ctrl button whacky, no ctrl+alt+del, new windows in firefox

Q: ctrl button whacky, no ctrl+alt+del, new windows in firefox

Hello. I'm usually pretty proficient in handling typical squirreliness with my computer but this one's a tough one for me to wrap my mind around. Here's my computer specs:

Windows XP
P4 2.8Ghz
nvidia 5200 vid card w/ 512MB RAM
Turte Beach Santa Cruz audio card
Seagate 160GB HD
NOD32 antivirus

Just recently I'd been gone to work and my girlfriend was at home on the computer. She usually goes on myspace, xanga, facebook a lot and generally doesn't stray far from those activities. I got home and she pointed out the computer was acting weird.

When I hit ctrl+alt+del, the screen just gets a light blue sheen over it until I click and then it's gone with no sign of the task manager. Also in firefox I cannot use the ctrl keys. The left ctrl key when pressed immediately makes the font size in the window larger and larger and after 2 or 3 presses opens a new tab in firefox. The right ctrl key yesterday was opening a new tab going to gmail and today is doing a variety of things including going back a page and copying text to pages. I can't use any ctrl key combinations in any software without it doing something strange. In Azureus it opens a file's statistics for example. I'm a key command junkie so this is a huge problem and I don't know if my computer's been compromised or what.

I've tried running virus scans on nod32, using spybot search and destroy, reinstalling my keyboard drivers, upgrading to firefox 2, updating windows, and just searching around the internet, but no luck anywhere. Opening the task manager from the windows folder did nothing. Please help me. In the worst case scenario I'm just going to get a new hard drive, copy over all the stuff I need and reformat but I'd rather not resort to that because of my monetary situation at the moment. Thank you for your time.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

Thread title pretty much sums it up: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work. I use CTRL-V, CTRL-C, CTRL-Z, etc all the time.

CTRL-A has never worked for me, in any application. Instead of selecting all, CTRL-A pastes, the same as CTRL-V, only when you use CTRL-A, in addition to pasting, it also makes a system sound, kind of like a knock sound. Out of desperation to identify the sound I looked control panel sounds and listened to all of them, it's not there.

I've never really needed CTRL-A until now because I'm wanting to use a specific application that has no other way to select all except CTRL-A, so I'm now desperate...

Any help will be much appreciated.

I don't know what I did to cause this or how something like this could even happen, but I am hoping someone here might be able to explain and provide a fix. I have tried multiple fixes provided on the net, but none of hem seem to be working.

Currently, on my start menu, the power button icon that used to be there that I could press to show me options like sleep, shutdown, and restart just disappeared, and I can't figure out how to bring it back.

Also, when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the menu is just completely gone!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Does it have something to do with the registry?

I have attached images that illustrate my problem.

Thanks in advance!

Please help! Since a couple of days I have a weird bug in my Windows on my laptop:
the shortcuts Ctrl+C/V don't work for copy/paste, although the right click menu copy/paste do work fine. This however takes time and is annoying..
I suspected it could be a problem with my CTRL button, but Ctrl+A works fine, so that rules it out.

Does anyone have an idea what could have happened?
I have guests using the laptop now and maybe they pressed smth accidentally that locked this up..

Really appreciate your help!

Hello. I encountered a weird problem.

I recently bough Acer Aspire 5734Z with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. When I type CTRL + C or CTRL + V my touchpad stops working for a few seconds. Then it get back to normal. And Except this the functions of ctrl + c and ctrl + v works.

This happens all the time, no matter how much I copy, I can copy nothing doing just the combination and my touch pad freezes.

When playing games as GTA Vice City I have problems using WASD movement at the same time as I adjust the screen(camera) with touch pad. Suddenly lot of combinations stop working, and I have to either stop walking around (WASD combinations) and use touchpad to adjust screen, then stop using touchpad and go back to using WASD.

I hope you understand. I am not very good at explaining things. And I really hope to find a solution to this.

When I did first-run of the laptop, the touchpad didnt have scrolling function working. So I went to acer.com, found my computer model, selected Windows 7 Home Edition and installed the newest touchpad driver 64bit. And it worked. Scrolling working. But freezing problems still occurs. And I think it might be some windows 7 anti multitasking function or something.

Hi all!
I need help to use macros properly. It is my first attempt at doing this, and I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have found this thread which resembles my problem, but I still do not understand what to do

Basically, I have 2 Excel spreadsheets open.
One is List A, the other is List B (Master List).

I have worker codes in List A, and have to find them in the B list to assign them a code (1) in column M.

