Red Cross/delete Icon Instead Of C Drive Icon

Q: Red Cross/delete Icon Instead Of C Drive Icon

I got infected with some malware. I'm not sure which one it was. I had popup ads coming up on my computer all the time, and error messages with bad grammar on them.I installed Mc Afee, Ad Aware, Spybot search and Destroy, vundo remover and run them all. I also ran Mc Afee Stinger as suggested on here. Each of them removed some malware.I still have a Red x (like a delete icon) instead of the hard drive icon when I look at my hard drive in My Computer. Also if I disconnect the internet from my PC I get IE "Work Offline - No connection to the internet is currently available" messages come up, even though I don't use IE!!! Sygate firewall is reporting that windows explorer is trying to connect to the internet as well, I don't know if that's part of it or what. Can someone decipher my HijackThis log and/or help me out? Preferred Solution: Red Cross/delete Icon Instead Of C Drive Icon

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello 3lpete and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It's clean. Let's try a different scanner and see what we can see. Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporoary folders. Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser, do this also:Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.Click the Empty Selected button.NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. If you use Opera browser, do this also:Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).Click the Empty Selected button.NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. Now download WinPFind35u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind35U.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator). In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:Reg - BotCheck
File - Additional Folder Scans
Do not change any other settings. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. Make sure that the first line is code with brackets around it [] and that the last line is /code with brackets around it [].If, after posting, the last line is not /code with brackets around it then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts or attach it as a file.Cheers.OT

hi, i think my computer has a quite serious problem, yesterday i tried to install a few programs n maybe one of them contains a virus, when i did the virus scanning, i found there's trojan virus there.
i cudn't open my c: or my documents, and almost all.

i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)
and it works

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

can u please tell me what is going on with my laptop?
and what should i do?

thanks a lot.
waiting for ur reply
thx!
;p

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

The Network Icon (wired) in my Task Tray has a Red Cross against it. No error shown in Device Manager. Network Diagnostics don't find an error and I don't seem to have any issues LAN or WAN but Automatic Windows Updates are not working. Manual Updates are OK and all the associated services seem to be running. I don't know if these two are connected.

I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Hi and welcome toTSF If in fact you are connected but you see the "not connected" icon and
status you describe, you may have two wireless configuration utilities
running simultaneously, and you should disable one of them it may have been installed accidentally

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance
Noelu

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

Dear folk

My desktop windows 7 64 bit was working fine til I walked up yesterday and there was a red cross on the network icon!!!

Ethernet cable working fine as when i hooked it to my laptop everything is working fine , means problem lies within the desktop and nothing wrong with cable or router port.

Troubleshoot that I had done so far :

Restarted desktop 3 times, uninstalled LAN driver, connected new Ethernet cable

What else I need to check to find out what is going on ?

Thanks

Help!! I have a new (ish) laptop and everything has been fine until a couple of days ago when a red cross appeared on the speaker icon.  I've run the diagnostic tool by clicking on the icon but only my Bose wireless headphones appear in the list, and the tool is unable to resolve the probem with the speakers.  When I use the Bose wireless headphones, the red cross goes and the headphones work fine.  I've tried the Device Manager too to clear the red cross issue, but cannot find a way for it to help resolve the problem. The laptop doesn't have any sound from the speakers, nothing.  If I plug normal/ regular headphones into the jack, then the Bang & Olufsen message appears on the screen to notify that the headphones have been connected, but there is no sound from the headphones and the cross remains on the speaker icon. If I hover over the red cross then a message appears "no speakers or headphones are plugged in"

Hello @George73,  Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with... Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

A:Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

Hi shah-aijaz, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the wifi on your notebook. I have done some research and I have found that the computer that you have listed does NOT have Windows 7. Are you certain that you are giving the proper model number of your computer?  Please check the bottom of your computer and the product number should be listed on a white sticker by a bar code.

Please write back at your convenience.

Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

A:Trojan/Spyware infected! [Red icon with white cross appear on task bar] Please help!

Just want to give an update, I think the trojan or spyware not only disabled HijackThis to run, it does the same thing for other anti-virus software as well. Kaspersky and Windows Defender neither will start now on my laptop. I tried safe mode too, no luck! I guess online scan is the only way to scan it, which I attached the log in the first post, Please help......guys!

Thanks ahead!!!

Any advice? As you can guess I'm a novice.

I have a new quick launch icon on the taskbar. It is a red circle with a white cross. There are also pop-up dialog boxes associated with this new icon. These include, "Click here to protect your computer from spyware!" and "Attention! system detected a potential hazard (TrojanSPM/LX) on your computer that may infect executable files. You private information and and PC safety is at risk. To get rid of unwanted spyware and keep your computer safe you need to update your current security software. I am running the following:
Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 on a Dell XPS DXP051. Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

At this point, I have disconnected my computer from the internet and have tried to do a "repair" on the OS using the Windows installation CD. Then, I restarted and the red circle/white cross icon was still there. Next, I performed a Trend Micro HijackThis-v2.0.2, and saved the log file. I am currently working off my laptop to troubleshoot this virus/malware. Please help me solve this problem. Thank you.

