Q: Satellite Pro U400 BIOS update failed - What is BIOS Boot-block access

My last BIOS update has failed and now my laptop Satellite PrU400 PSU45E is out of order.
I want to use the Crisis Recovery Disk with an USB floppy drive but I don't know the key combination to run the boot-block.
Is anybody can help me?

Best regards

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro U400 (PSU41E) running Windows 7 x64 and I have been trying to update the BIOS to version 4.70 for 4.00.

Every time I try to do so from Windows using WinPhlash that is bundled with the download from the Toshiba site it seems to freeze when trying to flash the new BIOS.
I have logged in as the local administrator, tried using other flash programs and even tried doing so from a USB flash disk with no luck.

Can someone please help me and explain how I can update the BIOS?

A:How to update BIOS on Satellite Pro U400?

Sounds like you need the Toshiba Value Added Package installed (specifically for U400 and Win7 64bit), or your Antivirus Software is blocking the update.

You can find the updated Win7 drivers here:

Hi everyone,

I have a SATELLITE U400-10O (PSU40E-00R00EG3). It's an older product, but once which I still love an use regularly.

Recently, I have purchased a battery upgrade for this device. Unfortunately, the Laptop won't recognize it. The battery works, but I don't get any information on the charging level. I have tried various 'resetting' tricks (deleting Microsoft ACPI from the installed drivers list, running down the battery completely etc.).

I believe the BIOS could be outdated and I would like to update it. Unfortunately, the Toshiba Support website does not list any updates for it anymore. Does anyone still have access to the BIOS updates for this?

The BIOS is a Phoenix currently at version 4.70.

A:BIOS Update for Satellite U400-10O Required

N my opinion BIOS has nothing to do with it. Battery can be replaced and if you use compatible batteries they should be recognized properly. Here is the list of all compatible batteries:

Have you bought one of them and original Toshiba product (Toshiba label) or some no-name product?

Hello everyone!

I update the BIOS on my laptop and something went wrong, not now turn a laptop screen.

I went to see the web for Chris Bios recover.
Have available more than 20 versions, but so far no success.

My biggest problem is - I can not save to floppy disk 2 MB BIOS. All attempts to make a boot
flash or SD ended in failure.

The laptop is: Satellite pro U400 PSU45E

Please help me ... the laptop reads the floppy in BIOS with little experience (those that come with Chris Bios 500 KB - 1000 KB) begins with a normal boot beep signals supposedly provided a definition blocks then baar both short beep and do nothing ..
there must be something ... DOS BIOS small size, USB emulator .. BIOS to be torn down so it is possible charging of USB, SD ...

Every idea can be useful!

Unfortunately? if something went wrong during the BIOS update, then you will not be able to solve this without an help from an ASP technician?

In worst case the mobo is damage but maybe it?s not damaged?

However?. You have to get in contact with an local ASP and should ask for further handling!

Hi All,

I've had my BIOS update from toshiba website, when i used it to update my laptop it crashed and now my computer is no longer working, tried authorised service provided but they were unable to fix it!, and said i have to change my motherboard which is almost more expensive than my laptop itself, i'm sure you understand now that i don't have warranty anymore

What i need your support about is the following:

Can someone provide me with .ROM BIOS files for this model?

If not does anyone have any information of how to fix it?

If this is not available either can someone provide me with the model of this particular motherboard so i can order a new one?

I tried to update my Bios via the Windows tool. It started all fine, until it rebooted in Bios and the Progress was stuck at 1%. I let it run for many hours without any progress and finally pulled the plug. After starting the PC agin, I get No 2 beeps and then a long pause repeatedly. The keyboard is not active and I cant do anything except Boot-Block Recovery. WHen I do Boot-Block Recovery, I get video and the recovery completes successfully everytime, but after the reboot the problem remains. I still get the 2 beeps and no video. I tried the recovery with 3 diffreet Bios versions, the current one from December 2018 , the one from July 2018 and the original Bios which was from 2016.  I tried both with boot cd and boot USB, the result is always the same. I proceeded exactly as described in the HMM, I also did reset the cmos, and removed and installed all connected devices. I also tried removing RAM, but nothing helps. Is my Lenovo dead? How can a premium PC brick like that with a bios update?

