Internet Explorer open in task manager but not open and firewall disabled

Q: Internet Explorer open in task manager but not open and firewall disabled

Hi All,
I've been racking my brain trying to see what is going on and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. So I was hoping that someone on here might be able to help. Here's my situation. As I mentioned in the title something is going wrong with internet explorer and it opens in the task manager but is not open on the screen (although I do often see a little flash of something like a window popping up every now and then but only a flash then it's gone). Also I will click on normal links (like cnn.com after searching google for "cnn" and it will send me to some random website, usually trying to sell me something). Finally after some invesitgation it looks like there is a false iexplorer.exe file on my computer that got there somehow, and I think is causing issues. Oh and my windows firewall and symantec have been disabled. I have scanned with malwarebytes, adaware, spybot, and a few others with some each of them finding things but nothing has been fixed.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,
Below is the DDS from the preparation guide I found. I have the Attach file as well but the file says not to post unless asked to do so. So I'll wait until that I guess.

Preferred Solution: Internet Explorer open in task manager but not open and firewall disabled

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

Hello! Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums!
My name is Georgi and and I will be helping you with your computer problems.
Before we begin, please note the following:
I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.
Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
Instructions that I give are for your system only!
Please do not run any tools until requested ! The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
Please perform all steps in the order received. If you can't understand something don't hesitate to ask.
Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. I will not help you if you do not follow my instructions.
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I believe I have a virus, but have no clue how to stop it. Today I put a SD card in my computer's card reader, but it never read the card. I clicked the drive it was supposed to be in and my computer froze. Ctrl Alt Del didn't work, so I restarted my computer manually. The computer's start up took around 20 minutes to complete. I tried opening AVG Anti Virus Free but it won't open. My computer's firewall was shut off, and it wouldn't even let me access the firewall's settings. Mal Ware Bites and SUPERAntiSpyware Free do actually open, but I am unable to update the definitions. When I try updating definitions, Mal Ware Freezes and won't close, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free tells me it can't close because "it is locked in the system". Please help me out.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. When I attempt to use Ctr+Alt+Delete, I get the "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator" message. Having read up about this problem, I gather that when this happens on the administrator's account, it is likely due to a virus or malware or something.

If try to Run regedit or msconfig, they both open in Notepad, showing encrypted-like text (I am running XP Home Edition). Also, "Folder Options" in the Tools menu is gone.

From what I understand (perhaps), something altered settings in my registry and has disallowed me from using regedit to correct them. Does this sound about right?

A:Help. 80+ Processes on task manager. Can't open internet browser.

Read other 7 answers

This morning while attempting to run internet explorer out of my desktop, not the windows 8 app, the browser wouldn't open. It was just blank & unresponsive. So I checked the task manger and noticed that 4-6 internet explorers were running at one time, while I had open none of them. I encountered this problem at my previous job so I knew it was a problem. AVG picked nothing up, I didn't expect it to. But the next thing I did was find your thread about how to possible solve this, and went right ahead to following the steps. I made up to step 3. But DDS won't run saying that it can't run in "compatibility mode". I turned off my anti-virus. Closed IE. But this error keeps coming up?

Thanks in advance for your help =)

None of them can get a few seconds into the scan without terminating such as MBAM and SpyNoMore (from what SpyNoMore showed while scanning, I saw the file that disabled the task manager and "Advanced Virus Remover", so if I could somehow get that to do a complete scan, I'm pretty sure it could work.)I came across a program that did, however, do a complete scan. It was called A-Squared. When I began to quarantine the files, though, the window where it says there has been a fatal error and Windows must terminate with the countdown from 1:00 occurs. After that, If I boot up my computer again, explorer.exe is gone AND the task manager is disabled. So I had to boot it up in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Hi, sorry if I started another topic but it seems no one was able to reply in my previous topic so I thought I might post up a new one, I hope it's alright. Here's my problem.

I've got something that keeps disabling my task manager, registry editor, Windows Firewall and the Safeboot mode. I already tried running SuperAntiSpyware and MBAM in normal and safe mode but it keeps coming back.

This is an office computer and we have files here that I don't want to mess up, so I hope I don't get to do a full reformat.

