Will recognize wifi but not the internet

Q: Will recognize wifi but not the internet

Hello, my Dell inspiron 1721 running windows vista will not connect to the Internet. The problem started after I shut the lid for an hour or two. It will recognize the wifi network and other computers in the network but not the Internet. It is a home network. I've read multiple threads about this same problem and none have helped.
I'm having to type all this on my phone so please don't have me type the IPCONFIG in full if there's any way to avoid it.
Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try connecting in Safe Mode With Networking.

How to Access Safe Mode With Networking

While the computer is turning on, tap F8 once every second until a black screen with white text appears. Using your arrow keys highlight the option Safe Mode With Networking and hit Enter.

Note: If you're using Windows XP, connect to your modem or router with an Ethernet cable, then follow these directions.

I know there is a thread further down dealing with this, but it didn't make sense to me, so I'm posting my own!

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 that's less than two years old. I moved into a new apartment early this month and connected to the wireless network and all was perfectly fine. About two weeks later my computer started running slowly, not always recognizing the internet connection, freezing, and turning strange colors. I took it into a PC repair shop and the guy told me the fan just needed to be cleaned out, so he did that and it has run well wthout freezing or turning strange colors since then.

However, now it won't recognize any wireless internet connections at all. There are over 5 wifi connections in my apartment building and my computer won't recognize any of them. I went to Starbucks to see if it was a problem with my modem or router, but it did the same thing at Starbucks (didn't find any wifi). I took it back to the same PC guy, who couldn't figure out what was wrong.

The wifi WILL work when I'm sitting literally inches away from the modem and router, but even then it's EXTREMELY slow. I did a speed test and it was less than 2mbps. I took the computer to another PC repair guy, who ran a diagnosis test and said it didn't tell him what was wrong and that I should do a system recovery. I ran that last night, so my PC is currently at it's original factory settings, and it still won't find any wifi c... Read more

did this happen straight after the repair - they may have damaged occurred when they cleaned the Laptop out - they may have affected the connections of the card - depending on what they have done

I have a bit of an issue regarding my laptop's connection to wifi. Basically whenever I try connecting it to a wireless connection, nothing shows up. However, it does connect via wire with no problem whatsoever. I highly doubt the router is the issue, as my other PC connects to the wireless.

I've read a bunch of threads about said issue, of win 7 not recognizing the wifi and I've tried out most of them, from updating my router's driver to reinstalling my wireless adapter's driver and whatnot, but I'm out of options here.

Would really appreciate help, thanks in advance.

A:Won't recognize any wifi connections

my other PC connects to the wireless.

I would think that the router is working OK. I would work on the wireless adapter. I have had to clean my registry of multiple wireless entries. Every time the wireless adapter crashes and you reinstall, it adds a new installation in the registry. Google "RegSeeker", it does a very good job of finding Registry entries and makes removing them easy. It also backs up before deleting anything.

Be sure and use the latest drivers and they are OK with W7.

Hi, I have a laptop that recognizes the wifi at home and works with no problem but won't recognize the wifi at work. Even when I use the ethernet cable, the laptop recognizes the connection off and on. This laptop had no problem recognizing the office wifi before. The only change was the laptop had to be shipped back to HP to replace the fan. Prior to shipping to HP, I had backed up the whole disk and did a factory recovery. HP didn't make any software changes, only replaced the fan. When I got the laptop back, I restore the whole disk using the backup.

What could be causing the problem? One note is the wifi pw is very long but I triple checked that it is correct. I even tried changing the channel on the router and I am still experiencing the same issue. Please help! Thank you!

Hey there,

unfortunatly Windows 8.1 doesnt recognize my established WiFi connection. That prevents me from using the Marketplace or connecting to my Microsoft Account.

Ive attached 2 screenshots:

Status 1 says "Network - Internet connection". Windows knows im Online..
Status 2 says: "There are no Connections available - Troubleshooting" while in the background my "Fritz WiFi Stick N v2" is connected. This stick is officially outdated, but the company still made a new driver, so it works.

Any ideas? Windows doesnt know I have a wifi-stick..
Does someone know a way to let Windows handle the connection instead of this 3rd party programm?

