Hidden tray Icons turning into white boxes over time.

Q: Hidden tray Icons turning into white boxes over time.

Quite happy with Win 8 Pro but just one little niggle has reared its head. After a couple of days uptime my tray icons in the hidden pop up are turning into white squares, which makes them hard to identify. I tried rebuilding the icon cache as found here, Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Help Forums which seemed to solve the problem. But a few days later an icon has turned back into a white box, a bandwidth meter. Any solutions?

Preferred Solution: Hidden tray Icons turning into white boxes over time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Tim, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Resetting the notification area icons may help with this instead.

Hope this helps,

I've searched and I havent found any fixes (or similar problems) Any and all help would be really appreciated. The first pic is normal size, the second is with larger icons, so you can tell the Normal Icon is behind the white box.

Hi all,

I made the unfortunate mistake of downloading a ZIP file from Limewire and when I opened it up, I must have released the evil virus that was living inside. Since then, it's been nothing but chaos on my laptop. I'm posting this from a second laptop, which I'm fortunate to have.

Form the start, I was no longer able to access my Task Manager by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL. I am able to get to it through the ServicePack folder and created a shortcut on my desktop. But I know it's not right that I can't access it through those 3 keys. As well, my System Icon trays don't display properly and are nothing more than blue boxes. A few times, some have displayed properly but NONE work. No alt text appears either, if I hover over them. Even the icons that display properly don't work if I click them or double-click them. However, my taskbar is fine and my Start menu is fine.

I managed to uninstall Limewire after repeated "Limewire launch error" pop-ups and also got rid of Java because the pop-ups switched to ones about LW and Java. During this time, my browser (Mozilla Firefox) was working fine. I downloaded AdAware, ran a deep scan, and deleted every critical object and privacy threat. Then, did it again.

At some point in the deletion, I must have caused the virus (which wasn't destroyed) to morph into something new because I couldn't use my browser anymore. When I tried to open a Mozilla browser window, it would think for a long time and then I'd get pop-ups abou... Read more

Every morning (This is not exaggeration) I do mean EVERY MORNING, I get Event ID 1002 DHCP-Client that says:

"The IP address lease 192.168.x.x for the Network Card with network address 0xE0CB4E2F7281 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.x.x (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message")

When this happens all my icons on the desktop turn to blank white boxes and then 1 by 1 change back to their correct icon picture.

How can I stop the desktop icons from change to white then back to normal? I have already tried renaming the icon cache to OLD and restarting. Didn't work/Problem still happens. Half my desktop is filled with shortcuts and icons and it really distracting/annoying when they all go white and back to normal.

Is there any way to remove it(without the hidden programs inside it appearing on the system tray)? Thank you in advnace!

A:Hide the hidden icons from the system tray

If you right click on the triangle and select properties, you can turn off icon notifications - does that help?

Hi everyone,

I've had this problem a few times in the past but lately it's been happening so often that I decided to give it some time to try and solve it.

The problem is that after restarting my computer (running Win XP SP3), all icons in the system tray (next to the clock) lose all settings that I've made regarding their visibility - while I had left some of them to be "Always show", most were on "Always hide", such that there weren't too many icons taking up taskbar space.

I noticed this problem happens right after restarting the computer - not after *every* restart though, I have a suspicion that it might only happen after restarts prompted by Windows Updates.

I did some searching but could not find anyone who had a similar problem (and solved it!). Can anyone help? Many thanks in advance!

PS: apologies for also cross-posting this on ComputerForum and HardwareForums

The little popup box in the tray that comes up when you hit the up arrow (to "Show hidden icons") is bugging me. It seems to have a timer built in that hides it a couple seconds after you click on one of the icons inside. This really bugs me. I would prefer that it either hide itself immediately after I click on one of the icons (but not if I right click one, obviously) or else lets me hide it by clicking directly on it somewhere. I know I can hide it by clicking on the arrow again, but some of my tray applications (namely my Portable Apps Launcher) minimize again if I click that arrow, leaving me with no other option than to wait for that annoying box to hide itself and get out of the way.

So is there any way I can either set it to hide immediately after clicking on an icon, or to close when I click on the box itself? I'm sure there must be some registry value i can change or something to do that. Thanks!

You can try this:
Go to Start and type CMD and enter

type "taskkill /im explorer.exe /f" without quotes

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

attrib -h IconCache.db

I have set the Notification area icons to "always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar"

No mater what settings I do in the "Notification area Icons" control panel, nothing makes them show!

The only way I can really get to them is by going into task manager, closing the program, and re open it, and hope it doesn't go back to system tray by default..

A:How to restore missing tray icon? Windows 7 Tray Icons Changer

Hello bageraz and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'd uninstall the Tray Icon Changer using the forced uninstall option from Revo Uninstaller (they have a 30 day free trial.) Hopefully this will also remove unwanted bits and pieces from the registry.

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall

Then I'd try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to see if any system files were damaged or corrupted by the TIC. If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

can somebody please tell me why sometimes when i go to a web site i get little white boxes with red X in them? sometimes i don't get them but sometimes i do. is there a solution? soembody please explain. thank you!!!

