I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I had three USB devices to connect to two ports. I bought a Stratitec four port USB hub. Somewhere along the trek I must have removed the controller in Device Manager. When I rebooted, the system recognized new device and apparently installed software (drivers, etc.; but the USB ports on the computer are not recognized (I have no USB cables connected to computed now). In Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers, the next line has a !surrounded by yellow. I went to Radio Shack and looked on their computer (not like mine), but Device Mgr. was the same except on the 2nd line there was no dash and it said "interrupt Request 11" and then on the next line "Input/Output Range 2080-209F. I would just like to get the driver for the card (PCI to USB)installed. Any help greatly appreciated.
P.S. This is a Gigabyte Technology motherboard GA-BX2000+ with a Pentium III 550Mhz. Windows 98 2nd edition. The controller is on board.

I'm trying to make sure I'm completely rid of the Smart Engine virus on my Vista. #18 of instuctions says to delete C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS file and replace it. When I click on link, it won't download from bleepingcompter, and when trying to save it on C drive, it says: This file is set to read-only. Try again with a different file name. Well, here's a reference for how the default hosts file should look:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034The hosts file may actually be there:Start > Run > control folders and press enter.Under the View tab, make sure:Show hidden files, folders, and drives is selected,Hide extensions for known file types is cleared, andHide protected operating system files is cleared.Alternatively:Start menu > Run > cmd.execd %windir%\system32\drivers\etcdirLook for "hosts" in the output. It may be necessary to take control of the hosts file manually in order to be able to delete or edit it:Start > Run > cmd.execd %windir%\system32\drivers\etctakeown /f %windir%\system32\drivers\etctakeown /f hostscacls %windir%\system32\drivers\etc /p administrators:fcacls hosts /p administrators:fand at this point you should either be able to edit it back to its default values by dragging the hosts file onto an open notepad window (created with admin privileges), or:del hostsOnce it's deleted, you can try to create a new hosts file in notepad, but when you save it make sure you don't append an extension after the filename (just hosts, not hosts.txt)You may have difficulty saving the newly created hosts file directly into the /etc folder, so instead try to save the file onto your desktop and drag the file into the /etc folder.Be aware that it may prove exceptionally difficult to do anything to the hosts file if your syste... Every time I turn on my laptop and login, a message appears that says "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed

A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available"

Also, my laptop can't get HP updates anymore. It tells me that the Windows Update service is not running and I know it is. I haven't updated my computer in months because of this problem. I can't even go to this website: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate It always say connection has timed out. My internet is perfectly fine and I can go to any website in the world but that one.

About a week ago I had a virus, sorry but I don't remember which one it was (I think it was HDD) but I was able to get rid of it. After I did I started receiving the following windows message: 'Host Process for Windows Services has stopped working'. It appears the the svchost.exe file is what they're referring to. I've scanned the file for a virus but it appears to be clean. I don't necessarily have to be doing anything for it to happen either. I may have been working on the computer and the left it for some period of time idle and come back and the message is there. At times I get the dreaded blue screen too, all since the virus was removed. I did boot from the Vista installation disk and ran the program to check for problems but it came back clean. I just installed a pci card that allows me to use 4 additional usb ports externally, plus one internally. I think that it is called a usb host card or a controller card, I'm not sure what the proper terminology is. Anyways, I popped it in, started my computer, made sure that it went through the found new hardware wizard and everything, it said the hardware was installed and ready to use- but none of the usb devices i plug into it work. the computer doesn't acknowledge that they are there and there is no power being provided to devices such as my ipod that require a usb charge. Any idea what is going on? Thanks.

A:Usb Host Controller Card Not Working

Go to your device manager and check your usb controllers for one that is "enhanced". If it isn't there, update your driver. Did you get a disk with the pci card? You may need to disable your old ports until you install the 2.0 and then enable again.

I have a fairly new notebook running Vista Business and connected to a home network wirelessly. The notebook is in the room adjacent to the router and signal strength is "excellent"; it is configured to automatically log on the network on bootup.