A:Doesnt recognize Wifi, even though im Online

Uninstall the third party software and only install the driver.

I really need help on this please. My dell 1525 laptop stopped connecting to my wireless connection at home. My gadgets: phone and tablet can connect and detect the wifi but my laptop just can't. It happened after I had an issue with my internet connection.it was not really down but some apps wont work and my outlook was showing offline.there was really something wrong with the connection.so i called my isp , the connection went back, i was able to see that my outlook worked and i can browse. however , my laptop stopped recognizing my home wifi network. it did recognize my neighbor's though, and also i tried connecting it through my celphone's hotspot and it did recognize it as well. I run the trouleshooting for windows and it said about the problem is the ethernet, it might be broken or what. Obviously, I was trying to connect to a wireless connection so the troubleshooting didn't fix the problem.Everything seems, updated, I can connect using the ethernet cable and I updated the drivers.

Please I really need your help on this. I tried calling back my isp and they could just not help. Nothing. I need the laptop for my work.

Welcome Trejo24, Thank you for the product details.  I would first recommend you restart your laptop to see if this fixes the issue furthermore to test the connection by plugging in an ethernet cable. I would ask that you goto "Device manager" , This can be done by clicking "start" and typing "device manager" and check for any warning signs. if you require any drivers they can be found here. Look forward to hearing your response. Kind Regards, ShineyhawkzIT Technician

I have a Windows 8.1 64-bit laptop and a few days ago i ran into an issue.None of my apps on the start screen connect to the internet even though the internet is connected and i'm able to browse the net.I'm not sure but i think this happened right after i uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security.I looked around and thought it's a firewall problem but nothing is blocked in the firewall.I tried restoring default settings in firewall and even tried re-installing Kaspersky but that didn't work.I also tried installing third party firewall software like Comodo but that didn't help either.I ran scans with Kaspersky and Malwarebtytes but they didn't find anything.

I downloaded a microsoft troubleshooter and it said i needed to trust my PC and that apps and start screen sync was turned off

But i can't change any sync setting since it says that OneDrive is not connected to the internet.

What do i do?

A:Windows 8.1 Apps and other software don't recognize WiFi !

I believe it has something to do with your computer not trusting your Microsoft account. USE INTERNET EXPLORER as it is reported Chrome and Firefox does not work with Microsoft Account login.

One of the great benefits of running Windows 8 on multiple PC?s you own, you can easily sync common settings across computers such as passwords for apps, websites, networks in addition to other benefits such as themes, backgrounds and color schemes. To do this, you need to trust your Windows PC.
Start by launching Change PC Settngs (Windows + I)

Under PC settings, click Users tab

On the right hand side of the screen click Trust this PC

Sign into your Microsoft account which can be either a Windows Live ID, Hotmail, MSN or Outlook.com

Click Next to Confirm your computer as a trusted PC or you can visit a existing trusted PC and do the confirmation there from Sign in to your Microsoft account.
The PC?s you sign in with your Microsoft Account from now on will be a lot more seamless.

I JUST bought my laptop three weeks ago. Two weeks ago, I started having issues where I would constantly lose my Internet connection (wifi). This is not happening with any other devices in my home, including my IPad and son's laptop. Now it's not recognizing Internet connections at all. Acer wants to charge me, says it a software issue, not hardware. Ugh!!! It's an Acer Aspire V5-571P. Help!!!

A:new laptop w/windows 8 won't recognize wifi connects

Hi, I know how frustrating this issue has been. I posted the same response over at the Acer Aspire forums, where it seems loads of people are having issues with 'limited' connectivity on their notebooks.
Hope it helps

I did a PC refresh and after doing this a couple times to see the issue, I have finally pinpointed where the culprit lies.

