Recycle bin icons don't change

Q: Recycle bin icons don't change

Not much of a discussion but a bug report. When assigning icons to the recycle bin, they should switch from empty to full and back and they do if the icons you select are from a .dll file but they will not change from empty to fullvica versa if the icons assigned are separate icon files not from an .exe or.dll.The reason is when icons are assigned and the value is writen to the registry, it forgets to add a comma and zero after the icon file name if the icon selected is independent of any other file.In the registry I found Icon_x.ico when it should be Icon_x.ico,0

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not sure where to put this, so i just put it here.

Anyway, i was wondering if anyone knows of any good recycle bin icons. I really hate the current one that i have-- and i really would like to change it.

I guess i'd like something that looks kind of modern, you know?

If you of anything good just let me know.
BTW I also tried to change my firefox icon. ( Here's the link ) But i can't get it to work-- and yes, i did consult the site's faq.

I was also wondering if this could cause any problems w/ firefox.

A:Recycle Bin icons

There are some free icons at this site.

To change the icon in Firefox:
* Go to the folder you installed Firefox in e.g. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
* Then go to the subfolder chrome.
* While in chrome, create a new subfolder called icons
* Then go to that folder and create yet another subfolder called default

The full path to this folder could be
C:\Program Files\MozillaFirefox\chrome\icons\default\
Choose the icon you want to use
(on Windows use .ico files), and then place it in this folder and rename it to main-window.ico on Windows.

OK, I hate the default icons. They are nuggin' fasty. So I want to change the icons. Problem is, the icons don't change unless you refresh the desktop.

I use a blank icon for when the bin is empty. All you see is "Recycle Bin", looks like there's no icon there. The full icon is a full moon. Which means there's stuff in the bin.

I know that you have to run regedit and get into the Registry. Then you have to navigate to the correct keys to slightly modify. I've done it before on XP. Problem is, I can't remember just where you need to go into the Registry. If memory serves, 1 key has to be edited and a zero put on the end. The other one is the same but with a 1.

Please take pity on me and help. I've had a real nasty week. 15hrs trying to repair because an update to hwinfo hosed my system. Had to take it to the shop. $200 later, it's working.

Won't go into details unless someone asks. Trust me, it was a full blown nightmare. Word to the wise. Run as fast as you can, do not walk from Best Buy. Do not pass Go and don't collect $200.

A:Custom icons for Recycle Bin

OK.
I wanted to use custom icons for full & empty recycle bin.
Finally, someone here enlightened me.
The icons need to be in a .dll file.
He made me a .dll file with the needed icons in it.
I am very grateful to him since I find doing something like that a bit over my head.
I have Microangelo & Resource Hacker.
I tried adding icons to existing .dll files & failed.
Creating a .dll file made my tiny brain hurt.
Just stupid I guess.

And I get this message when trying to use Display to change Desktop icons.
I Googled it & tried all suggestions to fix it & failed-

But with Microangelo on Display I can change the icons-

This is a bit complicated so I hope someone can help you with it further.

Now; how do I remove the original recycle bin from the desktop. I've done some goggling and I'm unable to find some clear, simple, straight forward instructions. Having a clean looking desktop is awesome for me but the wife could care less....lol.

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

To show an example (I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand):

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Hi All,

Wondering if you can offer me some pointers here......

Brink put together an excellent tutorial on this process for Windows 7 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tom-icons.html) and with some adaption for the revisions to the Metadata Authoring Wizard contained in the Windows 10 Drivers Kit I have already customised my device icons and even provided some (limited) assistance to others grappling with the task (iPhone shown as Unspecified in Devices and Printers).

All that is, with a couple of pesky exceptions namely the main system icon which remains set at it's somewhat bland generic Windows 10 image and I am at a loss as to how to change it to a more representative custom image....