Here is the problem:

Whever the notebook is booted, I always get an error message at the end of the sequence saying "Host Process has Stopped Working". I click to close the box and everything seems to work OK except there is no wireless connection. A red cross on the taskbar. I have to manually open that icon, and get a message that Windows can't find any network . If I go though the diagnose and repair process it tells me that the wireless network is turned off, I turn it on and it connects.

Not sure why. I suspect my son has played around with some of the settings in startup programmes but can't be sure. I wouldn't know what is supposed to be enabled or not.

It seems like user error on my part, but if anyone can assist in rectifying this I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks

Ive read the threat below about the same problem and I think that problem is caused by something different.

Right the only errors I can find in Event Viewer at the times when I get these messages are application errors:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549adc4, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bdc9, exception code 0xc000000d, fault offset 0x000bc57d, process id 0x7b4, application start time 0x01c7cf69ea1dd3cc

When host process stops working trying to run applications or installing things results in:
The pipe state is invalid.
The system is not accepting control messages at this time.

And when pressing ctrrl+alt+delete results in windows cannot open security options or something similar.

Thanks for any help.

I have a laptop and desktop both running windows vista sp1. I recently bought a Sony minidvd camcorder. It came with software that I downloaded to both computers with no problem. My problem started when I uploaded the videos from the camera to both computers. The videos uploaded fine and show up on both the Picture imaging software that came with the computer, and also in "My Video" file. When I go to the Sony software, I am able to play the videos with no problem. But when I go to "My Videos" file I'm having problems. As soon as I open the file with all of the videos, I get a boxes that pop up saying, "Windows Host Process (rundll32) has stopped working. It then asks to connect to the net for a solution. If I click on one of the mpeg videos, I get audio and no video. When I let it search for a solution, it shows its a problem with axis media control, but when I click on the solution it just goes to an Axis website and not really a solution. I need to get this fixed because I can't email these videos to anyone and that is the reason we bought a new camera.
Thanks for the help.

Recently I tried to update my Webroot Internet Security essentials. I was asked to uninstall the program and then the update would take place. Long story short, it never worked so I was able to finally take Webroot off my machine. I then tried to download Avast and got the message that the service host has stopped working. I rebooted and tried again to no avail. This seems to happen everytime I've tried to download something. I am currently trying the method of going into my task scheduler and disabling the RASclient or RASAgent(something like that) but i wondered if there was anything else I could try if this doesn't work. Right now, I'm downloading Avast antivirus and the download is moving but it seems to be moving much slower than normal. Could this be due to the disabling of the RASclient or RASagent that I mentioned earlier? Please help...it's driving me nuts!!!

Hi!

I am having problems with my Sony VAIO laptop computer with Windows Vista.

I have seen this problem described in some threads in forums, but none that are exactly as my problem.

Whenever i start it up, everything works as it should, for a couple of minutes.

Then the problems begin.

First i get an error message box saying that the "Host service stopped working." and that i will get notified when a solution is available.

After this error message, i can not install any new programs, i just get the message that the "Pipe state is invalid".

Also, after the error i am unable to launch most programs.

When i try to save files (for instance, an image in Paint Shop Pro) i have to wait for up to 2 minutes before i can save it, and during this freeze - Explorer is "not responding".

Then explorer usually comes around, and i can save files.

My poker program doesn't save my history to the hard drive after the error has occurred.

I don't know if this is related to some malware program named "CMDS" - since i had an error message about that a few months ago, but Spybot S&D took care of that malware.

Or so i thought, since i can still see that process running when i start msconfig...which i can only start before the "Host service" error occurs.

I have browsed many forums, and asked everyone i know - but to no avail.

I would be very grateful for any piece of advice as to how i might solve this issue so that my dea... Read more

You seem to be running ESET Smart Security and Symantec Norton together on your computer. Never install more than one antivirus on a computer.

Unless your ESET subscription has expired, I would uninstall Norton with the Norton Removal Tool.

I'm not an expert with the Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal/TDL4 detector 0.4.2 by Gmer, but it does mention a possible TDL4 rootkit infection.

