ThinkCentre M91p CPU Upgrade

Q: ThinkCentre M91p CPU Upgrade

Hiya, In my current PC I have an i5 3470, and In the Thinkcentre M91p i have recently purchased, it has an i7 2600, which is a little overkill for what ive purhcased it for, so I was thinking of swapping the cpu's so I have the 2600 in my gaming PC and the Thinkcentre gets the 3470.However I'm not sure if this would work as I have no idea whether the motherboard of the ThinkCentre would accept the new Ivy Bridge chip, and I don't even know if my Asus P8H77-V would accept the 2600?So would this work? and how would I go about doing it? Im a noob at all this im sorry ;(All answers are much appreciated, Ajsski99

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:ThinkCentre M91p motherboard and ECC RAM??

My question goes like this : On a out-of-warranty ThinkCentre M91p, if we replace the standard CPU (i5) with a socket compatible Xeon CPU, will the motherboard support ECC RAM?

No.  It's the Intel Chipset that interfaces to memory, and only workstation and server Chipsets support ECC.  Check the specs for your desktop Chipset if you like.

Also, just because a processor will fit into the socket, does not mean it will be supported by the BIOS.   Sometimes there is overlap between ThinkCentres and ThinkStations which do use Xeons.   If so, that Thinkstation model will be listed on your BIOS download page, but for unknown reasons that upgrade does not always work.

Hello, I recently bought a Thinkcentre m91p desktop. It comes with an Intel Core i5-2400 and a motherboard Lenovo 7052A9G (BIOS 9HKT47AUS - 01/10/2012). What is strange is that the CPU fan runs almost all the time at full speed. I installed HWMonitor and the CPU temperature is normal, but I noticed that one value, the VR temp, is changing all the time and is very high (around 100°C and sometimes more than 200°C, even at startup). I'm thinking about buying a Zalman Fanmate in order to control manually the CPU fan, but I would like to know if this is a known problem and if there's a solution to fix this. Thanks !

I have a ThinkCentre (SFF) M series, M91P, type 4518ESU, running Windows 10. Can I add internal Bluetooth?

A:ThinkCentre M series M91P Bluetooth

A better way to add Bluetooth to a desktop is with a USB dongle.

Bluetooth is a quickly evolving technology, and to support later devices, you'll need an adapter that supports the latest versions of Bluetooth.    'Newegg' is a good place to look for anything computer related.

Hello, I cannot find the way to install an AMD FirePro v3900 on a ThinkCentre M91p.I need such board for sharing the desktop between two monitors having a DisplayPort and a DVI and don't have enough time to purchase another board. On the M92p, I can use it by going in the BIOS, set the video settings to "PEG" (PCI-e Graphics Device), enable Multi-Monitor support. The cards works and I can later install the driver (coming with AMD Catalyst) to obtain the possibility extending the desktop to two screens. But on the M91p, it does not work : the screen connected to the PCI Express graphic card reports "no signal" no matter if I connect the display with the DVI or the DisplayPort. I also tried setting the video to "IGD" (Internal Graphics Device) or to "Auto" with the graphic card plugged, but connecting the cable to the M91p's native VGA or DisplayPort, with the hope that I could see something and install the driver for the graphic card. But there is no signal to the native ports when the video card is plugged. I also trid using AMD Radeon cards which were working with ThinkCenter M91p or M92p.One with HDMI+DVI works. One with DisplayPort+DVI doesn't.I need a board with DisplayPort (DP) as most of my screens have DP and no HDMI. The drivers are up to date (including the chipset). Only the BIOS was not updated.Should I update it ? Or does the problem have other origin (e.g. power) ? Thank you very much for your help.

I just got a recent AMD Polaris card (RX 550) for Lenovo ThinkCentre M91p, and it simply doesn't boot with it. It doesn't even get to the starting splash screen with Lenovo logo. The monitor remains blank. I updated the BIOS to the last release I could find but it still didn't help. Can anything be done with it? It works with Nvidia cards, but I'm running Linux and want to use open drivers, so AMD is a much better option. I replaced the power supply by the way with better one.

