Preferred Solution: should i just reinstall windows?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Title says it all. My computer is very sick and I've received an error message today saying windows must be reinstalled, insert the reinstallation dvd. I don't have that disk anymore though I do still have the product key.

What should I do?

A:How do I reinstall windows 7 if I've lost the reinstall disk?

You may need to buy a new one. Do you have a recovery partition on your hard drive?

That is a very strange message, though. Are you sure you're not infected? Where and when did you see such a message?

My son's laptop 'died' earlier this week. Screen just went blank. In the end, I decided to rebuild the drive.
After much difficulty, I managed to reinstall the OS (Windows 10) and all seemed well.
Oh, except the reinstall does not provide even WiFi drivers at a minumum - so after figuring that out I had to dig that up too on another computer and transfer/install. Problems over... I thought.
As the XPS went on its way to update drivers - the screen suddenly went blank (hello! haven't we met before?)... made some melodious beeps and chirps as though trying to communicate (it wasn't morse code) and now the computer continues to hum away (the fans?) with that.... black screen.
Before I wipe everything and re-install, again, and perhaps let the machine run with old drivers at the risk of malicious attacks etc (small price to pay for a 'working' computer I suppose), might anyone know of solutions to this problem?
With thanks in advance.

A:Dell XPS 13 Black Screen - cause for OS reinstall - happened again after reinstall during driver updates

Hi ASHAROM,
What is the exact system model?
Is there any damage / liquid spillage on the system?
For the beeps, first we need to check if the HW is functional:
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors.
Drivers: If you are using a retail image of Win 10 OS, it will contain only the OS installation files, since the OS is generic. The hardware on each system would differ and hence, the drivers need to be reinstalled. If you are using a recovery image for your system, then it would contain the required drivers with the OS image.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop (c. 2009) that had Windows 7 Home Premium on it. A couple months ago, I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 after continually getting prompted by Windows. Big surprise, my computer is not compatible, and therefore I can't see
anything on the monitor without plugging it into the TV via a HDMI cable, the "Start" button at the bottom left corner doesn't work, etc. It would also not let me go back to Windows 7 within the 30 days period. The laptop works perfectly fine minus
Windows 10 have screwed it up.

After talking to Dell support, they said Windows 7 needed to be reinstalled via a DVD. My friend had an original, unopened Dell reinstallation DVD with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. When I try to do the reinstall, I choose "look for updates,"
and when it is in the "Setup is copying temporary files" first part of the install, the Unexpected error message with error code 0X6 telling to restart install pops up. I have tried multiple times, and I continually get the same error message.

Please help!

I reinstalled my operating system. All my other performance scores are the same except performance for Aero dropped from 6.7 to 5.7.

I downloaded the drivers for my computer model from Dell and installed them in the order Dell said to. Some of the drivers didn't install, so I moved on until I got to internet and from there I updated automatically. I'm guessing the ones that got skipped might have messed something up?

When I try to update automatically from Dell, these Intel drivers never work. It says they installed successfully but when I scan for updates again they always show up again:

Intel 8 Series Chipset Device Software Driver
Intel(R) Management Engine 9.0 Components Installer

(Intel 8 Series Chipset Device Software Driver also repeatedly shows up as an update on my other computer of the same model, so I don't think this is anything to worry about.)

When I tried to automatically update with an Intel update program, it could not automatically update; I believe it said it was because custom drivers were installed.

This is a new computer, so everything should be working. I'm just trying to get that score up to where it should be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

So I recently bought a Lenovo desktop that came with windows 7 pre-installed - I guess I havn't logged on this computer for a couple of months so it was kind of a surprise for me when i turned it on 2 days ago and it all of a sudden said " This copy of windows is not genuine " ? I've only had the thing for 5-6 months... Did the windows 7 home prem already expire, or? It keeps asking me to "Activate windows now" since the "Activation period has expired" - It doesn't make any sense though because I never had this problem before... I tried contacting customer support but there's no phone number anywhere... apparently you have to download a program which finds your serial number for you then you can call, but the program won't download for me - it just says " Failed " - Does anyone know the customer support phone number? Or Does anyone know how to reinstall windows on a "Pre-installed system" ? Thanks

Ok, so a few days ago I was on my computer and it started running a little slow so I decided to restart. This is when all the trouble began... Following the reboot at the welcome screen i was greeted by several registry errors, and a message saying a backup copy of my registry had to be loaded. So I thought ok, why did this happen? So, I rebooted again to make sure every thing was still in check. After the second reboot(not sure if I can call it that) i didn't even get the welcome screen. Instead i got a quick flash of a BSOD stop error and that was it. So after overall reboots, I figured my computer had crashed and decided to do a clean install. I got my original cd free of scratches and formatted the hard drive completely. Then, when setup began to copy the files about 5 different files could not be copied. I tried to install windows AT-LEAST 10 times. I only got past the welcome screen twice and windows was completely crippled, even though it did manage to load. I tried reformatting, repairing the install, created a new partition and tried to install, and all have failed. The thing i find strange is that almost each time it would copy files some of the files would change. So, I am at a loss and don't know what to do or try next any help. I have a 40gb hd, 256 ram, pentium 4,Msi computer with an Aopen motherboard.