Here's the description of the computer:

Windows XP
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Btw I don't have internet connection prior to the problem at hand in this computer so I'm using another PC to connect here.

Here's a summary of what happened:

It all started when I enabled the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network and access a shared folder. Then that's where I noticed that the Task manager, Regeditor and Firewall got disabled. I run a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG 9.0 and was able to get results. I got a Sality_Y/X (not sure if it was Y or X) during the AVG scan, I searched it and found out that it's very nasty.

Run HJT and getting the result of disabled Regedit. I tried fixing that but it still keeps coming back.

I got it to boot in Safe Mode and I had AVG scan it, but I cut that scan short coz I was asked to do something on the computer, I stopped the scan, reboot it to normal mode and g... Read more

Hi there,

I posted a thread in 'Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help' back in April about problems I was having with my laptop (http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...d-etc-etc.html). To summarise, the main problems I'm having are...

- Windows Firewall is disabled and when I double click on 'Windows Firewall' in the Control Panel a message comes up saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?". Then I can enable Firewall, but on rebooting it reverts back to being automatically disabled.
- The taskbar is often grey and old-style rather than blue.
- When I try and play music in Media Player it says 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly'. I reinstalled the driver from Acer's website and now I here the usual beeps, clicks and the Windows start up sound but still can't play audio. Similar problems with Itunes, and audio from Youtube.
- I can't write CDs.
- When I double click on System in Control Panel instead of the System page coming up, a box comes up saying 'Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Run a DLL as an App. Publisher: Microsoft Corporation.'

I still can open the window using main IE menu. Hotkey hint written next to the menu item is still Ctrl-J.

I have this problem that whenever I login to WinXP SP2, my explorer won't start - that is my task bar and my desktop icons won't show. I thought I could start it using Task Manager but when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it says that I don't have access permission and to contact Administrator, but I am the Administrator. I am thinking that access to my registry is disabled too, but I can't check it because I don't have access to Explorer or Task Manager.
My belief is that a virns or trojan of some sort has changed my registry. I will try to boot in safe-mode and see what happens.

On all the profiles (5 total) explorer.exe doesn't automatically run when i start up the computer and I have to go to the task manager, start new task and type in explorer. On my profile when i try to start the task manager it says that it has been disabled by the administrator. I have slaved the hard drive with another and ran symantec antivirus and it quarantined alot of adware and some viruses. Normally i would just reformat and start over but there are some pictures my wife took of her family in Honduras and some of them are no longer alive and i really need to get to them. I dont care if the problem gets fixed if there is a way to access the pictures from one of the other profiles but when i tried it said access denied. Really need help and fast.

A:task manager disabled and explorer problems

Why don't you access the pictures from the computer that you've slaved the drive to. Just drill down through the slaved drive into Docs and Settings -> <username> -> My docs -> My pics and then copy them over to your hard drive.

After the last window's update on Dec. 18th failed, my computer behaves strangely. I tried to restore the system to before the update, but now I can not open window's update. In normal mode, the window update window freezes when opened. In safe mode, window update does not even open. Also my task manager does not open in normal mode. A taskmanager icon appears on the system tray, but the task manager does not show up. Also the wireless network manager freezes when I try to access it in normal mode. The system takes longer than usual to load in normal mode. The system also frequently crashes while starting up in normal mode, only a blank screen with a mouse arrow in the middle appears. When I shut the computer down, it freezes in log out screen, so I have to manually shut it down. The defragment also will not run.
There is serveral cases of service hang report in my problem log involving Nlasvc, SstpSvc, WinHttpAutoProxySvc.
I'm sure I don't have any malware in my system left since I checked it through the virus removal/hijackthis forum as well as multiple virus scans, still the problem persist.

A:Can not open window's update/ task manager/ network manager and can not shut down

Hi boman,

Some questions:

You said you are sure you don't have any malware left. Did you have malware? And did you have malware when you tried to do the update which wasn't sucessful?

Do you have a cd with your computer?

Which Antivirus program are you using?

Recently I've had an issue where for no reason my task bar wont respond and the task manager wont open, both times I had to force a shutdown and reboot.

