Windows 10 DISM tool - unable to find Source File

Q: Windows 10 DISM tool - unable to find Source File

Hello everyone,

I've been having a terrible time trying to diagnose and fix corrupted system files. I have recently updated to windows 10 during the free upgrade process. I was running Windows 7 Pro before I updated.

I have tried sfc /scannow command multiple times, in safe mode and in normal operation.

Every time I get this message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios."

So researching online, I found that using the DISM tool will fix this issue.

However every time I run the command, I get this:

"Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

I've even tried mounting the windows 10 iso that I downloaded from the media creation tool and running it again, however I still get the same message to no avail. I've seen other forums with users saying to use the original windows 10 iso and not to use the iso created by the media creation tool. However I can't seem to find this file and am not sure it would work anyways.

I've searched this forum and found multiple threads for this same issue. It turns out people had to d/l another .iso than the one media creation tool made them. However, every download link for those .iso files are now not available.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Preferred Solution: Windows 10 DISM tool - unable to find Source File

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running an HP Pavilion notebook with Windows 8.1 and Norton Internet Security. Till last week, it was quick and dependable. But a week ago, it was still quick online, but it started doing all sorts of weird stuff, like shutting down all my open applications at once and taking forever to turn on. So I tried restoring to my HP recovery disks from Jan 2014, ran Windows Updates for two days, and then started having different problems. So I tried again: I restored to a Macrium Reflect image from Jan 2015 and then ran updates for four hours, reloaded all my programs a second time (Arghhh!). The PC was fine for a couple of days, but then was very very slow to start up. So I did the following:
Ran the command sfc /scannow, and was notified it found errors it could not repair.
As advised by the Microsoft website, I went into my administrator account in Safe Mode with Networking and tried to delete the files in %windir%\winSxsTemp\PendingDeletes and \PendingRenames. The system didn't allow me to delete files in the PendingDeletes folder; the message read, "You need permission from a trusted installer." The system also didn't allow me to delete files in the PendingRenames folder; the message read, "You need permission from System."
Tried to run sfc /scannow in Safe Mode anyway, and got the same errors.
In Safe Mode with Networking, I ran Dism /online /cleanup-image /restoreHealth, but got the message, "The source files could not be downloaded. Use the 'so... Read more

Hi,

Today, running sfc /scannow reported corrupted files it could not repair. I followed instructions here: DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image but I am unable to get DISM to find the Install.wim file even though I can see it quite clearly in Explorer.

I used the following command: DSIM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:T:\sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

The path to the ISO on the DVD drive is definitely correct, but I keep getting an 'Error 0x800f081f The source files could not be found'.

Has anyone got any suggestions how I can fix this?

Kind wishes ~ Patrick

I've run Combofix and Malwarebytes, but all I've been able to do is stall the audio for a couple of hours, and eventually the audio starts up again.

I'm trying to test the integrity of some ".cab" packages through DISM and Package Manager but I keep getting the generic error message "the system cannot find the file specified".

In Package Manager, I use the syntax,

Command Prompt> pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:c:\test\test.cab

Alternatively, I might add quotes around the pathname:

Command Prompt> pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:"c:\test\test.cab"

The error received in pkgmgr is:

Operation failed with 0X80070002.  The system cannot find the file specified.

My initial impression was that my syntax was incorrect, though I can't spot the error.  The path points to "test.cab" which is a renamed windows addon which contains the necessary "svcpack" folder and the "entries_XX.ini"
file.  I've used several different ".cab" files, including some downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, with the same result.  Hopefully this rules out the possibility of a corrupt or incompatible file.  I've also tried this
whole procedure on different computers, and have received the exact same error code, so i doubt the pkgmgr tool istelf is corrupt.

Lastly, I've tried an alternative Windows 7/8 tool DISM to try to achieve essentially the same task using the following syntax in an elevated command prompt:

Commnand Prompt> dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:c:\test\test.cab

This produces a similar error:

I am trying to complete DISM on my Windows 8.1 installation to get it into tiptop shape before upgrading to Win 10.
But despite trying countless times I haven't succeeded.
My questions are:

How long is the sort of upper limit of waiting for DISM to complete? It's been at 40% all night.... Previous attempts from my USB stick and another person's CD have at least cut out after 1 hour or so and said that it can't find the files (even though the file it wants is in the source!). Any info that anyone has on this would be helpful.

