Netflix and Windows lock screens....

Q: Netflix and Windows lock screens....

It seems a little silly to come here for help on this, but I'm having an issue watching movies on Netflix since I got a new Windows 8 PC...

I can watch them, no problem... but after an hour or so (I've not actually timed it yet) it goes to the lockscreen because of "inactivity".

I've scoured the web and done the 'fixes' to disable the lockscreen, and to edit the delay for it to kick in, but neither option has helped. (According to the sites I've been on, disabling the lock is only for the timeout period to turn off the display when you have already locked the computer, and that is not the issue for me.

What I have done, is to enable the option to display the console lock... and I have set it to 0 minutes, hoping that 0 would mean never, since "never" is not an option... didn't work. I set it to 600 minutes, hoping for a 10 time frame, just for giggles... and it still cut off after the hour or so into a movie.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I am disabled, and spend a great deal of time watching movies from my bed.

Thanks, in advance, for any help. Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Preferred Solution: Netflix and Windows lock screens....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome!

I believe I've heard of this issue before with the Netflix app. Nothing else in Windows will cause it to go the lock screen?

If I remember correctly, I think this could be a bug with the app itself...

Hello, I received a new laptop and do as i usually do and do a clean install of windows 10 pro. Everything is running well but when i attempt to set the lock screen background image there seems to be an issue. For example the image i set for my lock screen is applied when i do a WIN-L but on restart the image is completely different.

Here is the strange part so say i select image X the WIN-L lock screen saves it as image X but the boot lockscreen is image Y. If i set an image to image Y for the lock screen the boot lock screen image goes to image Z. I personally think the callback for the selected image is not the one windows is pulling to be used as it is a different boot background every time i change it.

If any more information is needed please let me know and thanks for the help

Strange problem here. I have four Dell desktops set up the same way as my Dell laptops, however, the desktops all work fine but the laptops don't. I have the latest Windows 10 Anniversary Edition installed and the only way I can get it to work is by installing a basic build, with nothing kept.

If I install Windows 10 and keep the existing files, upon boot, the laptop loops between the login and lock screens ad infinitum. The only thought is that I have all but Shutdown and Restart set and all other options greyed out. Is there an easy Regedit patch available to reactivate Hibernate, Sleep, Lock, Switch user, etc?

My plan is to restore a previous Windows 10 image and reactivate all of the above options and then to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 to try and prove my theory.

Hi, it sounds like you may be saying that if you do a clean install on your laptops, all is fine.. (or at least if you opt not to keep existing files) "If I install Windows 10 and keep the existing files".

If so, this suggests sthg you have installed or configured is interfering.

Hibernate isn't recommended these days.

Consider this, and try powercgf -a from a command prompt:
I have two new laptops (an HP and a Gateway) with Win 7 Pro on each, and set up
exactly the same. On the Gateway, the sleep and hibernate work fine.
On the HP, the sleep and hibernate are greyed out.

Using cmd: powercfg -a
The Gateway shows " the following sleep states are available ... Standby (S3),
Hibernate Hybrid Sleep"

The HP shows "sleep states not available..system firmware does not support
standby state" "legacy driver vgasave .. prevents this standby state"

I've been battling with XP for a couple weeks now, and I've decided to ask for 3rd party help. Here's the problem:

Symptoms: When running anything other than IE or MS Office programs, XP Blue screens after 10-15 minutes; when installing programs (especially games) XP lags, locks up, and eventually blue screens; when left running (especially if Bittorrent is running) XP Blue screens; when running Itunes (especially if my Ipod is connected) I get lag, then blue screens.