After playing around with my router, uninstalling my anti virus and everything else in between, I found out that the QCA Wifi Driver and the Atheros Blue Tooth Driver are the drivers that have the conflict. In other words, these two drivers are the ones that are making the connection 'limited'.
Everytime I reinstalled these after my PC refresh my computer internet connection became 'limited'. However, after my 3rd PC refresh I decided not to reinstall these drivers. Because of this decision I have had no further issues whatsoever with my internet connection dropping or becoming 'limited' at all. Furthermore, as soon as I boot my computer, the internet is connected, whereas before, with these drivers installed, this was not happening at all.
Clearly, there is a massive issue with these drivers. I had to - as computer illiterate that I am - figure this out for myself.
In conclusion, I will not be installing any new drivers for my Windows 8 Acer Aspire V3-771, until I get official confirmation from an Acer technician regarding these issues. Clearly there is some major problem as after days of research, I ... Read more

Hi everybody, I ran into some issues with my X220 some weeks back and have been trying to fix them to no avail. As far as I can remember I took some time a few weeks back to install the 1.40 firmware-update and also updated the battery-firmware in the same routine. I'm not sure If it was immediately afterwards (since I'm using a dock with LAN), but the wifi-card (Intel 6205) wasn't recognized by the OS anymore. No entry in the device manager! Here's what I've seen/tried so far:1) What I was firstly able ot see was that the device would sometimes show up after returning from sleep when not in the dock.2) Since I have an Ericson WWAN-card i switched mPCIe places. WWAN-card works in both slots. No recognition of the Wifi-card in both. >> So it doesn't seem to be related to mPCIe or the board.3) My guess was a faulty card, so I tried a newly-bought Intel 7260 Wifi-card in the slot.3.1) The Wifi-card must have been recognized by the BIOS, since the whitelist-fault was presented and I had to remove it to even be able to boot again.3.2) As the warranty wasn't my concern anymore anyways I flashed a whitelist-disabled version of the 1.40 firmware. As promised, I was able to boot with the 7260 card.3.3) Yet still, the card is not presented in the device manager.4) Since my Windows 7-installation had quite some time on its shoulders I reckoned that maybe another OS would be able to properly recognize the card. I just freshly installed Windows 10 and again - not... Read more

Update:I used a debian live installation running from a pendrive to look for detected hardware. No wifi was found - again for both cards.I'm really lost for ideas at this point. What really irritates me is that the BIOS/UEFI recognizes the 7260 card with correct VID and PID. Yet still the cards are somehow (I guess) not made available to the operating system. On another note: I've just noticed that I posted in the wrong forum section. Hidy ho all,

I just did a fresh install of 8.1 Pro on my lenovo G505s. So far all over drivers installed flawlessly.

Currently there are 2 devices in my device manager that the drivers haven't installed for. The first is an unknown network controller, and the second is an unknown device.

Now, I've tried running the installer for my wifi card, but nothing happens. When I try to install it manually, by pointing to the drivers manually, it throws an error and reboots. The error says the irql is not less then or equal too. I took a picture of it with my phone, if you all would like to see it. The wired connection is perfectly fine, its only the wireless card that seems to be the problem.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

I have been trying for some time to accomplish the title result. I'm not techie enough to do it.

What I want is to be able to use a Tablet to read in the rear of my home (which is out of range for incoming wifi signal.)

If I can set up the computer to do this, I will cable connect to a router in that area.
I have two computers and could use either.

1.a PC running XP (should update to windows 8.1, but have never bothered to do that, since XP works just fine. (I had this computer sharing to the router, when I had DSL internet connection, using Windows wizard to set it up) Couldn't get it to work when I switched to WIFI internet access) I could switch to win 7 or 8.1 if that would help.

2. a Lap Top running WIN 8.1,

Any help is appreciated.

A:Internet access via WIFI and share WIFI via second router

Due to the age of XP this is not the best option for what you want to do

Either windows 7 or 8.1 have access to Internet connection sharing (ICS) built in

To use ICS you need at least two connections to the local LAN, these can be any mix of wifi or Ethernet.

As you have a laptop you likely already have a system to use for this

There is a tutorial explaining the basics ... and more on this site

Check it out and post back if you have any issues

I am having issues with connecting to the internet. I used to tether my phone for a connection since it is not a wireless machine, and then one day it just stopped working. Since then I have hard wired the connection to the router but it still does not recognize there is a connection. I am using the same connection to write this post, so I know it works and its something with that particular machine. Perhaps a virus has damaged something, I am not sure.

