Window 7 will not open to new window when double click mouse

Q: Window 7 will not open to new window when double click mouse

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit system.
When I open an email...it opens correctly, but when I want to double click for the next window to open, I have to have toRIGHT click that window and instruct Windows to "Open to new Window".

Is there any global command that can activate this procedure automatically.
Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows XP service pack 3 .

When i double click any drive , lets say D Drive.
It opens in to new separate window.
Surely options are set to "open in to same window".

The problem only with the clicking on main drives.

And problem do not occur when i click on the folders. They
do open into same windows.

I'm having a little difficulty here. In succinct terms, whenever I double left click on a folder, it opens up a search window and not the actual window. Opening up "My Computer" and "Hard Drive" is not a problem. If I right click and choose explore or open, the file opens normally but at the moment, this is my only method of navigating my computer.

The problem seems to have occurred after I did some experimenting with Windowsblinds and Avedesk. Since then, I have been trying to sort it out but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.

I have a feeling I may have done this to myself when I was trying to get rid of the spyware (or whatever it was) before I sucked it up and spent half my rent money on a new subscription to Norton...

When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.

I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions &... Read more

I am running into an issue where I can open a window/program with my mouse however once the window is open I cannot click inside of it. The window becomes inactive. I also have noticed I cannot right click on my desktop to bring up the properties. I can right click on the window in the task bar to close it but not in the window.

Since this is happening I am limited to command prompt. I ran sfc /scannow with no errors. I tried with 3 different mice. I booted the computer into safe mode with command prompt and brought up the device manager to show devices not in use, and when the device manager window opened I could click inside it! since I could use the window I uninstalled all mouse drivers, and reinstalled my microsoft wireless usb mouse driver.. while in this safe mode I changed my mouse properties to system default as I read somewhere that can reset things.

Next I booted the computer in safe mode (without command prompt) and still the same thing. I was trying to do a restore point as well however my Kaspersky antivirus 2012 is preventing that as i cannot find a way to kill the program through command prompt.

Now I have no clue what to do! If anyone can help I would appreciate it! either a way to disable kaspersky so i can try a restore or another idea for getting my mouse to work as i really do not want to reformat..

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Seven Forums! inlalaland

First when not able to run the System Restore feature while in Windows the fast alternative is simply booting up from the 7 dvd if you have one and going into the repair tools where the options for using the feature is there along with restoring a full system image backup. You simply use a restore point while booted live from disk.

If you don't have a 7 dvd to boot from the option to burn a repair cd is found in the Control Panel>Backup & Restore section or available at Neosmart Technologies. Windows 7 Repair and Recovery CD Download | The NeoSmart Files

There you would still need to see the disk image burned to a blank cd-r first in order to boot from the new cd. The other tool besides the System File Checker you can try would be the Disk Check tool you can schedule to run from a command prompt since you likely wouldn't be able to right click on the C drive icon to bring up properties>Tools and click on the Check now button under Error checking.

Typing "chkdsk /r" and pressing enter should see a message asking to schedule it for the next startup you answer with a Y for yes or N for no. This can help with any errors on the drive to help to some extent getting Windows to run normally. If the problems however are too severe the option to see a Repair Install or performing a full Clean Install (last resort) would have to be considered.

Problem: A double-click on a folder in Windows Explorer FOLDER VIEW opens a new window.

I have scoured hundreds of forum postings on this very problem with 99% of proposed solutions not working for the poster. My sense of this is that the solutions offered focus on SHELL registry keys which deal with right click, not double click.

I think there is a vital registry key that handles double clicks in the folder view or folder pane that OVERRIDES the "folder options" setting "Open each folder in the same window".

Among many, I've tried the following, they change nothing (these are just a few examples):
I am LONG AFTER the point where system restore would have helped
It's not a virus
No changes work in the following because this is not a shell problemHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell default value set to "explore"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell default value set to "explore"
sfc /scannow - It is not a problem with system files
regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll"
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"
-(This worked for a couple of people)
-Using your right arrow key, move the cursor over to the right of the 5th "Value data" (2A), press the Backspace key, type in 0A (number 0), and click on OK.

