Sound Icon in Systray will not open Sound Dialog

Q: Sound Icon in Systray will not open Sound Dialog

I recently installed a new Logitech G930 headset on my Win 7 x64 system. It has had problems from the beginning. The problem is the Sound Control will not open when you try to. It is definitely related to the G930 software as if I uninstall it everything is back to normal. At times it may take many minutes and eventually open up . Leads me to indicate it is trying to open, but it is hung up. I may open a webpage or something and then it will open. Seem to be a hangup issue.

What I have done-

Installed the software 3 different times. Same result each time
Clean boot- Same result.

I have been around the block on this one with Logitech support. No success. I really don't want to return these, but if this continues I will have to.

Does anyone have any pointers?

Preferred Solution: Sound Icon in Systray will not open Sound Dialog

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm new to this forum, and was wondering whether anyone could help with an annoying problem that's just recently started.

I recently installed (on my P4 3GHz machine running WinXP SP2) a LogiTech wireless keyboard and mouse combo (MX3200). It seems to be working fine, but I've noticed that ever since I installed the additional software that came with it (for the enhanced features), I've had problems with the speaker icon not loading in the sys tray at startup.

I uninstalled the LogiTech software, and rechecked the settings in the SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES folder in the control panel, but it still doesn't want to load the speaker icon at startup.

I noticed that when I installed the LogiTech software, it seemed to reset the settings for my computer audio (WinXP reset my computer audio to NONE INSTALLED). I checked what I believed to be the correct setting when re-choosing the audio device, but ever since then, the speaker icon does not load in the sys tray. If I go in and MANUALLY reselect it to "APPEAR IN THE SYSTEM TRAY," it will appear, but once I shut down and boot up again, the same problem happens.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

After a recent power outage, when I booted my computer up again (HP Pavilion 750n), there was no sound and the speaker icon did not appear in the systray like it usually does. I tried to troubleshoot with my limited computer abilities by looking the the Sounds and Audio Devices>Hardware>Properties. The only thing that it said wasn't working properly was the Intel® 82801 BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller. The message was "This device cannot start (Code 10)".

I don't have any disks for this computer (running Windows XP as an OS). When I called the local computer tech and explained this, he said that I was lucky if that was all that was wrong and he refused to help me because my computer was so old. He doubted that he could get a replacement board or card of it had become fried. I wanted to know if this is more likely a driver or a sound card problem, what can I do about it (if anything) and could the power outage have caused it? Looking on the internet most suggestion for this problem is to re-install the driver or do a system restore. I don't have any disks for my computer since I bought is as a used tower. If it is a driver or hardware problem, would doing a system restore help?

During periods of inactivity i've noticed that my hard drive light gets going and I can hear some activity... I've noticed that every now and then while i'm browsing around, sometimes the focus gets taken off of my browser and I have to reclick the browser to put it back as the active window... One last thing is that whenever I reboot, my sound icon does not appear anymore in my system tray and I have to manually add it back through the control panel (it is supposed to be there by default, according to settings)

I've run both Spybot and MBAM as well as AVG to no avail they all did not find anything, so i'm wondering if i have anything suspicious...

You can get them here, download the file, it is a self extracting zipped archive.
Create a folder on your desktop, cut and paste the file into it, then double click the file to decompress the archive. After decompression there is a readme text file with installation instructions.

I have a Dell Studio XPS which has the sound adjust buttons (for volume increase and decrease) on the keyboard. When I press those buttons, the sound does increase and decrease but I am unable to view the bars & I was able to do so previously. I can always use the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of my desktop, but being able to view the bars by pressing the buttons on my keyboard was more convenient.

Can anyone help me with getting white bars back when these buttons are pressed? Thanks.

A:Sound icon present but sound bars not visible

Sounds like a corruption between Windows and the keyboard drivers. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the keyboard and then LEFT click "uninstall" (this assumes you do not have a password to enter to get into Windows when you boot up). Then restart the PC (your mouse will still work) and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Keyboard.