Secondly, the (ugly) generic icon representing the WiFi Gigabit Router (always shown under the custom name assigned to my network) is inaccessible ("greyed out") such that selecting properties (right click) and bring up the properties dialogue offers the usual "General", "Hardware" and "UPnP" tabs but the "Properties" button on the "Hardware" tab is "greyed out" and thus non of the required Hardware ID's can be accessed.

Returning to the "System" icon customisation I am able to access the Properties and from the Hardware Tab to select "ACPI x64-based PC" from a very comprehensive "System Devices" list and then to select the "Properties" button and from the resulting "... Read more

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

this problem happend to me long time ago and was fixed by itself.. i also format since then so i thought it was gone for good...

anyone know how to fix it? O_o

Compaq laptop nx9005 WinXP

Today when I tried opening a program double clicking one of the shorcut icons on my desktop the recycle bin opened. There are two icons situated above the recycle bin icon that still work normaly. When I click once on any of the other icons below or beside the bin icon, all icons between there and the bin turn dark. If I double click any one of them the bin opens. I can right click sometimes, click Open, and the program will open. Tried deleting and replacing all the offending icons, but the replacements do the same.

When I click once on any of the icons including the two above the bin icon then right click any where else on the desktop, it's as though I'm right clicking on that icon (it's like the entire desktop has turned into that icon except double clicking won't open it unless the cursor is directly on top of it).

Also in Win Explorer, Control Panel for instance, if I click once on Mouse, or whatever, all items in the list all the way to the top turn dark and double clicking brings up a box telling me something to the effect that I'm trying to open too many programs at once. I can click the top item in the list, then right click the specific item I want, click Open and it will open.

I read another post here where the person unplugged his keyboard and restarted then plugged it back in to resolve his problem. I can't unplug mine that easily. Would this be a keyboard, pointing device problem?

And when i select bunch of file by pressing CTRL+A, then it shows option for delet automatically. I am using ASUS K46 Series laptop with windows 8.

Friends I need your help.
I have one [and only one] Windows 8.1 laptop system in a production environment that insists on randomly rearranging desktop icons. There are 2 other laptops in the same office, configured in much the same fashion, plugged into large desktop monitors the same way, that do not exhibit this evil vile behavior. I don't know what is causing it nor how to remedy.

none of the three has dedicated GPU: all are recent vintage systems using variants of intel HD "gpu"s: one lenovo, one hp, one acer [the troubled one]. the only diff is that the problem laptop gets picked up and taken away sometimes. I noticed myself that if I open the lid and boot up the system I'll get a different look to the desktop than when plugged in to the monitor [other than the obvious scaling adjustments]. Icons will move and change appearance, sometimes scaling differently than other times. there is NO auto-arranging selected, no snap to grid. like most people, the user very much needs to set the icons manually and have them remain stable.

any ideas what is going on or how to remedy?

It got rid of Recycle Bin, but a fresh copy didn't appear on reboot, so I reinserted the key {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and I got back the unchangeable Recycle Bin. I tried way two, I booted to safe mode and command prompt, to C:\, and removed the file protections, then took out Recycle Bin. It did not replace it with a copy without the problem. The only problem is the unchanging Recycle Bin, items sent there appear there, and disappear when Recycle Bin is emptied, save the SCANCL problem. I want a way to solve this short of reinstalling the O S.If there is no solution, I can live with it. Mebbe. NO I FREAKING CAN'T. Please some sage from the geek city states save me.

Hello,

My recycle bin full/empty icons won't refresh automatically.

I need to press F-5 key to refresh them.

I have tried lots of ways to fix it.

I think it may have something to do with the icon cache, not sure though.

I am stumped.

I looked in the tutorials here but found nothing.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Odd problem cropped up about a week ago. My boyfriend pointed out that the recycle bin has been renamed to "games (1)". I can't just rename it back either so I've no idea how to fix this. I did try going to the customize desktop feature from display>properties and selecting the restore default option but nothing happens so I'm not sure what else to try.

thanks,
Zelda ;)

A::P Recycle bin icon somehow got renamed, how to I change it back?