Please click on Report and kindly ask to be moved to the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum. Be sure to provide the appropriate reports in that forum after reading THIS. From there, be patient. You should get an answer within the next 48 hours. Those guys are really busy!

For the past few weeks a message has popped up on my computer whenever I open the lid that says "Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify when a solution is available."

My internet connection also goes out whenever it comes up for 2-3 minutes, and the task bar and windows go to the original format the computer was in when I purchased it.

No problem reports show up, and I'd really like to figure out how I can make this message stop coming up.

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this as I cant find a solution online. A while ago I deleted a few programs that I thought I didnt need and this problem appeared - I keep getting flicked out of applications to find Internet Explorer has stopped working followed shortly after by Host Process has stopped working. Games seem less stable and I experience crashes from time to time although i never had a single crash in the last 3 years before this.

One of the programs I deleted was Microsoft Silverlight and also I think I deleted and re-installed NET frameworks. I cant quite remember exactly..... so is there a way to find out what I deleted that day? is it stored in a log somewhere?

I dont use Internet Explorer and this problem is even more annoying because of this.

Hello,

The problem you are having is due to a compatibility conflict with Vista.

So first you nee dto find out what program is causing the error.

Click on Start, then control panel, and then Administrative Tools or System Maintence depending if you are on classic view or not. Depending on your view you should see a link that says view event logs or double click it. From this list, you will see items marked with X's and warning messages. These items are the program problems. What ever program is on this list you should search for an update for that program and that should take care of it.

If not let me know.

I have two USB ports which recently stopped working.  They are both located on the left side of the notebook. There are two ports on the right side which are operational. The two non-working ports have power can I can use them for charging a device (phone, etc.). However, they do not recognize any USB device. No Errors are emitted but no devices show up either. Device manager reported a controller as having a problem. I unistalled the device (Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller) and then ran a scan for hardware changes. The scan did not detect the controller. I have a feeling this is a hardware failure of the motherboard but am hopeful there may be another solution. Device Manager also reports a problem with USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller  Thanks,John

I have seen a  number of posts diagnosing this issue, however, they seem specific for each user so I thought I should ask for help specifically for me. I get this message periodically (once every day or two), but there does not seems to be any problems associated with it.  I do have a couple issues that may or may not be part of it.  One is that I periodically lose network connection from my Ethernet connection. The computer icons in the task bar seem to be still showing communication but the Networking and Sharing page shows limited connection to the router and no connection to the internet.   My router is still working however since I can use WiFi on another device.  I end up having to restart the computer to get the connection back.  Another issue I have is this message in the Event Viewer:  "The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer MYNETN600 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{A07981E3-3A87-43F5-970A-BE5DBA13. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."  The latter issue is a real pain, the previous one - not so much.

I am running Vista Home Premium  32 bit with Service Pack 2 installed.

Thanks for your help

Folks,

I have been working on this on/off all weekend and I STILL cannot get my USB 2.0 ports to work again and they were all working fine for the past 10 months. All 8 USB ports stopped working in 2.0 mode last week. They work perfectly fine in 1.1 mode using the standard Host Controller (BIOS is set for 1.1+2.0) when I disable the enhanced host controller.

My drivers are apparently screwed and I have done mostly everything suggested in various web sites to revive them (they had to be overwritten!).

My mobo doesn't have any updated chipset drivers (nVidia) and I simply reloaded my XP drivers to no avail.

Outside of the obvious/common troubleshooting, any one have any thoughts on this issue? I believe an update killed my ports!

Thanks!

I have had occasional trouble with my hi-speed USB connection to an external hard drive - it is sometimes recognised as hi-speed, and sometimes not. It has now finally given up completely. When I go into the Device Manager, select the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, and go into Properties, I am told that the device cannot start (Code 10). When I have checked, I have been informed that my driver is up to date. I have sent the data to Microsoft for a possible solution, but have had no response. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.