Im working on a Toshiba Laptop A105-4284, Model #: PSAA8U-0FH02K that froze while trying to flash the BIOS, so I didnt know what else to do but shut it off. Now, when I try to boot it up, it gets stuck in the same place it did during the flashing; on the Toshiba splash screen with the status bar at the bottom showing about 20% complete. I cant get into the BIOS and cant boot into Windows. Other options available on this screen are Press F2 for System Settings and F12 for Boot Menu. Pressing F2 results in a beep and the status bar changing to "Please Wait..." but nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. Pressing F12 doesnt do anything. Pressing ESC takes me to a screen that shows the typical system info -- Phoenix Technologies Version 6.00; Intel Calistoga CRB.T3A Reference BIOS; VERSION.MAK 1.53; (looks like its running POST and recognizes CPU, Cores, No TPM or TPM has a problem, and system RAM and stops there. What is my best course of action?:

- shorting out the CMOS battery (I've tried this on the solder pads marked C88, with no laptop battery, with and without the wi-fi, ram and hdd installed; Im either doing it wrong or its just not working )
- trying to reflash BIOS chip (I tried this; turned the laptop on and held down the 'c' key to boot from cd, but still got stuck at the same place)
- replacing the BIOS chip
- something else?

So I have no idea what caused this one minute it's fine I'm watching stuff on 4od next thing screen goes blank and won't come back on so I hold down power button to restart and a black "windows boot manager" screen appears and I basically can't get off this page...
It says:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windowsinstallation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair yourconputer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000034
Info: the windows boot configuration data file is missing required information.

I don't have installation or recovery discs, I used another computer to burn an ISO recovery disc put that in and nothing happened.
I would ring toshiba but I don't have any minutes left this month and I don't have access to another phone/landline

I'm really confused about what to do, every other time my laptop has messed up I've just done a hdd recovery and restored to factory settings by clicking f8 but that's not working this time

I can't afford a new laptop or to take it in to be repaired so if anyone knows what I can do please help!

Thank you,

I think it?s just an software (boot manager) problem.
Try to repair the OS using HDD recovery;
Press F8 why notebook powering up.
Then choose repair my computer and then choose HDD recovery.

If this is not possible, order the recovery disk from here:

Then you will be able to reinstall the OS using recovery disk

My sister asked me to update her laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16N; Part number PSC0ME-01S00SEN) from Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 8 (64-bit).
So I did.

Then I went to Toshiba's UK website to check if there were any drivers I needed to install for Windows 8. The only one was a BIOS update (to BIOS v1.70). I have no idea what the previous BIOS version number was.

So I run the update application within Windows 8. Phoenix Technologies WinPhlash starts and then halfway through the update, the whole thing freezes.

The trackpad wouldn't move the cursor or anything. I had no option but to unplug the laptop from the wall and remove the battery. The laptop is not under warranty.

Of course, now it won't turn on. It beeps once when I press the power button, but the system doesn't turn on. A couple of minutes later, it sounds one long beep then two short beeps. It then keeps repeating this "one long beep, two short beeps" sequence every couple of minutes.

I have Googled and read website after blog after forum post, but nothing works. The links to the software suggested on these websites/blogs/forums are usually dead, so I cannot try what they suggest.

The most common solution is the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Tool. I have managed to download v1.0.0.4 which is supposed to enable me to make a bootable USB key. The version of this tool that I have downloaded is meant to be for a Lenovo ThinkPad X200. I have the correct BIOS.rom for the Satelli... Read more

I know this is is quite old computer, but until now it was just enough good for my usage.
Anyway, after I have done a recovery of the Windows Vista OS that came with my computer, I got a notification from one of Toshiba tools that there is an updated BIOS available for my computer.
I've downloaded it and tried to perform an update. After the process had (probably) finished, the computer did not react to touchpad and keyboard. I was not sure if the update was really successful, especially because it looked like the computer was is frozen state. So I left it for next +/- 30 minutes but no change.
Then I decided to reset it as even the power button was not working. So I had to remove the battery and unplug the AC power.

... and the computer was (almost) dead then.