I've got a slight problem. When I double click on a folder or icon on the desktop, it doesn't open up the desired location/destination. It opens up the search dialog box. I'm running windows xp home edition and I have the new service pack. It was working fine and then all of a sudden it started doing it. I didn't change anything nor did I download anything that could contain a virus.

If you have any ideas as to why this is happening or how I can solve it, please let me know. Also if you need anymore info, don't hesitate to ask.

Standard users can't change the time, only Administrators can (on XP Power Users can as well).

You can revoke the right to change the system time, but members of the Administrators group will be able to remove any restriction you put on them.

Here is my problem, for around 2 weeks :
When I double-click on a drive or folder, it opens it in another window, but explore in the same window if I right click then Explore.
Around the same time I noticed other problems, may be linked :
- I can't do anything in the account manager (there is the shield in front of the links like 'change my password and I can't use it and I can't open the parents contol in Configuration tools)
- In pictures directory, thumbnails appear then diseappear (to the default image icon)
- I experienced some problems copying folders.

My actions until now (some found in forums):
- Of course the option 'open in a single window' is selected (i deselected, applyed, reselected, rebooted ....)
- I tried to restore but it didn't work, may be the restoration point wasn't old enough, even i choosed the oldest one.
- I could create a new account on dos, to check if the problem would occure : it did :(
- I changed in regedit values HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Directory/Shell default to none (idem for Folder and drive), It didn't work, I also tried 'open' or 'explore' but no change, I checked the explore/command but it looks ok, and I guess it is since the right click/Explore is working fine.
- I ran the command : regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, it din't change anything either.
- I checked my drives with updated anti-virus and anti-malware (Avira + spybot + malwarebyte) and also ran Ccleaner and others ...

Forgive me if my searches weren't up to speed to find the answer to this... I tried, I really did.

I just had to get a new system and it has Windows 7 Pro - X64. Now it seems like a double click in a window header bar, all windows, end up with a full screen window. Driving me nuts! (short trip )

I've searched all over and can only find the doc. on disabling the full screen snap when moving a window off screen or to the top.

Any idea how to disable the bar-double click behavior?

Thanks, and again I apologize if my search was crud.

Double-clicking the title bar to maximize a window has been a behavior since at least Windows 95. I think it cannot be disabled. You may need to change your approach.

XP Pro

Basically I was messing around in file types because my folder icons were botched. Ran TweakUI to fix folder icons, but here is what happened.

After I was poking around in there, double clicking a folder opened the search window. So i went into file types and created a new action, and pointed it at explorer.exe from my windows directory.

Now, the problem is, when i double click it opens the folder in a new window, instead of the same.

I when I am in the advanced settings of file types (tools-folder options-file types) the Edit and Remove buttons will not light up, but i am the administrator.

Restore defaults doesn't work.

Is there a backend way to fix this anyone knows of, short of reformatting ??

p.s. a system restore to a previous date did nothing.

Thanks in advance !!!

I've got a problem and most likely it's most trivial to solve, but I don't know how to.

My old offline-laptop has strange fits lately - most likely because it's filled up to the brim with the music and pictures of the last decade - and that's why there wasn't enough storage space to do system monitoring and there are no old saves for doing an automatic recovery of old settings, as I already tried to do.

This morning I tried to compare and actualize some word-documents from an USB-stick and I needed to check for the date of their writing, and for any reasons the folders on the USB-stick suggested that the files in the folder were music, and not the word-documents they were, so I changed the folder-settings of the USB-stick... to be able to see the type of programm and the date of the last change.