What I did was go in my first spreadsheet, and selected the first worker code. Then, I started recording my Macro from there.
Ctrl+C worker code
Ctrl+Tab to second spreadsheet
Ctrl+F to open find box
Ctrl+V to paste the worker code copied from before
Close the search box
Cursor now over Worker code, Move over to column M by pressing the RIGHT arrow 12 times (from A to M)
Type "1" and then Enter
Ctrl+Tab to come back to first spreadsheet
Down Arrow to move on to next worker code

However, the Macro looks like this :
Cells.Find(What:="A4WL7CPA3BRX5", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1"

A:Solved: Macro in Excel help! Using CTRL+V inside a CTRL+F

Macro recorder only record specific actions, not generic actions.
So you can't use it to repeat the steps for other cells.
You have to code it specifically in VBA.

As for your case you can have a lookup formula in column M of the Master list to do the check.

eg in cell M12 of List B, type
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)

this goes to your List A first column to count the number of instances the value in cell A12 occurs.
Assuming there is no duplicate, the result is either 1 if found or 0 if not found.

If there are more than one instances in List A, the formula can be adapted to
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)>0)*1

*1 will ensure that the result which is True or False becomes 1 or 0.

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

The XPS 15-9530 keyboard requires that you hold the Function key to do home/end (Function+Left is Home and Function+Right is End).  That works fine, but I have found that if Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End are a bit finicky.  Specifically, the key order I have to press to do a Ctrl+Home is Ctrl then Function then Left.  If I do Function then Ctrl then Left, it only sends a Home and not a Ctrl+Home.  Is there any way to work around this?  It's a bit annoying to have my Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End fail so often while I'm retraining myself.

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

I received our first X1 Tablet this week and have found an issue related to this device's lack of a hardware Windows Button.  My organization's standard group policy enforces CTRL-ALT-DEL at login. When working in tablet mode (without the hardware keyboard connected), there doesn't seem to be a way to get past the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen. On previous tablet devices, like the Lenovo Helix 2, you would simultaneously press the Power + Windows Button to replicate the CTRL-ALT-DEL entry.   I've tried pressing Power + the volume control keys (since those are the only other hardware buttons), but that doesn't do anything.  Apparently Microsoft uses Power + Volume-up on the Surface Pro 4 in order to solve this issue. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this other than disabling the security standard requirement?  Does Lenovo have a driver or firmware update that can be installed to make the volume controls perform this task, like the Surface Pro 4 does?

Hey all, recently pressing my CTRL button began to open Microsoft Outlook, which was extremely disruptive because many video games I play make extensive use of that button and when I press CTRL it minimizes the current program to display outlook. If I press CTRL again, it returns me to MS outlook from whatever app was running. If I press CTRL like 10 times or so over the course of an evening and I go to close outlook, it will re-open 10 times before it closes for good. I don't really use MS office much anyway and I thought I had the CD laying around for a reinstall so I removed MS office, and now when I press CTRL I get a small dialog box saying :

Windows cannot find C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE Make sure you typed the file name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

A new box will open every time I press CTRL and I'm not sure if I somehow bound CTRL to run outlook (??) or if this was a result of some malware. I previously had a malicious program that would run calc.exe every time I pressed the ALT button so I think these 2 things might be related, but I am not sure how to go about fixing this problem. You guys do excellent work for everyone and I was wondering if maybe you had some advice ?

A:Ctrl Button Hooked?

Windows is trying to load Outlook.exe but cannot locate it. You removed the file but there is still a regsitry entry that is telling Windows to to load it when you start up. When Windows loads, it looks for any files associated with registry entries for programs that are set to run at startup. If the file was removed/deleted but not the associated registry entry, Windows will display an error message indicating that the file was not found. You need to remove the related registry entry so Windows stops searching for these programs when it loads. That can usually be resolved using msconfig. However, since you said you had a malicious program that affected calc.exe, you may not have removed the entire infection or there may be other malware present. Windows 7 32bit new install of 2 weeks. No changes that I can think of prior to the login problem.

Windows boots to Ctrl Alt Del and when that is entered a Cancel button appears on the screen. when the cancel button is pressed the Ctrl Alt Del is back.

I have tried the follow to fix the login issue.
Remote Registry connection to create a AutoLogon by adding (DefaultName/Password/Domain) etc. That registry hack worked in that the Ctrl Alt Del window no longer came up but it then went directly to the Cancel button.

Next I tried doing a restore to an earlier date by booting from a Win7 DVD. Results were NO Change.

Then I tried doing a boot repair booting from the Win7 DVD. (and as the problem isn't with the boot, it is with the logon there was NO Change)

Does anyone know a Registry Hack that will remove that Cancle button? Or has anyone come accross this before. There are a couple of other mentions of this problem on Google Search but NO answers.

As all of us that are tech in this business know finding the answer to this problem is really important because you know it is going to happen to one of your clients someday. Our quest must be to find the answer not to just format and reinstall.

Thank you for your help....