If this does not fix it, the keyboard may be faulty. You can post on the Dell Community Desktop Hardware section and maybe someone there has some additional advice. Desktop General Hardware Forum - Desktop - Dell Community

@Oldphartster Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! I find it highly unlikely that any desktop would have additional internal speakers.  The speaker that is there is not really for listening to music; instead, it is a hold over from older days when PCs emitted "beeps" to indicate hardware failures. Any speaker for a desktop is going to plug into a stereo audio jack (light green) on the back of the unit.  There is also likely to be an earphone jack on the front of the unit. Here is the HP product page, drivers and software, that I could find for the HP CD5800 Microtower PC:  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3658084&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4059 I don't know what version of Win7 you are running, so you will have to select that using the pulldown. Then when you get the driver page, download the ADI driver under Drivers- Audio. When you install that and reboot, the red x should vanish and you should have audio.Good Luck

Hi, first of I love your website here and everybody is so helpful (I posted here about a year back and I got help right away )

Anyways, I've been having this problem where my sound icon won't appear in the system tray. When this happens I can't adjust the sound using the buttons on my laptop either. I can usually fix this problem by doing a system restore to a week or two ago, but it seems like everytime I restart my computer I get this problem again (I usually just put my computer on standby). I wasn't having this problem for a while because I never turned off my computer (standby ) but I just got a random BSOD while watching a youtube video and when I restarted my computer the same problem occured (no sound icon in system tray and I can't adjust sound with buttons on laptop). I've tried many different things, from simple stuff like going into the control panel and checking "show sound icon in tray" to stuff like editing the registry (I tried googling how to fix this problem). Well I've had this problem for about half a year, and I'm officially sick of it . If any of you know how to fix this I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

There is no sound (except sys beep) working on my computer. Sound icon is missing. Looked at sound help links. In bios there is no place that i can see to be sure enable is on. I see no place in all the setup area where sound is listed or anything like that.

In deleting sound card, (getting exclamation pt), says PCI multimedia device found - and then i try to load drivers, but i don't know what sound card i have. I've tried lots of different drivers. But i feel that the sound icon missing is causing the underlying problems.

(I just started using this system after not using for a few years.) Last time I used it, somehow I got the sound to work.

Some have suggested is AMD problem, but when i go to that site, it offers 3 categories of m/b's.
AMD Athlon 64™ Processor
AMD Opteron™ Processor
AMD Athlon™ XP, AMD Athlon™ & AMD Duron™ Processors

I chose the last one (?) and downloaded the one that checks drivers, and on running, it says, failed to find any components.

On Accessories/sys tool/sys info/components:
PCI Multimedia Audio Device
This Device Has a Problem: Code=28 (0x1C)
The drivers for this device are not installed correctly. To install the driver for this device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

Any help you can give me to get sound working is appreciated.

Thanks, ganaan

On my laptop I have an SD card slot. Whenever an SD card is in, a removable storage device shows up in "Computer" in Explorer. When I open up "Computer" through the start menu, the icon for the drive as expected (the standard SD card icon), but if I navigate to "Computer" in a File Open dialog (e.g. in Firefox, File->Open File...), the icon is missing. The drive is there, but the icon is one of those generic missing-icon icons. I've attached a screen shot.

This is a relatively new build (Vista Business x64), and I've noticed it from day one.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

A:Vista SD Card Icon in File Open Dialog Missing

Any thoughts on this?

I've deleted my icon cache, and there was no change.

I've also tried to change the icon for a drive using the registry, as explained in a few tutorials and posts on this site, and that hasn't worked either. In fact, I can't even change the icon that appears in "My Computer" for the SD Card drive, let alone in the File Open Dialog.

For completeness, attached is the proper icon being displayed in My Computer.

Brand new Windows 7 Home Premium (6 bit) computer. When I click on the Sound control panel item, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to open. But that's kind of minor (although I'd like to know how to fix it), because sometimes the HDMI sound to my HDTV works fine, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The only sure fix is to reboot the computer, which isn't really what I want to do every time I want sound coming from the HDTV speakers.

More details: if I reboot the computer, and then switch from the monitor to the HDTV for my video output, I can open the Sound control panel (opens at normal speed) and then I select the HDTV to be the default sound device; and everything is good. At some point, I stop watching the HDMI output to the HDTV, switch the video to my main monitor, and the sound now comes out of the computer speakers. Great. That's what I want. I can even turn off the HDTV, come back 20 minutes later, switch the video back to the HDTV and the sound goes through the HDTV speakers. Switch back and forth a couple of times and everything works as expected. Great. That's what I want.

But at some later point in time, it stops working, and I don't know what triggers this. At this later point in time, I switch the video from the monitor to the HDTV, but now the sound remains with the computer speakers, if I try to open the sound control panel, it takes 1-2 minutes, and when it finally opens the sound control panel no longer lets me select the HDTV to be the default soun... A:Sound Control panel takes 2 minutes to open; HDMI sound inconsistent

I had the slow opening sound panel/playback section for a while. I tried several things and all of a sudden the problem went away. Not sure what fixed it but I have updated the AMD video card drivers several times, no audio driver updates. The only common point is that I too have an AMD video card (HD7770).