The first time I was watching a movie, after the movie I hit pause and went to open Firefox through a shortcut on the task bar and got nothing, this computer can be slow at times as its age is catching up with itself so I thought to just wait a few seconds and try again, still nothing. Then I went back to the media player and noticed the media player was fully responding and had no issue, using Alt+Tab I could switch to other programs or folders and they worked fine but the task bar was completely locked. I tried Ctrl Alt Delete to try ending the explorer process then starting it up again as I figured that might help but after waiting for a couple minutes it never came up! I hit the keys again and still nothing waiting and trying over and over nothing came up so I ended up having to force a shutdown and cold boot.

The 2nd time it happened I literally had no programs running except Comodo and the computer had been left alone for about an hour, when I returned the task bar was again locked up and the task manager would not show. Thanks for reading all this and any help on the subject is much appreciated!

i've been having a lot of virus issues with my computer (windows xp).. when i boot up and log in, all i see is my wallpaper. and i've googled around and most solutions for this involve either using the task manager or downloading some virus scanning program or something.. but my task manager "has been disabled by administrator", and i have no way of accessing the internet or anything else for that matter. i also cannot boot to safe mode, it just restarts my computer until i choose to boot to normal mode again.

is my computer completely done for? i don't really know what i can do at this point.

A:explorer.exe won't start; task manager disabled by admin.

Hello -

i have no way of accessing the internet or anything else for that matter.

How are you posting here? On a borrowed or second machine? Do you have access to a CD burner and USB flash drive? Do you have a Windows XP installation CD? Without these things, I'm afraid the help we can offer is extremely limited. Even with them, it may be that the machine is so badly corrupted that a reinstall/system recovery will be the best solution.

I'm not very tech-savvy when it comes to systems and such, so here goes...

So I'm in My Documents or any folder, really, and I right-click on an item to delete or copy it. Then, my computer freezes up [background is unresponsive, start-menu and taskbar not working], but my mouse still moves. I try and open up my Task Manager, but it says that it's "been disabled by the Administrator" or something like that. So at that moment, I'm forced to restart my computer.

I did two virus scans over the past two days, and I found trojans called "W32/Sality!mem". It's infected the explorer and DISABLETASKMGR, and many other programs. The scanner [Mc-Afee] deletes/cleans it, so I expected for the problem to be gone. But it's still annoying me! Any help out there?

A:Task Manager is disabled. Windows Explorer is unresponsive.

If you know exactly when the issue started occurring i would do a system restore to right before it happened and even tho mcafee said it cleaned it is it still on your system

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You have an interesting one.. Haven't seen these buggers for quite sometime..

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Please disable 2 so they do not conflict.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to p... Read more

I am able to boot up my computer and select either my wife's account (no password and reduced rights) or mine (I have admin rights and a password is required). I clearly got a virus the other week that has disabled my task manager as well as removed my start menu. When I log into my account I get a blank screen. I can not right click and C+A+Del "Has be disabled by administrator".

One other 'weird' item. When I normally start my computer I get two accounts, mine and my wifes. When I start in safe mode I get one called "Administrator" and one with my name (which has administrator rights), but I do not see one with my wife's name.

When I start in safe mode I get the exact same issue when I log into my account (i.e. No task manager, no right click, no start menu). I was able to get into the account called "Administrator" and I can run C+A+Del but no start menu and no right click.

I need a way to access files on my account so that I can transfer off some very important files. Is there a way to start your computer at the comand line only and find the file that contains the data I need to get off the computer? The data is in my account (i.e. The administrator account and I know the password). I can access C+A+Del under my wife's account and I can see all her files but I can not get to mine.

I have run AVG and one other virus scanning programs while under my wife's account but it doesn't seem to help when I try and log in under ... Read more

Hi Jason,

Welcome to TSF!

This sounds a lot like the Conflicker Virus that was hyped for April 1st, 2009. Microsoft KB962007 details it's implications and removal.

If your antivirus software does not detect Conficker, you can use the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) to clean the malware. For more information, visit the following Microsoft WEB PAGE

I was hosting a server fine off my computer until one day a virus took my computer for a spin to hell. After removing it my ports all seem to be closed. I used a port scanner and it keeps saying 25565 is closed, as well as other ports, but I need 25565 the most right now.

