Unable to save Word documents

Q: Unable to save Word documents

Hi all
Can anyone help me with a problem I have in Word 2000?

Details:

***********************

Windows 2000 Professional
Office 2000.

***********************

If open a blank word document, type something and click file>save as, nothing happens. I cannot save anything. It simply doesnt work. I dont get any errors either.

If I click start>run and type winword /a and try saving a document it works fine!

Things I have tried:

1. detect and repair (took 4 hours!!)
2. deleted normal.dot to create a new one.
3. Deleted the 9.0 key in the registry.
4. Removed and reinstalled Office 2000.
5. Searched MSKB and google.com

No resolutions so far!

Maybe its a setting somewhere?

Any ideas?

thanks

Preferred Solution: Unable to save Word documents

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all,

I've just got this new laptop, a Dell XPS M1530, which I got at christmas, it got Vista Home premium.
It worked all fine, or this last week when I was writing on a school project in Word, and I felt I was done, I wanted to save the document of course. But then I clicked the "Save As" button. The browsing window came up, but it didnt respond. I found it also happens with Excel and PowerPoint.

I'm no computer genius, but I would guess it might be a problem with the "office pack"? I got the whole office pack with the computer.

I've tried to run Norton scanning but didn't find anything.

Any suggest how I could solve this problem?

Would be very grateful if anyone could help me, thanks.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

I'm running Word 2013. Up till a week or so it worked fine, but now it freezes completely whenever I try to save or save as a document, new or modified, in my C:\Users\Tom\Documents folder, even though it does seem to save or save as correctly if I choose subfolders in ...documents or other separate folders.

I have tried running Word in safe mode. No help.

I have done a complete repair using control panel/programs...no help. It seemed to have uninstalled MS Office 2013 completely and reinstalled it completely, and nothing improved. One minor problem I have with this is that I've lost my product key from the original version, and I can't retrieve it from Dell, where I bought the machine, so I can't activate the reinstalled MS Office 2013! It'll run till next Tuesday, then it'll be dead. My bad, but that's not what's causing me this grief.

I have checked the hard drive with AVG PCTuneup disk doctor and found no errors. I've defragged with that routine also; no help.

I've tried running Word with and without first launching any browser. The problem occurs whether or not I've launched a browser.

To my untrained eye, it seems as if whenever I try to point Word to my normal ...documents folder, to retrieve a doc stored there so I can work on it, or save a new doc there that I've just created, or "save as" a doc I've retrieved from a different folder, Word can't find that spot on my hard drive. But i... Read more

What is the exact error message you get (or a screen shot of the error)?
Is your copy of Office 2010 legit and legal and properly activated?
Have you tried a Repair?

Hello. I need your help. I am having an issue with the program PDF Viewer Plus (Pro) by Nuance. This program is of a component of a larger program called Nuance PaperPort 12 Professional. PaperPort is a scanner software program that works with many manufacturers? scanners out there. You can scan to create many kinds of documents, like jpeg and PDF documents. I have personal opinions of Nuance ? both +/- ones. The reason why I am here is for a negative one. Nuance technical support charges a pretty penny after its 90-day free support period. So that is why I am here. Nuance?s business model is terrible! People complain about their business practices, plus their software programming all the time and I do not blame them. They took over ScanSoft, a very good former company with a good product, years ago and only recently has Nuance done some work to improve their acquired useful and feature loaded products. Still Nuance products are full of bugs and issues. Their activation policies are terrible and very rigid, but I like their products for their features so I spend money for them.
Anyways, my issue ? After I scanned the documents, they automatically saved on PaperPort?s desktop as a PDF document. Now, the pages of the document on PaperPort?s desktop are all upside down (scanned that way, not intentional) in a small PDF icon. I say, no problem. I will open up (click on) the PDF document to open PDF Viewer Plus and use the ?Rotate View? option. I do and all the pages in the PDF d... Read more

My laptop has been running extremely slowly lately. I have uninstalled firefox and norton (which i couldnt get to run and have been unable install AVG) tried defragging and going back to an older restore point, all to no effect.

It loads up ok, but if i am online or running a program it runs extremely slow or freezes altogether. I have been unable to run norton antivirus or superantispyware without the machine turninng off, even during safe mode.

I have run the first steps but GMER freezes and i have been unable to save the file log. I have run it 3 times, during the second attempt, the machine shut down with a BSOD (not had this problem previously) I havent been able to save the text document reports from any of the programs - i recieve an error message that there isnt sufficient memory.

A:Unable to Saving documents in Word

Heidi, have you tried all the different methods of saving documents in Word, including clicking on File, Save As, and instead of trying to save documents via the File link, clicking on the Windows orb in the upper-left corner of the screen and there, clicking the Save or Save As buttons?

Also, you might want to go into your Word Options, first to the Save section, and see whether your settings are what you want. Then go to the Advanced section and scroll way down to the Save section to see if changing some of those options would make a difference.