Now it is so that when I press the power button it seems to power up, but the screen remains blank, the fan is working and Windows is not booting. It just makes one short scratching noise from the DVD drive and this is all.

My question is, what is the recovery procedure in my situation ? I've tried to look for some potential help on the Internet and I found some forum posts or articles stating that there are some recovery procedures for different BIOSes, but what is the procedure for my BIOS ? The only thing that I found "working" was that if I press the power button holding Fn+Esc keys, the laptop powers on with flashing power button. But how to force BIOS recovery flashing procedure ?

Hi guys,

Yesterday I did a fresh install of Windows 7 64-Bit and updated the laptop. The BIOS update sadly froze the PC and I had to shut it down. As one would expect... the Laptop didnt start.

When I press the poweer button, the Powerbutton and the Satellite Nameplate lights up and I get one long beep followed by two short beeps + the screen remains black.

Could someone tell me the key combination I need to press in order to enter the recovery mode to reflash the BIOS?

Does anyone know if I need a floppy USB drive to reflash the BIOS or if flashing from a USB thumb drive is possible... I dont see how I could fit a 2,3 MB Bios file on a 1,44 MB floppy disc.

A:Satellite P300-212 (PSPCCE) - BIOS update failed

There is no BIOS recovery mode that you can enter by pressing a key combination. Therefore special BIOS recovery tools are necessary they are compatible to the notebook.

That means the ROM module where BIOS is stored can only be reflashed from an authorized service provider because the guys have special tools for this.

Please get in contact with the technicians, they will help to sort this out:

Hello Chris

You know very well that BIOS password is very important security feature so we cannot discuss about this in public forum. At least you cannot expect that we can discuss about it on Toshiba forum.

BIOS password is important for many notebook owners who want to protect their notebooks and saved data. This explanation here can be abused and every stolen notebook with BIOS protection can be ?unlocked?.

Toshiba service provider in your country can help you with this.

I have a old Tecra 9100 with years of good service, and this is my first problem, but is a great one, after a forced reboot the screen shows a BIOS block 1 damaged message. I have tried to repair the BIOS upgrading to the last version I have found, the 1.6 one, but its a Windows version (to upgrade from a running Toshiba computer I think) and when I try to run it in another computer to generate a FDD and upgrade BIOS, I cant, beacuse a Toshiba common modules message.

Its there any BIOS diskette image-archive I can dowload to perform the BIOS upgrade in the BIOS?

Even if the BIOS is not up to date, the notebook should work fine and should boot the Windows OS.

Did you try to check the HDD or to reinstall the Win XP?

Hi, i'm, trying to recover my M92p from a failed Bios Update and am doing a BOOT BLOCK recovery according to the instructions in the HMM. I noticed that the Bios flashing via Boot cd or USB works regardless wether the Jumper is at the default Position 1-2 or maintenance position  2-3. Is there supposed to be a difference between about how the Bios gets updated via Maintenance mode or via Bootable CD for a regular Bios update? In both cases regardless where the Jumper is, the Update looks the same for me. ALso is the "POST and BIOS update (flashupdate) disc" mentioned in the HMM on Page 267 the same as the Bootable Bios Update iso avialable here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_bios/9sj99cusa.iso Or is the  "POST and BIOS update (flashupdate) disc" a different boot cd? The Boot CD instructions mention that if the Bios is the sam or older than the current installed one, I will be asked wether to procede or not, instead the Falshing starts right away and my keyboard is always locked. Can it be that my pc always does the  BOOT BLOCK recovery no matter what jumper position I chose? What is the regular Bios Update via CD/USB process supposed to look like in contrast to a BOOT BLOCK recovery update?

Hello Lenovo Experts! Brand new L380 Yoga requested BIOS update after the first reboot. It seems it did not complete the procedure properly, possibly because it happened in midst of W10 update cycle. After seeing BIOS flashing messages during boot it turned off and that was the last of it. Now, when i power it up it only makes funky short beeps, that can be repeated with the Fn key. Lenovo diagnostics app is unable to decode them properly. Screen does not turn on. Only FnLock  and keyboard illumination seems to function. Besides that the laptop is reduced to a sad instrument capable of playing one not so catchy tune... As far as I know the BIOS package downloaded from the Toshiba US driver page contains the WinRAR 32-bit self-extracting ZIP file which includes both Windows-based and diskette based BIOS update installation options.