A:Windows xp had BSOD. tried to reinstall windows, but it wont install correctly!?

Pity you reformatted, sometimes that BSOD stop code gives a little insight to a problem. Could have referenced to a hardware fault and somewhat ruled out a few possibilities.
I've also had this problem with files not transfering and I just bought another CD and it worked. It happens with Server 2003 too. The CD just suddenly stops working and thats it.
You could try cleaning your CD\DVD drives laser, but thats a bit of long shot really. (didn't help in my case)

The other day when my Win7 Home Premium desktop failed to boot into Windows, but only to the Repair Options screen, I had to decide between using my two-year old Windows System Image backup file or reinstall Win7 from my original retail DVD. I also decided that this was a good time to install a new, larger drive to use as C:, and let the original drive become D:. Although using the system image was recommended to me by a couple of people, I felt that a two-year old image on the new drive was too out of date, and so I opted to do a fresh install of Win7.

In fact, I found this reinstall to be a fairly painless operation... lengthy, with numerous updates (including SP1) and the subsequent machine restarts, but mostly just a case of clicking OK buttons. Other than an initial network driver to gain access to the Internet, all other drivers were downloaded and installed by Windows Update.

I had previously made a list of my two Program Files folders, so I knew what applications to install, as well as my Start Menu entries. With the exception of the operating system, all my applications are Open Source or freeware (such as Visual Studio Express) and readily available online. It was a good opportunity to "refresh" the entire system. ALthough I had recent backups, all my personal data files were still available on the old drive, and easily copied over to the new drive.

Since both options basically wipe whatever is on the drive, it got me wondering about the advantages, if ... Read more

Hello.
I have an Acer Aspire 6920G, which has recently developed a KSOD. It could be related to AVG, since it was prompting me to restart for a while before I shut down the computer. However, after attempting several fixes, (including renaming all of AVGs folders and the driver) I decided to just reinstall windows. After backing up my files with a Linux live CD, I noticed a problem. On this laptop, you can only reinstall windows through D2D (Disc to Disc). In my carelessness, I failed to notice one of the attempted KSOD fixes had reverted the Acer MBR to the Windows MBR, stopping me from booting into the hidden D2D partition (and the windows recovery tools). I have no other way of reinstalling windows, so I thought I'd ask what I should do here. From what I see, I either have to restore the Acer MBR (which seems impossible without windows) fix the KSOD, then fix the MBR in windows, or figure out how to boot into the hidden D2D partition Any thoughts? Thanks.

When you install Windows the boot will be set to boot to that Windows only (in your case; non-newer Windows installations could be included in general). So the outline of how to proceed is

a. decide how you will get back to the dual boot you want, and make preparations if needed.
b. install Windows.
c. restore the dual boot.

As I assume that you have a GPT disk and UEFI motherboard I cannot give any more details.

I am just getting to know my T580 and I have a question about the recovery environment. This is the tool that is accessed by pressing the F11 key in the Startup Interrupt Menu. I would like to know, in the event that everything else is destroyed (e.g. by filling all other pattitions with zeroes and then deleting the partitions), would the recovery environment reinstall Windows as it was when I took the ThinkPad out of the box ? If yes, how does it do this? Does the recovery partition contain everything necessary to do this, or are downloads and/or USB media required? Also, how does the firmware know where to find the recovery environment? I presume it boots the partition on the first disk that has the expected GUID (i.e. it has DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC). Is that right ? If so, then I would assume that I only need to back up that one partition (it's 1000M, with 451M used and 586M free), and would be able to repartition a new disk with one partition of the appropriate size and GUID, and restore the backup into it. Then reboot through the startup interrupt menu and press F11 to reinstall Windows. Do I have that correct ?

They are both right and wrong. Acer does not give out win 7 dvd's any more as part of their software reduction program. Instead they give a "restore" dvd which can be used to restore the factory settings if the restore partition is there.

