after uninstalling my antivirus (avast), none of them work in windows (they work in bios section). All other usb devices like mouse and gamepad work.
Here is the screenahot of device manager:

Let us know if this works.

As the description states, I think that the keyboard driver was corrupted by one or more viruses back when I got infected with AV Security 2012 and ZeroAccess, among others.
However, my computer has since been declared clean after a great save by SweetTech.

I may be wrong about the virus being the cause of the problem, but I do know it's a software problem, as the keyboard will work while the computer is booting up, (long enough that I can still put it in safe mode) but as soon as Windows boots the physical keyboard becomes totally unresponsive, even in safe mode.

The On-screen keyboard still works.
I don't know whether a USB keyboard would work or not, as I don't have one.

I hve already tried different keyboards, uninstalling and reinstallng the keyboard driver normally, in safemode, and also reinstalling after rebooting the computer, but it didn't work.

The device status for the keyboard is:
This device cannot start (code 10)

My keyboard doesn't work after upgrading to Windows 10 . I have to press down the key for 3-5 seconds to get it working. Looking for solution. Thanks.

A:Keyboard doesn't work

Hi, Check the following. Open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the 'Ease of Access Centre'. Select the option 'Make the keyboard easier to use'. If there is a tick next to 'Turn on Filter Keys' or 'Turn on Sticky Keys', click the box to remove it, then click Apply and Ok to save this change. Regards, DP-K

When I shutdown my computer my display turns off, so I am guessing that my graphics card shuts down, but nothing else shuts down, and I am forced to manually shutdown. I have tried to clear CMOS, as I have had this problem before and fixed it for a while by reverting back to default BIOS settings because I had an overclock, but it has come back again.

Hi all. Ok so I am a video game geek and I love to play games. So then my keyboard and Joysticks worked and everything until yesterday. I use ePSXe Playstation emulator to play games from PS1 and stuff. So yesterday I opened it and I went to Controll Configuration to configure my controlls. It gives me and Error: Error Initializing DirectInput. So then my emulator shuts down. Even when I run my ISO Playstation games it gives me that error and the game starts but my controlls don't work. So then I thaught to play my PC Games. So Boot one up and the black screen opens than the screen turns of and goes back to the desktop. Then I tried another game the same thing happened. I tried all my games and that's what happens. So then I put my Donald Duck's Goi'n [email protected]! Game and it boots up then it goes to the place where I have to choose the language but my keyboard doesn't work! I pressed anything but it doesn't work. Not even the ALT+ F4 or Control + ALT+ DELETE. Nothing. So I just turn my computer of via the button on the CPU. So my keyboard doesn't work with any games. I have played all those games but now they stopped working. So I went to Controll Panel to check on the Game Controllers but it doesn't open. I keeped on opening it but doesn't open. When I double click it the mouse shows te busy sign for 1 or 2 secs and nothing happens! So now I am really worried. I NEED HELP! I am so frustrated with this problem! HELP!

Hello all , my number keys on the right side of my keyboard do not work . I have windows vista & desktop .I tried another keyboard with usb plug in and same result . When pressing the "num lock" once there is a low tone ,then pressing again to illuminate as if on and a higher tone rings . This has never happened before and I only use a few websites like ebay, you tube , & amazon, plus the programs are all safe by norton antivirus . Sounds like a bug/virus or perhaps a setting that was mistakenly changed. I have tried a couple of free microsoft downloads that were recommended and also tried a couple of recommended setting changes but haven't been able to solve . Thanks for your help . The right half of my keyboard (L, O, 9, f9, and all other keys to the right) don't work. The only exceptions to this problem are the ']' key. Also, the only keys that don't work on the num-pad are 0456 and delete. The problem surfaced after I took my laptop apart to clean the fan, but once i reassembled the laptop, those keys didn't work. I know I must have put something back wrong, but I don't know how to fix the problem. I use a HP Pavilion 17-e017dx and am currently typing with an external keyboard.any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all
I have just noticed that my keyboard doesn't work on certain screens. Specifically the system restore screen where I have to label the restore point. I cant type anything in. I don't get the blinking cursor in the input box. I get the italic I cursor when I put the arrow cursor in the box but when I left click to anchor the cursor and start typing nothing happens. So maybe a mouse problem too. I noticed it in a software registration window too. Running windows xp sp3. microsoft usb keyboard and a wireless logitech mouse
Thanks for any help

I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 5558 laptop two days ago. I turned on this laptop and the keyboard doesn't work. I have used the screen keyboard to finish the configuration (date, time, name and more), thinking that the problem was in the configuration, but not.
What's the problem? How Can I solved it?
Thanks. ;)