When you're finished, don't forget to go all the way down to the bottom of the screen to either make the changes to just that document or to all future documents based on that template.

A:Unable to save as word 2000 to 98 machine

If the place where you are trying to save your file is unavailable, save the file to a different location.

If you have tried to use an unusual character in the file name, remove it from the file name.

For example, the error message

The folder "(path)" isn't accessible. It may be on an unavailable volume, or protected with a password."

...is either caused by a genuinely unavailable destination, or it can be caused by having the "<" or ">" symbol in the file name.

Or.... Click Save As and save the file as an .rtf file insted.

Suddenly unable to save a file in Excel. No warnings etc. Blissfully working (and saving) along but when I boot up again later I found the file 'not saved' but a random number file eg; BDF45000 in directory. Opens up in Excel but with only some data.

I did:
Run repair, Office 2003 Proff. (No change)
Check for 'read only' (Not the problem)
Use Reg Mechanic, cleaned up and defragged... (No change)
Save under different name. (No change)

I use AVG... could it be that a third party app interferes with a 'proper save'?.. or AVG interference whilst excel tries to save? I am a bit paranoid at this stage... not trusting the pc. Ideas?

Need help trying to save a word 2007 document. Am running Windows Vista. I have been working on this document for the past couple of days, a high school maths investigation with lots of equations and graphs copied over from 'Autograph' a 3d graphing software. I have been able to save it with ease with all this stuff on it until an hour ago. When I press CTRL+S it opens up the save as box (even though i've already saved it before). Then when i press save in this dialog box the box closes for a half a second before opening again without me pressing anything. I do it again and again and notice the little loading bar that tells you it's saving in the bottom right hand corner of the document gets stuck and then stops when the box opens up again. I've tried to rename it and this doesn't work. i copied it into an old word document and then saved that document and that document wouldn't save either. i got rid of it off that document and the old document saved perfectly. I closed it just to check it was actually not saving and it isn't. Is there something wrong with my document? or is it word? please help!

Greetings,

I'm a former IT Systems Technician, and my girlfriend is a work-from-home writer. I've recently migrated her PC's original processor and ram from an HP motherboard to an ASRock board, linking the original WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive to the board as a secondary drive to collect documents and storage from, while running Windows 8.1 (up to date) on a Seagate Barracuda 250GB for the main OS and programs drive.

With those specs out there in the open, now it's time to get to the root of the problem.

As a work-from-home writer, my girlfriend depends on the ability to save her documents to Microsoft's OneDrive and upload them to her publisher, but with this error showing up, she cannot get them to save. I have never seen such a message in my many years of IT service, and I'm completely baffled.

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

Unable to open Microsoft Office documents(excel, word) in Internet Explorer when we enforce strict TLS 1.2 protocol (Disabling SSL v2,SSL v3,TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1)on the webserver. We tested by removing strict TLS 1.2 and IE is able to open the document fine.
Error description : We see a Microsoft Excel Security Warning with the following content.
Certificate error
The application experienced an internal error loading the SSL libraries.

When we disabled SSL V2 and SSL V3, the document opens fine but when TLS 1.0 is disabled we are seeing the  pop-up with certificate error. We tried to open the reports in CSV format, 2007 format and 2003 format and all of them have the same issue. Does
Internet Explorer have any restrictions when TLS 1.2 is strictly enabled ?

Note : We are able to download the document using Internet explorer and the document opens fine from local but opening the document from the browser fails with certificate error.

Hello,
For some reason, when I click on on Microsoft Works, I get a quick flash of it trying to open & then NOTHING!!
I have sooo many important saved documents that I really need to be able to open again...
I have gotten rid of Microsoft Money & maybe Microsoft Office as well but not sure...
Any ideas on what I can try??

A:HELP!!! Microsoft Works Word Processor will not open, unable to open ANY documents!!!

From how you describe it,it looks as if something is denying it.such as your firewall or if you are using Firefox you might not have it as allowed, these are just guesses however, take a look at this site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241165

Whenever I save a file or WANT to save a file to the desktop, I go to "Save As" and it always wants to revert to saving to the documents folder instead of the desktop making me have to take the extra step to choose desktop instead of the computer just realizing thats where I want it to go.

In the documents folder for Library Locations I have removed anything with the word "documents" so the one and only location listed in Documents Library now is "C:\Users\Username\Desktop".

Yet when I make a new document and go to "save as" it is still wanting to save to documents despite being removed from the library locations.

On more than 2 occasions now I was in a hurry and went to save as but didn't check the location assuming it was going to go to the desktop which is where its supposed to but instead had to waste time hunting down some random folder the file went to.

Is there any way to make it so the "Save As" option cannot see or does not realize there is a documents folder (Kind of like how malware can hide from AntiVirus) and default to saving my files to the desktop on the first try without having to manually select desktop location?

A:Save to Desktop -vs- Save to Documents

What program are you saving the document from? Many programs have a preference setting somewhere for you to tell it the default location to save or open documents.