They are usually in a separate partition (sometime D:\)
If you have the factory image on D:| you can use the dvd to trigger a "restore"

You first step should be to look/explore to see if the acer image and partition is there.

Yes those discs you made will reinstall W7, disc 1 is bootable, put it in the drive and restart the PC, when you see the Dell logo press ESC key a few times, then select your boot device (cd-dvd rom), it should now boot from disc 1 and start the recovery process, it is a lengthy process, so be patient and dont do anything unless instructed to, it will reboot on its own many many times, do not interrupt the process. When it is done with recovery there will be a screen to start setting up your user name and so forth.

I had 2 partitions on my HDD, one for windows 7 and one for backup. I wanted to reinstall windows but keep the backup partition so i put in my install dvd and booted up from it. At the manage partitions point i think i saw 5 partitions:

The 100mb for windows files
The windows Partition
The Backup Partition
A 1megabyte partition
And a zero megabyte partition.

I deleted all the partitions except the backup. I made a new one for windows. I procceed with the installation and everything went good, until when the installer rebooted the system. And thats where's my problem. The bios detects the HDD and stops there.

Here's a pic of it:

It happend with me before with my 500gb hdd and thats why i bought this 1tb one but now i dont want to spend money again for that if i dont have to. Maybe i deleted a partition that was for the hdd to work propely? And if so is there anyway to reset that? If someone can help me please do it. I realy don't know what to do:S

Hey,

So I had a problem today in which Windows decided that it wouldn't boot, Instead it would just reboot constantly

This happened after I heard a ticking noise from my computer, things started to freeze, and so i had to restart. When I tried to turn it back on I had the above problem.

NOW, I tried to use Windows Repair option that is there by default. It loads up the blue windows background, gives me a pointer but then doesnt do anything.

I have a W7 repair disc, I booted to it. That too done the exact same thing, it lets me choose the language/keyboard style to use and then sits on the blue windows background and gives me no options.

Finally, I have a full W7 installation disc that I booted to. I tried the repair option and got the same problem as before.

I also clicked the "Install Now" button and it has been stuck on "setup is starting" for over 10 minutes now, with no hope of it doing anything.

So currently I cannot repair or install Windows. I assumed it was a harddrive failure, but why wont my disc based solutiions even work?

Any help would be great, thanks

So here's the story:
I was just getting some work done last night on my PC, when suddenly the power went out. After a while when the power came back on, my computer would not boot. It was stuck on the Windows loading screen. So I restarted and did diagnostic (pressed F9 before booting), turns out that everything is okay including CPU, memory and Hard Drive connection test.

So I restarted again and let the Windows load, it took 20 minutes. After which it started some disk checking (It looked like the Windows XP disk checking except it had a black background and it took 1.5 hours).

It showed that 8 files or indexes or something were unreadable. Then it restarted, and opened startup repair. Startup repair is apparently checking or disk errors which might take over an hour, but it has been over 5 hours now.

So I know that my Hard Drive is okay since it has been doing all that, but maybe the Windows files are corrupted.

I decided to re-install Windows but I want to keep my files. So I had to move all the files from the system drive to another one so I don't lose my files in the C drive. But I don't have another partition, I just have a 1.35 TB C Drive and I don't have any means of backing the files up on an external HDD.

So I was thinking if I could install Linux from a Disc, creating a partition with Linux, move all the files to that partition and then reinstall Windows from a CD.

well i have a problem on my 2 year old laptop. today i've been using my laptop all day and night, writing a psych paper. i was working downstairs and grew tired of it. so i turned off my computer and headed upstairs. once i got it plugged up again and turned on, a problem occurred. windows crashed and my computer restarted. this happened just as windows finished booting up. this is a constant loop. sometimes i catch a glimpse of a blue screen but it dissipates in a blink of an eye. so i decide i got a virus or something so i try to do a fresh reinstall with my xp install disk. my computer boots off the disk to windows setup. it tells me...
TO SET UP WINDOWS XP NOW, PRESS ENTER
TO REPAIR A WINDOWS XP INSTALLATION USING RECOVERY CONSOLE, PRESS R
TO QUIT SETUP WITHOUT INSTALLING WINDOWS XP, PRESS F3
so i press enter and it gets me to the point where it gives me the terms of agreement for installing a new windows. i press f8 to agree and it says loading dosnet.inf and that i need to insert a windows install disk. even though i have one in my drive. so i press f3 and restart. nothing..... so i go to windows recovery program. i mess around in there doing chkdsk getting the message
chkdsk found one or more errors on the volume

when i try to load regularly now it giv... Read more

ok, this is strange.. I reinstall Windows XP Home because My computer was messed up. It deleted all my files.. so on my desktop screen I don't have any Program Files Icons BUT it still save my Files!!! I have my orginial files in my Documents folders and In my Program Files It has all the Programs and files that go with that program???
How do I zap everything back on my desktop screen so I don't have to go Download each files as new again??? And I how do i get my Internet Favorite Links and my Notepad with my saved information in it??

