B button moves cursor and irregular trackpoint behavior on Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen)

Q: B button moves cursor and irregular trackpoint behavior on Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen)

So, I got this computer a few days ago and it works great. Only problem is that every time I switch out of tablet mode or if I open it, my cursor moves up, and I have to tap the trackpoint a lot in order for it to stop. I took it off and I realized that if I hold down the b button hard enough, it actually moves the cursor up. Is there any way to fix this irregular trackpoint behavior? It's probably hardware related, so I might have to send it in for repair (ugh).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,  I'm experiencing really annoying problem. Sometimes when I working on my computer, the cursor goes crazy - moves spontaneously, rapiddly cliks on the screen (there is visible animation as if I use my finger to touch the screen), closes/maximises/minimases windows, and so one.  It is really the issue! I've already lost a lot of work because of that.  So what sould I do? Replece it? Or some SW patch?  Thanks for help! VS

See this thread. It?s a hardware issue, so replacement or warranty repair are the two options. Sorry you ran into this!

Hi all,

I have a very strange problem for which I have not found a solution to online. I have a home-built Asus desktop (spec below) that has had some behavioral problems almost from day 1 (I've had this computer for nearly 2 years).

1. The first thing I noticed was that sometimes when clicking and holding on the title bar of an application, the application window starts moving (by itself) towards the right. You can mimic this behavior if you click and hold the mouse button on a window title bar, then press the right arrow on your keyboard. See video here (poor capture quality, the window 'jumps' in the video, but is smooth in real life).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyT-IcuXplA

2. Next behavior noticed was when using irfanview in slideshow mode, requiring a key press to advance each slide, but suddenly the slides start advancing by themselves in rapid succession (maybe 10 to 20 slides per second).

3. Then I started having problems with dialog boxes, the buttons would flash as if they were being activated in some way. When I clicked on a drop down menu, no matter which item I selected, something would drive the focus down to the very last item in the menu. Dialogs that required administrator privilege (like installing software) often refuse to accept button clicks, with the buttons flashing back and forth (as if the tab key were being very rapidly pressed). See video here:

4. The cursor sometimes dri... Read more

I was recently given a brand new Thinkpad X1 Extreme. The problem is that the cursor is moving diagonally from the bottom left to the upper right corners  (or parallel lines of this one) while I am typing. The movement is clearly activated when I press keys around the trackpoint (G, H, B) and especially H. The cursos most of the times will stop moving if I press again H.  I need to solve this: 1. I tried TouchFreeze but this deactivates only the touchpad when typing.  2. Is it possible to just deactivate the red trackpoint without deactivating the two physical buttons? I need these buttons. 3. Is there some other software solution? I would appreciate any help.

i just got a Yoga 3 Pro running windows 10.  This is the first time i have ever used a laptop where the click area of a touch pad also moves the cursor.  i've had many laptops over the years and have never seen this.   Is this right?   i find it annoying as it causes cursor freezes.  until click is let off, one cannot move the cursor with the pad area with the index finger.  or touching both click and pad area will cause a zoom.  just wondering what others think, and if this might be a windows 10 occurance. i have the latest synapics driver (75 mb driver!!) tried that already.   there are no settings i can see to adjust this behavior. much thanks for any feedback!

A:Yoga 3 Pro touch pad click also moves cursor

I noticed this too. My solution, fortunately, is also the way I prefer to work. I use tap-to-click in mouse settings so I don't have to actually click on the trackpad. And a two-finger tap is a right mouse click. Once I got used to working this way i could never go back to the old way of actually pressing down and clicking on the trackpad. As a side note, I also use Linux Mint way more than Windows 10.

I've owned ThinkPad laptops for the past 20 years.  My most recent purchase was a ThinkPad X1 Yoga running Windows 10.  My prior version was a ThinkPad Edge 520 with Windows 7. What I've noticed is that the "sensitivity" option is no longer available for the TrackPoint mouse.  I've attached a screenshot of the old Ultranav utility which allowed for the sensitivity to be adjusted from Light to Heavy touch.  On the new version, there is only the option to adjust the speed from Slow to Fast (which was also available on the prior version). I have no idea what the sensitivity is set by default, but it's definitely not a Light touch.  This is annoying especially if you have to scroll through log pages (web page or documents).  This is a real annoyance because it is so much more diffcult to use the TrackPoint, so much so, I'm debating whether to buy a mouse, which I haven't used in over 20 years. Anyway we could get UltraNav to add that functionality in soon???

