Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Q: Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

This is a problem that I've seen a lot of things about, but none that actually match my situation.

I recently got a new computer with windows 7 premium home edition on it, and I have a file that I wish to copy into another folder, but it will not allow me. If I attempt to run, move or delete the file, I get a message telling me that I need adminstrator privilages to do the action. I have figured out that it is because I do not have ownership of this file. I have attempted to change the ownership through the security tab of the properties, but I do not have access to it. Instead I get this message:

"You do not have permission to view this object's security properties"

Where it tells me who the current owner is, the box simply says "Unable to display current owner." I obviously need to take ownership of the file, but I can't find out how. It would be much appreciated if anyone had some ideas?

I am an administrator, and for whatever reason home edition does not allow to me to use the default administrator account which is the only idea that I've seen to fix this problem. This not a file that I took from my old computer either.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64, custom built system
Two physical drives, C:\ and D:\, formatted NTFS

Computer crashed awhile back as a result of a power outage. When it came back up, everything seemed fine except that I can no longer access the root of D:\. In Windows Explorer, I can type in a path to a folder in the root of D:\, such as "D:\Photos", but if I try to display the root of D:\ I get "Access Denied."

In Windows Explorer, D:\ is displayed with no 'size / free' information. Any attempt to access D:\, whether with Windows Explorer or Command Line or via Disk Management always results in "Access Denied."

Going to Properties of D:\, Security tab, I see the message, "You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings." The only button available there is "Advanced", and clicking it brings me to the Permissions, Auditing, Owner, and Effective Permissions tabs. Each of those tabs simply says "You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings", except for the Owner tab which says "Unable to display current owner."

I have tried the Registry file and tutorials at the beginning of this thread, I have tried takeown and icacls commands from an Administrator-level command prompt, and I have tried another Registry mod called "Grant Admin Full Control". Nothing has worked so far.

I am having many problems with Vista since I loaded it, most critical is the error message ‘unable to display current owner’ when I try to access directories that have my files in them. I first get ‘access denied’ and when I try to see who owns it or change it I get the for above error. When I use Word and open files they only open in ‘read only’ and I have to save them to my desktop and use Computer and cut/paste it back into the file.

Any ideas?

A:Unable To Display Current Owner

You should be able to change file permissions by right-clicking on the file, Properties---Security---Advanced and set yourself the owner of the file then give yourself full control of the file. I too had the same issue with Office documents that I had created using Office on my XP install opening as read-only, which was fixed by altering the ownership & permissions. The "Unable to display current owner" I believe is because it was an XP user account that created the file.

I can't access my second drive. In 'advanced security settings' for the whole drive - the Permission Tabs lists 2 accounts - SYSTEM and Administrators. But Owner Tab says 'unable to display current owner'.
In this tab you have the option to change owners - here's where I get stuck. The displayed option is only me (an administrator). I want to ad SYSTEM or Administrators for the whole drive - as I cannot access it.
You can then edit the list of users here - and magically - it lists Administrators and System as options. But then won't let me add them. Further more - this tab shows the current owner as Administrators. This Vista seems as mixed up as I. Any tips for this conflict plz?

Hi members.

A few months ago, I downloaded Google Drive but I don't have any use for it. So I uninstalled the program but each time I switch on my laptop, a Google Drive window appears. I wanted to delete the Google Drive folder but it doesn't allow me. I went to Properties > Security > Advanced, then tried to change the owner but a window keeps popping up showing: "If you have just taken ownership of this object, you will need to close and reopen this object's properties before you can view or change permissions" or it shows me the image below...

I am accessing another computer by read/write rights to specific folders.
Today, I was at the host computer and I saw a file, that I deleted before, still there.
When I was permanently deleting it, it was going off; but when I refresh, it was coming back.
When I tried to just delete - recycle - it, it told me that I didn't have the rights to do it.
When I checked the security options from the properties, it showed the owner as "Unable to display current owner" and didn't let me to change the owner or delete the file.
What can I do in these kind of situations when current owner cannot be displayed or changed?
What could be causing this?
(I understand the file can come from/to host computer, remote computer, and one of the external drives which may have a different owner -remote computer controls all the external drives, just some of the external drives has a creator owner in permissions also)

I save a lot of files as PDFs. Recently, I saved a financial document to PDF and it seems to be secured somehow. It's a pdf. Adobe complains opening it, complaining "There was an error opening this document. Access denied." Instead of opening it with a right-click, I tried starting Adobe and selecting the file. The message was similar but different - "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission."

I noticed from the file properties that instead of a user owning the file, there is a zero value for the owner ID.

I try to change the owner using the following steps:Right click the file and select Properties
Select Security tabGet prompted "To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object's security properties. Do you want to continue?"