Thank you!!

ps. Yes I did try the "Start" and then program files and none of the programs are there.. BUT yet it is in my Program Hard drive C: Program files... with the Program and all it's content???

A:Reinstall XP Home How do I reinstall all my Program Files I Have?

You installed a new version of XP in the same folder as your old one instead of repairing the one that was there already. Your programs are there, but not "installed". You need to reinstall all the programs to create their registry entries and shortcuts.

You probably have 2 "Windows" folders, too, with different names. Go to Start > Run, and type:

%windir%

to see which one you are using now and delete the other one.

I wanted to convert my Sony Vaio back to Windows 7 after updating to Windows 8 last year. I tried using the recovery disks that I created when I got the laptop. It told me that I couldn't reinstall. So after trying multiple things, I finally decided to wipe out the entire hard drive thinking that it would automatically reinstall Windows 7 64 bit. Now when I try to reinstall, it can't find a drive to install it to and all I have is a black screen now telling me Operating System Not Found....please help so that I can reinstall Windows 7 64 bit on my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX with a 500 GB SATA Hard drive and 6 GBs of RAM.

I'm thinking I may need to create a partition so that when I put the recovery DVD in to reinstall Windows, it has a drive to install the software onto. I don't know how to create a partition or if that will solve my issue. My laptop is now worthless. Also, I can't access BIOS. I completely erased the entire hard disk.

A:Erased hard drive to reinstall Win 7 but now won't reinstall

Jim depends on how you set the wipe up and how you formated it mate look at this and if you have access to another machine do it.
If the drive is wiped clean then follow this it says for SSD's but will also work on spinners

i've decided to go ahead and reinstall w8pro given my extensive messing around with it has finally caused some quirky, unexpected results - it's a relatively new installation, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, didn't get a chance to install a lot of third party programs and such. the thing is, i did purchase and install the w8 media center pack - how do i go about getting this back? do i have to contact ms? i'm fairly certain that i don't have an activation number for the pack, if i recall i just paid for it online and then was allowed to download it and install it.

also, i thought i would go ahead and do a clean install all over again as opposed to a reset or refresh given i want to make certain that i'm starting from scratch again... or do you think a reset or refresh might be the better option (i'm not concerned about keeping any personal settings or files intact). any advice would be appreciated.

A:W8 Media Center Pack - Reinstall After W8 Reinstall?

They will have given you a Product Key for it - Just reinstall Windows 8 and then get Media Center again using the same Product Key, it's yours now. After you install it, the Media Center Key will be your new OS key.

My computer is pretty slow and I'm looking to do a clean install and start from scratch. I'm currently running Win 8.1 I bought windows 8 a few months ago and my product key is not working anymore (says its invalid). Also when I click the reinstall windows option, it gives me an error message "some files are missing" and wont let me perform a clean install. Then when running the win setup to get the necessary files, it keeps telling me that windows cannot establish an internet connection.

A:Won't Let me Reinstall Windows

Backup what you don't want to lose to external media. Boot from your 8.0 install media and do a custom install, not a reset or refresh. Then delete the partition Windows is installed to and create a new blank partition. Then install Windows 8.0 to the blank partition. It sounds like your trying to reset 8.1 with 8.0 install media, that won't work. Maybe this will help.

I installed WINDOWS 7 over VISTA 2 months ago. Everything was fine for a while, but now internet is very slow, system restore doesn't work. Can I reinstall my WINDOWS 7 over the present WINDOWS 7, since it is no longer vista? THANKS.

A:Reinstall windows 7?

I imagine the problems you now have in 7 are caused by installing it "over" Vista. A "clean" install always
results in a better install than upgrading. I would reccomend that you run Windows Easy Transfer and save
all of your program data and program settings to an external HDD. Then clean install 7 and run Windows Easy Transfer again to reinstall all of you documents and settings. Yes, you will have to reinstall all of your programs and yes, you can do a clean install using a Windows 7 "upgrade" disc. Simply choose a "custom" install instead of upgrade.

Hey there !

I've recently built a gaming computer and got MSDN version Windows 8.1 Pro.
Sadly, while installing it, I unintentionnaly took the 32-bit version.

Weeks later, realizing that 64-bit is much better for gaming purposes and that some games are not 32-bit compatible, I attempted a clean install, but without succes.

To create my media, I used ''Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool'' and made it from the iso file ''en_windows_8.1_professional_vl_with_updates_x64_dvd_4065194''.

Attempted to create it on a 32-bit, as well as a 64-bit computer, but nothing seems to work out. Every single time, I get this error message :

I verified, and my computer is 64-bit compatible.

What should I do?
Do you guys need anything else to help me?

Thanks alot.

A:Windows 8.1 Pro Reinstall

Maybe I'm not understanding something here, but to do a clean install I believe you would have to boot from the USB device, rather than running the setup program from within your currently running copy of Windows.  That is what you are trying to do isn't it?

Start computer, using whatever the key is on your system to choose boot options (on mine, its F12), choose the USB stick as your boot device.

So, let me start by saying that Dell has made this forum stupidly hard to find and log in to.  The process is ridiculous.
I am working on an Inspiron 3250.  I am trying to reinstall Windows 7, and it will not complete the install.  Windows setup reboots and goes to the final step, where it says "completing installation" and freezes at that point.  One time, I let it sit for 8 hours and it did nothing.
I have run every diagnostic I can find, and everything checks out okay.
Now, I am going to take a big step back to when the problem started.
The system belongs to my mother-in-law, and she reported a problem and I went over to look at it.  There was nothing wrong, but I noticed and updated BIOS (Inspiron_3650_3250_Vostro_3650_3653_3250_3.3.10.exe) and decided to install it.  During the install, everything seemed to go fine, but when it rebooted after the update, Windows would not finish booting.  It would not boot in safe mode either.
After doing diagnostics and not finding anything, I decided to try reinstalling Windows.  And, that failed as above.
At one point, I noticed that the bios is still on version 3.3.6, but the updated file that I downloaded seems to be 3 3.3.10.  This seems to suggest that the bios update failed, and I am afraid that something went wrong during the upgrade.  I have tried resetting the bios defaults, but that made no difference.
I work in Tech Support, so I can handle complex instructions, if ... Read more

A:Cannot Reinstall Windows 7

If you haven't begun the install, be sure the BIOS update didn't change the drive mode (RAID to SATA/AHCI, the reverse, etc.).  That could be the problem.

Are you using the Dell recovery media for your system, or another source for Windows 7?  This is a Skylake system, for which a standard Windows 7 install media has no full support.  You CAN install Windows 7 on it, but you'll need to build a custom install media set to do so -- the instructions for doing that are here:
The procedure isn't for the faint of heart
www.dell.com/.../how-to-install-windows-7-on-systems-with-skylake-chipset
The other option is to get a Windows 7 ISO for your system from Dell - that is, the recovery media if you don't have it:
www.dell.com/.../dell-systems-with-the-intel-skylake-or-braswell-chipset-cannot-boot-to-dell-windows-7-media-due-to-no-usb-20
And probably the best option is to skip 7 altogether and install Windows 10 instead.  Windows 7 has less than three years to run before updates for it will cease as they did with XP.

First of all I know nothing about the inside of a computer. So having said that. My laptop Dell Latitude D640, Windows XP Professional, says I have no disk to boot off of. I changed the bios to boot off the CD I got for my Operating System. Once all the info was loaded, it said to hit R for recovery (do not have a recovery disk) or hit continue. I hit continue and it still tells me I have no disk. This computer was refurbished and worked for 4 months and then I got an error message that said A disk read error occured. I was told to get a reinstallation CD and use it. I changed the bios, everything is fine until I get ready to reboot. Nothing. What am I doing wrong. Is it time to call in the calvary or throw it out. I hate it because not having the money to spend on a new one, I purchased a refurbished on. Please help me. Thanks,

I just got done reinstalling from the disk and when I hit enter it says Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Now what does that mean and how can I fix it. Thank you.

A:Trying to reinstall Windows

I hope you mean Latitude C640. I couldn't find any info on a D640. Anyway, it appears that you have an EIDE hard drive and as such the Windows reinstallation should have worked. It sounds like the hard drive has failed.

Yes, you should be able to insert the cd and boot up as though you are going to install the OS and then select repair or if you are given the choice to install new or upgrade select upgrade and this will keep your files.

A:Windows 7 reinstall

Yes you can

Install on your new drive. Do not give key number. When done, make sure you are happy with the results. Then do a phone activation. Do not give a key number during install and do not check activate automaticaly when online.

Tell the rep, when online that your old hd died and you only have one copy of "Windows in use.

Activate Windows 7 by Phone