My System:
Dell Dimension 4600 (3-4 years old) with XP home edition

Pentium 4 (2.6 GHz)
1.5 GB of RAM (512MB standard, I've just added 1 GB)
Nvidia GeForce 5200 Video Card
Soundblaster audio card (I don't know the model off the top of my head)
Logitech Wireless Desktop (mouse and keyboard)

Shaw Highspeed internet, Shaw Secure Extended as my firewall/antivirus (up to date definitions)

What I've done: I run RegistryFix, and it helps only minimally. I've formatted twice so far, and on the second format I partitioned my system into two drives, C (windows and Drivers, 7 GB) and D (everything else, 70 GB). I've defragged C drive, and my PC Bluescreens when I defrag D drive. The blue screen states I've run out of physical memory, so I bough more RAM (the 1 GB stick) but that didn... Read more

Hi all,

I have this odd error with changing the lock screen that's been driving me mad and I really don't want to have to reinstall just because of this.

Going to PC settings shows this screen:

Note how the lock screen tile is empty. Clicking on it brings me to this:

So no lock screen image choices are being shown to me at all. I can click "Browse" and select a new image, but nothing happens. Choosing a lock screen slideshow does nothing as well.

I've tried many, many things, from resetting libraries and messing with the SystemData folder (in fact, that's the only way that I can change my lock screen, by replacing images in the SystemData folder.) Deleting the SystemData folder to try and generate a clean one doesn't work.

Any suggestions? Could anybody provide me with a clean, default version of the SystemData folder?

hi, my first post here, i have had a nightmare with my 9800XT card over the last few months, whenever i install any drivers above 4.10 Cat. it seems to give me blue screens randomly, i have updated my motherboard chipset ect.. As ATI advised me to but still im getting it. Even today while running a 3d Mark test i got a blue screen. My GFX card (In the ATI overdrive panel) says its at 70-80*C outside of a game, In the "PC health" section in the start up the CPU is 30-40*C. I mainly get the problem playing the following Games, Battlefield 2, Joint operations and Blackhawk down. i cant figure this out and thought i would post here.

Im currently using the latest ATi drivers (5.7)

Any help would be grateful.

Jonathan.

The 9800 series cards run very hot. Your card fan may be failing. You can get a VGA Silencer for about $15. It replaces the fan and heatsink and does a great job of cooling the card. You may also need to do a clean install of Windows if you've changed the video driver alot.

Help,

SP is my OS

About a week ago my computer slowed down in every way.
1. During bootup the computer started taking really long for the desktop icons to go from the generic microsoft icon to the proper icon image. So boot up time tripled.
2. Mouse clicks got super slow, normal to 8 plus seconds, depending on its mood.
3. Somehow Adobe Flash will not work. Tried to install an upgrade and the computer says I have a more advanced version already installed, but You Tube says I need an Adobe Flash Player upgrade installed.
4. While trying to burn a DVD twice my computer locked up with a White screen once and a green screen the second time.
5. for months now MBAM is always opening and trying to run a scan (5-10 time a day).
6. for months the AVG is always telling me to reboot my computer.

My computer is slow in almost every way no matter what you do on it. Today i booted up and it is moving fast enough for me t get off this message to you

BTW One other thing I had a desk top that did the same thing a year ago. In my current desktop it needed a power supply. So I took the one out of my old desktop and installed it in this computer. After 8 months this computer is starting to act similar to the broken desktop. Could a faulty Power Supply cause issues with the computer. Just had to ask.

Thanks,

Could be Windows isnt seeing those drives for what they are?? Even worse, a bus problem?

Not a techie. Can't get straight answer ANYWHERE. New laptops tend to NOT have indicators on the keys. Hoping Windows 10 has indicators that can be turned on and PROBABLY would show up in the tray at the bottom right of the screen.
I have heard of sites where such things can be downloaded but again NOT a techie, so I hesitate to go outside of Windows/Microsoft for downloads. I do not know what download sites are safe or spoofs.

Please plain English ... i.e. go to settings etc. Or just give me a Microsoft approved site for download.

Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz

Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more

hi i've had a slew of problems with my new computer

-i get blue screened and it says a warning message that isn't the same from the previous windows, you know hwo it normally said your system has become unstable and what not. this message says that there was an error and windows is shutting itself down to prevent further damage

-i get black screened(iduno if thats the term) but what happens is i'll be working on some files and then out of nowhere my monitor goes black, the computer and monitor stay on, but the monitor goes into some sort of standby mode thing where the power light flashes

-i also ocassionally have trouble rebooting one of my other computers and whenever it gives me a problem the screen goes black and there's a green line that goes across the top of the monitor

iv'e tried spy ware removing programs/anti viruses/fire walls none of them seem to be working

any help would be greatly apprecieated

A:Solved: blue screens black screens green screens

The issues sound a bit like a hardware failure, the blue STOP screen could be hardware or software.

The Black screen sounds like the PC has died, but the power supply continues to run. This could well be hardware.

Both issues could be something like overheating of the CPU (are all fans running, is the CPU fan dust clogged - shouldnt be if it's "new")?

If it's "new" and under warranty, take it back.

It would have helped to know if it was a desktop or laptop though.

I'm beginning with this link because it is related to this previous issue. Its still the same computer with the same general problems. However, I discovered that by ensuring that windows media player was constantly playing music, the computer operates fast and smoothly for as long as I need it to (sometimes longer than 24 hours), albeit with the fan running full speed and flooding the house with its noise. All has been well until the other day I needed to burn some cds and reconnected the cdrom. Since then, its been subject to occasional freezes, mostly when left to sit when I leave the house on a whim. I've noticed that I sometimes return to a black screen, but erroneously attributed it to my computers failed attempts to hibernate (even though that option is disabled). Anyway, its been working wonderfully anyway when I've needed to use it. However, today I was doing a little basic browsing, only about three tabs open of an automotive website I frequently read. The screen randomly went all white while loading a page, and the computer froze up. My only option when it does that is to do a hard restart, so I did. I decided to disconnect my cdrom again. The computer then booted up normally, showed my desktop and loaded all icons and everything, but before everything was up and running, the whole screen went black and it froze. Then I got this computers very first "blue ... Read more

OK, I have read you last thread and sounds like you made some progress.

Lets see the details of the Blue Screen, follow this guide to attach it to your next post.

First locate your minidump files, they are usually found by clicking on your C: drive, in Windows Explorer, then click on Windows to view the contents. If your operating system is installed under a different drive letter then look there. They should be stored under a file called minidump. The files will have a .dmp extension.
Zip up at least 6 of the most recent files into one zip folder and save on your desktop (if there are less then just zip up what you have).
NOTE To zip up a file in Windows (all versions). Right-click the file or folder, click on Send To, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder and save it to your desktop.
Open Windows Explorer, click on Desktop in the left column so you can see the zip file. In the left column click on C: > Windows > Minidump and then drag & drop any additional .dmp files into the zip folder.

• Below the Message Box click on Go Advanced. Then scroll down until you see a button, Manage Attachments. Click on that and a new window opens.
• Click on the Browse button, find the zip folder you made earlier and doubleclick on it.

Now, whenever she tries to watch anything on Netflix either through the ap or browser the video seems to show a few scenes in like a flash sequence. It then either pauses on a scene or a black screen for a few seconds then resumes playing. Otherwise the playing is okay, a little jumpy but still watchable. Anyone else having issues with the Netflix app in Windows 10 Home? I upgraded my main desk top PC with Win 10 at the weekend and all went well. Today I installed the Netflix app from Windows Store and it won't load. It starts to open, then simply shuts down.

I tried downloading the app to my wifes laptop (which was upgraded earlier today) with exactly the same result, so presumably it's an app issue or more general Windows 10 issue. Any thoughts?

Hello, for the past 2 days the Netflix App for windows 8 has been acting up.
It started when the Store app kept crashing and suggested that I refresh my PC, Take note that netflix worked like a charm before this. So I refreshed my PC, set everything up and such, then I try to launch netflix. All is fine in the start, it starts to load, the dots spin in the circle, then they stop spinning for a few seconds staying in place, then they dissapear for a 1-8 seconds, then netflix will minimize, bringing me to my start menu, not even showing a error. I have tried re-installing it, seeing if windows was activated, Syncing it, checking for updates, updating all my other apps to see if it had something to do with that, downloading the most recent version of Silverlight, but it didnt work. Its getting really frustrating because I just want to watch my movies.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly. Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS. If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing. To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. A:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

A:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Anybody know anything about this? I installed the app and it simply won't launch. I keep getting this error with the text "can't communicate with Netflix, try again later."

