Stumped! unable to open folder in XP - it flashes open then disappears

Q: Stumped! unable to open folder in XP - it flashes open then disappears

Hi Everyone,

I'm completely stuck and need help. My wife's notebook - compaq presario mobile athlon4 1.2GHz with 384mb ram running XP home SP1 has been melting down! She started running adobe photoshop 7.0 to edit some large images and it would just suddenly do one of two things 1)say it had an eror and couldn't save anything then just freeze 2)suddenly flash to a blue screen filled with white text and shut itself down. We sent a system error report to microsoft and it suggested a problem with the synaptics touch pad. I then spent about 2 days downloading all compaq updates and microsoft updates including XP service pack 1. However it continues to do the same things. If you go on the photoshop website it suggests thngs like disabling MMX extensions etc which I've don't to no avail.

Anyway I just thought this was a photoshop thing but now it seems to be affecting XP itself. When you just open the folder with the work and images that my wife has been working on the folder flashes open then the desktop icons and lower bar disappear leaving the background and then the icons and bar return with no report of error or anything. If you copy the folder to another disk drive you get the same thing when you open the folder. Also if you share the folder and open it across the network on another machine - in photoshop under windows 2000 it crashes photoshop. I have tried running chkdsk and defragmenting the drive but it still happens.

Does anyone know what might be going on - I'm completely stumped!!

Preferred Solution: Stumped! unable to open folder in XP - it flashes open then disappears

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Windows 7 64-bit on a single-user non-networked PC. I am the ONLY person using this PC. I have virus protection and firewall turned on and tested nightly.
My problem: I just downloaded a long list of audio files from the internet. I do this often without problem. But today when I went to Windows Explorer and to the Downloads files, the program just flashes repeatedly, but the folder never opened. Is it possible I've exceeded the capacity of WinExp as far as how much data it can hold? How do I tell? What do I do next? Is there some software I can use to get to my files somehow? Thank you.

A:Downloads folder flashes but won't open

Is it possible I've exceeded the capacity of WinExp as far as how much data it can hold?

I'm sure you have plenty of Free Hard Drive space/capacity. You can check by going to Start/(My) Computer this will show you a bar graph of the C: drives used and Free space on your HDD . If it is in the Red all the way to the right, then you are running out space.
It just sounds like the download did not complete and the files are corrupted. Try downloading again.

OS: Windows XP Pro
Windows Updated and all Patch installed

Starting today, when I open My Documents, within seconds, the document folder disappears and the bottom panel where it has the green start button, it disappears also for good 4 seconds.

Then the bottom panel reappears and the My Documents folder is closed. I try reopening and does the same thing. I checked for adwares and viruses but none to be found.
This is really puzzling me and very annoying.
Any solutions you may know? Thank you in advance.

Windows is crashing. Better put, explorer.exe is crashing. you can look in your logs and see what is happening. Right click My Computer and choose Manage. Then under Event Viewer/Applications, see what it is. Are you running a good up to date anti-virus program?

I wonder if someone can help me please,

I got windows 7 64 bit running, Since last two weeks I am having issues with desktop icon on my taskbar. Actually I have got this little screen icon on taskbar to easily minimise all the open windows when I click on the desktop icon on taskbar. But since last two weeks whenever I open any folder from (my computer > drive a> any folder from drive a) or any folder from any other drive or from desktop, my desktop icon from taskbar disappears. And when I close these open folders then this comes back. Its very announcing.
I want to see this icon on taskbar all the time as before.

Can you please help.

A:Desktop Icon on taskbar disappears when I open any folder

The only thing I can think of.

Right click on Start Orb and select Properties and then go to Taskbar at the top. Remove the check mark from Auto Hide Taskbar.

You could go to a restore point before all this happened.

Folders don't have file extensions. If the extension is is .mdb, then it is probably a Microsoft Access Database file. You will need MS Access to open it.

A:Unable to Open Folder

Hi Kegger22222

Is it OK now? I would expect that it might be fine after a reboot.

If you are having several problems since installing a recent program (or new gadget), you can try using System Restore to a restore point from before you installed your new software or hardware. You may need to reinstall your new purchases, but first check to see if an update for your program/device is available on the vendor's website.

Best of luck

Hi, I would be very grateful for any help.

Today I opened a site that had malware/risks to my computer, but Norton said that it prevented any harm. On the security history it says, "An intrustion attempt by ANNA-PC was blocked.", "consrv.dll (Backdoor.Trojan) detected by Auto-Protect", and "msimg32.dll (Packed.Generic.344) detected by Auto-Protect." It says everything was blocked, so I thought I wouldn't have any problems, but I can't open many applications anymore, like internet explorer.