I have had a Yoga Ultrabook for about 6 months, and about 3 months ago the cursor started to move on its own.  I don't know why or what it is doing.  Even if my hands are no where near the keys it jumps.  I have called Lenovo and they say it needs a new touchpad, but that is turned off, I never use it, I only use the little red button.  I've owned Thinkpads for 20 years, literally.  But Im a user not a computer person.  Does anyone else have a suggestion before I box this up and send it to Lenovo?  Is there a lenovo person on here who can respond?  The person I talked to wasn't exactly cooperative about could it be something else.   I will of course ship it back it I need to.  I've been limping along with it and it seems to be getting worse.  Or at least no better. I've downloaded every current available thing that I've been sent.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi, I couldn't find any working solution via Google, so I hope somebody can help with this... I installed a fresh Windows 10 Pro on the Lenovo Yoga S1 and now the three buttons above the touchpad are not working, the TrackPoint is working fine. I tried Installing the Mouse  Touchpad driver from the support website (UltraNav 19.0.17.140) but no change. The update utility does not suggest anything to install. In device manager there are two unknown devices:ACPI\INT33A0\0ACPI\BCM2F10\0 This might have to do something with it... On the support website I cannot see any ACPI driver for this model, is this right?  ThanksGideon

I have a two year old Thinkpad Yoga 370 running Windows 10  that I just love, but over the last year it's developed incurable trackpoint drift.  I've tried adjusting the sensitivity updating every driver I can think of, but still nothing.  I've just disabled it because its so maddening.  If I turn it on it will work for a few minutes, but then it will drift the cursor to the lower left corner of the screen and wobble back and forth in a small area.  Applying steady pressure 'up' and 'left' for a few seconds appears to re-calibrate it somewhat but within a minute or two it does the same thing.   Some questions: On this machine, what hardware driver controls the trackpoint & who is the manufacturer? Has anyone found a solution to this other than replacing the keyboard? (a frightful job) I've heard of other users who replaced the keyboard and the trackpoint drift came right back again.  Surely Lenovo must have some way for us to solve this issue.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12 2nd gen with these specs: -Processor: Intel core i5-5300U-Ram: 8GB-Hard Drive: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD (installed by myself) and SanDisk 16GB PCIe M.2-Screen: Full HD 10 point multi-touch with Wacom digitizer-BIOS: JEET78WW (1.27) The trackpad and trackpoint on this laptop has stopped working the second time and with that, the CPU fan has halted as well, with the backlit function of the keyboard non-working as well. The fan is really important because my heavy-duty use of this machine makes it really hot real quick. My laptop is pretty much useless without it and want a solution for it. I did try to update my BIOS for this because on some forums, this was an issue fixed by updating their BIOS. The system does not recognize the Synaptics trackpad and trackpoint (yes the TRACKPOINT is not working as well) and I have tried downloading the drivers of the trackpad, but to no luck the system did not recognize the trackpad. It seems as if there is a faulty connection physically, but I could not figure it out. The first time it happened, I sent it back for an in Depot Service, but this time around, I am out of warranty and when I asked a ThinkPad Certified Technician, he recommended me to simply buy a new machine rather than getting it serviced because it would cost me more than half as much of the original price of my laptop. I really like this laptop and don't want to change it, but if I have to, the 8th generation Intel pro... Even while typing the subject line of this thread, I had to retype it a couple of times as the left button triggered unknown clicks on the web page loading another while my left thumb unintentionally and inevitably rested on it. Happening quite frequently with random cliks being registered. Adjusting sensitivity of the trackpoint or touchpad does not have any effect. I don't see any other settings. Did anyone ever face this? Is there perhaps a firmware/software approach to fix such things? I jut bought this Yoga in November, did not start to really use it since a few days ago and is why I just noticed this way after the return period, and I don't want to go to the hassle of warranty claim if there's a software workaround.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

I got this very strange problem with my Yoga 460 that I can not solve on my own. When my power is low and I plug in the AC adapter the mashine gets very slow. A quick check on my CPU-Z stats shows that something prevents the CPU to exit its power saving mode (Multiplier fixed at 4x). I observed this problem up to a power level of 30%, after that the laptops runs smooth again. The mashine does not enter a software power saving mode visible to me. The problem is consistent when I manually set the power plan to "high performance". What could be the origin of this problem?

Drivers are all updated to the latest through Lenovo driver update process.Since it is partially fixed by driver enable / disable function, I suspect it is software and not hardware issue, however can not pinpoint it. Other clues to solve this mistery: 1)It is plugged in (not on battery) 2) HID-compliant touch screen driver is Microsoft version (10.0.16299.15) Driver date 6/21/2006 (Maybe old?) I hope somebody can help.Thank you.

