ThinkPad Yoga FN keys

Q: ThinkPad Yoga FN keys

Hi, I completely reinstalled windows 8.1 pro on my ThinkPad Yoga. After that I installed all drivers including updates provided by Microsoft and Lenovo (using Lenovo system updater 5). But I can't use all FN keys (meaning the special functions like opening the windows 8 settings pane bar...) Also the orange led is lighted up on the F1 key (I guess this should indicate that my speakers are muted - but this led is always on). What should I do or what do I have to install in addition to use all FN special keys including the correct indication of the mute-LED?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download the necessary driver package for you.

You can change the volume in software, but neither the volume +- on the keyboard, nor the volume rocker on the side of the machine will change the volume. That is, UNLESS you open the task manager, and then click on the services tab. As long as the focus is on the services tab, then the volume on the keyboard and the rocker will both work. If you click on another window, or if you click on a tab other than the services tab, both sets of buttons stop working. Also, both sets of buttons work fine in Linux.

Hello all, I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20FY0002US), which was purchased 14 months ago, so it is just out of warrenty. It worked great, although I only use it when I travel. Starting from a few days ago, some of keys of it are not working. These keys are near the edges of the keyboard, such as "1", "q", "a", "z", the ESC key, the windows key, the space key, and the backspace key. The keys in the middle as wel as the function keys are fine.   I believe that It is not an issue related to the windows, but the problem exists even in the BIOS. I tried to update the BIOS and the drivers, but no help. I also have disconnected and reconnected the ribbon cables of the keyboard, no help as well. Any help/suggestions? Thanks a lot.

I could feel that the arrow keys on my machine were a little wobbly from the beginning, but now both of them pop out very easily.  I?ve inspected the black key cap itself, as well as the white plastic clips on the mounting bracket that the key cap attaches to. There doesn?t appear to be damage to either part, but the keys won?t stay firmly in place. Tried carefully reattaching it according to guides from laptopreplacement key,  but to no avail.  Wondering if others have had this issue and how it was resolved. Laptop is 5 months old and gently used. Bought the machine in the U.S., but working is South Korea currently, so not sure how difficult getting warranty service will be here or if it?s possible.

On my Thinkpad Yoga S1, the keys t, y, backspace, enter, caplock, and left shift are suddenly not working. This seems to be a common problem on lenovo computers, but the lenovo forum administrator closed the only thread that attempted to address this without any solution. The lenovo admin said that too many diferent models were involved. I don't understand why these exact specific keys are affected on so many Lenovo models. Lenovo has no solution, and will not support a thread to work towards one. The Microsoft store already replaced my keyboard under warrenty over a year ago, but the YTP S1 is now out of warrenty. This does not seem to be a hardware problem given the relatively recent Keyboard replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wont buy another Lenovo if this problem cant be solved. I've had tremndous problems with this computer and have found Lenovo to be unhelpful/unresponsive. This was an expensive computer when it was purchased.

It's currentlystuck on the spacebar and I'm having a hardtime typing this message. It usually gets a bit betterif I put it back in tablet mode and help itgodown while getting it back to "laptop" mode, but it doesn't completely solve it.Does any of you have this issue? How do you solve it? Do I need to send it to a repair center? Thank you. P.S: I deliberately didn't correct any typing mistakes the keyboard mademe do so you know how annoying it is. I've had my TPY for a little over a year without any issues, but today I lost the ability to use the following keys: Backspace, Windows, Left-Shift, T, Y, Tab, Capslock, [, ]  in addition to some of the function keys. Using the onscreen keybaord or an external usb keyboard works just fine. I am unable to use the tab key at the BIOS screen, so it appears to be a hardware issue. This seems to be a common problem for these keys in particular for various Lenovo models and even some Dells. I have tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers as suggested in other posts, and I have tried reseating the keyboard connection according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxHKvpI8Wvc I bought this unit from the MS store with only a 1 year warranty (which is now up), so I'm not sure what to do. I can try replacing the keyboard but it appears others have had only limited success with replacement. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Hi everyone, The problem happened unexpectedly, i.e., I didn't install any software, didn't update the BIOS, didn't change the hardware. Just one morning after the laptop booted as usual (in Linux), the problem appeared and keeps on appearing every morning ever since. The problem: each key on the column "9-o-l-." when pressed started to activate (also) another key on the keyboard: "9" activates F11, "o" increases the audio volume,  "l" mutes the audio speaker, and "." mutes the microphone. This is even visible on the keyboard LEDs "Speaker muted" and "Microphone muted."The problem appears consistently in both Windows and Linux, and even before any OS boots (on the BIOS/Setup screen). However, after the laptop works for about an hour, the problem disapears (i.e., the keys don't activate other keys) and it does not appear until the next time I boot on the next day. Hello,How can I get the home and end keys near the arrow keys on my keyboard without losing page up and page down?I'm a power screen reader user and use the home and end keys once every 5 minutes and I use the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. This means there is a whole lot of moving my hand from the arrow keys to the top of the keyboard. After a day of using my new laptop, my arm is starting to hurt from moving from the bottom to the top of the keyboard so much. What most manufacturers do is have fn+left be home and fn+right be end. They also have fn+up be page up and fn+down be page down. I would love this! Currently the page up and page down keys are right above the arrow keys. FN + page up and down being mapped to home and end would be great as well. I can't figure out how to map fn keystrokes using something like Auto Hot Key though. I would be OK with swapping the home and end keys with the page up and down keys, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Auto Hot Key does not work 100% of the time and I need this functionality 100% of the time. What method would be the best for me to get home and end by the arrow keys?