In most cases, if the PC "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default audio playback device and then an HDMI cable is plugged into the PC it will automatically switch to the HDMI sound (and make it the default playback device), and if the cable is disconnected it automatically switches back to the speakers. If you are having problems accessing the sound panel, this is another option (for most) until you get the slow opening panel issue resolved.

Hi there,
One day when my computer shut itself off, when it re-started the bottom bar with the time etc. was grey, not the normal blue, and the sound speaker was missing. When I tried to play music it would work and it gave me an error about an audio mixer. I had gone onto downloads.com and downloaded a new driver update. That worked! The the computer got moved again and shut down, the bottom bar went grey again, and the sound won't work again, the speaker is also missing again. I downloaded the driver again but this time it won't work.

I have checked all my cords, when I check my properties everything says it is working.

What could be wrong?

hello everyone,
sorry my 1st post is a request for help,

i have a hp dv6000 laptop, with vista os on it;
which was working fine, until yesterday, when i plugged in my audio cable,
and the other end of it in a small guitar amp lol;
i did that many times before when i wanted to listen to music, to enhance the sound quality;
there was no problem before;
now yesterday there was, for some reason there was no sound while a song was running;
i checked everything so far, nothing changed, then i finally unplugged it(and i don't think i've damaged the jack)
nothing, no sound;
after a while searching for the problem and checking the h/w devices, which seemed to be having no error, i uninstalled the sound driver and reinstalled it back again/i used the one from hp;
i also read on their website that sometimes the pavillion has a problem with the audio jack?
before i did the driver i did a system restore, and this is when even the sound icon disappeared!
after all, still NO sound icon and NO sound!:(

i have no idea what is going on;
could it be that the amp fried my sound chip?
and how can i find that out?
what would you guys do in my case?

I can no longer record any sound coming through my sound card - only from microphone input. The option 'Rec. playback. IDT high definition audio codec' has simply vanished. I'm baffled and have tried everything. Drivers appear to be OK and up to date.

I've included snips of the dialog box as it used to be (left), and the way it is now (right). (I've right-clicked and checked 'show disabled devices' and 'show disconnected devices'. )

What may have caused the problem? Hard to say as I haven't tried to use this function for a few days. but possibly... Audio software which i have installed, then uninstalled, or new version of Skype, might have changed settings? Or I've 'cleaned up' too aggressively and have deleted something important?

Cheers all,

Problem is as stated in the thread; I downloaded, untar'd and set the theme up today. I know it's specifically the "Close Window" sound since it's unique from the others. I'm referring to the following actions in particular (there may be more things I could do to proc it, but I haven't checked yet)...
Opening a Program
Opening a Folder in Windows Explorer
Starting a new Windows Explorer Session
Closing a Window (expected function)
Closing a Windows Explorer Session (expected function)
Those not followed by (expected function) have a different sound assigned to them, although the Close Window sound plays anyways. Not always immediately after the action is performed, either - there can be anywhere from a 1 to 15 second delay before the .wav plays.

The sounds are located in C:\Windows\Media\AltimitOS\ with AltimitOS being a custom folder I copied in. I originally untar'd everything to the desktop, then created and moved everything into the folder and tried running the theme from there. I've made sure all file paths are leading to the \Media\AltimitOS folder.

Any help is appreciated. Cheers,

I have good sound with other speakers on this desktop, but I wanted to save some workspace on my desk, so I recently got a new AX510 sound bar and attached it onto a Dell 2208WFP monitor, one of the monitors listed for that soundbar.  It powers up via the AC port built in to the monitor, just like it should, and I've correctly connected the audio cable on the soundbar audio output on my desktop.  But there's no sound at all.  I did get a static "pop" once... but no other sound.
So I am trying to figure out whether the sound bar is defective, or if this is possibly a Windows 10 issue, as I've read a few odd posts on the internet about people suddenly finding that previously working sound bars don't work in Windows 10.... or some other incompatibility (my desktop is a Studio XPS 8100, Windows 10).  I realize all of my equipment is not the latest, but it's all been in great working condition and the one new addition is the sound bar... I did plug my old speakers back in again, and they still work just fine.
I was thinking I can test the sound bar by connecting it to another computer at work (tomorrow) that's running Windows 7.  to determine if it's a Windows 10 issue -- or if it just doesn't work at all -- but would that be a definitive test it's not a Dell computer?  Any other ways to diagnose the problem and pin it down?  I can conceivably still return the sound bar if I determine it's defect... A:New and odd systray icon

Put your mouse on it to see if it reveals what it is, if not click or right click on it to see what it offers as these are made to be clickable. It looks like either a brightness control or connection manager with the waves coming off it. I've not seen that one before.

