Windows starts up but wont finish..

Q: Windows starts up but wont finish..

I just repaired my computer that was shocked and fried in an electric storm 2 months ago, And now its been 3 days and whenever I start it up it goes to the windows logo and shows it loading but right before it goes into the account select screen it just stops loading! I've tried everything, safe mode, start it last time it worked, start it normally, and I even repaired all my files.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Windows starts up but wont finish..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows starts up but wont finish..

Well the obvious answer is that the computer is not "repaired".

What fried and what did you do about it ?

Can you get to safe mode ?

Do you have an XP disk to run chkdsk, fixboot & fixmbr ?

Hi. I'd be really grateful for some help! Since 22/6 my pc hasn't booted into Windows (XP, SP3): the Windows startup window appears for about 30s, then screen goes dark & all hdd activity seems to stop. (But monitor stays on, without the expected No video signal message or whatever). CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing, so I have to press the reset button. I can boot into safe mode, but I don't have networking/online access even if I choose safe mode with networking. (Poss because I use a usb wifi adaptor?). Booting into last known good configuration doesn't have any effect, nor does System Restore (2 restore points tried). I don't remember anything untoward happening on 21/6. I've posted on the Virus & Malware forum, but I've been told that nothing looks suspicious. Any ideas please?

Hey there.
Im having some trouble trying to reinstall windows 7.
i have runned windows 7 with the pc for a year, and i tried to reinstall windows 7 and run into trouble.
I began with booting from the cd/dvd driver with the windows 7 installation disk inside.
I choose the advence install option, format the 2 hard disk i have, and choose to install windows on one of those disks.
The install proccess goes on, until the last step, in which the installation restarts the pc, and then i get only a black screen, which doesn't get anywhere.
I dont get to the part where im choosing my pc name and all, its just black screen.
When im restarting myself manually, i get the option to run windows in safe mod, when i choose normal i still only get the black screen, when i choose safe mod, it say's something about finishing the windows 7 installation, and then a message that it cant be done in safe mod.
All this situation is weird, because i have already run windows 7 on that pc, and still im stuck right now.
Would appreciate any help, thank

A:Windows 7 Wont finish the installation

I had this happen to me, turned out the GPU was switching to my plasma TV after it hed done the initial setup through the CRT. I never turned the plasma over to the pc input ot check as didn't think anything would be on there as WinXP would always default to the CRT and I just presumed Win7 would as well.

If you have other monitors or TV's attached, hunt for the screen image there, if not I am sorry that I can not help.

Just finished putting my first system together and windows wont install. I first tried Windows 10 and now 8.1 and both give the same error. I've made it all the way to 91% on the 8.1 install and i get this message "Windows cannot install the required files..... error code 0x80070003." The system also has these like half boots where the fans start up and the leds come on and it clicks off before it fires up completely.

Where did you get the installation DVD or flash drive. Are you sure they are good?

Couple things you can try.

Remove 1/2 the ram so there is only 4GB and see if the install completes. If not swap ram and try again. New defective ram is unusual but not unknown.

See if the 32 bit version of 8.1 will install. If yes then it's something specific to 64 bit.

How are you doing the install? Did you delete all partitions on the SSD then click Next and let the installer create the partitions it needs?

How is your BIOS/UEFI setup?

Hello everyone.

About two days ago, I went to sleep letting my computer finish an update to Windows Media Player 11. The next morning I found that my browsers no longer will finish loading any form of web page.

Yesterday I completed a virus scan to have found a trojan, but I'm no longer sure how much damage it could have caused, and I'm not even sure if the the trojan is the culprit. Here's all that I know:

- I'm running Windows XP Home, SP3
- Instant Messengers, like AIM, function properly.
- Firefox opens normally, begins to load the Google front page, and stops halfway through the communication process (IE just locks and crashes).
- Upon reboot, many of the programs checked on my startup list inside msconfig will not start up after all, among those being AIM, my wireless utility program, my anti-virus, and others.
- I've taken a look at my services but without knowing what was already on and already off, that was a dead end.
- my ex, and current roomate, had the same kind of behavior once, and the next day, the problem had went away. I don't think this is that simple.
- The two most current events have been installing, and thusly uninstalling WMP 11, and the fact that I cancelled my home phone line, who also was my past ISP, but I should have been on a completely different ISP.

I'm trying every option i can without having to install XP again. Once again, the behavior didn't begin until the computer had an automatic restart after installing WMP 11. Un... Read more

I have a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3TB external hard drive. I got it about.. 6 months ago and I've never had a problem with it up until last week.
I plugged it in and it started making a normal fan sound like is usually does, then after a few seconds it stopped which made it seem like it was shut off.
It's been doing this constantly since last week and I don't know what the problem is, or how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Seagate External Hard drive, starts up but doesn't finish.