Hi, been having a really annoying issue today involving one of those "Host process for Windows Services has stopped working and has closed" deals. Thus far I've tried alot of general fixes from complete scans including svc in command prompt and chkdsk at startup, even cleaning out old temp files. Nothing has worked. To compound my frustration, it seems to be linked with an inability to access Windows Update. It appears to have only started today, and what generally happens once it closes is Vista attempts to restart it over, and over again. I'm pretty much out of ideas. I'd really appreciate some help!

I have had this issue with flash player since May when they introduced Flash Player 10 (May Release) with the new settings Manager that can be accessed from your own control panel. However I have never been able to use because as soon as i click on it it crashes and causes an error host32.dll has stopped working. I have tried all the obvious Solutions, uninstall/reinstall/clear cache.

None of these have worked for me so I have kept digging and today I noticed that Clashplayer CPLApp that appears to control this new control panel settings manager has a weird location in properties relating to 'google chrome' On my other system XP: I dont have this issue it works perfectly and the location of the file is C:Windows\ system 32.
Google Chrome was loaded on the system when I got it, it has never been used by me and now saya no up-to-date files. So I havent changed anything there. Flashplayer worked fine until May and I have always used IE8 on both XP and vista. Vista makes me scratch my head until I have a bald patch!!
Where has this google location come from and what can I do about it.... all suggestions welcomed... Do I rename the location, delete it, uninstall chrome??????Thank you. If you need any specific information, please ask and I will Edit accordingly

I originally posted this on the Virus and Malware Forum suspecting that an AV product might be causing problems on two different computers. Thought I would appeal to a wider use base here to see if anyone has any idea what might be happening.
"On my older machine, which keeps chugging along with Vista with IE9 which can go no higher....
About every 30 to 40 minutes, it gives a "hiccup" and a message appears saying: "Application Host Service has stopped working." At the same time the icon for Panda Protection, my AV, briefly shows a red X which goes out after about 5-7 seconds. I press "Close" and thing's proceed normally until the next occurrance....these periodic interruptions can go on all day.
On the other computer, which runs Windows 7, I always have to manually start the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, and Defender seems quite reluctant to do so at times.  Once on, they stay on. I vaguely remember this began when I started to use Panda as my AV.
Haven't received any Windows Updates on the older computer since a year ago last August, and don't think it, Windows Defender, is even active, although I still scan with it. Needless to say I don't use it for any browsing where security is a must, but scans with my other security programs including MBAM and Hitman Pro show I haven't picked up any malware on it. And Panda never finds anything either.
Just wondered if Panda might be causing these glitches. Am leery ... Read more

Windows auto suggest that I receive the latest updates (which I don't think is the problem, my updates are very recent). However, when trying to use Windows Update I get error 80072efd, a connection issue from what I've read, and I suspect a culprit....seeing as my firewall has never caused any problems, and I even disabled it to test this. Also I have several copies of svchost.exe in my task manager, which I find suspicious. So I keep getting this problem where Windows Host Process stops working, followed very quickly by windows audio service.

Exact Message: Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

I have a Dell Studio 1440 running Windows Vista 64 bit.

For the past couple months I've been having this problem with popping sounds from my audio, usually when I'm playing games or watching things, though sometimes just randomly. This was occasionally followed by the host process stopping working, now it happens more often. It also happens whenever I access some games such as Warcraft III Frozen Throne.

A:host process stopped working and has closed

Hi there

We're going to need to find out more about what's causing this error. To do so, you're going to have to go into the Event Log and mark down any errors you see marked with a red X. Since the same error can occur over and over again, you don't have to write every time down. Just note what kinds of errors you see and come back to let us know.

Follow the instructions HERE to learn more about how to do this.

You said you restored. By that do you mean that you reinstalled IE7 by deleting IE8 first? or did you do a system Restore using Window's System tool ?

Why didn't you like IE8 ? It works just fine on Vista as long as you have SP1 installed. Reinstalling it will probably fix your problem.

If anything, all the new fixes Microsoft adds to every version of their browser are essential in keeping your computer secure, so you'll want to eventually have the newest version anyway.

Also, have you considered using a different browser? Maybe Firefox or Opera ?