Does the source need to be from the exact same CD that Windows was installed from, or something like that? Or is it ok to simply use another Windows Pro disc. I would have thought it was the same?

Use the ?source? option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source. The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I have run System Restore and, after doing so, the DISM instruction runs properly and returns the message that it has run successfully and repaired the corrupted components. However, running Windows Update again followed by running DISM reproduces the problem reported above.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. I should add that I do not have an original Microsoft Windows 8 DVD as my version of Windows 8 Pro (64bit) - now updated to Windows 8.1 Pro - is Dell's OEM version.

A:unable to delete folder and can't read from source file or disk

You might want to give Unlocker a try. It deleted a folder I was unable to delete any other way on my Win 7 Pro X64 system.

If you have Win 7 X64 then you will need the 64bit version of Unlocker.

Hello all, I will try to explain my problem as clear as I can. I am not super tech savvy, so I need your help.

I found a thread that seemed to have the same problem but it did not fix mine.

Before I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10, everything worked fine. Now it has been around 2 weeks since the upgrade and I am running into a problem. My user on the PC seems to be working fine, but when the other person trys to log into her account on the PC things go weird.

First it was signing her in with a temporary account, this was solved by logging her in later.

Now it just takes a much longer time to load things when we start up our accounts. Sometimes the PC was freezing and we were not able to do anything, unless we restart the PC.

Today I ran sfc /scannow. "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Then I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, "The component store is repairable, The operation completed sucsesfully"

Then I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, "Error: 0x800f081f The source files could not be found."

Now I dont know what to do, the other thread advised doing some other Dism but stating a source file. But I dont know how to do that, or anything with ISO files and all of that.

If someone could advise me what to do, or try to help, I would appreciate it.

Hi,

I just completed a clean install of Windows 10 Pro...all was going fine, but I wanted to run both scf and DISM...

If SFC was not able to repair some or all of the files there are a few options including a repair install from the OS dvd, and DISM (win 8 & UP)
DISM
If you are on win 8 and up you can (and should) run DISM if SFC found errors it could not fix
From an DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:elevated command prompt*
Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth . (please note the space after "dism", & "online" & "image")
If the repair is successful you may want to re-run SFC just to check.

Have never had this issue before...but I can't seem to be able to direct DISM elevated command to a .iso file:
To run a system file check (SFC)
Go to start
Type CMD
Right click and run as Administrator
(called an elevated command prompt)
If you want to verify and repair the OS type sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and "/")
If you just want to check (verify only) the OS type sfc /verifyonly (no changes will be made using verify only)
If you get the error message "cannot find source files"you need to have an ISO file mounted and need to specify where it is located with the below command
DISM /Online /Cleanu... Read more

Hi,
- Why did you run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool?
Generally, we will get this error 0x800F081F when there is any corruption in the system file. Let’s run the system file checker scan and check if there are any corrupt system files.
SFC (System File Checker) is a tool which scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.
Refer the following article for more information on using SFC tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
You may also try this command and see if it makes any difference.
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
Keep us posted on the status of the issue.

About 6-8weeks ago (guesstimate) I started getting a random window popup at various times while browsing online. The semi-odd thing about it is #1-same type of popup on both ie & my Chrome browsers; #2- I hadn't downloaded/installed anything around then; #3 I havenot been able to find their source; #4- Have not found any scan (malwarebytes, Panda, pcpitstop, etc) that seems to locate it, nor does my Winpatrol. The popup windows vary in advertisers, but most frequent is for the game "Big Farm". They are always fullsized page & open in a new window (not just a new tab), with no toolbar, etc on top. Of course it can get irritating!
Now, as of 2days ago I've suddenly gotten a new & BIGGER annoyance... Quite often, especially when I open my browser & go to do anything (such as switch sites/pages, open history, etc), I get a blackish popup come down about 3/4 over my page, and has a video box (which seldom starts to play for at least 10seconds) & below video has a button that says "SKIP AD in 15 seconds" & then counts down to 0, then I can hit the skip button, & it goes away. It also happens just the same nomatter if I'm using Chrome or ie.
Any clue??? If I had an idea of their name or source, I should be able to find some sign of their existence in regedit, but I don't seem to find any indication anywhere including at top or bottom of screen when they open. The two types of popups do not look or act anyway similar/related,

The /Online parameter does not mean connected to the internet, it means running DISM against a booted system.