I am running windows xp. I have reinstalled the network driver. I tried to run combofix but each time it freezes during the deleting of files. Not sure when the last virus scan was run, and I am unable to update that software so I have not tried running it lately. I thought a system restore may help, but since this machines been out of commission for months I do not have the ability to go as far back as I need to.

Please, can someone help me troubleshoot this problem? Let me know what additional info you may need and where I can find it just in case I do not know offhand.

Thank you!!!

Ok, a bit of a story here. My dad bought this HP about 1 year 4 months ago. Yes yes he should have talked to me I would have gotten him a nice one and built it myself, it came with XP Home and of course no extra Windows CD, probably because everybody at HP assumes their HD won't die. So I use the computer for the next year and a third, after adding a cheap little 7300GT to it, it came on a 6150LE, bleh, integrated. So over the last year or so I noticed my games get jumpier and jumpier, load slower and slower. About a week ago the HD finally breaks down.

Blah blah blah I get a new hard drive because HP's warranty is up, and I erm procure a copy of Windows XP Profession. I stalled windows just a few hours ago, and Windows boots up, at which point my heart proceeds to jump out of my chest! Now I'm sitting here though, on a stupid old Mac because the other computer simply seems to not recognize the existence of an internet device. Yes I installed XP Pro according to the instructions in the sticky. I've also tried getting to the internet through Qwest's little CD I got with my router. Still no dice. It tells me to call Qwest but of course I can't do that until mourning, and even then they'll probably just tell me to restart my modem or something else redundant. If it helps at all the error code it gives me is as follows.

Attempts to ping the modem IP address have failed. Error Code: QC4010

I made sure everything that was on the XP ... Read more

Hi, newbie here

I built my computer about a month ago, and realized recently that some programs don't recognize I have an internet connection. I cannot login to Uplay for the first time, and Origin will not activate games because it can't access ea servers. When I installed my Adobe CS6 master collection I had to activate from the browser, because adobe couldn't access my connection. I have tried turning off the firewall, deleting the hosts file in my drivers folder, switching to a Google public dns ( with no results. Sorta panicking right now

FYI I have a wireless connection with a D-Link DWA 130 usb wireless adapter

A:Certain programs do not recognize internet connection

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,

Have you tried turning off Avast entirely and not only the firewall? Maybe it's the Web Shield: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120336.0

I've run into a problem in the last couple of days where some programs are not recognizing that I have an internet connection. I'm currently posting this from the computer, so I obviously am able to get online, but programs like Steam, mIRC, and uTorrent are giving me errors.

I've looked around at some other threads, and checked the things they said to, but none of it has worked. I did an ipconfig /all and the top half looks normal, but there are some parts of the bottom half I'm not sure are normal, this is what it's showing:

My question concerns an IBM Thinkpad T20 with XP Pro. We have 4 computers networked. This morning the Thinkpad did not have internet access. All of the other computers are online with no problems. So I tried all the usual stuff, starting with trying a different Ethernet cord to restarting/recycling the modem and router. So, I go to 'network connections' and there is NOTHING in that folder. I tried to 'establish a new connection' etc. I went to the Microsoft web site and looked for fixes and found one where the icons were missing but there was still a connection, but nothing where the icons and the connection are both missing. I tried LSP Fix Software. I ran spyware and virus scans. The computer does not see an internet connection. No error message. I went to the device manager and could not find network adapters, so my question is, Is this a hardware failure of the Ethernet port? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try system restore....then choose a date were your laptop still working fine.

I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home. I have downloaded all the windows updates and installed SP2. The problem is that while I can connect to the internet using IE, all of the other programs on my computer dont detect my internet connection, including Firefox. For example when I installed Microsoft Office I could not register it because it did not detect an internet connection. I am pretty sure that I installed all of the drivers and such from the Dell ResoureCD. Any help would be great.

Don't you by chance have a firewall installed which blocks outgoing requests for everything except IE?
What kind of internet connection are you using? (i.e. dial-up, DSL, ADSL, etc.)

Oh, and WELCOME to TSG!

What happens when the other programs don't detect my internet connection? Is there an error message?

I recently received a Vista PC and I am unable to connect to my Westell Versalink 327W Router. I am attempting a hardwired connection because the PC does not have wireless hardware.

