Windows 10 Upgrade icon on desktop. Remove?

Q: Windows 10 Upgrade icon on desktop. Remove?

I manually upgraded to the W10 anniversary upgrade. Since then I have a "Windows10 Upgrade" shortcut icon on my desktop from the file "Windows10UpgraderApp.exe" in the C:\Windows10Upgrade folder.

Now that the upgrade is all done and history, do I still need this icon or even the C:\Windows10Upgrade folder on my pc?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Windows 10 Upgrade icon on desktop. Remove?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have a kiosk PC that is looking pretty good however I have two outstanding issues.

The users can still right click on applications on the taskbar and receive a context menu even though I've disabled the context menu in the group policy editor.
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar - Enabled

And I can't figure out how to remove the "show desktop" icon in the systems notification tray.

Thanks in advance for any help
Megan Armstrong.

A:Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

   a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
   b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad x301 using Windows Vista Business. When I use a hot key such as the one for the screen brightness, the one for the screen light, or the mute function, I get an odd large "icon" on the desktop that will not go away. I have to turn the computer off and then turn it back on to get rid of it. The appearance of the "icon" varies depending what function it is "displaying" but it is always black and white. Help!

A:Can't Remove Odd Icon on Desktop

I know what indicators you're talking about, as I had the caps lock indicator on my Thinkpad staying on the screen so I searched for the setting.  Go to Display Settings in the Control Panel, click on Change Display Settings on left menu, then on Advanced Settings and another box comes up.  Then click the On Screen Display tab and you'll see the settings for what you're referring too, the fade out time should be set to just a few seconds so those adjustments don't remain on the screen.  You'll also see the Caps lock icon setting there also, at least that's how it is on my model. I hope this helps!

Hi

I am running Windows XP Home SP2. I have an icon on my desktop that refuses to be deleted - it is called "Sony Ericsson File Manager" installed with my Sony Ericsson PC Suite as a necessary feature for transferring files via USB between my phone and my laptop.

When I right-click on it, there is no option to delete.
When I drag it into the recycle bin, or when I select it and hit 'delete', nothing happens
When I run desktop cleanup wizard, Windows says "Cannot move file: the name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name".

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello again! It's been a while since I needed help and now I'm back.

I have a Dell desktop that my husband used at work to connect to internet only. When he brought the computer home it was infected with many popups and redirects. I was able to clear up all the problems on the computer, but have not felt 100% satisfied that it was completely clean and so we only use it occasionally to go on the internet. Now my HP computer has died and I need to use this one (Dell desktop).

Today, I noticed two desktop icons: "Live PC Help" and "Thickness." I googled "Live PC Help" and find that it is a virus and needs to be removed. I need help with the removal so I don't mess up the computer.

I've also googled "Thickness" and can't find anything on this so not sure what to do. Is it a virus also? Is it legit?

Any help you can offer in removing the Live PC Help virus could be greatly appreciated.

I've seen solutions posted all over for removing the desktop icon from appearing in windows 7 when you press alt+tab, but this does not seem to apply the change to the win+tab shortcut.

I added a DWORD called 'AltTabSettings' in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and set the value to 1, is this supposed to work for both alt+tab and win+tab?

If not, anyone know how to do this? It would make win+tab (which is much prettier of an effect than alt+tab) much more effective.

I don't know if that would get rid of the icon or not but I am afraid to click leave the homegroup because they said my windows was corrupted and they fixed it. (This thread could fall under several forums, but technically it's an XP registry change, so I put it here.)

I recently removed Zenworks and the Novell client from a workstation. If you've ever uninstalled those applications, you know it can be a serious pain sometimes, and many files are not removed.

In this case, the Application Explorer icon was left on the desktop after uninstallation. The problem is, there is no obvious way to remove it. It is plain white, and has no "Delete" option if you right click on it. So how do you make this go away? After much searching I found the answer. Maybe this will show up in a Google search and help someone else in the future.

Delete this key from the registry (XP):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Desktop\NameSpace\ {CF8EF420-3DF3-11d0-AC35-00C04FD9338A}

It should have the value"Application Explorer" or a custom name if you have changed it. It may be that the key "{CF8EF420-3DF3-11d0-AC35-00C04FD9338A}" is not always the same for every installation of Zenworks, so again, double check the value before you delete.