Ok, most of us know about this problem but I've not heard of any solution and I am becoming convinced that it is a software issue and not just a hardware/design flaw.... If one were to hold on the trackpoint, pushing it in one direction or another for too long, the computer starts to take control over the pointer and it fights against the direction you want to go. If you let go at this point entirely, the mouse cursor moves all on it's own. A work-around so far, is to occasionally let go of the trackpoint during use, and if you do this often enough, the problem just doesn't happen in the first place. But sometimes it's easy to forget this, and when that happens, it's an annoyance to an otherwise awesome design that overall just works... I want to work with the community on fixing this if we can, or getting help from the developers/drivers if need be. One thing, I have noticed, is that if you get the problem to occur (or purposely strive to re-produce the issue) the only way to get it to stop is to wait several seconds until the cursor completely stops moving.  If you try to fight against the cursor, or move in any direction, you just end up delaying the amount of time it takes for the issue to go away, so it's best to just sit and wait it out for a second while this is happening.  You could literally keep interrupting/fighting against it, and it will continue on in error until you give up.  Because of this, I suspect that an adjustment ... A:Trackpoint moves on it's own..... (Lenovo X220T)

From wikipedia: "A common problem of pointing sticks is the inability to identify the zero position (the position indicating no user touch). A typical solution, which reflects the fact that user operation of the pointing stick is rarely constant, is to interpret any absence of change of pressure (over a given interval, perhaps one or several seconds) as meaning the user has released the stick. If the user applies exactly constant pressure to the stick for such an interval, this method mistakenly re-zeroes the stick. Then additional pressure is required to achieve the same movement of the screen cursor, and the cursor spontaneously moves in the opposite direction when the user releases the stick. If the user avoids touching the stick, the error ends when the stick detects the real zero position." It's a fundamental flaw of any trackpoint device. The trackpoint is not a moving part so there is no natural way to calibrate for (x,y)=(0,0) that would be accurate for more then a few seconds of use. Once you understand why this happens you can even replicate the issue whenever you like by applying constant pressure in any direction; eventually the software will think this pressure state is zero and your mouse will stop moving, and when you let go the cursor will drift in the opposite direction at the same speed you started pushing at. The solution to the problem when you get drift is as you say, just let go for a second and the software will rezero the trackpoint.

Thanks for the review. I have been noticing irregular IE behavior recently, but hey, I'm using MS products. Episodically, I would open up a browser window (typically Google search webpage), and receive the website not found message, when I had a perfectly functioning and stable wireless network. For instance, on the same day that Google had artwork honoring the anniversary for summitting Mt Everest on my user account, my Admin account showed the standard Google search page, not the enhanced version, although I was not using the website offline and my connection was live.I maintain an Admin account for maintenance, but usually log into a user account for my stuff, as do my kids. Hi, Everyone- when typing on a new Asus EEE 1015, with Win 7, the cursor will suddenly jump backwards to an earlier spot in the text. This happens a lot, and makes it difficult to type anything.

I googled and saw this problem for many systems and OSs, but it seems like mainly a laptop and netbook problem. some people have erduced sensitivity on touchpads, or have updated touchpad drivers, or have installed a program that disconnects the touchpad when the keys are being used.

We know we are not touching the touchpad accidentally. you can really perch your fingers way above, and the jump still happens. We have decreased the sensitivity on the touchpad, and the jumping still happens.

We also have an Asus EEE 1005 Win XP, for almost a year, with absolutely no cursor jumping.

Any info specific to this set-up? I would love to hear any insights, before I go into a long routine of upgraing BIOS, upgrading touchpad drives, etc.

A:Cursor jumping Asus Eee 1015, cursor moves when typing

As the PC is new I would return it under warranty as this is most likely a hardware issue.

The only quick fix that might work is to reinstall the touchpad drivers from the Asus site. You could also check in the touchpad settings to see what is set for making the cursor disappear during typing, change the setting from whatever it is at present and see if that helps.

Hope I'm in the right forum for this new model.I have a brand new Thinkpad Yoga (20CD-CT01WW), running windows 8.1 64-bit, 8g RAM.  Intel Core i7-4600U @ 2.10Ghz / 2.70GhzWhen using any progam in desktop mode (first noticed it on Chrome, then Quicken, but really applies to any use), the cursor will randomly jump across the screen, ususally to the upper right, and then without clicking, will close the window I'm working on, often losing my work. Sometimes I'll get random right-click menus without clicking the mouse buttons.I am using the track-point primarily, so thinking it might be inadvertent contact with the touchpad, I disabled all touch-pad functionality, but the problem persists.I ran Norton Internet security, AdAware, and Malwarebytes to look for viruses but didn't find any problems.Just ran Lenovo update, and downloaded the most recent Ultra-Nav Driver.  Now both touch-pad and track-point are using default settings, but the problem still persists.  I'm wondering if this a hardware or driver problem, or a windows 8.1 problem? Please advise.  (home user... neophite, I know just enough about compters to be dangerous.)