For any reasons, I changed the settings of the folder options (I intended to change the settings for the USB-stick only) clicked to adopt the changes for all... then removed the USB-stick...

and since then, whenever I doubleclick on any folder of my XP laptop, automatically pops up the window-search
I don't want the window-search, I want the folder to open and show me what's in there without right clicking on the folder and selecting 'open' first. Its really getting annoying, if you have up to 20 sub-folders in a chain...

If you right-click on a folder for any reason now 'suchen' (that's 'search') - is w... Read more

When I go to a webpage and use "ctrl" + "right mouse click", a new blank window opens. This is probably an okay feature but when I go to a webpage with a selection window with many items in a list and try to select more than one using the "ctrl" + "right mouse click", a new window opens when I click on the second item in the list. So, a basic keyboard feature of windows doesn't work when I am in the browser only.

So, I need to disable this.

I have tried this on many other PCs and they do not have the problem.

Is there a mapping keyboard issue? (I have replaced the keyboard from a PC where it work fine and it still does not work.)

Is there keyboard short-cuts I need to remove? If so, how?

Hello. I know this has been covered elsewhere before and before coming here to ask this question, I scoured Google and multiple forums and threads and I can't seem to get a straight answer. I have two PCs, one is running Windows 7 Professional x64 and the other one is running Windows 7 Professional 32bit. On the 64 bit machine, when I am in Windows Explorer, if I hold down the Ctrl key and click on a folder in the left navigation pane, it opens that folder in a new window. This is behaviour similar to right clicking on the folder and selecting
"Open in New Window" but I like the keyboard shortcut and that's my habit. As far as I can remember, this is the way it has always worked on this particular computer and although I do have Classic Shell installed that is only to get back the Up button that I liked from Windows XP. I don't think I modified the registry and I don't have AutoHotKey installed. My mystery is that no matter what I do (Folder Options, registry etc) I cannot seem to replicate this behaviour on the other computer which is running the same operating system in 32 bit mode. It's odd because sometimes on computers running Windows 7 at work I will try to do the same thing and it won't work and I would just think, that's odd, perhaps there is a setting somewhere. And now it doesn't work on one of my own computers and I can't see what the difference is in the settings between the two computers.

I saw that someone had asked this question in the past and the ... Read more

A:Ctrl+Click to open folder in new window in Windows Explorer

Well, I guess I had answered my own question above! Sorry for wasting anyone's time that did bother to read but apparently that Ctrl+Click is a feature of Classic Shell, just not one that is obvious among the settings. I installed Classic Shell on the other PC and bingo, it worked like I wanted. Mystery solved. I guess for others looking for the same functionality, Classic Shell is the way to go.

Many thanks to Stantly, who solved my previous problem with windows explorer (clicking folders opening in new windows despite the "open in same window" being set".

Explorer now opens folders if I click on them in the left hand "Folders" pane, but if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) in opens a new window to "my documents".

All the problems started when I added added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.

In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find

For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open

Any suggestions on how to make clicking folders in the right hand pane opwn them up propoerly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?

Hi and thanks for looking.

I rarely ever use IE, im more of a firefox and opera person.
Long story short, im looking for a way to hopefully make the middle mouse scroll wheel / button be able to open a clicked link up in a new window automatically.
Just like firefox does.

NOTE: I am reffering to IE6 and not IE7, that has tabs and what not...I never seen the need to update it to IE7 since i dont use it
I know i put the word "tab" in the title, but thats just for helping other searchers find my post if its relative.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Make IE middle click / scroll button open link in new window / tab

Hi squeezin

You will need to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 to get that option.

Check the Mouse options in the Control Panel to see if your mouse has additional options for the Wheel or middle button.

Did you install the drivers for the Targus mouse?
Try plugging a wired USB mouse into the laptop. If it works, then the issue is likely with the Targus mouse.

Whenever I search in W7, I want to have the ability to open found folders in a new window. If I r-click, that option is not there. Is there a way to add this to W7?