Just a thought (or 2):
Try using a different USB port.
Try jiggling the USB in the socket (gently).
Try a different USB cable.
Be sure that you test with the laptop on power supply, not just battery.
Obviously I'm thinking that the connection is faulty somehow, which would disconnect and power down the external - even if it has it's own power supply.

Basically my keyboard works when it starts. I can press F8 or Esc to go into the windows startup menu. However when (even in safe mode) it starts up it asks for Ctrl+Alt+Del. Here my keyboard is non responsive. I've had this issue before and used to solve it with windows restore settings to a previous date through safe mode, however this time i can't get into safe mode because clever windows felt like making it so secure.
Also the option of going back to previously good settings after pressing F8 desnt help. I've tried all sorts of boot disks made on my other computer but nothing seems to get it to that BIOS screen. As i said the buttons work before windows starts up just i cant do anything useful with them. Oh and i dont have an XP Pro CD either... would that help? how do i restore mysetings to a previous date?

Now then with the Seagate in their as the master I can still use the deskstar to store data. however if i try to load XP on the deskstar alone it will get through the dos format and all the way till it restarts.

after it restarts it wont load the os all the cables are connected its been partitioned into 2 drives again (though i dont think that had anything to do with it) although i think its pointless cuz i do get the 1720 SMART error but i hope thats a false sign.

cuz when i have the seagate as the master im able to use it for just storing **** but Im just at my wits end and im thinkin of going "office space" on the hard drive plz i need help idk if its not compatible or what. any help would be appreciated.

Okay so I have a really nice custom machine. About 2 months ago I started having BSOD's. I eventually found an article about win debugger and figured out it was being caused by avast antiviurs. I then learned there was a bug with Avast not updating correctly with win 7. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the newest version. Then had no problems for a bit. Starting maybe two weeks ago I started getting random BSOD's again, but this time the dump log wont finish. It gets to about 40 percent or so then my computer just goes black then restarts. Im guessing it may be avast again, but Im really confused why I can't get a dump log to verify. So to sum it up 2 questions.

1. Is there anyway to make sure the dump log completes so I can go in with win debugger.

2. If there isnt is there anyway to see what is causing the dump without the dump log.

Ill also add a third, whats a good antivirus out there now a days besides avast. I used to have avg but it started to get bad reviews.

When the process got to the “39 Minutes to complete” screen a box came up asking for file “asms”. There was also a reference to ”GLOBAL ROOT\DEVICE\CDROMO\I386” as a source, which did nothing when clicked.
I put a copy of “asms” on a floppy and when I clicked OK in the box it read from the floppy but after proceeding slightly a box came up asking for file “NT5INF.CAT.

I started to update my AVG free 7.5 update manager the other day when for some reason it froze. I closed it and tried again and it says its downloaded what it needs but to finish the update i need to restart my computer. After I had finished doing what i was doing i restarted my computer.

Heres the problem. Its still saying that i need to restart my computer to finish the update. Its been a few days now and it still wont finish the update. Ive tried selecting it again and re-doing the update but just says "update was unsuccessful".

Any suggestions? It says the next update due is tomorrow so should i wait for that and try again? I've also noticed, while trying to fix the problem myself, that under the settings tab for update manager there is an option to "delete update temporary files". Would this work? Im not too sure what this option does.

A:Help! Click to DVD Wont finish dvd burning

Is the file to large for the DVD disk?

Are you using different brand disks? Often one brand disk will work with one burner but not with another of the same make and model.

It is also possible that the drive is bad , that the laser is misaligned and does not follow the track all the way to the end.

Okay, here is a broad general explanation which should answer your question, I hope.

When an optical disk (CD, DVD) is made commercially; an acrylic disk is covered with a layer of metallic foil and a mechanical press stamps this foil to make pits. which will reflect the read laser differently than the flat undisturbed surface. This foil layer is then covered with a protective surface (in some cases another acrylic layer in others merely a label). Damage to the lower acrylic layer can be polished out, but if the top layer is damaged and the foil marred, the disk is not repairable.