I select Continue - to elevate to admin privilegesI get the Owner tab message:
"You do not have permission to view this object's security properties. To view its security properties, you can try taking ownership of the object. ....
To try taking ownership of the object, select an account from the last, and then click OK."
Also note that under Current owner: it reports

I've encountered an issue where I am unable to delete, rename, or overwrite existing files on my computer, at least with certain extensions (.dll, .exe). This happens, for example, when I try to install an upgrade of a program -- the installer cannot finish the upgrade because it cannot replace the existing files. I also cannot delete the existing/old files manually, because I get a permissions error. Screenshots of two sample errors are attached -- these are from tonight when I tried to upgrade my MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. I use Avast Antivirus and it does not show any viruses. MalwareBytes also reports no malware. I am using the only account on my computer, the administrator account. I also ran a registry cleaner (CCleaner) and HiJackThis, but nothing seems amiss. The problem began a few weeks ago.

Oddly, if I hit "Retry" enough times in the installer -- maybe 10 or 15 times in a row -- it eventually overwrites the file. So, I AM able to install updates, but I have to continually press "Retry" over and over for each file.

Here's what I've tried so far: (1) Disabling UAC; (2) Running an installer as administrator; (3) Right-clicking individual files in Windows Explorer, selecting "Properties" -> Security (When I do this, all permissions appear proper -- System, Administrators, and Users all have full access).

Thanks for anyone's help!

Another question about file ownerships - I tried to do a backup once, during an OS re-install, many files came back garbled, with file names switched around, many picture files had a file size but would not open, even if I changed the extensions, etc.

It seems easier to just copy files to an external, then copy back, than doing the windows backup. Is this what other's have found?

Hi,

I just tried to install the latest iTunes update, but keep getting an error when it tries to access the C:\Program Files\iPod folder.

When I try to access the iPod folder directly through Windows Explorer, I get "Access is denied".

The same happens when logged in with the system administrator account.

When I right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security, the Current owner field shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow either of the listed administrator accounts to take ownership.

When I choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner, the Current owner field also shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow me to Edit it either.

I've tried opening the Command Prompt as the administrator, and deleting the folder, but it won't allow me to do that either.

Any ideas on how to forcefully take ownership and/or delete this folder?

Hello

I hope someone can help with this. I borrowed a dvd from a friend and tried to watch it on my dvd player. It showed as a data disc so I thought I'd be clever and open it on my pc instead and convert it somehow...

Big mistake! The disc has one vob file which I started to copy onto my desktop - it copied half of it then froze so I had to close it down and restart my pc. My pc then took an age to restart and I cannot delete the vob file from my desktop! It is showing as 4 GB but when I try to send it to the recycle bin it shows as 0 bytes and freezes during the recycling!

Starting up and shutting down is now incredibly slow. It takes around 15 minutes until I can click on anything on my desktop.

I have no idea what to do. I tried restoring my pc to an earlier point today (pre nasty vob file) but it was still there when I rebooted. Also, Avast seems to be randomly switching itself off and I am even unable to run Housecall to see if there's anything malicious going on - it tells me I don't have Java (although I did) so I successfully updated to the latest version and it STILL says I don't have it. I can't even scan using the plug-in as it mentioned something about not being able to obtain the info..? Another odd thing is that the little icons that sit next to urls are mismatched. I have the RAC icon for Google for example! All this has happened today.

My OS is Windows Vista.

If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful!!

Hi. I hope someone is able to help me with this. I've spent 3 days trying to disinfect my PC but to no avail.

Problem:
One week ago, Spybot reported a Trojan. I ran both Spybot and McAfee in Safe Mode and I thought I had got rid of it. However, each time I connected to the internet, Trojans kept being reported. I tried to clean the PC but they keep coming back.

PC Setup:
Windows version Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
Firewall, Anti-virus etc Kapersky Internet Security 7.0.0.125 trial version.
Previously used McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 8.0 which has been uninstalled.
Other related software installed:
HijackThis 2.0.2.
Spybot Search & Destroy
VundoFix

Kaspersky reports and cleans the Trojans but again they return when I log on to the internet, Kaspersky keeps reporting C:\Windows\Explorer.exe detected modification of of riskware 'Hidden data sending'. Also, most times that I log on, the dial up box automatically opens.

Basically, the problem is that I have identified the problem file but I don't know what is running it and I can't delete it.

I hope you are able to help.

Peter.

Here's how I tried to fix the problem:

1. Cleaned all temp files using both cleanmgr and ATF Cleaner

At first we were telling the client they didn't copy the files correctly. However, I discovered that if I put the CD in at someone else's computer, and use Explorer, more current files are displayed. So it's just my computer that isn't displaying the current CD contents.

This has us completely baffled! Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

A:Display of D: doesn't show current file

It could be that the software used to write the files to the CD uses a different UDF driver than is available on your PC. Try installing a few UDF drivers. (different software may use proprietary udf drivers) One other thing, check the PC it reads on and see if there is a CD writing program on it, if there is it's a good bet that you may need the UDF driver from the software manufacturer of that program, installing that software generally installs the driver as well.