It shifted something with my proxy for firefox, but I changed it to auto-detect and now it works. I don't know if this will help as I don't know if the proxy was on manual originally, but the HTTP Proxy was and the port was 64081.

For example, when I try to extract a file using WinRAR, a box pops up saying, "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe Application not found." Note: I can open the file with WinRAR and then extract to the documents, but I can't right click on the file and extract.

I can't open any .exe files because they aren't found, similar to the winRAR problem. But, for some reason, Mobipocket Reader and Adobe Digital Editions open without problem.

Again, I'd appreciate any help with this problem.

A:Unable to open applications in x86 folder

After looking through the forum, the problem may be due to the Win 7 Security virus 2012. I remember it popping up right before firefox started having problems, but it doesn't show up anymore after I changed the proxy.

Yesterday I encountered a weird situation. We all know the 256 character Windows limitation, and I always was able to override this issue by renaming the file or folder. This time I had this folder with more than 256 characters, and Windows was unable to open, rename or delete it, in all cases it displayed the "too long..." message. I was finally able to resolve the issue using Winrar to rar and then extract the folder's content and later with a 3rd party tool (XYplorer) which gave me the option to permanently delete it. I was wondering if there is any command or way to deal with this same situation using only Windows' tools. Thanks

Hi all, this is my first post. I'm not sure which category this fits in, so I'll post here first.

I just got a new Samsung RC420 laptop with Win7 Home Premium edition OS. When I was installing a software last night, a message pops up and tells me I cannot continue installation until I close a certain program (in this case it was Adobe Updater, which was not opened at all).

Today, I am trying to open "my briefcase" from a USB thumb, but a message pops up telling me I cannot open "my briefcase" as it appears a file in it is already open. But nothing else is open on my computer. It was my first time opening anything from the USB thumb.

Is this a common problem with win7? How can I rectify it? Please help.

A:Cannot open folder or continue task because file or folder is open?

No this is not a common problem with Windows 7.

Looks like you need to use the program Unlocker. This program works for both x86 and x64 platforms.

Download and install the program. This will add an entry "Unlocker" to your right click context menu.

Whenever you face a problem mentioned above, on the target file right click and choose "Unlocker". This will show any program / process currently accessing the file. It also gives you an option to kill that program / process so that you can go ahead and do whatever you wish to accomplish.

Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

There are excellent free AntiVirus applications available today, so there's no reason to be unprotected.

I was thinking windows could be corrupted. I wanted to do a repair install, but since explorer.exe doesnt function, the autoplay feature never loads either. I have a bootable USB drive with windows 7. I dont know how to get to the set up file without opening a folder.

I was reading that the repair can't be done on safemode.

My email is rocketmail, managed by Yahoo! I have several folders where I store emails I want to keep. I can not get into the "College Admissions" folder where, of course, important info for my college-bound daughter is stored.

I have contacted Yahoo, rebooted and refreshed many times, Yahoo says if they unlock it, I'll lose everything in the folder. Is there no other solution?

I put two e-mails in the file last week - they were in boldface as unread. I tried to open folder to click the emails so they wouldn't appear as unread and that's when I discovered this problem. I couldn't get in.

I added another email to see if that might unlock something but it's stuck in there now, too.
I have about 15 other folders and they all open.
This is the message I get when I try to open this folder:

"There was a problem accessing your mailbox.
We recommend clicking the "Refresh" or "Reload" button on your browser's toolbar. If this doesn't correct the problem, re-login to your account. If the problem persists, click here to send us a report."

Hoping someone can help. Thank you!

Hi, I've never had this problem before or anything similar, I updated McAfee and scanned on advice from a few websites that it might be a virus, but no viruses or anything were found. My problem is that all of a sudden today, when I click on Start and double click on My Computer, it will not open. I have also tried right clicking and saying open to no avail. If I hover over it and wait for the sub-folders to branch out and try to open those by double clicking or right clicking to open the explorer-type interface to see the files, etc it doesn't open. So if this is not a virus, I'm guessing it is a registry problem, so what can I do to get this so that I can open My Computer again? Is there some registry fix I can do? I tried resetting my computer to and it didn't do anything... any help would be vastly appreciated, thanks. i've found that i can access the my computer folder from desktop, but not from start...

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

I have a very frustrating issue with Windows 8 where my software disappears when I select to open an existing file from within the parent program. It is not minimized and it is not 'off' the screen. Before, I get the obvious response that it is an issue with the ISE gui and not Windows 8, I've had a similar problem in another program in Windows 8 in which when I tried to create a new folder in a select file dialog box to save a file, the program would disappear. I'd attempted to install XP Service Pack 3 via Windows Update. An error message occurred halfway through (can't remember the exact message at the moment) and the installation failed. The computer was fine after this and I continued to work on it until I shut it down.