Also: When I go to 'open file location', the file's folder opens in the same window - highly annoying. In Vista, it opens in a new window. Anyway to change this behvior in W7 to act like Vista, so the file opens in a new window?

A:Adding 'open in new window' to search results, & opening in new window

assume this option was there on your windows 7 earlier? did you make any changes to your computer recently?

I have a Lenovo N580 laptop. Last week, I had to do a factory reset (with help from Lenovo Tech Support) because of compatibility problems with new software from my employer and windows 8.1 which is actually worse than windows 8. The compatibility problems caused my screen to go black. When booting, the Lenovo logo appeared and I had a cursor, but nothing else accept a black screen. I tried suggestions found here and the Lenovo help forum, but none worked and the factory reset was the last resort. Now I am back to using Windows 8 (this was actually the second factory reset due to other problems caused by win 8.1).

Anyway, everything is working (for now) and I also have Classic Shell installed. HOWEVER, before this second factory reset, when I had multiple windows open, aero peek worked fine. Now, it doesn't. I followed earlier suggestions of right clicking the taskbar, then clicking Properties, but the box for "Use Peek ..." is dimmed (grayed out) so I cannot check it to enable aero peek.

I got used to this feature in Win 7 and was glad to see it in Win 8, but it is the only feature about Win 8 and 8.1 that I like. Thanks for your help.

I would like to be able to open a new browser window in Firefox which would start at the identical location to the one that's open rather than opening at the home page.

In IE, File / New / Window works well for this purpose, and then if you wanted it to start at the Home Page, you could just run Explorer a second time.

It gives the flexibility of going off on other trails with the additional window, but still having the original window open. I'm not crazy about tabs which take up extra space in the browsing window. However, is there even a way to open a new tab at the same location as the current window? Maybe I'm missing the joy of tabs somehow and am stuck in my old way of thinking. Still, I would like to know if what I want is possible.

A:[SOLVED] Open new browse window at same location as current window

Hi I don't think that is an option but I understand what your after and this is the way I do it with keyboard short cuts of

Ctrl + C = copy (While holding down Ctrl tap the C key once)
Ctrl + V = paste
Ctrl + T = new tab
Ctrl + N = New page

OK starting with tabs which I think is the best thing since sliced bread. You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now to copy the URL Ctrl + C your computer will remember this link until you either copy something else or you shut down the computer.

Now we open a new tab Ctrl + T a new blank tab will open and the URL location is blank but with the cursor already in it so we paste the URL there by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and you have the duplicate page

Now working with a new page there is just a couple of small differences.

You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (once again do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now we open a new page with Ctrl + N a new page will open but the difference is it will not be blank it will be your home page so as there is already a URL that we want to get rid of. The simple way is to once again click on it only once to select it then paste the saved URL by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and ... Read more

A few weeks ago I joined facebook and thought I had everything secure. Apparently not. I think possibly what happened is I clicked on a game link that took me outside of facebook and I installed the game. Norton didn't warn me of anything wrong with the site but shortly after I started having windows pop up, a few times I was re-diverted from the page I requested, my volume icon dissappeared off the taskbar as well as my computer connection icon showing whether I was connected to the internet or not. Visa is my operating system. I had facebook installed on my blackberry which I have since removed.

I am religious about updating virus defs and usually (I thought) cautious where I travel!

The first thing that happened was someone got into my email account and sent a bunch of messages to my contacts claiming to be from me. Some got through and people were emailing me asking what was up? Most were a damien(sp) failure. Some wanted people to go to "my facebook page to see my pictures" others were messages with "re: (an unknown to me name)" and an attachment that was about viagra. My email service (Yahoo) had me change my password because it said it had been compromised. Yesterday morning as soon as I started my computer up a pop up appeared in the lower right corner that was blocked by Norton - it was a chat window with someone's name I did not recognize so I closed it. That only happened once.

My computer (a Dell inspiron 1525 laptop) is laggy. Th... Read more