A:little white boxes with red X

The white box with a red X means that there is an image supposed to be there, but it is not diplaying.

The reason can vary widely, from incorrectly written webpages, Internet servers that hold the image being off-line or down for maintenance or ad-blocking software on your own PC, or seetings on your own PC to prevent image disply, or ....

Perhaps if you post a link to one such site we could comment further.

There are three things you should check:

1) On the View menu in IE, point to Encoding , and then click Western European (Windows).

2) Verify that Show Pictures has not been disabled:

- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .
- Click the Advanced tab, and then verify that the Show Pictures check box is selected under Multimedia .
- Click OK .

3) Restore Default Associations for Graphics File Types :

Go to Folder Options/File Types, and make sure that the following file types are associated by default with Microsoft Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe):
ART image (.art)
GIF image (.gfa, .gif)
JPEG image (.jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg)

It might also be a good idea to install the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine
And here are two MS articles:

Hi, newby here. I have Windows Vista home premium. When online, I'm getting the red x's in white boxes where little icons should be, under my user profile only.

Under my wife's profile (administrator), all the sites work fine.

Like on ebay or paypal, some buttons I can't even see to click, until I run the mouse cursor over the spot.

I'm a member on other forums. Some of the forums are worse than others when it comes to the # of icons screwed up. Like the "add image" and "wrap quotes", all of those options are red x's in white boxes.

I've tried googling this many times and tried to fix it myself, but I need specific help to narrow down the problem. Please help! I payed for Norton and some kind of PC boost from them(live guy takes over your computer and "cleans it up), hoping that would help, but no.

They did help me narrow it down to a problem with Internet explorer, maybe. They downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and when I get online with that everything works fine!?

I'm not the most computer literate person. I'm comfortable with Internet explorer (all my favorites and what-not) and don't want to lose that or swith to something else.

I did do a system restore to a point months before. It worked for a day or two, but that was it.

Thanks in advance for any help, Mike

Hi all,

Can anybody please help me with this one. I see a lot of computers lately with the same type of malware infection. I am able to remove the infection with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Hitman Pro and MBAM; however, the changes do not revert back. All computers are either Windows Vista or Windows 7. All of the computers have the following symptoms before and after the clean-up: Black background screen which cannot be changed via Personalize option, hidden desktop and user files, hidden or white quick launch icons, disabled system restore.

Is this a new type of infection? I haven't seen this type of infection before. Is there a good solution guide for removing this malware and reverting back the changes?

A:Malware Signs: Black Background - Hidden Desktop Icons - Hidden User Files

I had this infection yesterday. I used the procedure for "Windows XP Recovery" removal, which first requires the use of a program called rkill, before using Malwarer Bytes. This sounds exactly like what happened to me. Look on this site for Windows XP Recovery removal for the link to rkill and this will probably work for you.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit, Select All" then click on "Edit, Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

They're called "Crop Marks."

To remove, open the Word page with the problem, click on the Word orb, scroll down to Word Options, and select Advanced.
Scroll down to Show document content, and UNcheck “Show Crop Marks”
When you're done, be sure to specify Compatibility Options (at the bottom of the screen) to select this option for this document only, or other choices.

Im a first time poster and I hope I have selected the correct category in this forum.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, pre-installed on a new laptop ive purchased in the last month. I had it set to automatically download and apply all updates.

Within the last couple of weeks, at some point suddenly my desktop icons stopped appearing and I noticed there are no system tray icons, ie volume, network, Power.

Ive searched these forums and found instructions on how to access the "Turn System Icons On Or Off" and the only option I can change is for 'Clock'. The remaining options Volume, Network, Power, Action Center are all greyed out.

I cant understand why I dont have 'permission' to do this and I wonder if it is connected to me not seeing anything on my desktop in so far as icons.

Also, I noticed I cannot 'right-click' my desktop space, which normally would have allowed me to access display options.

In searching these forums I found some references to Administrator permissions, but my User management area says I am an administrator.

Does anyone have any feedback for something I can check/fix?

Steve

A:Permissions issue? No desktop icons or system tray icons.

Have you scanned for viruses and/or malware? What Anti-virus program are you running?

Hello Delkoo and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might try rebuilding your icon cache.

Icon Cache - Rebuild

Then take a look at customizing the notification area (old system tray.)

I have an HP computer, Windows 7
Message read: Adobe Flash Player Settings / Local Storage / TheJigsawPuzzles.com is requesting permission to store information on your computer. / Requested: up to 10 Kb / Currently used: 0 Kb (was 2 Kb. before I deleted all my "cookies") Allow Deny

About a month and a half ago, I was on TheJigsawPuzzle Site and this little white box with "Adobe Flash Player Settings" on it popped up with "TheJigsawPuzzles" asking to occupy 10 Kb of space on my computer. At that time they told me they already had 2 Kb (which I figured was a cookie.) I denied them that permission about 20 times and it started to block the jigsaw I was doing. I figured "what the heck, it`s only another 8 Kb!" and allowed them to do that. Other comanies asked the same thing but I ignored them. I gathered that who-ever was operating that white box put a "dead" homepage of TheJigsawPuzzles on my screen (none of the links worked.) I wrote to TheJigsaw Puzzles several times, but they claimed to know nothing about these white boxes, even though their name was on one. Then these "dead" homepages from TheJigsawPuzzles started to occupy space everywhere on my computer, and finally the computer was completely blocked. I had to pay quite a lot of money to have it completely cleaned out. I was almost back to normal when these damned boxes started appearing again, smack in the middle of any site that was in the habit of showing sma... Read more

Any chance we could get your system specs, my crystal ball is in being repaired.