The next day I booted up to find that all my desktop and quick launch shortcuts and desktop files had lost their icons. All shortcuts now have the extention .lnk. Nothing happens when I double click on any of files. This is also the case in the Start menu, where all program shortcuts don't work and neither does Settings -> Control Panel. I also cannot open any folders on my desktop, including My Computer.

I managed to open up the command prompt through Task Manager and I've been able to navigate to programs and execute them from there so I know the programs still work. This is the only way I've been able to get online and run programs to try to solve this. I can also open Windows Explorer via command prompt and navigate through folders that way.

Things I've tried:

1. I'd created a System Restore point before attempting the Service Pack installation. Ran System Restore through command prompt in the hope of restoring back to that point but there are no restore points available.
2. Ran an AVG scan. Found nothing untoward.
3. Ran HijackThis. Not an expert by any means on this but it didn't appear to show anything alarming.

A:One Web site will not open for me - stumped

Hello Kermit,

I just tried your problem site, without any hassles at all [albeit I am in Australia], so the problem must be with your computer.

If you have any stand alone firewall installed [ i.e: Zone Alarm etc.], it might pay to do two things; firstly, disable it and see if you can get into the site again..if this works, you will need to include the site on the exemptions list....and, secondly, disable any pop-up blockers.

If you only have the generic Windows Xp firewall, add the site to the exemptions list in there.

One other thought that comes to mind is, go into Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings, and make sure the box 'Automatically detect settings' is ticked > OK and restart IE.

Try these ideas and post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Dave T.

Ok. I'm on XP, am using a network connection to the internet, with either Cable or DSL (I can't remember), My compy is a Laptop (Gateway), and the only things that I download are from OverClockedRemix, a videogame music site. (for the record, it's cool)

Whenever I hit Save, or Open, on both Paint and IE, the save/open box will close, as well as the program, after the computer stops making the 'thinking noises' (the HD and stuff) . IE: I open Paint. I want to load in a picture, so I hit open. When it opens, and the computer stops making it's 'thinking' noises, it closes Paint.

Thank you in advance, and I hope I can get it fixed. It's really annoying.
Edit: It's now doing the close on the My Pictures folder. This is beginning to suck.

A:Whenever I open the Save/Open folder, it closes O_o

run Lavasoft Adware, Spybot S&D and CWShredder. Reboot and run HighJackThis and post a log here.

Not sure what happened, but starting this afternoon, Explorer 9 (released version via automatic update) will not open a link in a new tab, nor will it open that line into a new explorer window.

Looked at multiple complaints and fixes for this, none worked (including the scripts).

What happened today: recent automatic windows 7 update to "allow further updates", I used firefox for the first time - note did not set it as the default, there was a java update and an adobe update.

This machine is windows 7 sp1, completely updated 64bit home premium system.

Turned off all the add ons, restarted - didn't fix it. Tried the script for the same problem, that didn't work. All the resetting has done, is removed the tool bars I like to use and it still doesn't work.

Would like to leave explorer 9 as the default, but this is driving me nuts. (already can't use it for some sites due to the way their developers coded page popups - use safari for those)

A:Unable to open link in new tab and won;t open new window

the new tab is blank, and it just flat out will not open a new window.

If I right mouse copy the short cut and paste it in, it works fine

If you have Spybot.

Unblocking Internet Options In Spybot Search & Destroy

If Spybot is blocking Internet Options, you'll need to temporarily turn off Spybot's protection against abuse of the the "Internet Options" control panel. Just follow these steps:
1. Click on the "Start" menu

2. Click on "All Programs"

3. Click on the "Spybot - Search & Destroy" program group

4. Click on the "Spybot - Search & Destroy" program

5. When the main Spybot window appears, click the "Immunize" button in the toolbar at left

6. At the bottom of the window, you may see checkboxes named "lock IE start page setting against user changes" and "lock IE control panel against opening from within IE." If they are checked, uncheck them. This will enable you to use Internet Options.

I?m on 2nd computer this week, another brother?s.. again. (I so hate owing them money, LOL)

Older computer: 350Mz, 256 RAM, 7.5 hard drive. Had 95 upgraded to 98. Fdisk with a 98 startup (yes it ask for CD support and I say yes and it recognizes it.) then formatted. Problem when I push the wondrous button for the door to open to put the 98 CD in, the pretty little green light flashed and that?s it? doesn?t open! aaaaaaa Using a paper click in the emergency opening in the front does nothing?. isn?t that what it?s for?

