Y500 Ideapad USB ports not working after a Windows update

Q: Y500 Ideapad USB ports not working after a Windows update

Hello, folks! I installed and update from Windows 10 Build 1803 to 1903 around a week ago. I noticed that my USB ports would keep telling me error messages that they didn't make before, such as not recognizing a USB device or complaining about a power surge. After doing some resets and further updates, the problem is there again, but for a different reason. Apparently, my USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller won't start, even though I didn't tamper with my hardware. Here's a screenshot I took of it in the Device Manager, displaying an error code 10: Yay, an error! HahahahahahahahahaHere's the same error, but in UsbTreeView: Does anyone here know how I can solve this problem? The Windows 10 build I currently have installed is 18362.267.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

My touchpad is virtually worthless. Advise people to stay away from the y500 until (if possible) Lenovo fixes this problem.

Please help. Trying to upgrade it from the Store but it is stuck at installing, it seems halfway through. Left it overnight (8 hours) but still at the same place. Tried again, 3 times already but the same result. Then I tried downloading Window 8.1 ISO through official channels with success but when I try it that way it requires me to input my present Windows 8 product serial which originally came with the machine. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

I want to update my BIOS from 2.00 to 2.02, as it might help fix the error code 43 going on with one of my USB drivers, but I haven't been able to find a reliable download for it anywhere. Here's what shows up when I look for the specific BIOS I'm looking for:  I don't want to download one that turns out to be the wrong one, thus screwing over my laptop, so does anyone know where I can get a BIOS compatible with my device? For further clarification, my laptop is a really old hand-me-down that my dad bought 8 to 10 years ago, but it's still in working order and doesn't seem to be showing any signs of shutting down for good. My dad won't buy me another laptop, and I pretty much have no money, so I want to make the best out of this device. P.S., sorry for how much I'm posting! My computer is just being kinda funky ^^'

Hello folks,

I cloned my C drive and updated to windows 10 a week ago. Yesterday SATA ports 2 and 3 stopped working (on MOBO gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP). I think it is a windows 10 problem because I have:
swapped my drives between SATA ports. All drives do not work in ports 2 and 3 and they all work in the other ports. So that eliminates the possibility of disk or cable problems. checked that all ports are enabled in BIOS, and switched ports 2 and 3 off and on again to make sure. swapped back to my old C drive, which is still on windows 7. All ports work fine with win7. I think that eliminates the possibility of a MOBO fault and since everything works with win7 I'm guessing it must be a win10 problem...

It is strange because everything was fine for a week, problem started yesterday with no obvious cause. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks heaps...

A:SATA ports not working after windows 10 update

Sorry! I forgot I had installed more RAM and it didn't occur to me that might affect the SATA ports. Fiddled round and fixed the problem.

The GA-Z77 MOBO has 4 RAM slots. I had 2 8GB sticks in slots 1 and 2 and yesterday I bought 2 more sticks, just because RAM is cheap. The new sticks have large heatsinks on them which I thought would interfere with airflow if I put them in slots 3 and 4. So I moved my old RAM to slots 3 and 4 and put the new RAM in slots 1 and 2.

The SATA ports stopped working, but it didn't occur to me that it could be because of moving the RAM around. Just then I put my old RAM back into slots 1 and 2, and put the new RAM into slots 3 and 4. Bingo, all the SATA ports work. Then I moved it all back again, SATA ports still work.

So I'm guessing my problem was related somehow. The RAM was showing up in my system, and after the install yesterday I did a windows memory diagnostic to make sure it worked. But today, removing the RAM and putting it back in fixed by SATA ports. Go figure!

Hello,

I recently received an update to my ASUS Vivobook laptop which was running windows 10, quite flawlessly I might add. After the update, my touch pad stopped accepting multi-touch and my USB ports stopped recognizing any devices including my mouse. It would not even give a "device not recognized" notification. It just is not detecting the devices.

I first tried to fix my touch-pad by unistalling the SmartGesture driver and reinstalling. Nothing changed. The touchpad only accepts one finger operations so it does not allow for two finger scrolling etc. I read a post that said you don't need SmartGesture because Win10 comes with its own drivers to allow the touch-pad to do those multi-touch things but its still not working.