If you're removing Zenworks from many workstations, create a .reg file with the entry including a leading "-", and you can just double click it and watch the icon disappear. The easiest way to make this is to find the entry you want to delete. Export it. Edit that .reg file so there is a leading "-" in front of the entry.... Read more

A:Tip: Remove Zenworks Application Explorer Icon From Desktop

I don't know to many Netware people around here. I haven't supported it for a couple of years but I would like to know what version of Zenworks you were using. I can't say that I ever ran into this problem when I was using it. When I use to do this I would make sure that I would unregister the workstation first. Then uninstall Zenworks and then uninstall the client.

Until yesterday, I was able to remove the color background (completely) from the desktop icon text when I right-clicked on the desktop, next clicked "Arrange Icons by..", and then deselected "Lock Web Items on Desktop".

For some reason this technique no longer works. This is just a nuisance, and not a serious problem, but I would appreciate it if someone could suggest how else to remove the color backgrounds. And "No", I'm not sure what I may have done to cause this change, except that I have just defragged my hard disk and am in the process of packing the files to the front of the disk.

A:[SOLVED] How can you remove color background from Desktop Icon Text?

Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Advanced tab > Performance > Settings button > Visual Effects tab > "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop".

This will make the icon text background transparent. It's not exactly easy to find or clear what it does from the description, but it works.

I was messing around with folders and stuff in Windows 10, now this Microsoft Office Outlook icon is stuck on my desktop all of a sudden and there is no way to get rid of it.
-Doesn't provide a delete option
-Selecting it and pressing the delete key nor shift+delete works
-Doesn't show up in explorer when you navigate to Desktop folder
-Doesn't appear in search results
-Even trying to open it does nothing
-Is visible when using the Unlocker program, but still no option to delete. Clicking 'OK' just closes Unlocker.

Wasn't really installing anything when I noticed it, and malwarebytes found nothing, so I'm pretty sure it's not a virus or anything.

-Someone told me to "hold shift, right click empty area on desktop, click open command window here in the right click menu, type dir & hit enter, type del "name"" but it didn't show up there either.

-I was asked if I ever had Office 2007 or how old my machine is, but the answer is no and I built this desktop in 2011, just last week did a fresh install of Windows 10 Home. Also, this just appeared today; never before.

-Was told its a registry entry, not a file, and to to look for it in regedit [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ but it's not there

-Told to delete {00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\ but it is also not there.

How to: Remove system "Favorites" icon from Windows 7 desktop. What is a system Favorites icon? When you left click on this icon what opens?
If you have installed a icon on your desktop and no longer want it just drag and drop to recycle bin. This works most of the time. You can also right click on it and go to delete, this also works most of the time. Get back and let us know how thing are going.

Is there a way to remove it from the desktop without venturing into the registry?

A:How Do I Remove the "Homegroups Icon" From My Desktop

Do you mean from Windows Explorer tree?

I don't know of any other way, but it's easily done;

Homegroup - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

The Windows 7 method for removing the homegroup icon from the navigation pain doesn't seem to work, even though the extremely similar method for the libraries icon does. Has anyone managed to remove it? I don't feel like disabling homegroups, Microsoft made setting up a network too annoying without it (unless someone has a guide...)

Here was the old way. It seems to have no effect:

A:How to remove the Homegroup icon in Windows 8?

Hello Pixel Eater,

I just tested the tutorial in Windows 8, and it works if you also do it with these registry locations below as well.

32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder

Only 64-bit Windows 8:

Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder

Hope this helps,
Shawn

See http://venturebeat.com/2015/05/31/microsoft-starts-prompting-windows-7-and-windows-8-users-to-reserve-their-free-windows-10-upgrade/ , nothing to fret over, IMO.

Does anyone know how to remove the little two people icon that appears on the drives when you share them.

Tell me if you know how to. I remember I changed a registry entry when I had vista, I know have Win7 and want to know how to get rid of them.

Lots of research and still no solution.

A:How to Remove Windows 7 Sharing Icon

This works with Vista and it might works with Seven
Go to Regedit and make sure you create restore point before applying this

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Network\SharingHandler\
Name : (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Modify the value and copy this into the value data

"msshrui.dll" for Windows 9x/Me, "ntshrui.dll" for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista
After editing the registry, you need to restart your PC.
feel free to ask
