Can't upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Pro on Lenovo U310

Q: Can't upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Pro on Lenovo U310

I have a Lenovo U310 Touch that came from the store with Windows 8.1 on it. I need to install Hyper-V and that requires 8.1 Pro.

I have a product key from my MSDN subscription for 8.1 Pro and attempted to use the "Add Features" program from the system screen to upgrade. It takes the code, validates it as ok, goes through some downloading and other stuff then reboots the system. When it comes back up after the reboot it states "Couldn't add features" along with a contact Microsoft Support link.

I looked around and can't find a log file or any error codes that I could post here, if anyone knows where it is I'll be happy to post anything I find.

I tried contacting support, but the two different people I talked to just walked me through the same process to then punting to another person who ran me through the same and came to the conclusion "can't help you".

I've done this on 2 desktop machines to enable Hyper-V with no issues but for some reason this doesn't work on this "Ultrabook".

I've tried this on a hard network connection and on a wireless connection to see if anything changed. Still broke both ways.

The machine does have 2 drives in it, one 20GB SSD for recovery and recovery drivers and the primary drive. I've read where there may be files mapped on that drive that are causing problems, but have no clue how to actually find these and move them.

Any ideas?

- Jeremy

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My machine: Lenovo Ideapad U310  Model 4375  I would like to know if I could replace my 500 GB HDD with a Crucial MX500 500GB SATA 2.5-inch 7mm Internal SSD.I read that mine is SATA 3.0, but that one is SATA 6. Would that work? And could it handle that storage space amount? Thanks!

A:Lenovo U310 (not y520) i7 hdd upgrade.

Good day and welcome to the community. As I understand it, the SATA standard is backward-compatible. An SATA-6 storage device should work fine in an SATA-3 slot, albeit at the slower speed, as long as it physically fits.Regards.

Sorry for the vague title, but I can't spot any pattern as to what apps/timing is triggering it. It happens pretty frequently, sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes lasts a few hours. I've attached the logs as per the thread,

Hi there, this is the first time that I am writing such a guide/tutorial/whatever you may call it ? there are probably better ones, but though not being a total computer noob, it took me almost one week to get this pretty (now again) little beast running again. So hopefully this helps some others to avoid such stupid downtimes. A brief overview on what has happened to my original win 7 Home Premium:As some may know, this laptop is very well usable as a ?Hackintosh? called Macbook clone. So that?s what I did. It turned out to be nice, but I wanted to go back to Windows after a while, using a clean W7 Pro installation to start over. Actually an easy task, format all drives, install Windows, be happy. Just as I had been doing this for years. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real challenge. First, I couldn?t ?see? my drives during installation (and thus not install), then I got random errors during installation aborting it at different points and finally rapid start and caching didn?t work. Every time I tried to activate them (after Win installation), it crashed my PC. I even found an (official Lenovo!) guide stating to install W7 on the SSD, which worked, but sucks due to space limitations. Oh and another very nice thing: The SSD showed up during WIN installation (but not the classical hard drive) stating it was about 60 GB. So as you can see, I have had a lot of different tries and errors. Why I didn?t use Lenovo Easy Recover? As said before, I e... Read more

Hello!

I've been having trouble with my Lenovo Ideapad U310 (running Windows 8.1) for quite some time now. Generally, it occurs once I try to reawaken the laptop after having had it on Sleep mode - the laptop freezes and then eventually the blue screen of death appears. I've been reading around the subject ever since it began, and I've tried enabling a hybrid sleep but no luck! I've tried updating all drivers but Lenovo is, quite franky, a bit rubbish at this. The error makes it a real pain to use my laptop at university etc, so I'm hoping someone can interpret the attached dump files for me!! I've only attached the last two but if you think more are needed, please let me know, as well as any other system details! ]

Cheers xo

I bought this device 1 month ago, and several days after - the pc won't awake from sleep, getting into the "new" blue screen saying "driver_power_state_failure".

After restart, a msg came saying the Intel Rapid Start Technology wasn't enables.

1. I downloaded the IRST from Lenovo site, but once trying to install, I got a msg saying the my pc does not have the minimum requirements to be installed.
2. So I googled, and came up with something that says that that I need to enable AHCI in my Bios.
3. I went to the BIOS, and indeed the AHCI was enabled.
4. In the BIOS, also the Intel Rapid Start Technology was enabled.
5. However, its status was "INVALID".

Please, I have no idea where to go next. It seems my computer hates me...

Hi All, My Lenovo U310 Ideapad Has been Having speaker problems, The Headphones are working fine but the Inbuilt speakers that are Awefully situated inbetween the hinge and the base of the Screen aren't working. First i thought that this was a issue with the headphone jack assembly that might have cut off the internal speaker circuit due to improper removal of the headphone jack but thats not true because I noticed that Its an Issue with the angle I keep my Screen's tilt. On moving the screen to any angle above 90 or 100 degrees the speakers get cut of and are activated once its below 80 degrees. I am a bit worried any words on that????? regards, raisedadead. THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE!!!

Hello, I recently inherited a Lenovo Ideapad U310 Model 4375 and it currently has Ubuntu installed with no sign of any Windows partitions.Because of this, I can no longer make a recovery disc (if it was even possible to make in the first place). I've looked up the serial # on Microsoft's website for Windows and the windows product key is to be serviced by OEM (so can't download a Windows 7 ISO).Also, when trying to go through Lenovo's contact us page, the laptop shows warranty has been expired (whcih is fine). However. I could not find a page where I could purchase the recovery disc. Other things I've tried is pressing the Recovery button on the side and selecting "System Restore" from the boot menu. As expected, this does not work as the partition no longer exists. My questiopn is, where can I get a recovery disc to restore this laptop (Ideapad U310 Model 4375) to factory settings?   Thanks,Jon

hi dharamc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.