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Hi all, i did something really stupid today. I wanted to clean underneath my thinkpad's keyboard, but i couldnt figure out how. unlike my friend's keyboard, i couldnt simply take out the keys and wipe underneath. So i decided to use a vacuum cleaner.

I just didnt know what strength to put it at.

Now, i've got my caps lock sucked up into my vacuum cleaner. After recovering it from the vacuum's bag (messy stuff) and cleaning it, i can see that it isnt cracked or broken anywhere, both at the hinge(on the laptop) or the key itself. But for the love of god i have no idea how to fix it back in. It isnt just "push it in and click". Anyone help please?

Hey, Just a got a brand new Thinkpad 540-E. So far this CPU runs like a beast(with a new SSD installed). I have one minor issue though... GOAL:: Make the F1-F12 keys function without having to press Fn first. So I've tried the three tips I've come across online. Here is what happens: 1. BIOS(ThinkpadSetup): I only get the option to switch the Fn and Ctrl key. There are no option in my BIOS to do anything else with the keyboard/mouse settings. 2. Holding down the Fn key for 30 sec to 1 minute: Nothing happens. I even tried to do a three minute press and hold. I had a blast, but nothing came out of that neither. 3. Entering the keyboard settings in Win 7 manually: So I have no trouble entering the keyboard settings window, but mine looks extreemly limited. I don't see any options looking similar to what I see suggested on this forum.  In fact I see no options to do anything in there besides updating the driver. I hope you guys can help me out! Thanks a lot:-)

Just curious, why is the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga I7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, FHD about $1,000 more than the similarly equipped commercial Lenovo 910?

Is it the ThinkPad brand name? The eraser nubbin? The 2 combined?

Just curious.

I've got a friend who needs a new laptop. She likes the touch/fold aspect of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga. Do you all think she would be happy with the commercial Yoga 910?

Any real reason to get the new plain FHD ThinkPad X1 Yoga instead of the similarly equipped commercial Yoga available at Best Buy besides spending an extra $1000 for the ThinkPad brand name?

I've owned 6 various ThinkPads since 2011 FWIW. I get it, they're cream of the crop. But I kinda got sticker shock when I just priced out a plain FHD (and we need nothing more) X1 Yoga. About  $2,800, wow!

Best to everyone...

A:Why is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga $1,000 more than a similar Yoga 910?