Does it do the same when you boot into safe mode (F8)?

Hello,

I just upgraded Win 8 on my Acer Iconia W3 Tablet (x86) to Windows 8.1.
But now I have the problem that in the settings-app and in the righten menu (e.g. the search-function) every text is just a white (or sometimes black) box.
In other Apps and on the desktop-applications the text is displayed correctly; and before I have installed Windows 8.1 everything was fine too. Below are two screenshots which should describe the problem.
How can I fix this issue?

Thanks in advance
LEERZEICHEN

A:Letters are not shown in particular apps -> white boxes

Hi Leerzeichen and welcome! You may have to backup and clean install from beginning. Install 8 again then upgrade. Does that tablet come with recovery partition? Does it have utility to create usb flash recovery?

Do you have latest firmware?

Edit: This may be of help: Updating to Windows 8.1 on Acer Iconia W3 tablet - Acer Community the last post links to video drivers.

There are 4 white boxes on the left side from CPU labeled 1,2,3,4 on the Lenovo Y50 motherboard (please attached photo). My replacement motherboard has box 4 marked with a marker. I am wondering what those number mean. Is it some kind of indication of the motherboard grade and if so, is lower number higher grade or opposite?

hey, didn't know whether to put this in utilities or games. it's all game-related so i figured here would be best.

ok. *deep breath* lately i reinstalled windows XP Pro SP2, and i believe my CPU is slightly unstable, either that or my memory. either way my computer needs some new parts. but it runs fairly well. but when i reinstalled it, i gained an unsightly problem.

Upon installing xfire, i discovered that at least 3 parts of it were malfunctional. the ad bar at the top, the info sidebars of the chat windows with avatars, profile links, etc, and the screenshot window you get when you exit a game are ALL white. i can't even click them. and i soon discovered that my problems were not limited to xfire, and this confused me even further.

Steam suffers as well. I installed Steam today and everything works fine. i can see the buttons, tabs, and toolbars at the top, but the actual content in the window is white. nothing. it gets even better....

I own the game pack Star Wars: Best of PC (amazing game pack btw), and when i run the autorun, GUESS WHAT? IT'S BLANK!

this is bugging the crap out of me, because i don't know what's causing it. my main thoughts were Flash Player, Shockwave, or Javascript. nope. i installed them all(correctly as far as i'm aware) and it didn't help a wee bit. my antivirus is Avast! Antivirus, and i've reinstalled xfire 3 times with no luck.

A:Solved: white boxes in Xfire, Steam, and game autoruns.

nevermind. it turned out to be that my ATI Radeon 9550 video card's drivers were corrupted. i uninstalled them, ATI Catalyst, redownloaded the drivers without getting catalyst, and got ATI Tray Tools.

Hello,
I continued to have loading problems with Half Life 2 using my WinXP OS but since I have a dual booting PC with 2 operating systems I switched to my WIN98 OS and succeeded in loading Half Life 2 as a single player game in off-line mode. So, I now have Half Life 2 running on my PC with WIN98 OS but I contantly see small white flashing boxes appearing during game play of Half Life 2. Any ideas what the problem is?

PC system specs: dual booting PC, Pentium 4 (2.0 GHz), MSI 845 Ultra-AR motherboard, 512 MB of RAM (pc2100), ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128 MB video card, Win98 on the 10 GB hard drive, and WinXP pro on the 120 GB hard drive.

As a guess i would say your gfx card doesn't support the game very well. does that card support DX9?, my son can run the demo with an FX5200 just fine on medium settings.

A:System Tray Icons - Blank Icons

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if restarting the computer may be able to clear this up. If not, then you might see if resetting the notification area icons may help.

Hope this helps,

If I am in the wrong forum, please let me know.

About a month after I started using it, the Say the Time clock program I bought stopped launching the management menu when I right click the date/time field in the task tray (notification area).

Therefore, I can't use or edit the program.

Neither the touchpad nor the cordless mouse works.

Other than this problem, my computer works great. Every single item that's meant to be right clicked works for me.

Is there a way I can generate a log to show the software manufacturer (Provenio) that it's their problem and not mine?

I am a novice user but I can follow instructions.

However, I don't want to put my computer at risk if I make an entry error.

Or is it obvious that it's a software problem?

I've been using computers for 18 years and I've never had this problem until I bought this software and used it for about a month.

I just wanted a conclusive way of putting the ball back in the manufacturer's court.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Regards.

You can use VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop

Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad

Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply