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

Hey Guys,

I removed the AC Power cable for a split second (battery was 100% at the time) and my computer just shutdown.
I replugged and rebooted and now I've got a "red cross" next to the power icon in my system tray (see attached image)

If I put the mouse over it - it just says "Fully Charged 100%" and shows my current power plan; which is "high performance" and been using it since I got the laptop.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion DV5.
Computer's about a year old now.
I've update all my drivers and checked Device manager and there are no errors/warnings for anything battery related.

Any suggestions on how to get this fixed or what the problem might be?

A:"Red Cross" on Power Icon + Shutdown when AC Power removed.

Your laptop is not detecting your battery. Try removing the battery, and putting it back in.

You might have to buy a new battery.

It's very odd. It just appeared the other day and I have no idea how I caused it. Usually that means no output device detected, but it is detected and sound works.

Hovering over the sound icon it says:

Volume: 100
Speakers
Realtek High Definition Audio

The volume control won't display.

So I recentaly recived a nice Compaq Presario R3000, quite an upgrade on what I used to work on.
Anyway....

I just performed a clean install of Windows XP Home. Then I took out my flash drive and ran back and forth from my sisters computer downloading drivers.

So this one piece of hardware, witch is a wireless bluetooh card that is built in, Has a driver caleld "Bluetooth by HP" I have installed it and that seems to make the card work very well.

But... I am a very organized person and I absolutely HATE IT when I have icons on my desktop that I don't use. It really gets on my nerves...

So I tried ol' click and press delete. Nothing happens, I right click the icon and theirs no Delete option. If I unistall Bluetooth by HP it gets rid of the icon but also the driver.

Any one have any experiance with this and can help me get rid of this icon?

Much apperciated.

Well, most of the time, if you use Tweakui you can "disable" the icon (doesn't delete it, but it isn't shown.) This also works well with icons such as " network neighborhood" and "recycle bin".

Ok, this just happened recently and I don't know what is causing it. I'll try to give u a brief overview of the situtation I'm in. XP used to be on my D driver (74gigs), it got screwed up (BSOD) at the time, I didn't know as much computers, so I installed XP to my C driver (4 gigs). This has worked pretty fine up until when SP2 was released. I can't install SP2 because XP takes up about 4 gigs by itself. Without SP2 I just have been running some extra firewalls so compensate.

Well about 4 days ago, I noticed whenever I open up my computer it takes like 7 or 8 seconds before the hard drivers appear. Then I went into network connections to look at my internet icon (to check the settings). I opened it up and nothing was there. The only thing there was on the far left it was asking me if I wanted to setup a network ( my internet is working on all the computers). I have ran 2 different spyware scans and found nothing, ran mcaffee scans and nothing. I can't restore my computer because all the restores got deleted when I was trying to free space on my drives.

Where do I go, usually I can solve tech problems but I mean this is beyond weird? What do I do first, if you need more information just ask because I really need some advice.

Hi.
The code below will do the following if you have a table set up in WORD:
1. Sequence down a column of cells one after another while:
2. being given the choice to embed a selectable pdf file from a File Open dialog popup after which
3. the embedded object is displayed as a icon ( icon set always same set in code)
4. goes to next lower cell and repeats from step 2
5. keeps doing this until you click Cancel in the File Open dialog box

My question is how do I make the icon conform a set size after it is embedded? Right now I have to go back and resize all the icons after I finish the embedding. I think the trick is to use a 'With' loop but haven't figured it out yet. Here's the code. Thanks for your help:

This is a problem that started with the last windows update (which included an update for my wireless network adapter which I have since rolled back).

My setup is as follows: I have a dual band router. The 5Ghz band's SSID is (for example) Testg and the2.4 Ghz band's SSID is Testg2.

When I click on the network status icon and hover over the Testg connection, it shows the SSID as Testg2. When I go into the Manage Wireless Networks and open the properties for this connection, it shows the SSID as Testg.

I have fooled around with renaming the connections as all of a sudden one showed up as Test 2 3 with the SSID of Testg

Currently I have three connections listed in manage networks: Testg, Testn, and Test2. Testg and Testn (Testg was previously Test 2 3 renamed Testg) and Testn (previously named Testg renamed to Testn so I could rename Test 2 3) both show the SSID being Testg. The Test2 connection shows the SSID of Testg2.

Looking at this information by left clicking and hovering over the connections on the network status icon, they show as follows: Testg shows an SSID of Test2, Testn shows an SSID of Testg, and Test2 shows an SSID of Testg2.

Why is the SSID different for the same connection depending on where I look at it and is there a fix for this?

Thanks.

bruce

I'm curious if it's possible to change the IE 8 address bar (drop down list) delete icon. It's the little red X that shows up when you move your mouse down the IE 8 drop down address bar list when choosing a website to visit. IE has a new option that allows users to manually delete single web entries and I just don't like the look of the little red X.

I uploaded a pic of it in case people don't know what I'm talking about.