I tried to fix the USB ports by first changing the power management to not turn off the ports in power saving mode. Didn't work. Then I tried reinstalling the drivers using the Device Manager. Didn't work. Then I tried to uninstall all the USB drivers within Device Manager and restart my laptop and let it reinstall itself. Didn't work. The ports are not faulty because they were all working before the update and I know that my mouse is working and that all the cords and flash drives I plug in are working because I tested them on another PC.

I need help.

A:ASUS USB Ports and Touchpad Not Working after Windows 10 update

Hi, in one sense you're fortunate to at least have had a good Win 10 experience ...until...

Obvious question - what happens if you uninstall the Windows update?

And do you have any system restore points that might be useful?
Or a Win 10 System Image?
Or disk images?

Then when today morning i booted up my pc all my usb devices stopped working, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard when my windows is booted.

However, I am able to use my mouse and keyboard fine in UEFI bios without any issue.

I tried clearing cmos, changing ports, enable and disable legacy usb in bios, enable and disable intel xhci still my mouse and keyboard are not working when windows boots up.

I tried system restore using windows 8 cd but it ends up giving some error during restore and says unable to restore.

I am able to access my system registry and explorer using the windows 8 cd.

Is there anyway i can solve this issue without having to format my pc?.

Thank you,I hope i provided all the info needed for the topic if I am missing anything please let me know.

I have an Ideapad y510p (Windows 8.1) , and my usb ports have stopped working. I know for the fact that the two on the left side of the laptop are physically broken, so I understand why they don't work (they've been like that for a while). However, yesterday, the usb port on the right side of the laptop stopped working too. From what I can tell, its not physically broken like the othher two are, but I can't figure out how to fix it. So far I've tried: 1. Restarting my computer.2. Scanning for usb driver updates in device manager.3. Deleting the usb drivers from the deice manager and restarting my computer.4. Using the Windows 8.1 troublshooting program. None of these have worked. Does anybody have any other suggestions of what to try? If it is actually broken, does anybody know how much it might cost to get my ports fixed or how I would go about doing it myself? Thanks for any replies.

I think the USB2.0 are not damaged cause they do provide power to charge the cellphone. It must be a driver problem. Any hint on how to fix this? Thanks in advance, Boardwalk #LenovoForever

I recently bought my laptop less than a week ago, and for some reason, all 3 of my usb ports stopped working. None of the devices I connect appear on the laptop, despite them saying that they are connected. My phone, for example, charges when connected to the laptop and displays that it is connected, but nothing appears on the laptop itself.I could really use some help. Thanks EDIT: After trying out some solutions I saw on other posts, I was able to get devices such as my external mouse and keyboard to work, but now when I connect my phone, it reapeatedly connects and disconnects. This only happens for the USB porty on the right. For all USB ports, however, the phone does not show up in windows explorer, but does appear in the Control Panel under devices and printers.

A:The USB ports on my Ideapad y510p are not working

I have the same problem. To my belief is it the tolerance in the USB ports (low quality USB ports). Some devices USB cables have slightly bigger USB connectors and stay in the port easier. Other devices don't and get disconnected when inserted. Maybe it is something electromechanical triggering the oscillation. I'm not pleased with this build quality, since my ideapad y500 didnt have this issueLenovo seems to save money on mousepads, USB ports, laptop casing, screen cover, etc. It's what you dont pay for

A:Ideapad z580; usb ports not working

Hi kitcharles ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

When did the issue started ?
Thinking that maybe some setting / drivers changes caused it and you can just do system restore to jump back to a previous restore date as initial step.

Would there be any yellow or black downarrow mark on Device Manager .
Try to show hidden devices in device manager .
Under Universal Serial Bus controllers for USB Mass Storage Devices  , right clcik and uninstall then restart the pc.

You do have 2 USB (ver3.0) port on the left , and 2 USB (ver2.0) on the right based on the user manual (page5).
Which is not working ? Rare that all 3 would go out at the same time but if it does reflect the hardware systemboard controllers for the issue.