Now we come to Recordable optical disks CDR and DVDR either + or - (the difference I will cover later)
The lower acrylic disk has a spiral groove cut in it and an optically sensitive (changes color when exposed to the right frequency and power of light) dye is put in this groove and then covered with either reflective foil or a doped layer of acrylic to accomplish "total internal reflection" as is done in fiber optics, where the refraction caused by the medium change will completely reflect certain frequencies of light (but be transparent to others) . The burn laser burns this ... Read more

Hi, I have windows xp media center editon, with all appropriate updates. It froze up, got a blue screen, tried to restart and it stopped loading windows just when the cursor arrow should have shown up. I unplugged it (only way I could turn it off) tried to load win xp in safemode, all the different ways, all I got was a list of all these files and then it just froze with list of files. I do not have a win xp media edition cd as it was loaded on comuter when I go it. At this point all I want to do is get my files off there. right before this froze up, my email program downloaded an update. I do not know what diff file names mean or what there sequence means either. Is there an easy way for me to just get windows loaded so I can transfer my files. I don't have a hard copy of my back ups

A:xp media editon wont finish loading.

backup your files with an ubuntu live cd once your files are backed up, if you have an XP CD (anyone will do) Boot off of the XP CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

Hi,

I'm having a re-occuring problem with my PC
I am a video editor, so I move, download, upload, sideload A LOT of stuff on my computer.
I thought the problem was my old HD which I recently got replaced with a new 1 terrabyte HD, well the exact same problem is back and I'm really confused as to how I might be able to resolve this issue without completely overhauling and replacing my hard drive every few months.

The problem is that my system constantly slows down and crashes on me from time to time, (crashes around once a month), and then chkdisk pops up every time I start my computer and begins to scan it, I think it goes through 3 processes or stages which I'm not really sure as to what they do, but in the second stage it always just stops between 40% and 60% and will not continue, so I have to shut my computer down and skip the chkdisk because it seems to be useless.

I couldn't find any sites or sources that gave me the slightest idea as to why chkdisk always stalls and never completes checking the disk.

So I cannot defragment my computer and it's just getting slower and slower at a noticeably fast rate.

I don't want my computer to end up in the state it was in last time where it took minutes just to open a single word document.

I've even heard that defragmenting my computer isn't the way to go or that it wouldn't fix anything?

-Zac

A:Trying to defrag vista, says I have to run chkdisk which wont finish scanning my HD?

Hi, welcome to the forums sorry about the delay in replying. We don't know your system specs, adding a 1 tb hdd may not have been the best way to go, best to talk to your local computer shop about your requirements. Now it appears your drive is returning a "dirty" response hence chkdsk needs to be run. The three stage (read only) chkdsk is virtually useless so open a cmd prompt start, all programs, accessories, and right click on command prompt, select "run as administrator" at the prompt type:-

Code:
chkdsk /r press enter
You will receive a prompt about the volume being in use and would you like to run it next boot Y\N press Y and type exit then reboot.

Chkdsk will run, on a 1tb hdd can take up to 2 days (yes or longer) so be patient.

When complete download My Defrag (best free one by far);

http://www.mydefrag.com/

Select the optimize monthly option and allow it to run. Let us know how you get on.

Hello all, I'm starting run out of options on what is wrong with my desktop computer.

It has now done it three times, win7 slows down to a crawl, even opening the start menu takes half a minute.

First time I fixed it with reinstalling windows and it worked for a few weeks, then did it again. Then I fixed it by doing a system restore. Now its done it the third time, and system restore won't finish, but gives an error on all restore points. I think it was 0x80070017. It was giving me a similar error on my my previous successful attempt as well but I found one restore point that worked.

Machine is HP desktop, Win7 64bit. Windows runs normally in safe mode.

Done so far

- Ran malwarebytes, it found nothing, scan took 13 hours when it usually takes 4
- Avast found nothing
- Ran ccleaner, did't fix the issue
- Uninstalled my printer drivers since it was the only thing installed when the problem started, which took 4 hours to finish
- Currently running ckdsk, so far it's found multiple damaged files in my desktop folders.

Any idea what could it be? The computer is a year old, could the hard drive be going sour already?

A:System restore wont finish, error 0x80070017

chkdsk stopped because of an unspecified error 6e74667363686b2e b34 at stage 4/5. It says disk space isn't sufficient for fixing the file 13921, named ... and just gives an empty space for the file name

There's at least 100gb of space on the hard drive

Ended with a blue screen saying "driver power state failure". chkdsk started again from the start after reboot. currently running, it hasn't found any damaged files yet.