Meanwhile scour your Control Panel>Programs for anything you don't want and didn't install. If you order it by date it may be immediately obvious so you can uninstall it.

I downloaded and ran Spybot S&D and found nothing. I then unplugged the internet connection until I can get help.
Mousing over the icon, right or left clicking it all produce no results whatsoever. The icon has a bluish triangle like field above, a light brown and dark brown field below, surrounded by what appear to be some whitish dots. It is very non-descript. I looked at the startup tab from msconfig, can't really tell what should be there and what shouldn't. Unfortunately my system restore function was turned off -- don't know how that happened.
I have a Toshiba Satellite running Vista Home. My Windows Defender icon has also disappeared.

I have mIRC set to minimize to the systray (notification area) and on occassion the icon disappears. It has nothing to do with hiding inactive icons or anything like that, looked into that.

I thought maybe I could kill the systray process and restart it, although I don't know the name of the task. Any ideas?

mIRC is still running, it's in the process list, and I can see myself if I join the channel on my other computer.

I don't seem to have a connection icon in my systray. Seems like I used to have one but don't remember how long it's been gone. I'm running Win 98 and have a dial-up modem with a router connecting two computers. Can anyone tell me how to get a connection icon in the systray or if there is some other way to determine what my actual connection speed is?

A:Connection icon in systray

Try this:

Doubleclick My Computer, doubleclick DialUp Networking, rightclick your connection, and choose 'properties'.
In the 'Connect using' section click 'Configure'.
Click on the 'options' tab, and check 'Display Modem Status' in the 'Status Control' section.

There are lots of third party apps however.

Take a look here for some pointers: Bandwidth Monitors

Good luck,

Is there some way of reducing the number of icons in my SysTray without affecting the respective programs? I have 16 and I know that's way too many and may account, in part, for the sluggish performance of my computer. My OS is XP Pro.

A:SysTray Icon Removal?

to have them in the systray in the first place isn't good, whatever in the systray is currently running. so either way, have them there or not is still already consumed your resources.
do a start - run - msconfig and check the startup tabs
also check the programs that is loading and have it disabled startup with windows.

I am not sure if this is an infection of some sort, but I thought I give it a try here first.

Firstly, back in 2004, I had purchased a HP PhotoSmart 8450 printer, which I installed on computer 1, see below for computer 1 specs, and everything was working great. However, I had to move to a medical center back in 2008, which led me to pack everything up in boxes. By the summer of 2009 I came back home and reconnected only my 2 computer with no printer installed. At first, I had no problems except for in the past month, all of the sudden the HP icon in the systray continues to flash on for 10 seconds and then disappears for 1 second and then reappears and does the same process over and over again. I would usually think it might be doing this because the printer is not installed. However, the strange part, which to me acts like a virus, are for the following reasons

1. Did not have this problem when I reconnected my computers last summer, and it only has started last month.

2.At first, I thought the flashing icon wasn't that important, however, just until last night I could not run any of my animations in Maya without the animation being real choppy. (for those of you who don't know what Maya is, it is a 3D modeling and animation program for doing 3d games and video.)

3. there is no warning about my printer being disconnected. Normally, this icon should pop-up a bubble message stating that the printer is disconnected.

4. If I try to hover over the icon, the flashin... Read more

Ok, about 7 hours later after I had posted my problem, I just received a virtual memory too low warning, but no applications where running. In addition, I went to the task manager->processing tab, and it reported the largest memory process used was AVG at 13,144KB, which is very little. i then went to the performance tab to see what my available memory was averaging at, which is about 410MB. I do not understand why I am getting virtual memory warnings when Windows Task manager appears to show very little activity and memory usage.

Am I getting a false/positive report. I really think I need to upload a Hijackthis Log in here, but I will still wait for one of you techs to help out, that is if you could reply back soon

I recently upgraded to Quicktime 5.0.2 on a Windows 2000 Professional PC. After installing it, it creates a little icon in the system tray. I got the "configsys" file to eliminate items on startup and eliminated that file (qttask.exe). So, the next time I booted up, the icon didn't appear...yeah! However, the next time I booted up, the icon was back! Somehow it recovered itself. I have tried this three times now, and each time I boot the second time, it is back. Any ideas how to remove that system tray icon for good??? (Besides deleting Quicktime?)

Presently, I have 12 systray icons, most of which I dont really need to see...

Is there a way to control which systray icons you see, and which you dont?

A:systray icon control??

You can stop these programs from running via system configuration utility, and you can right click the icon and close the program/app. As long as the program is running there will be an icon in the systray, thats just how windows works, you can hide inactive icons also via start/properties.

Hope this helped