If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.

If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU

Let us know your findings
Cheers!

Hi guys,

troubles started only after the upgrade to Windows 10 and I frankly tried to ignore the 1-2 BSOD's per day as I'm working 10h+ and still with deadlines in tow.
Lately the BSOD's hit more often and from different reasons: Kernel Security Check Failure, IRQL not less or equal, Memory Management...
I already ran all kinds of hardware tests, everything seems to be fine.
Please note that the SysnativeFileCollection is a .rar inside a .zip as the file was too big.

PLEASE help,

Please help. Trying to upgrade it from the Store but it is stuck at installing, it seems halfway through. Left it overnight (8 hours) but still at the same place. Tried again, 3 times already but the same result. Then I tried downloading Window 8.1 ISO through official channels with success but when I try it that way it requires me to input my present Windows 8 product serial which originally came with the machine. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

Hello, I have a Lenovo E31-70 laptop (model 80KX) that has Windows 7 preinstalled. When I tried to upgrade the system to Windows 10, the upgrade failed with the message "We couldn't install Windows 10. We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10. 0xC1900101-0x20017. The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation." I have already installed the latest BIOS, but it didn't help.Does anyone have some idea or some hint?Thank you in advance.

Hallo Community, i'm new here and searching for a solution of my problem. i was searching in other topics, but found there no solution. my laptop/notebook (Y70-70 Touch, i5 4210H, 512GB SSD, 960m GTX) has problems with upgrading to Windows 10. initial situation: It's installed OEM-Windows 8.1 64bit OS via novo-recovery (completely original with no own software) Now i want to upgrade to Windows 10. All things are fine, Windows is downloading all data, wants to restart, restarts ...., is installing updates,    so far so good. But then it wants to restart again (it normal to have more than one restart during that installation), but then its hangy on LENOVO Boot Sreen / Splash Screen. No restart. Does somebody have any ideas whats going wrong??? Are there problems with the BIOS? I tried to update BIOS, but its installed v3.04, online is just v3.03 available.   best regards and thanks for your help.lenovo_HH

I bought this Yoga 2 13" in early 2014 and loved it - except for a hardware problem. The sound doesn't always work, and it is sometimes manipulated by touching the keyboard, which seriously indicates that it is a hardware problem. The computer screen consistently tells me that I've just "plugged in" or "unplugged" an audio jack, when I'm typing or sometimes doing nothing at all. It is humiliating when I'm showing my screen to a coworker (who then asks, "Why is your expensive laptop malfunctioning and distracting me with these popups?"), and it is inconvenient when I'm trying to watch a movie with speakers (because it will literally mute my movie, diverting sound to the audio jack). After months of discussion on Lenovo forums (because some other users had this problem), Lenovo concluded they would not stand by their laptops, and would not replace the laptop or sound card, but would investigate the problem if someone with the problem would volunteer to forfeit their laptop for 6 weeks so that Lenovo can have a look at it.  YEAH - who is going to go without their laptop for 6 weeks? So I've lived with this problem ever since (a problem which pops up several times a day). So - FAILURE #1, Lenovo. Windows 10 update - I tried this when it was available - and it destroyed my ability to function. My screen would flash or shut off entirely, and simple programs like Adobe Reader stopped working. I reverted back to Windows 8.1 until Windows FORCED me to update (first they... Read more

Hello guys: I have Windows 10 ver 1709 on my laptop which is working great. I have tried instaling Windows 10 ver 1803 two times already (with one month gap) on my laptop without success. When it finishes installing and reboots the computer, it never recovers from it. I see a black screen where mouse is enabled and nothing else. Both times, I have reverted back to version 1709. I have checked Lenovo's portal for my computer and I dont see any software/driver upgrades that I need that were released in the last 180 days. Can anyone tell me if I need to upgrade any driver before trying the upgrade? I have the following specs: Product: 20378BIOS: 9ECN43WW(V3.03)

Hello, Thank you for your time, my issue started with a broken screen, I asked for a replacement through mail, when I installed the new screen it seemed to work fine. At a certain time of turning off the computer and starting it, the resolution is off by 86 pixels horizontal, the original resolution is 1366x768 (16:9), and now shows 1280x800 or multiples (w=1280,h=*). At first I thought it was an issue with drivers with Windows 10 the forums entries I found seem to indicate this, tried all of them. I also tried the custom screen resolution tool from Intel, it adds the resolution inside the tool, but it does not list the new resolution in the "graphics properties" section. With no luck at solving the problem I tried to boot a GNU/Linux Live version from a FlashDrive, with GNU/Linux showing the same resolution limitation. I've noticed that going to the BIOS is showing the same screen usage. After this, my old screen still works it just the crystal that got cracked, I reinstalled and noticed that has the same screen size problem, so is not the new screen it seems. This is the point till I've gotten, don't know much about UEFI maybe it saves screen resolution information at a place I can't reach, and is not adapting itself correctly imposing it screen scan to the OS that start to work after UEFI. The only thing that comes to mind. Your help is appreciated,Thank you.