Service Pack 2
AMD 706 MHz, 1.25 GB of RAM

Hi, after recently (finally) updating my XP pro from service pack 2 to service pack 3, things went bad... firefox suddenly wouldnt open at all, and Internet Explorer (8) would start to open, but then it's window would close all by itself a few seconds later. I ran Maleware Bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials in both regular and safe modes,(both programs were able to download updates, so the internet connection was there to some extent) and everything came up clean. after a few days, i gave in and did a system restore to a few weeks previous time (before i tried to upgrade to service pack 3). However, still no IE or Firefox. I then realized that i was able to use an old "AOL Explorer" browser, and used that to download Google Chrome. I then used Google Chrome to download a new version of Internet Explorer (8), and now i seem to have a working Internet Explorer again. (Firefox still doesnt work, but havent tried to re-download it yet)
My main concern now is that Microsoft Security Essentials wont complete a "Full Scan." (Malware Bytes will complete and finds nothing wrong). I even downloaded/installed a fresh version of Microsoft Security Essentials and it does the same thing... quick scan finishes and finds nothing, yet a full scan run for a few hours and then has an error message " cannot scan computer because service is not running. restart service manually or restart ... I have a USB 2.0 port in the front of my box (a pair of them actually). When I plug in a jump drive to move a movie from my hard drive to my DVD player (its old tech, I know) the file begins to copy and then, when it get nearly completely done it will stop. Sometimes it will complete in 2 or 3 minutes after that but other times it will never complete.

So, I transfer DivX movies from my computer, to my jump drive to play on my DVD player that will accept DivX formatted movies. Now I can see the show on my TV.
The jump drive sometimes does not complete the transfer for a few minutes and other times not at all.

I have not tried to write through that port so I don't know if it works the same with an upload. I do know that I can create an Acronis image with the port without any problems that I know of. Since an image takes a long time I might not be noticing the extra minutes at the end.

On a Dell Optiplex GX260 with a blank HDD when attempting
to install the OS the PC lost power after the OS installation
had gotten into the format stage. With power restored I
again started the PC to finish loading the OS. The PC
will not get past a message that basically states that
it cannot boot into Windows. Even insuring that the PC
will start with the CD drive, it will not go back into the
OS CD for anything.

This PC was just acquired from a PC recycle firm here
today. Had been checked to insure working unit, but
without an OS.

How can I start a format on this drive to again start
the OS install?

A:Solved: Dell PC lost power when loading OS now wont finish format.

Remove the drive and install it as a second drive in a working PC running any version of Windows.
Format your drive in Windows Explorer by right-clicking on it's drive letter and choosing Format.

When it's done, put the drive back into the Optiplex PC and the XP CD should boot okay to start the Windows Setup process over again.

Hello everyone, I am a big fan of these forums, but usually I have found the answer from another question. No one seems to share my problems this time so I joined up for this.

I recently was given my friends old computer as he got a new one and wanted to thank me after helping him and his family out just before Christmas.

Not long after I started it up it was clear much was wrong!

I downloaded some programs and found out I had the VitruMonde trojan. I came to these forums and found that VirtumondeBeGone and VundoFix can be used.

I used both programs along with SDFix, MegaBytes antiMalware and Spybot search and destroy.

The pop ups and advertising has stopped, however things have goten worse!

Now it seems whenever I run kasperskey (even in safe mode) I get a windows shutdown command, something about DOM being stopped. Its the same shutdown message that you get with a CMD > shutdown command with 60 seconds to stop it. I stopped this using shutdown -a

But this is not right. Something is wrong!

Also, a folder where I have a few AVI files is cuasing me problems. Explorer crashes and I get a DEP error!!! This happends everytime. Once again this didnt happen before the attack, is this a cache problem? ati properties handler maybe? But still this did not happen before.

I updated to the latest DivX but it still happends.

I have a program called Your Uninstaller 2008 on there. But that program can now not create system restore points on the machine. T... Read more

Hi, my PC got infected and my debit card details were stolen somehow. Anyway I ran Avira, Spybot S&D, CCleaner and all the usual cleaners etc, once in normal mode and twice in safemode. Avira found a few Trojans and got rid of them. Then I had an OLEPRO.dll error. I ran sfc /scannow, which took a while but did not fix. So I repaired XP by booting from XP CD, choosing to install XP, agree to the EULA, then repair an installation. This took about an hour and went back to the installation screen as though I were installing for the first time. When complete nothing was different. Except the OLEPRO.dll error had gone.So now most downloads will not complete, in any browser I have installed, they either stop after 1-2secs and tell me its complete or get to 60-80% and stop. Some downloads are fine though? I can't install any new browsers, I already have IE7, Firefox, Safari and Chrome but tried to try another browser just incase. I can't install any new anti virus or security software. If the download completes the install fails due to an error. If it installs the program itself does not work. Trend Micro RUBotted downloaded and installed but wehn I run it I get a window with a blank screen. Its a different error for each program. Trend Micro Housecall will not run in any browser. Avira will scan though comes up with nothing, same for Spybot and any other anti virus/anti spy... I have already installed.I have Comodo Firewall and I removed all firewall and defence rules to... Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.