I did recover it to factory state few times, that doesn't solve following problem: If attached to the OneLink Pro, the cursor jumps from time to time to the bottom right corner of screen. While doing so it also making a click, so icons in taskbar are activated. That happens sporadically, but in overall like once per hour. It does not happen if I let the lid opened.

I recently got my new X1 Yoga and had to realize, that it wont wake up after the screen goes dark by pressing the power button. Only pressing a key on the keyboard made it wake up, which is a total pain in the ass in tablet mode, as having to fold it back completely defeats the purpose of having a tablet. After some investigation I found out, that this only happens when runnning on battery and it seems to be a regression, since it's only not working with BIOS 1.29 and 1.30. I've tried downgrading to 1.12 and it works, still working in 1.27. Any suggestions?

When logging in, the screen says you can do the usual Ctrl+Alt+Del or use the Windows Security button to sign in. In tablet mode, for example, the keyboard is not present but I cannot figure out what the Windows Security button is.  The little Windows icon button at the bottom of the screen does not work.  Should it?

Anyone?  Basically, how does one log into the machine while in tablet mode without the physical keyboard.  Many thanks.

Hello all,  I have a long standing issue with my Thinkpad Yoga 12 (20DL000SIV):Cursor behaves erratically, jumping to different areas of the screen and causing fake "clicks".This has been going on for more than a year now. These are the solutions I've tried:- Update to latest drivers.- Format and clean setup of Windows.- Disconnect all external devices (mouse, monitors)This happens every few minutes, doesn't matter if I'm working with a docking station or not or if the lid is opened or closed.I have no Ad-aware software installed (some suggested it might be causing the issue). Tried to disable the touch pad with no effect. However, when I've disabled all touchscreen devices in Device Manager it went away but of course my touch screen was disabled. Any idea as to what might be causing it? Hardware issues? I am capable of replacing the screen assembly myself but wouldn't want to go ahead with it if there's a chance for a different source of the problem or simpler solution. Thank you in advance.

Hi,I have a X1 Yoga 1st Gen that will boot after being shut down into a black screen with just a mouse cursor visible.  It will sit at this screen forever until power down completely, then power up again.  After this power down=>up cycle, the OS will go a blue loading page, and sit there for about 2-3 minutes.  At the end of this 2-3 minute wait the computer will boot into the OS. To show the problem more clearly:1.  From shut down power on the computer2.  The computer will appear to boot into Windows, but instead will go to a black screen with a mouser cursor.  You can move the mouse cursor so the computer is not completely locked, but it will not go any further.3.  Completely shut down, then turn on again.  After doing this the computer will boot into a blue screen with a Please Wait message on it for at least 2-3 minutes.  When this step is completed you will be taken to the login screen. I am running Windows 10, and am fully up to date with all updates, and the system drivers have been updated to their most recent versions.  Any idea about what I should do from here? Thank you, Brad Ricketts

Yet another thing seems to be wrong with my Yoga. Every so often, the cursor will jump to the upper right corner of the screen and minimize my maximized window, or to the lower right corner and open up the action center. It does this several times in a row, almost like someone else is controlling the touchpad/mouse. Then it'll suddenly go away, only to come back minutes or hours later. I also noticed that when watching fullscreen videos, the video controls will come up randomly, as if I moved the mouse or touched the touchpad. I tried to uninstall all input devices, rebooting twice and letting Windows reinstall them. I thought it helped, but it didn't. I just updated the Synaptics driver to the latest May 2018 one, but that didn't fix the problem either. Any idea what's going on? Is it the touchpad? The trackpad? The pen? The touchscreen? I read all kinds of crazy ideas on another thread, from putting tin foil under the keyboard, to disabling the wacom digitizer. I haven't tried those yet. I swear, this is the worst purchase I have made in a long time. Lenovo is about to lose a customer for life.

Does anyone have the same problem as I have? The Ultranav middle button requires a LOT of force to keep the button pressed as I scroll. It fatigues my wrist in the area I think might be the carpal tunnel. Scrolling requires holding the button for long periods sometimes and it is unpleasant. This is perhaps my 5th or 6th (and best) Thinkpad since they were first offered--the old black & white ones.

Fired up the laptop this morning and I'm seeing my Touchpad & mouse cursor periodically jumping to the top left of my screen.  Double checked BIOS and all updates.  Clean report on diagnostics.Swapped out HD for a fresh W-10 software load and same behavior is observed.  It's gotta be hardware. Which board controls the pointing device cursor location ?  BTW, screen was replaced on this unit >2yrs ago.   Unit was 100% until this....!