If same issue , attempt a power drain and set BIOS on Defaults .
Shutdown and unplug the ac charger, remove the battery and press power down for 15 seconds to drain.
(if you have a USB keyboard and mouse to test, attach it )

Put back the battery and ac charger and turn on using the Novo key (item 6 page2)  instead.
Novo menu apears and choose BIOS set up , f9 to default and f10 save and exit
(would the usb keyboard work tapping on caps/ num locks , usb mouse lit if functional )

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Hi! As of yesterday, all three of my USB ports malfunctioned, and whenever I plug in anything new it says "USB device not recognised, The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it".  It also shows "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" with a yellow exclamation mark and "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed" in Device Manager. There's definitely power coming from the USB ports, just they don't respond to anything I plug in, such as my mouse. I've tried everything I can find online about the error, except updating my BIOS.  However, the BIOS that pcsupport.lenovo.com suggests for my laptop also gives me the warning message "This BIOS is only for Lenovo ideapad 310/510 - 14/15ISK(with touch).  Are you sure you want to update this BIOS on this machine?"  As I don't have a touchscreen, I'm not 100% sure it's the right one.  If anyone could please let me know which BIOS update I should install, or (even better) how to fix my USB issue, that would be fantastic.  Thank you!

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. I have a lenovo ideapad y500 with a 1366x768 screen, and I am looking to pop open the screen, and replace the panel with a 1920x1080 screen. Assuming that I purchase another 15.6 inch screen (size of the original screen), is this possible? A model of the y500 is sold with a 1080p display, and the graphics card in my model is more than capable of outputting such a resolution. I was just wondering if there is a chance that the connections between my laptop and new screen would not match as I do not know if there is some sort of standard port with screens. Thanks!

A:Screen upgrade lenovo ideapad y500

You would need to find out the exact model of the 1080p screen was that was sold with that model and order the same one or compatible replacement model. Laptop screens are not universally interchangeable and you can't just buy any screen and connect it.

In a nutshell, I noticed that my laptop screen would randomly start turning off for no reason while the laptop was still running. The "fix" for this would be to open the laptop up farther. Eventually, only the most wide-open orientation would allow the screen to display, and even that has ceased to work consistently. So I have read other posts about display issues that are common, so I will try to be as specific as I can. THIS IS NOT:  A software issue, as best I can tell. My screen does not show lines or strange patterns, it just goes black. And I don't mean the display goes  blank, it actually turns off. No light. A screen issue, I don't think. The screen displays perfectly well for short periods, and then just cuts off. It seems to be effected by the position of the display (e.g. How open the laptop is). I have to open the laptop as far as it will go for best effect, and even then, the screen will simply shut off after several minutes. Sometimes I can find a "sweet spot", and get the display to function for an hour or more, so long as I don't jostle the laptop more forcefully than using keystrokes. A GPU issue. I have hooked up the laptop, during period of screen blackness, to an external display. Everything shows up fine, which I understand would not happen if the GPU was having problems. MY MAIN QUESTION FOR THOSE SMARTER AND MORE SKILLED THAN I:Is the issue likely a loose screen cable, or something similar? Something that would cau... Read more

Hello Lenovo Community,I currently have a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad. I personally love the processing power of my laptop and have found it to satisfy most of my needs. The problem I seem to be having is with the quality of the keyboard. After about a month after purchase, one of my keys (the F key) seemed to have fallen off. I noticed after examining it that the plastic that holds the keys on simply snapped off (about 5mm of cheap plastic to hold the keys on). I sent it in and have recieved a whole new keyboard within a week. 3 weeks later and my S key has broken again. I do have warranty on it but it is a pain to sendit in EVERY 3 weeks to get a single key fixed. I was wondering if this was simply my bad luck or poor Lenovo keyboard design. I am considering returning my computer or scrapping it to get a new one with better quality. Someone let me know if it's just me that is experience this or if Lenovo has serious issues with their key design.Sincerely,Angry Lenovo Customer.

I've been using this laptop for a few years now, and while it has its fair share of small problems (track pad not working, keyboard coming loose and sometimes not working, speakers slowly dying, start ups where the screen doesn't turn on.) Despite those issues I always found a way to either fix or at least work around the problems until today.I was just watching YouTube videos when the laptop without any warning shut off instantly, even though it was plugged in, and mostly charged. After that none of the power lights would go on at all, not even the charging one. I tried unplugging it, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30 second, and every combination of those steps I could think of. Is there any hope of saving this laptop, or is it bricked?