Did you try to update the BIOS using Win-based BIOS?

What OS do you use?

I updated the BIOS of my Satellite C50-B-14D (PSCMLE) to 5.10 (latest one, release early Sep. 2015).
The update was successful, and the laptop works as long as I don't install the wireless card drivers (Atheros AR9485).
If I try to install the driver (it does not matter which ones, those from Toshiba's website or those from the manufacturer's), the laptop freezes before the installer completes.
Installing the drivers from device manager makes the laptop freeze on when booting Windows (I tried 7, 8.1 and 10).
It freezes completely on the Windows logo screen, and I have to power it down.

Also, the wired network card is no longer detected (it does not show in device manager).
The same issue is described here (http://www.eightforums.com/general-s...ses-start.html) but no solution.

Any suggestion? Can the BIOS be downgraded? The BIOS update utility won't flash an older version.

A:Satellite C50B freezes on boot after BIOS update to 5.10

Hi Fabril,

I am also have the exact same issue since updating my BIOS to 5.10 with my Toshiba C50-B-14D PSC MLE

I have to boot windows in safe mode without networking to disable the Atheros AR9485 before restarting again in normal mode.
I now have to use an external WiFi adapter as my LAN port is now also missing!

Upset that the BIOS update has broken all my on board networking on the laptop.

I have tried updating the Atheros drivers to the latest version but as soon as the device is enabled again the system hangs and we are back to square one.

There is no fix I can find other than disabling the device and living without built in WiFi + LAN.

Hopefully Toshiba can fix this with a new BIOS update?

I tried to do a BIOS update on my DX1210 last night to version 1.5,
During the update there was a write failed error message and now the system won't boot.
Is there a way to reflash the bios when a bios update fails?
I've got all the bios files extracted on to a USB key but I'm not sure what to do to initate a bios recovery?

A:Qosmio DX1210 wont boot - Bios update failed

Well, BIOS problems can be solved only by an Toshiba authorized service partner.
I assume the ROM module where the BIOS is stored, has not been flashed properly.
The Rom module can be flashed again using an special crisis disk.

Therefore I see just one real option for you: get in contact with the service guy to get it fixed.

Hi everyone. Please help out here. I have an HP Pavilion G6-1d40ca. It crashed the other day while I was using it, and when I restarted it, it went to BIOS update. It froze while updating, and died in itself (I think the battery died, it wasn't plugged in. I never knew about BIOS update, so I wasn't expecting for the battery to die during the update, so I didn't plug it in.) Second time, booted it up (it was plugged in this time), and went into BIOS update once again. All's good, was able to use the laptop for about five minutes, then it crashed once again. Now, when I boot it up, nothing comes up on the screen. No nothing. The power button is on, the wi-fi is on, the LED light is blinking non-stop, more than 6 times than what is referred to the HP website.

I tried doing the remove battery and adapter, press power button for 30 seconds, plug it in without the battery, but to no avail. I also did the whole win+B, but doesn't work either. I tried pressing f11, but nothing comes up on the screen. I don't remember where I put the recovery discs that came with the laptop. I thought I put it on the box together with recovery discs for our other computers at home, but I guess I didn't. The thing is, I don't know where to begin, since I don't have anything on the screen itself. Not even a start-up logo or something.

I only had this laptop for about 3 months, and looking at the other threads, it might be a hard drive failure problem. I could return it to HP, but was just wonderi... Read more

A:Failed BIOS update,HP pavilionG6 won't boot up and only black screen

Did you run a BIOS update, because it wouldn't restart into one. What exactly did the screen say that made you think it was a BIOS update being done without running it yourself (unheard of).

What LED light is blinking nonstop?

Can you boot into HP Factory Recovery: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

You can try these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot which will tell you if you can boot a disk to do repairs. If so besides links to the Win7 installer to use for repairs, there are also links to HD and RAM bootable CD tests to check your hardware.

But if this cannot get traction quickly what I would do with such a new rig is call HP Tech Support and have them walk you through steps to determine if it should be returned or if there is a known issue.

I really appreciate the good design of Dell Inspiration 7353 laptop, it's good, mostly indeed.
Recently I have a problem to use legacy boot (USB, DVD/CD, Internal HD, whatever), after I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest one (Inspiron_3153_3158_7353_7359_7568_1.13.0). Due to legacy boot is required in my daily work, so I will ask for help, see if anyone can give me a solution.
When I used the laptop without any BIOS upgrade, it can boot from any legacy driver (USB, etc) with Windows 7, 8+ etc.
Then it had a small USB issue, I thought I should try to upgrade BIOS, see if this can help, then soon I started to regret, because I had found that all legacy boot is failed, the Windows 8.1 throw me into a BSOD, tell me PAGE FAULT error. I have tried USB, internal HD & DVD, all same.
Then I googled, saw someone had similar problem (not same), he cleared CMOS by pull out the battery, so I tried it without any hope, but surprisingly, when I pull out the battery and remove the connection of power adapter and laptop battery, by pressing the power button several time with & without power cord connected, then I installed the CMOS battery, laptop battery, restart the laptop.
When I press F12 to load the boot menu, it really can load legacy bootable device, but that's one time thing. After the system reboot, the problem back again, looks like if I want to boot into legacy bootable device, I will have to remove CMOS battery each time like above all...sad.

The same issue from BIOS 1.2.5 is happening with BIOS 1.2.6. After the update, the boot screen remain totally black (no Dell logo) and you cant enter in the BIOS interface (no video at all).
The workaround is to downgrade to BIOS version 1.2.3
The windows boots as usual, and maybe this is the reason that users havent noticed this issue.
The bios upgrade/downgrade is automated. No mouse clicks are needed. Just wait computer to boot and wait some minutes. After this (blind) downgrade (because there is no video), you will see the dell logo once again and everything works as usual.

After just fixing a laptop from my neightbour, all of a sudden my own pc isn't working at all.

There was a big(?) Windows 7 update and I clicked on rebooting. The pc never booted. The screen was staying black, led monitor was orange, nothing. No startup beebs, nothing.
Fans are working though, MB led is green.

I manually restarted the pc several times but I can't even access Bios. NumLock key on the keyboard isn't responding either! I guess a corrupted BIOS?

My system:
Asus P7H55-M/USB3
iCore 3 1156 530
6GB DDR Memory
Crucial SSD M500 240GB
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Geforce EN210

Any help is appreciated!

Hello Mates,

My Asus G75VW was offline for 2 weeks and when it came back on there were 8 Windows updates to be done. Picked some of them>restart. There was this typical ~configuring~ message that went for 20 min or so. I thought it's frozen so I rebooted it manually. And than... nothing. Black screen. I can't access BIOS, Windows wont start either.

I tried generic reset with holding the power button but it failed.
I tried to boot from repair disk- nothing.

Any ideas?

A:Won't boot and access BIOS after crashed Windows 7 Update

Sounds like the laptops bios is corrupt. You could try and remove the battery and then push the power button for 30 seconds, then replace the battery and try to power up again

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... So I tried updating the BIOS on my Lenovo M92p desktop using Lenovo System Update program. Unfortunately, it didnt work and i ended up with a blank screen. I waited for about 10 minutes and still nothing happened. I decided to hold the power button and had it shut off. After multiple power ons, still no POST. I read the HMM and the section about BIOS boot block recovery. It said I needed to burn an iso file to a CD and also move the CMOS jumper to pins 2 & 3. Since I dont have a cd, I put the bios flash package on a usb drive instead, plugged it into pc, and also moved CMOS jumper to 2 & 3. Computer turns on and there are two beeps. No display. Does this mean I will have to get a CD?

What format was the USB drive?  Try using FAT32.  Failing that, yes, get a CD.

When this PC has sat in a releativly cool enviroment, it will boot up just fine. But let it get warmed up good, say having it on for 5-8 minutes and it will not boot up!

It gives the "Award Boot Block BIOS V1.0" and will not go any further.

The BIOS is "Award Modular" Version 6.00P

Do I have a chipset problem? Do I just need to update the BIOS?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