Need to share folders across a network such that specific users (defined by me) have permission to read, create new sub-folders + files and modify them, but not delete anything. I set up file sharing using settings under Advanced button in Security tab: ALLOW for everything except Delete Subfolders & Files, Delete, Change Permissions and Take Ownership. These are under DENY. I have tried with and without inherit permissions, yet the users I have given these permissions to are able to create files and folders but cannot change the name from "default folder" or "new text document.txt". If I remove the DENY then they do have permission to rename, but also to delete, which I don't want to give. AM running Win XP Pro SP3.
Any help appreciated!

What's the difference between "modify" and "delete"? Seems to me that if they can do one, they can do the other.

You might try File Unlocker http://www.askvg.com/unlocker-1-8-8-released/

Otherwise you could use the command prompt to delete it.

Or boot up with an Ubuntu LIVE CD and see if you can delete it.

A few days ago I had some issues with my internet connection in games, I therefore searched the internet and posted in some forums for some help, I was advised to carry out a few tests with some software, since doing this it now seems that I have lost my user privileges/access to image files and certain software.

I am unable to open any image files on my PC as I get the following error 'Window Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location'.

I am also unable to open Google Chrome, and tried re-downloading it only to be prompted that I do not have permissions.

These are the things I have tried to resolve the problem;

- I have tried doing a system restore, this fails every time no matter which restore point I choose.
- I have tried doing an Anti-Virus scan to ensure there is no malicious software and the result came up all clean after a thorough scan.
- I have checked the security permissions on the files I am trying to access to ensure it is set to 'Full control'
- I have tried installing a 'Take Ownership' button so that when I right click on folders/files I can take ownership of them. I have tried using this on all the folders on my machine but still cannot access them.

Things you may need to know:

- I only have one user account on this machine, this is the account that I use and had full admin rights.
- It seems the only affected things are opening image files and opening Google Chrome. Other soft... Read more

Hi,
I'm new to Windows 7.

I'm still trying to master the file permissions.. I need some help and I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out.

I have a folder with mp3s (created with my old Windows XP system). I've included this mp3s folder in the "my music" library and then I inspected the folder and took ownership of it together with everything it contains (following instructions I found on the Net).

Nevertheless, when I'm trying to delete or move a file I get the message that I need to provide administrator permission! But I thought I am both administrator and owner...

Also, when listen to the songs with WinAmp, it seems I cannon save any song data. I get: Cannot save metadata: Error opening file.

I suppose, it's an aspect of the very same problem.

What am I missing?

thanx.

A:I need admin permission to delete/move file (but I'm both admin/owner)

Take a look on the properties of the folder see if you have an unblock button . If you do click on it .

Alright, so what I'm trying to do is list all the shortcuts & folders in the start menu and list all the shortcuts & folders on the desktop and put this into a text file. The reason is to get a full list of programs our teachers use before we re-image their machine and not all of their programs are listed in add/remove programs and not all programs make a folder in Program Files, that is why I'm trying to do it in this roundabout way. What I have so far is this:

@echo off
mkdir "p:\Program List"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Start Menu.txt"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Desktop.txt"

This works perfectly but the only problem is the file has these:
c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\
c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\

before each entry in the text file. Is there an easy way to remove these lines so the text files are easier to read? I've checked other sources and can't figure out how to get this to work...

A:[SOLVED] Delete text from .txt file in a batch file

Open the files in Notepad, click Edit, then replace, and enter the string C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ and replace it with nothing (no entry).

I had a folder on my Desktop that just won't delete. I tried deleting it and moving it to another location. It deleted everything within the folder, yet the folder still remained.

I've been having the problem of my Desktop not updating when files/folders are deleted, so I have to manually refresh after a delete to show it gone. Well, the folder decided to stick around. I tried Renaming, Deleting, changing Folder Permissions, Reboot of the Computer.....Nothing seems to help.

If I try to open the folder, I get a "Location is Not Available" along with the "Access Is Denied" error. Going to Properties>Security prompts me that I don't have permission to view or edit permission settings. Under Advanced says the same thing and for Owner it says "Unable to Display Current Owner."

I'm running Windows 7

I have tried looking as some of my questions seem silly most of the time - I looked at the link - Take Ownership Shortcut

I hope that I have done it correctly.

I have trialled it on my desktop and it comes up with a CMD screen and then moves the file. When I extracted the .reg it warned me that it would alter some .tmp files - I read the tutorial and I thought that what I did was fine. I know not to take ownership of Windows 7.

I hope the following information assists and I just want assurance that I did it correctly or if I should have tried another means.

I would rather know that I have done something or I will try extracting to remove ... Read more

So my Avast has been acting up lately (can't bring it up) so I decided to uninstall it. Its folder on the C Drive was still there though, so I tried deleting it but I can't as it keeps giving me the 'Folder Access Denied' message where it says 'You require permission from Users to make changes to this folder'.

So I go to the advanced security settings for the folder and set 'Users (****-pc\Users)' as owner, but it still says that my access level is 'Read & execute' only, not 'Full control'. I still can't delete the folder; what the heck is happening?