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app to no avail.

Notes: I originally tried to install the app with using a global Windows login. Have since changed from a local account. Still same problem.

tl;dr :
I am using the Netflix app from Windows 10 store. The app works fine on my laptop however when i connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI and play want to watch a video on the TV i get black screen on the video with the menu, audio and subtitle still working fine. But when i drag netflix app back to the laptop the video is back again. No error code either.
Any idea on how to fix or troubleshoot this further ? Im running out of idea now.

More details:
I tried this these things so far, which did not work :
- Re-installed Netflix from Windows store.
- A new 4k HDMI cable to make sure HDCP handshake is okay.
- Installed newest and old nvidia video driver.
- Connected laptop to another TV
- Microsoft Edge browser

The only way i can watch Netflix now on my TV using the laptop is using Chrome or Firefox which has horrible quality, MS Edge doesn't work either. I updated windows 10 just couple days so i also suspect that may a reason but i used to get black screen sometimes before that too, but it used to work again after restarting the pc another day. But now nothing seems to work.
Only thing i can think of now is too reinstall windows or roll back on windows updates which i dont really want to do.

Hello,I have been trying to access my Netflix account from Windows Media Center and I know that the Netflix tile is supposed to appear to the left of the "Recorded Video" tile, however it does not show up, and I have been unsuccessful in all of my attempts(See below). (Note that all other features of Windows Media Center work fine) Before I begin, let me tell you all about my system:- Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x32 Service Pack 2 (Completely up to date with Windows Update-3/16/2011).- Intel Celeron processor 2.66Ghz w/ 2Gb RAM.- Mainboard: Asus P5S800-VM- Graphics: ATI Radeon 9200 SeriesWhat I have tried so far...The Netflix tile not appearing in Windows Media Center is actually a common problem, according to this Microsoft Support page (In which I tried all of the possible options it listed to fix, all unsuccessful)I have also attempted everything listed here in a Microsoft Support forum.Note: This is only for Netflix in Windows Media Center, I am able to watch Netflix using a web browser just fine, so I know Silverlight is working right.......After waiting a few days, numerous reboots, and attempts at the above I am at wits end with this... Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance!--Chris

@ hamluis:

I considered placing this topic in the Audio Video forum, however according to Microsoft(the first link in my post) this is a known problem with Windows Vista ONLY. So I found it necessary to add the topic to the Windows Vista forum.
Anyway, thanks for the correction.

Issue affecting netflix with the windows 10 app, Internet Explorer and microsoft edge which are the only ways to get 1080p on netflix i have audio but no video on external dell display but i can see the video controls such as pause play stop. If i disable the intel gpu in the device manager i get video but then i have to re-enable the laptop display after every reboot. The problem is caused by nvidia optimus and there there really should be a bios option to disable it not just for windows but for linux as well atleast for those of us who are not concerned with battery life. I am always plugged in even when i am at a friends place as it's the only way to game. So far microsoft support forums and chat have been completely useless. If i drag the netflix window over to the laptop screen the video comes back. Searching google i see lots of other users with the same issue but no solutions so i don't expect much luck here. I will most likely have to cancel my netflix subscription until i can get a macbook pro.

I discovered today 10/1/2015 that after updating the Netflix app via the Windows Store the Stream Manager function now crashed the app. When viewing a Netflix video, and opening the Steam Manager (Shift+Ctrl+Alt+S), when you attempt to set a manual stream rate of any value the app immediately crashes. I reported this to Netflix and they have confirmed the issue. It is a bug in the latest Netflix app update. Note that the browser Stream Manager does not crash, but the browser does not provide the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound that the app does. So recommend not updating the app since it is buggy.