@Jelks, The biggest difference I see between the X1 Yoga (2nd) and the Yoga 910 is active pen support which seems to be missing from the 910. You could use a capacitive stylus, but expect fingertip resolution, not pinpoint, and no pressure-sensitivity. Fewer USB ports: no HDMI or MicroSD; no Thunderbolt. No TPM module, if you need to store encrypted creditials, e.g., for BitLocker. Not sure about battery life; they claim up to 9 hours of local video for the 910 vs. up to 15 of MobileMark for the X1. Not an apple-to-apple comparison. You're not going to get the (soon to be patched, at least for now) security hole that is Intel's vPro management tech. You may not get Windows 10 Pro, possibly just Home (but you could always give Microsoft the money to upgrade if you need BitLocker or Remote Access). You're not going to get all the "mil-spec" design and testing etc, but if it's a personal machine, you're probably going to avoid abusing it. As you suggest, the "wave" keyboard -- including the trackpoint "eraser nubbin" -- is definitely going to be more expensive on the ThinkPad than the plain Yoga keyboard. I used two generations of ThinkPads (T61p and W520), but about 3 years ago I switched to a Dell XPS 13. A year or so ago, I ordered a X1 Yoga 1st gen for my wife and she likes it very much, so I am pretty familiar with the design and capabilities. TLDR: I think most people would be happy with the 910 vs. X1 unless they want the active pen. Als... I recently got a used thinkpad L540. The previous owner apparently had to redownload windows 10 while trying to change start up setting for using linux. I'm using windows 10 on it.I did the function (fn) and control key swap in BIOS and everything was working fine for a while, but one day, most of the hot keys stopped working whenever I have the function lock on (which I like to keep it on to use the usual function keys). For hot keys such as mute and lowering volume, whenever I press those keys with the function key (which is originally the control key, since I did fn-ctrl swap), to use the hot keys while on function lock, I get a beep sound and nothing happens. I have swapped the function key and control key back to how it was, and it wasn't a problem, but I really don't like the function and control key position in this laptop, and use the usual function keys often enough that this problems bothers me. Oh and there is no problems when I have the function lock off. I've tried downloading the keyboard driver for thinkpad, which it seems like this computer was missing, and this problems still continues

((Sorry if this is in the wrong topic. I'm very new to this.)) So about a few hours earlier I spilt some water on the top part of my keyboard - so I turned it off, took out everything plugged in to it such as the mouse, charger and battery and i left it open to dry. I returned an hour later to find that my L button didn't work as well as it did earlier (it didn't appear as much when pressed.) and at times it would consistently spam the number 9 when it wasn't even being pressed. I got someone to help me, and they blew into the keys and got rid of the dust underneath. So now I log on again, and now here's the strangest part: I have Ubuntu 17.04, and it made the same sound it makes when you experience a 'fan error' on your computer - if you get a fan error, you hear a beeping sound and your computer shuts down again, for me, it just continues its normal startup. When I get to my login screen, none of my keys work at all now, and neither does part of my wired mouse (I can move it, but I can't click.) Which I think is strange because it wasn't even near the water spillage in the first place and only the TOP part of my keyboard was covered with water, yet other parts are affected by this. Do you think I've just been an idiot and accidentally fried my entire keyboard, or could this be something more malicious? Or maybe I should just get a new computer? Please help! I really need to get my candidate notebook and my assignment finished by June, and if I can't log on by then I'll lose... Read more

My thinkpad laptop keys randomly remapped themselves while I was in the midst of using the computer. They Fn key assigned itself to the mute key (labeled Media Mute E0_20 in SharpKeys) and the left CTRL remapped itself to the Fn key role (Special: Wake (or Fn) E0_63) in SharpKeys. I have no idea how this happened, and have (obviously) used sharp keys to no avail, restarted in BIOS and verified that the Lenovo FN key swap was disabled, and even gone so far as to reformat the entire laptop and wipe it clean. Still doesn't fix the issue. They keys themselves work fine (in their remapped roles). Please let me know if you have a solution that will work. Laptop is under warranty so I can ship it back if necessary to get fixed, too.

Given that you've tried re-installing already, it probably isn't a software/Windows issue.Have you tried updating the BIOS to the same or newer version in case the BIOS/EC corrupted itself somehow?

Hello- This is the first time I've needed to post here - I wouldn't say I'm an advanced user, but I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing. So please bear with me. My specific problem is that, seemingly following one of the attached (screenshot) windows updates, I can no longer use the Fn+F keys properly. Some of them do work (I can adjust brightness, hibernate), but I cannot for instance open WiFi controls (Access Connections) with Fn+F5, Communications Utility with Fn+F6, or connect to a projector with Fn+F7. Also, the accompanying screen overlay isn't right. The manual volume adjust button doesn't show the volume change on screen (same for mute button); neither does Fn+F8/F9 for brightness; ditto for CAPS-LOCK key, so I don't know whether caps lock is on or not! But these buttons/key-combinations do at least work. I have spent a long time trying to fix this following for example treads like below: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/E530-special-keys-FN-F4-FN-F5-etc-are-n... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T530-Fn-keys-and-quot-On-Screen-Display-... Updating HotKeys feature integration manually did not help. However, when I did this via a full scan with Lenovo Solutions Centre it did something (e.g. screen overlay came back briefly for brightness controls Fn+F8/F9, but has since gone again after re-starting). But still nothing for opening WiFi controls, Communication Utility, caps lock,... Read more

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.