For instance, here's the default Save location setting for Word 2013:

I am using Word 2013 on my laptop. Windows 8 was operating system. Recently upgraded to Windows 10. When I save Word documents now, they are saved as Wordpad documents. (.xml files) Wordpad does not recommend some of the Word formatting and alters the documents.

How do I correct this? I want the save as Word documents, as I did in the past.

Thank you.

A:word documents saved as wordpad documents

In Word try the file tab > Options >Save. You should be able to change to a default of .docx .

I searched all over the web and micorsoft's web site. I tried every suggestion made such as:

Disconnect net work drives.
Rename Normal.dotm
Run office diagnostics
Disconnect HP Printers
Finally this worked:

and run Mr. Fixit.

I hope this saves you some time. I spent over 2 hours.

Running Windows 7 on my desktop. (MS Word on my Windows 10 Dell laptop is trouble-free.) It constantly freezes (every 3rd or 4th time I save during an editing session) on save or save as....have to reboot the program. Happens on all docs. Looked this issue up online, the "solutions" didn't work for anyone. I uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail....it was solid for 3 days, now back to freezing. Any ideas?

Hi folks,

I have this problem that is hard to search for on Google. We have a lot of word 2000 documents connected to a simpel text data file (data.doc) that is used with mail merge.

Here is our process:
1.) data.doc is opened, filled with all variablenames we can use in our documents (name, country, etc.)
2.) data.doc is opened, filled with the actual data (from a database) belonging to the variables name (Kees, Japan, etc.)
3.) Our vb.net 2008 application does step 1 and 2, then starts a template word 2000 document which has that data.doc file attached for mail merge. The template is now filled in with the correct data.
4.) vb.net 2008 application tells MS Word to print the document.
5.) Works fine and we have ourselves a nice document filled in with data we specified in the vb.net 2008 application.

Now comes the problem, some new computers will have office 2007 instead of office 2000 installed, during testing we have encountered that it does not error but the office 2007 installed computer does not fill in the data and just shows mergefield names <<name>> <<country>>. Also when printed out. So it seems like the datafile is not connected when opening the template in word 2007.

If we let our vb.net 2008 application show us the document visually first, we can re-attach the data file again and we can print the data, however there are 3 thing wrong with this approach:

1.) More user input which is not needed.
2.) MS Word is opening and showing, somet... Read more

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, Office 2007

I know how to save documents created in Word 2007 so it can be used with Word 2003 done manually.

Can someone inform me whether I can set my "save as" so documents created in Word 2007 will be always saved as default to be compatible with Word 2003?

A:Saving Documents Created in Word 2007 to be Compatible with Word 2003

You can us this compatibility update to read Office 2007 docs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) In earlier versions of Office - Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. Meaning you can save your Word docs in their original format and Word 2003 will read them.

You might want to check this link out as well - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...444731033.aspx

As far as setting a "default" save, to be honest, I'm not sure if this can be done or not.

Hope this helps.

If I open up a link which has a word document, IE 11 will download and open it. If i then leave word open and then go to another link to and try to download
and open up another word document, the window doesn't become active and it sits minimised in the taskbar flashing. If I click on it to give focus it opens and shows the document I downloaded. This is very annoying. Does anyone have any ideas? I have tried
loading both word in safe mode and IE with no addins and still get the same behaviour.

I am using word 2010 and windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron 5559. I have reinstalled my printer and it's drivers and I have checked that the text colour is not white.
I am having problems with printing word documents. Within a word document any images print fine, as do the lines in a table but no text will print (in any colour).
I can see the text correctly in the word print preview panel.
Even the print test page prints with no text.

Can you help? Thanks

I have a Toshiba A55 laptop. I am running XP Home SP2 and Office Professional 2003 SP2. All utilites function normally with the exception of Word. The file menu shows "save" and "save as" to be disabled (greyed out). It will save with control-S, and I am able to save to any location I want. I am not receiving any error messages. All updates for XP and Office are current. No viruses or other malware. I have seen issues with Ofice SP2 concerning HP systems but they usually either lock up or generate errors. I do not have either of these problems. I have been looking for a solution for a few days to no avail. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Word 2003 save/save as disabled

I found my own solution. Apparently, the normal.dot template became corrupted. Deleted the file, and did not let word reload the saved version, creating a new one. Fixed the problem. Wanted to post in case someone else was dealing with the same issue.

Recently I typed a new Word document and somehow I couldn't print it. It offered Safe Mode so I tried that.

Now not just the new documents but ALL my Word documents have funny little paragraph-looking symbols scattered throughout and dots between every single word. How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Word documents filled with dots after every word

In your toolbar, click the pilcrow (the backward paragraph looking thing). That should fix the problem.

Is there any way to convert everything over to Word? I hate to think I need to save each and every document in Word BEFORE installing all of the records to the new system. Is it possible to transfer everything as is and then convert to Word afterward?