Thank you for your help.

A:Recycle Bin only deletes permanently and cannot change settings

SOLVED:

Check for a key called "NoRecycleFiles" in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If present, try setting the value to 0. Alternatively, delete it.

Woke up this morning and the computer rebooted over night, when I logged in my desktop picture is still there but all my desktop icons have disappeared.  Did a quick google search and tried ending the explorer task and running it and still nothing.
Rebooted the computer a couple times and still nothing.  Then figured I'd go look into the registry to see if anything weird was showing in there and nothing.

When I click on the computer it shows my hard-drive is using 100GB of space but when I click on the c drive to view the contents it says that the folder is empty.  Verified that files weren't hidden and even after doing the show hidden files it still
says it's empry.  Windows 7 seems to be operating fine even though it's showing nothing.  Computer boots up fine, the ie icons on the taskbar opens up fine, any command line commands work.

Tried running the sfc scannow and came back clean, chkdsk has come back with no problems either.  Kinda at a loss as I'd rather not reinstall windows and I can't even back up the files I have as they aren't showing up.  I do get the same thing
whether I boot into safe mode or not.

Hi Christian,
Running a System Restore rollback to a previous working date seems to be the best option here, as the incident has been observed only today. If you're unable to run System Restore from Windows, you may try running it from Windows RE.Ramesh Srinivasan | The Winhelponline Blog

It's been here for half a year already but it never showed up on my antivirus (avast), or my malwarebytes. Recently it's gotten worst. Before I could just press esc and it will stop but now no matter what every time I click on an icon it will ask me to send the icons to the recycle bin. I tried restoring it doesn't work.

I liked the recycle bin icons used in Windows 8 better than Windows 10, so I changed them successfully to the Win 8 version. But, the new icons do not change to reflect full / empty even though both have been changed. The standard Win 10 recycle bin icons do work okay when I returned to defaults.

Any ideas why the new ones don't change as they should?

I got a external hard drive, it means it has a individual Recycle Bin in F: Drive, separate it with the Recycle Bin of the computer in C: Drive.

But my computer was installed with Windows 7 again after a reparation, and now has a new unique identifier called Security ID or SID. for example: S-1-5-21-3225745820-1949245524-1067675123-1000

When I plugin the external drive the Recycle Bin looks empty, but the hard drive has the same space in megas used in the disk.

And now the Recycle Bin folder located in the external hard drive which is linked to my previous SID number of Windows 7, is hidden. In "Folder Options" I unhide the protected files and i found the previous Recycle Bin folder with the SID number
in it, but the names of the files has changed like $I0UFUJO, $I0U9PNS, $I1I2OMR, etc. and the original path file when was erased has dissapear.

Please, let me know how to recover my previous Recycle Bin files with their original names and path location before was deleted, because I need to get some of those files and in their original location and delete the others to free space from the disk. I am
using a Virtual Machine for doing that, just in case. Thanks.

Bye.

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Any thoughts, help or suggestions would be appreciated, and if this article happens to already exist somewhere I do apologise for cluttering the forum up here as I've not been able to find anything specific so far.

A:How to change icons?

Icon Packs are workable with a program in which environment the pack is made . Usually there are Stardock iconpacks working with IconPackager , TuneUp Iconpacks working with TuneUp Utilities or standalone iconpacks those come with an installer command .

What is the type you do have ?

This hardly seems worth creating a thread about, but is it possible to change where new icons are placed on the desktop? If I right-click and create something from the New menu, it appears as the last icon. However, if I extract rars, download files, and programs they get stuck right near the top between other icons.

I'm trying to change the default battery and wireless tray icons to be what they were on Windows XP. I'm using this program to do it, just pasting over the pictures with ones I made based off of XP's. But whenever I do anything, it just leaves a blank icon in the taskbar. What am I doing wrong? I'm attaching the pictures from XP's dll, the picture this program expects, and my half-edited version of the latter file. Hopefully someone can help.