The thing worked last week. (I did remove it to put another one in but had to put it back. I checked the jumpers and it is correct.) What?s up, it?s like it thinks about it but then just doesn?t? :knock:

A:CD ROM drive door will not open even though light flashes..

Have you damage the front? It may have gotten jammed. My nephew hit mine with a spoon and it was stuck, so i lightly pried it open. If the cd drive is nothing specail you should try it.

There have been no changes to hardware or software since updating to Windows 10 last year. This problem occurs each time I open the laptop from sleep or when I turn on tower.

I've just noticed that whenever i put a CD into my computer, it doesn't load it up, and it won't let me load it up manually through "my computer". It's just flashing continually and won't let me open it, not even by pressing the "Eject button" under my computer. I have to shut down the computer and open it right before the computer starts. Any thoughts?

Thank you again.

I have a major problem which is just driving me nuts. Whenever i try to either Open a file or save a file, the dialogue box doesnt come up. Same thing happens if i want to upload a file to my email or to facebook. Ive tried to run sfc/scannow in CMD as an admin and that didnt fix it. Ive also tried using the Startup Repair with a Windows disc and still no result. If you know someone who might have knowledge with this problem, then tell em to either contact me or give me their name.
Thank you alot

A:Open/Save as doesnt work. Window flashes then nothing happens.

You might give "FileBox Extender" a try

FileBox enhances Windows by adding several advanced functions to the standard Open File and Save File dialog boxes. (Note that if a program uses its own "private" dialog boxes for these functions, you won't see our FileBox buttons, sorry.)

My screen sort of "flashes" and stops my typing and everything freezes for a half a sec. This is quite annoying. It happens every 5- 15 secs when outlook is open.

Here is a little background on the issue.

So my external HD was getting full and it had all of these old backups on it, I went to delete some and then outlook was not working properly. I 1st wasn't able to even open outlook, but then it prompted me to select some files (I really don't know what I did here) and then it opened. When it opened all of my sub folders were gone and all of my emails that are older than 2 weeks are gone as well.

I thought that the external HD was just for backups, I had no idea that it was used for outlook as well. The files that were deleted were labeled "Back up set" so I thought that it was just an old back up. The file was around 45 gb, there were 2 other back up sets that totaled about 300 gb, I thought that I would be safe deleting the smaller one and go from there but I was not.

I use file scavenger to recover the files, but I don't know what I am doing with these files. The files that I need are not all in 1 convient folder labeled "Back up Set".

I had tons of info that was lost and I was hoping that someone here would be able to help me get this back together. I would just hate to have just lost all of that info...
I tried opening outlook and went to file, then open, then selected one of the recovered pst files and it said ... Read more

A:Screen flashes and stops typing when outlook is open

First use the computer as little as possible until we get back your stuff
First try to recover with Shadow Explorer
if that does not work try with recuva

Everytime you use the compter it will make it more difficult to recover the documents.

I updated to Windows 8.1 last month. It was quite smooth until some issues started 2-4 days ago. I don't remember if I have done something that may cause this, but I'm quite sure that I didn't make any change to the system.

The problem is, even when I am not opening any applications, my fan suddenly blows very strong and makes loud noise. From the CoreTemp utility I notice that CPU usage is 100% and its temperature is much higher than normal.
Again, this happens even when I am not opening any applications, and have started the computer hours ago (so it's not starting up).

The most strange thing is that the problem is solved completely when I open task manager. The first thing I see after doing that is task manager itself is taking up ~60-70% CPU, but that number goes down very quickly, and the total CPU usage drops to normal. The temperature shown in CoreTemp drops also and the fan becomes quiet.

Another issue with my current computer is that when I open certain applications (for example, Google Chrome), the process of the application appears in task manager, but in the background. And the application does not show up until 10-20 minutes later.
And when I use Windows Media Player, every song is stucked for ~5 seconds before being played. And there're spikes in the sound.

Please tell me if I should add any information. I'm new here so...
Thanks for your help :)

A:100% CPU that disappears when open task manager

Poor antivirus or actual malware are likely culprits. Run the tool in Brink's thread here, post results, and the forum members including myself will have the chance to see about it.

I'm just wondering how I fix it when I go to My Documents or Computer, and after a few seconds explorer.exe goes, sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn't. It gets really annoying adding the process back again on the task manager.

If there anyway I can make it so it stops doing this?

EDIT - Now when I right click and go Personalize, the screen stays for a few seconds then my screen goes totally black, and it also got rid of my desktop picture even when all the icons and taskbar comes back. This goes for when I go to documents, control panel, computer, etc. I thought I fixed it because it was good for about 10 minutes, then it got worse.

A:Explorer.exe disappears when I open documents

Anyone help please? This is really frustrating.