I'd recommend going into the UEFI, which replaces the old BIOS standard, and resetting to optimal defaults, which will likely fix the issue. You also should update it, if you have access to a Windows system use rufus to format a bootable dos usb stick and copy the contents of the USB Drive UEFI BIOS Flash Package so you won't need Windows (or a CD) on the actual system to do updates. The current version is 58 vs the 43 you have on there now. By the way you can also use rufus to install Windows to a usb drive for 'Windows To Go' mode which is quite useful at times, especially if you don't want Windows on the system itself. You can download a Windows 10 iso directly from Microsoft's website and via rufus  'Windows To Go' mode isn't limited to just the Enterprise version. CHANGES for 9HKT58A/9HJT58A

Hi everyone, I recently acquired a M91p SFF with:i5-24008gb RamAsus eah5450 low profile passOptical drive500gb hdd @7200rpmand 240w PSU So I have been researching a lot about what GPUs will work in my systemI decided to buy the GT730 (to upgrade my old gpu).It has a power consumption of 25w (TDP of 38w) according to the geforce website.I just want to make sure that it will work.Although I am confident it will work because the asus eah5450 has a power consumption of up to 75 watts.I MAY have to update my bios but my concern is that there's no bios update for Windows 10.I am also planning to transfer it to another case and buy a new psu but I am not sure what size the motherboard is (most likely micro-atx) and also the connectors to a new psu would be similar to the stock psu that I currently have The GT730 is on it's way and i'm planning to install it and removing the power to the optical drive (dvd) since I don't use it that often. This is just to make sure that my psu would hold the entire setup. Any suggestions guys? Thanks!

I recently bought a Thinkcentre SFF M91p and tried to install an AMD Radeon HD7570 with NO success.  The machine will not boot.  The CPU and GPU fans spin, but it never boots.  I thought first it might be a power issue, and tried unplugging the CD-ROM drive, which didn't work either.  I then moved to upgrading the BIOS and that also had no effect.  I did find this morning the PCI-e slot in this machine is listed as a 2.0 slot and the HD7570 is spec'd at PCI-e 2.1, so is this card completely incompatible with the M91p I have? What GPU should I be using that will work straight away, and give me the max performance in this system without having to upgrade the PSU?   The system specs are as follows System type:   M91p, SFFSystem model number: 4518Y4DOperating system installed: Win10 Home 64-BitBIOS version: LENOVO 9HKT58AUS, 6/10/2014Thank you for your help!

But I want to be sure, will this work in the case? Also, I think I read somewhere that Lenovo does not a use standard ATX connection, but from what I can see, this system uses a standard 24 pin ATX connection to the motherboard. I might be wrong though. I am no expert on computers and I have never upgraded or built a system before so I ask here to be 100% before I buy anything.  I hope someone where can shed some light on my situation. Thanks

Hi. I just purchased a Lenovo Thinkcentre M91p (machine type 0266) which has an external 150w power supply. I purchased it to be used as a HTPC and i want to put a gpu and more ram in it. The problem is the power supply, all the ones i see people talk about have an internal 240w power supply. On the back of the pc is a DC in jack thats directly into the motherboard itself. I ran some calculations on power usage and the site i used said the recommended power supply size for the standard unit is 150w with a peak load of 123w. Adding the gpu alone pushes the peak load to 140w (nvidia gt730) with a recommended supply of 180w. My question basically is how can i upgrade an external power supply when all i can find is standard 150w external replacements or internal ones that wont be of any use

Hi, It appears we are many here to encounter problems with the restrictive white list of graphic cards for the ThinkCentre M91p (as well as M91 and M81) Small Form Factors. I have several AMD graphic cars which work straightforward with the M92p but emit no signal with the M91p. Some will argue that ThinkCenter are business machines and hence the restrictive list of graphic cards. But AMD also produces cards for the business segment, which are assumed being reliable. The white list keeps the M91p away from new cards. I upgraded the BIOS to its latest version, but this did not change anything. Is there a way to stop the filtering done by the BIOS or to upgrade the M91p's BIOS to accept new graphic cards ?What about flashing the BIOS for the M92p on a M91p ?I assume it wouldn't work as the marchines are different, but has anyone tried this ?

I am not sure which exact model it is.  Used to use it in my home office, but moved it out to the entertainment center ages ago and basically use it as a "jukebox" that I have stored all my music into and feed my audio system.  I run nothing else, and it worked fine doing this for years.  Anyway, with a recent update in iTunes, I now am experiencing issues playing back music, as I never have before.   I populated the main board with 4GB of RAM, but when I check in system information...... although it states 4GB installed, it only chows 2.25GB in "total physical memory". I have tried everything I could to increase performance of the resources I have..... disabled what was unnecessary and turned off everything that does not absolutely need to run in the background, but have only improved things a bit.  In doing some research, it was suggested that a  BIOS update "may" allow me to go beyond the RAM limitations of my system.  I figured I would try this out before bagging it and just investing in a new computer. Anyway, I have attached a snapshot of my system configuration.  Can anyone help me find a later version of BIOS?  I have tried searching for it myself, but everything points me back to the Lenovo site, were I cannot find anything.  When I plug in my serial number, it does not find a... My Lenovo ThinkCentre runs just fine on Vista Business and I received Win 7 Ultimate NFR for both 32 and 64 bit versions. I have no real need to upgrade the OS, but I'm a tech junky and having the latest is one of my passions. Seriously, if I go more than a week without wiping and reloading some version of an OS on my BlackBerry, I start going into withdrawal. Anyhow, I'd like to put Win7 on my system, but just not sure if it's worth any potential headaches. I could upgrade to the 32 bit relatively easily I assume, but I'm thinking of doing a clean install of the 64bit. I would probably leave the recovery partition intact and install Win7 over the running Vista OS partition.