Hello, as you already know from the title I have problems with the windows utilities that fix corruptions. After I upgraded to build 1607, those utilities worked, but now after a few weeks I tried to do them again after some driver updates just to be sure and now they find corruptions and can't fix them. I modified my windows a bit, nothing too serious, but since then after getting the errors I reverted them back to win default ( I think I did all of them, not 100% sure, since I don't write down my modifications... silly me) Here are the logs from an hour or so ago, when I tried the DISM / SFC combo. Please help

A:Windows DISM and SFC fail to fix corruptions. DISM error 1726 / WIN 10

All of the CSI Payload corrupt warnings reference .lnk files only. These are File Explorer shortcuts only, not actual binary files themselves. I wouldn't worry about them unless you're noticing issues related to the files they "touch." Try accessing cleanmgr.exe at the command line (or in the run dialog box) and see if it works. If it does, that tells me Explorer still knows where to find things without the shortcuts. Worst case, you can always navigate to these items manually.

OTOH, if you have access to the ISO from which you made your most recent install, you can use that install.wim (from the \Sources folder) as the target for the /source parameter in the DISM command. This should find those missing links (pun intended) and set you straight.

Hello,

Windows 10 power user here. I've been viewing help topics here for some time and found this forum very useful. However, there is one problem that I can't seem to solve.

Whenever I use the DISM tool to repair Windows 10, I get the error "0x800f081f - The source files could not be found".

I tried the ESD, WIM and ONLINE options using a mounted Windows 10 installation ISO, and pointed to it correctly in the command (I followed Brink's tutorial). However, I get the same error. I don't understand why DISM cannot find it if it is running with administrative privileges, and I can CLEARLY see the file in Explorer. I also tried copying the .esd and .wim file to Desktop. Again, the same error. I also tried turning off all firewalls temporarily but to no avail.

Here is my dism.log file.

But if I run it again immediately, it gives the same message. I've rebooted too, same result, four times now. I've also run sfc /scannow, it does not find any errors.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks

I've tried SO many threads and techniques to fix this, but I'm unable to, this has been a VERY deep rabbit hole I've traversed and can't find my way back out.

Let's start at the beginning...

I stopped auto installing updates because I had issues with doing so in the past, so my windows updates stacked up for a bit. (I know, I suck!)

I started installing them all last month and found 4 that would not install, a couple of them seem to be serious and my friend recommend I get them fixed.

I have done an SFC /scannow at least two dozen times now on my Windows 10 tablet, resulting in "Found corrupt files but was unable to fix them" message

Several posts on this site alone tell me to do a "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" all of which people said that fixed the problem, however it did not work for me, I get an error every time I try it.

Error" 0x00f081f "The source files could not be found. Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature."

I cannot get it to work at all, unlike basically everybody else on this forums (according to Google)

Any ideas? How can I fix this and ultimately fix my Windows?

A:Dism problem "The source files could not be found"

Use the Tech Bench link to download your version of Windows 10
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/techbench
Once you have the iso downloaded, right click at the ISO > click Mount > leave it there

Then open the elevated command prompt and copy and paste this................

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note : H is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time.

Hi all,

My computer has been working perfectly, until this morning when I switched it on and the screen flashed up two messages...

Windows cannot find - C:/DOCUME~1/user/LOCALS~1/temp/dwm.exe

and

Could not locate or run - C:/DOCUME~1/user/LOCALS~1/temp/dwm.exe

The upshot of all this is that I can't connect to the internet, however, I can do some things such as use Windows Media Player and AVG.. if that is relevant at all? I've tried to manually locate the file via a search but to no avail.. checked in the recycle bin in case it mysteriously got sent there but it's not there. I've also tried restarting the computer, defraging it and also running my anitvirus.

I really don't know whats happening as the computer has been fantastic... I don't download any music or movies.. the only thing I download is World of Warcraft. However, WoW has been perfect as well?

Thank you to anyone who can help me,

tj

Could not locate or run - C:/DOCUME~1/user/LOCALS~1/temp/dwm.exe

the upshot of all this is that I can't connect to the internet or run anything.

Thank you to anyone who can help me,

tj

A:computer unable to find an .exe file?

There's a startup item in the registry that wants to launch dwm.exe. Usually normal programs that launch are not found in the temp folder. Usually it's viruses that get installed there. What AV software are you running? It may have partially cleaned the system.
For some reason the mods don't allow people like me to respond to virus related questions (even though I clean viruses every week). Make sure you've FULLY cleaned the machine by visiting the virus section of this forum for instructions.