Hello. As the title says, my Ideapad Y500 is starting to have some issues. A week ago it refused to shut down. Screen would turn off but not the laptop, which would remain kind of dormant. Following some advice online I uninstalled Express Cache form the Control Panel. Now the system turns off, but I have a new problem, this time booting up.Whenever I boot up the laptop it goes to the Lenovo splash screen, then black, then resets to the splash screen and stays there forever. If I shut it down manually and then boot it up again, it goes to Windows as it should, but the whole process takes from 2 to 10 minutes. If I try to restart the system, same thing happens.  If I keep doing this I fear one day it will just die on me.Added to this, I've been getting intermitent failures of the Intel RST software, which sometimes just won't work at all. Other times it's fine. I read somewhere I should update the drivers but I don't know where to find them or if hey may harm my pc even more.I'm running Windows 8.1 (64 bits). So far, besides uninstallid Express Cache, I have run chkdsk on both disks on my system and they appear to be fine (or at least nothing comes up when running the scan). Beyond this, I have no clue how to proceed. I'm not a especially tech savvy person, so any help you guys might give me will be greatly appreciated it. Also, if you can explain it as clear and simply as possible, it would be that much better. Thanks a lot!

I found that the version which is running on my Windows 10 system is 11.5.0.1207 .  The latest version from Intel is 15.9.0.1015 (date 11/14/2017 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST). I do not see a recent version on the Lenovo website.  Which version is recommended by Lenovo or can I install? My disks are:SanDisk SSD U100 16GBST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB 931GB For some Lenovo products I see new? downloads from 2012 which was Windows 8, so not very recent ..(https://support.lenovo.com/nl/en/downloads/) Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have ideapad y500 and  I've noticed that when ever I shut it off and power it back on the battery has drained. Its about 12% per night .. Its rly weird bcs i am not using "always on usb" or any others features. I think that it is HW bug or BIOS. I have noticed that when  i shut it down -> unplug the power cable then i remove and again attach the battery leave it for 12hours and there weren't any battery drain. So it only appears when i just unplug the power cable and leave it. I have read some topics(some ppl have the same problem) but i haven't find any solution. Is there any solution to solve this problem?? Bios version is the latest one.. I haven find any newest bios ver on your website.  Tomas

I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Hi,

I have a problem with my USB3 ports. Prior to upgrading to the Anniversary edition of Windows 10, both my USB2 and USB3 ports worked fine. If I plugged in my external USB3 drive into a USB2 port, the white light on the drive illuminated and the drive operated using USB2. If I plugged the same drive into a USB3 port, then the blue light on the drive illuminated and the drive operated at the higher speed of USB3.

Having updated my system to the Anniversary edition of Windows 10, I can only make the external drive operate on USB3 if it is plugged into a USB3 port when I power the PC up, or reboot. If I power up the PC with the drive disconnected and then plug it into a USB3 port at a later time, then it only operates as a USB2 device.

Can anyone suggest why the USB3 drivers only seem to load when the PC powers up with a USB 3 device connected??

Regards,
Mike

I have an Ideadpad Y500 (Model 20193) running Windows 8.1. It has the original/factory 15gb mSATA SSD and ~1tb conventional SATA HDD. The two drives (SSD and HDD) are managed by Intel Rapid Storage, a sort of software RAID management utility. Although Windows Disk Management (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) sees the two drives as separate devices (see below), they are in a RAID, so to normal Windows, they just look like a single HDD. I want to remove the SSD from the RAID. It is throwing frequent errors. My Windows Event Viewer (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) is full of hundreds thousands of warnings about problems with the SSD. It is nearing end of life. A few times a day the computer will reboot -- but only when running Windows. When I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Linux) it will run for a year without rebooting. I suspect that the Ubuntu installation is bypassing the Intel Rapid Storage software RAID and just directly using the ~1tb SATA HDD (ignoring the 15gb SSD).  I can access the Intel Rapid Storage management program in Windows, but it doesn't give me the option to break apart the RAID; to remove the SSD from the RAID. Supposedly there's a way to access it during POST by pressing ctrl-I, but that doesn't work for me. I can't figure out how to access the Intel Rapid Storage management via BIOS and that's the only place where I could (in theory) break apart the RAID and remove the SSD from the equation.  I realize, of course,... I have a Y500 with windows 8.1, recently the OS became corrupted and goes into a loop of preparing automatic repair, and resetting on boot. I've gotten all my files off by booting into ubuntu through a USB key, however, when I attempt to use OKR to perorm a system restore I only get a black screen. From reading online this is supposedly because I have adjusted partition sizes (I was going to install a 2nd OS, but ended up not doing this, so all partitions are currently at their original size). Is there any way of fixing OKR, or forcing it to boot into it given that my OS is currently kaput?