Hello everyone! I have having a problem with the power button in the start menu...and I'm sure it's tied to a problem I'm having when I hit ctrl-alt-delete. First, the power button...I only have three options when I click it: log off, switch user, or lock. I cannot restart and I cannot shut down. Similarly, when I hit a ctrl-alt-delete, the only option that comes up is "switch user"...which means I can't start task manager. I'm guessing this has something to do with user rights and privileges...but I'm the only user and I have administrator rights! I've search all over for a solution and I cannot find one. This is my first posting, although i have used some threads in the past to fix problems. may i just start by saying i really appreciate all the help offered on this site by the volunteers. you are providing a great service to all of us with limited computer skills.

here i s my problem:

i just restarted because photoshop would not open. upon logging in, my taskbar is now grey (no open programs show up on it), the start button is missing, and many of my desktop icons have a funky "bitmapp-ish" look top them. Task manager will not open, and when i try to download any programs (like adaware, or links at kelly's korner) the download window flashed for a milisecond and then disappears. i just started using this computer a month or so ago, and had not installed any of the spyware yet, and since i can't download anything now, i could not follow the procedures before posting this. i can't run any of the other apps that require using "run", because i can't get to it (no start button). when i press the "window" key, it does not bring up the start menu, only a very short menu with "xp safety and comfort guide", etc.

i am running windows xp professional on a hp compaq (can't give more specifics because when i choose properties for my computer, it does not show the usual info page)

please help

Hi guys I have a really realllly annoying problem. For some reason when I press the ctrl key on the left hand side of the keyboard, 'My Computer' opens. when i press the right hand Ctrl button, 'Outlook' opens. This happened a while ago, I think after I downloaded some software. I uninstalled the software but the problem remained. It went away by itself after a few months but now it has come back and it is driving me mad!!! Does anyone know what this is all about?

by the way, I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and customising the keys using the Customise Keyboard function in Windows but that doesn't work.

Howdy,I created a post on the "Am I Infected?" thread back on 11/02/2009 and Mark (garmanma) has been helping me. He does not feel I am infected but stated I could always touch base this you kind folks so here I am. My task manager won't come up with ctrl+alt+delete, ctrl+shift+esc, start -> run-> taskmgr, or from right click on the task bar? We tried all kinds of neat little programs to see what was up but to no avail, however we didn't try the HijackThis route so I am hopeful. The previous post can be found at the following link provided (if you're curious as to what solutions have already been explored), http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/top...ml#entry1491790. The DDS and RootRepeal text files are attached as well, thank you so very much for any assistance you can provide. This site is wonderful and your team is the tops! I'm so bummed not having my task manager.

I've just purchased HP Spectre x360 laptop, Canadian version that has a bilingual keyboard. What I didn't realize from the specifications posted online is that the right CTRL button is replaced with a button for | and \ which is just a duplicate of an existing button. My guess is that it is for extra characters when using the French layout. I don't use it however, and would much prefer to use it as a regular right CTRL button (it's much easier to use CTRL-arrow shortcuts with the CTRL that is located right next to the arrow buttons).  I've changed the keyboard and language settings to US English, no luck. Tried KeyTweaks and it doesn't appear to help either - it does the remap, I reboot, the button still works as |\. Is there a way to restore this button to its original functionality? Thanks.

Process of elimination. Try uninstalling Google toolbar, reboot, and then test again.

I have this problem with Firefox AGAIN! This time I can't search.... so when I press "CTRL+F" the "Find" box comes out

BUT when I type something into this box that I KNOW is on that page (example: "Help Desk") it won't find it... Firefox seems to NOT find ANYTHING (any word)

Now when I try to "find/search" with IE or Firefox on any other computer it does work... any ideas what may be wrong 'cause it's annoying switching browsers just for this

BTW I DID uninstall and reinstall the program (just through add/remove programs) and I have winxp home media edition

A:Not Being Able To "ctrl+f" In Firefox

When you search for a word or phrase, are you using quotation marks? If so, it won't find it unless quotation marks are part of what you're looking for.

Also, if the word or phrase is on a tab, such as the tabs on this page: Home, Forums, Tutorials etc. it won't find them; I think because those words are part of an image.

my left ctrl key somehow was mapped to open web browser. ive got both ie7 and firefox. itll open whichever is default. i opend the firefox icon properties and the dialogue box dosent show any shortcuts (NONE) this started happening right after i installed some "security" updates from windows. there were a **** ton of them. i tried to go online to get a new driver for the keyboard but apparently micro inovations kb400i was made specifically for windows xp and no driver was made. instead it is supposed to use a windows compatible driver. anybody know if a windows update could have changed the mapping? whats weird also is if i push the ctrl key and hold it i can still use copy past search find history etc

A:left CTRL key opens firefox

Here is a free keyboard mapping program

You can change your layout.