Is there any great advantage to loading 64bit from scratch? I have 4GB installed, and of course can only see 3GB currently. All programs and hardware are compatible per Windows Upgrade Advisor. I haven't done a clean install on my pc in a few years, and I remember it being a huge pain to re-install all programs and settings. Should I just go with the 32bit version?

Thanks!

I went for it on my dell..worked like a breeze...i did go to 32 later though due to a network all in 1 that wasnt happy with 64

Hello ! A friend of mine brought me his computer to make a fresh format/reinstall and possibly upgrade it. I cleaned the computer, changed thermal pasta with arctic silver mx5 etc. Activated windows 7 premium family with the key on the side of the computer, so far so good. But the computer could really use an upgrade. So I checked on the internet and found this :  Socket is AM2, and Phenom ready (page4). Possible CPU upgrades are Athlon 2 6400+ (dual core 3.2 ghz) and Phenom x4 9550 (quad core 2.6 ghz). Also, there are 4 memory slots, DDR2 PC 6400 (800 mhz). Max memory supported is 8 gb theorically. My questions are :  - Which compatible CPU is the best ? Is Phenom x4 9550 really compatible ? - 4x 2gb ram is the best configuration ?  Thanks in advance for your help. Fabri8686

What is the cheapest 300W+ PSU that will fit in this machine? I want a gpu but that 240W PSU won't cut it. EDIT: Here is the gpu i am planning on buying. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814932005&ignorebbr=1

A:Lenovo ThinkCentre M81 PSU Upgrade?

Tower or Small form factor... actually posting your Machine Type Model (MTM) would help. If you have the tower, just about any ATX PSU like this one would work since I believe your motherboard as the standard 24 pin connector, but with that card you might want to wait to see if it even needs a 300w PSU, because it may work just fine with you current PSU unless you have a bunch of HDDs installed etc.. If you want a Lenovo PSU that shipped with the M81, you can get a 280 watt like this one  https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Lenovo-41A9684-Desktop-PS-5281-7VR/dp/B00R3NPNN6, which should be more than capable of powering your GPU. Best of luck,

The m700 SFF (I7 and 16gb of ram) comes with 80 PLUS 85% 210 W PSU power supply.  I currently need a graphics card that can support 4 monitors preferably via VGA.  I found a few graphics cards and even installed one (Radeon 5570 SFF) already and it didn't work.  The minimum was 250w so that should be the problem.   In any case, if I need to upgrade my PSU, how do I find one?   Also, are there any GPUs that will fufill my needs without needing to upgrade the PSU?   In other words, what are the compatible GPUs for my computer that can work with the current PSU or an upgraded PSU that can support 4 monitors?   For example, if I wanted the nvidia Quadro NVS 420, would that be compatible with the my computer and its current PSU?

Hello i have Lenovo Thinkcentre M90P whith Intel Pentium G6950 250GB HD  and 2GB of 1066mhz DDR3 RAM i think its Hynix? Recently i bought a 4GB Crucial DDR3 stick 1600mhz  . http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct51264ba160b  I took out the old RAM and put in this new one but the PC doesnt get into windows anymore and just keep rebooting if I install the old RAM back everything works perfect. I tought that MHZ shouldnt be a problem and that the new ram will be downgraded to 1333mhz (max supported i think). Maybe any BIOS update would work or what should i do?  Thanks for help!

Hello, is it possible to install DD3 PC3-12800 into Thinkcentre Edge71 that usually accepts PC3-10600. Is there a way to check this somewhere in the system or BIOS. At the moment PC3-12800 is cheaper then PC3-10600 and I would like increase RAM from 8GB to 16GB. Thank you very much.

I have seen Crucial Memory use higher speed chips for their Lenovo 'System Specific' memory (the speed will drop to the lowest common denominator), but I believe the timings must be identical to the factory memory to work.