And of course Netflix only says "check for an update to the app to get a fix." Typical.

I've got another PC problem. I am running Win7 Utlimate 32bit on my Shuttle xPC. The specs are below:

Shuttle XPC Barebone

2GB DDR2 Ram
Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT Video Card (has an S-video port so I can plug it into the TV)
500GB Seagate HDD
AMD Athlon 64 X2

Originally, I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on the computer, but I kept getting BSOD's/random restarts when trying to watch Netflix. I diagnosed the BSOD's and found that they were caused by my TV tuner driver. When I removed the driver, I didn't get another BSOD, but the random restarts continued. Since the drivers are mainly for 32bit systems, I decided to reinstall Windows 32bit to see if that would fix the issue. Alas, no. The TV tuner driver works and I don't get any blue screens, but when I try to watch Netflix, the computer still restarts randomly. I checked event viewer for anything, but no errors were present or none were related to the crash. The issue seems to only happen with Netflix, because I tried watching videos from other websites for hours and nothing happened.

The restarts are erratic. Sometimes they happen only minutes into watching or something. Sometimes it takes a few hours.

No mini dump files are made after the PC restarts. It just goes black and boots through the POST again.

Side note, I don't know why, but there's something wrong with the boot animation on the computer. For some reason, when windows 7 is booting up, the vista loading bar is there instead of the win7 glowing logo. ... Read more

A:Windows 7 Restarts Randomly When Using Netflix

It may still be a driver issue. If you are willing to try to create some minidump files for me to debug you can use this method
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
(Please read all instructions for driver verifier before using as it's possible it will make the machine behave badly and you need to know how to undo it.)

Or you could look there now, if there is anything in c:\windows\minidump please zip and upload them.

Hi everyone,

I installed Windows 7 64-bit on my old computer and hooked it up to my TV to use as a media center PC. Everything has been going great (drivers, wireless, etc.), except whenever I try to watch Netflix Watch Instantly content (the main purpose of having the computer), after about 10-20 minutes, the computer BSOD's. I've tried monitoring temps with SpeedFan, running MemTest, running hard disk checks, reinstalling some drivers, and using different browsers, but none of that has helped.

I uploaded the many many crash report Minidump files here:

https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx...5A2BC6EA21!103

Would someone who knows how to do analyze them mind taking a bit of time to try to diagnose the problem? I really like Windows 7, but if I can't get it to run stable for Netflix W.I., the computer would be rendered essentially useless, and I'd have to try installing Ubuntu or some other linuxy OS, which I really don't want to do...

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

-Matt

PS - I know there are a couple of other diagnostics that are suggested in the 'forum rules', and I will try to run them ASAP when I have access to the computer. Thanks!

iI searched first on install problems with Netflix on Windows 10, but all the threads were old and I was told (suggested) to open a new thread.

I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 900 recently and have been enjoying it. Still getting to get over the hump learning Windows 10.
I have two Windows 7 machines which I am comfortable with, but still honestly, being a programmer, I still LOVED Windows XP.

When I try to install the Netflix APP ( got the latest from Windows App site ) , the first popup asks me for my Windows email account (I do not have one, I use Outlook2007,gmail,yahoo) But even so, there are no options on that pop up except to close. Then the Netflix app install windows says working ...... .... .... ... That goes on and on. I have left it like that over night and it still never does the install.

Is there any trick to installing the Netflix app on Windows 10? Right now the only way I can use Netflix is to bring up my browser and starting it that way

A:Installing Netflix on a Lenovo Yoga 900 with Windows 10

How about install Netflix online ?

Open your browser, search for Netflix > enter your email address and password etc etc.

That was what I did..... install Netflix on line instead of Windows Store.

Since upping to Windows 8, can't log into Netflix account in Firefox, IE, Chrome, or Opera. Get totally red screen. Add-on bar (in FF, for example) shows connection activity and then "Done." Checked firewall, HOSTS file, and AV for blocked sites, but this one apparently not blocked. Everything works in Windows 7.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

Thanks,
Steve