Problem: Unidentified Network. Windows recognizes that the Ethernet cable is connected to the NIC and router, however, Windows does not recognize the router and will not receive data. I can not do anything with the Internet.

Solutions Attempted: I have configured DHCP and TCIP settings correctly (to my knowledge - automatically detect IP and DNS, etc) and I have disabled TCIP6. I have reset the router, attempted updating firmware, and I have attempted creating a broadband connection with a username and password which also will not work.

I noticed in the registry that Windows does indeed recognize the router and has established IP, ...1 DNS, etc.

Probably the most accurate way to explain what I have attempted is EVERYTHING. I've spent 3 days trying to get this PC on the Internet. Windows 7, XP, Mac, Various game consoles, and iPods have absolutely no trouble connecting wired or wirelessly. It's only this particular Vista PC.

For obvious reasons I have no experience with Vista other than the past few days I have spent working with this. I would appreciate anyone working with me to resolve this issue. Please forgive me if I did not follow a particular format for posting or anything else required, this is my first visit and I provided everything I would see necessary.

Hello --

I just moved into a new apartment and inherited a former roommates internet set up. Our router was infected with DNSchanger, so I sought to reset the router and update the firmware. First thing i love the forum and all the knowledge that is spread among the board. Everyone does a great job helping as much as they can. Now down to my problem. I downloaded KaZaA a couple months ago and i felt as if it is time to get rid of this p2p program due to the fact of pop-ups and so on. So doing research i found a program named Kazaabegone. I ran the program and it deleted kazaa ( most of it i am guessing ). So right after i run the kazaabegone i rebot the computer but now the comp wont recognize the internet connection? I check the local area connection status and its fine.. send and recieving as usual. My internet explorer, MSN chat, basically anything that needs to be connected to internet to function WONT. Im to the conclusion that maybe Kazaabegone deleted a system file that was attached to kazaa and caused my comp to not recognize any internet connection? Has anyone went through this problem or have any advice at all? I am stranded without internet at my household! A few sidenotes: Running windows XP, AT&T Broadband is my ISP.

A:HELP: Deleted KaZaA, Windows won't recognize internet!

Did you uninstall Kazaa the regular way first before running that program? I never tried running the program you speak of myself and I'm not so sure what files the program may target.

Are you sure you're still connected to the net and that your connection didn't die? Check your network settings to see if your connection is in fact still alive. Do you have any other computers on the network? If there are other computers, do they have internet connection? Are you connected through a router or directly to the cable modem?

One way I could think of that might solve it is to uninstall your NIC card, reboot and have it redetect, reinstall, and reconfigure your connection. That may be the quick fix without doing too much checking. Good luck

Okay I kind of have a complicated setup.

I have a wired Linksys router (BEFSR41) and a wireless-G linksys router (WRT54G). I have 3 PCs I'm trying to network, all running Windows XP. PC-1 and my cable modem is connected to the wired router. I have a cable from the wired router to the wireless routers Internet port. PC-2 is connected to the wireless router via a cable. PC-3 is connected wirelessly to the router. The wireless router is setup as gateway (set in firmware config) and DHCP server disabled (tried turning gateway and DHCP options on and off). All three computers can access the internet but only PC-2 and PC-3 can access each other. Anyone have any ideas?

A:PCs dont recognize each other, internet connection works

From what you have mentioned regarding your network setup, I gather that the two routers are connected to one another. This has created essentially three different network segments:

1) the wired router and its connected PC
2) the wire between the routers can be interpreted as a "network"
3) the two pcs connected to the second router

The reason that the PCs connected to the second router see one another is that they are in the same network segment. The trick is to tell them where to find the other pc. If you try to ping the pc on the first router, I would be surprised if you got a reply. I would suggest setting up a static routes between the two routers to tell each router where to find the other pcs.

The internet works because each router is handling the NAT translation for its connected hosts (pc's). If you elect to have one router hand out all DHCP addresses, this may also help your situation.

Hi, Many machines (and devices) still support 2.4GHz only and this may be still around for another few years. For older machines, the chance to upgrade the sireless card is very slim to none. Now what is your machine ?  Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108Regards.