Things my tech did:
Tested if it was my IP by using a router and forwarding the ports on it. - Failed
Changed profiles on computer and hosted - Failed
Uninstalled and shut down all firewalls - Failed
Uninstalled all hamachi and tunngle services - Failed
Disabled any known ideas that he knew that would close the ports - Failed

However we ran the server with the same connection on a laptop and it worked just fine. So it is something to do with my system. This laptop ran the same anti-virus software as well when hosted.

I've ran MS Essentials, Avast, Kerpenski or w/e it's called, Combofix, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and some other things that my brother ran but he uninstalled them later.

Completely stumped on this one.

I have a windows 7 msi laptop that until recently has had no issues.
The past several weeks however, Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly multiple times when I am online. Also, I cannot open PDF files and Adobe Reader will not reinstall. iTunes won't open, and pictures won't open when I double-click them.

No error messages have shown up...the programs simply just do not open. I have the latest version of iTunes, and I am unable to download any version of a PDF file reader, but I previously had Nuance.

I have NO CLUE what to do or how to begin trying to resolve this issue, and most of my work files are PDF so this is becoming a huge problem...please help.

A:Internet Explorer closes unexpectedly, Adobe Reader won't open, iTunes won't open....

Hello and welcome to TSF,
The first step would be to try a different browser and see if your online problems keeps happening. If you are a hardcore IE fan, see if there is an update for it. As far as your pictures and files are concerned, it might need a simple solution like Disk Defrag. Many people overlook this, but hey it works! You can also do a Disk Cleanup (also built into Windows) which clears some unnecessary junk.
Good Luck!

My computer (OS Windows XP Home) has been running rather slow and recently I have not been able to access any internet sites. I have successfully connected to more than one wireless network and had 100% signal strength. When opening internet explorer, my preset homepage has disappeared and internet explorer is attempting to connect to errordns.com in the lower left corner of the window. The address bar remains blank. The explorer window then continues to constantly connect to errordns.com as if I were clicking Go on the right side of the address bar numerous times and overwhelming internet explorer. I am not able to access anything else which requires an internet connection, such as limewire or my AIM icon. I have attempted to change my homepage address in the internet connections options but the same repeating connection to errordns.com occurs. I do not have an up-to-date antivirus system currently. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

A:Cannot open Task Manager

Hi and Welcome,

NOTE:Malware removal is NOT instantaneous.
Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.
Absence of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.
You can be certain that I will advise you when the computer is clean.
Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted.
Please resist the urge to run further scans or fix items on your own without my direction.

Please do the following:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note:**In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:Tools->Options->Main tab
Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Hi, having a bit of a problem with my comp, here are the details:

I can't seem to be able to open task manager and some sites that I try to go on it will take me to another site and ask to scan my comp for viruses or w/e and I always exit out.

How it happened:

I was surfing the web and watching videos and it told me that flash player needed update and I was pretty sure I had the latest update but I downloaded it anyway and it was obviously a virus.. It started installing "Fast Antivirus 2009". I tried other sites because this one wouldnt work and it would take me to another site, and now it works for some reason. On other sites (bleepingcomputer i think) i downloaded a program called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and did a quick scan to remove 40 or so malware and it removed the fast antivirus but I still cant open taskmgr and everything is slow and the site problem. heres all the information from what you asked to be posted. I appreciate your guy's help btw doing a great job.

A:Can't open Task Manager

Hi and welcome

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk ( C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with this yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.
Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do its job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

I installed Windows Vista Inspirat a few days ago and noticed that I could not open my task manager. I went to the system32 folder of Windows, made a copy and renamed Task Manager as iexplore and wanted to see if executing iexplore launched Task Manager and it DID.

I decided to uninstall Windows Vista Inspirat from its default uninstallation program. It got uninstalled but I'm still unable to open task manager by Ctrl + Alt + Delete or by right clicking the Task bar and selecting Task Manager. The only way I CAN open it is by using the renamed copy of task manager i.e. iexplore. Please tell me what I should do?

A:Cannot open Task Manager?

That is the issue. Installing Theme packs are a bad idea some come with malware.

The Bricopack could have damaged (corrupted) Windows Explorer.exe or the task manager files.

Also changing Windows GUI and themes are against Microsoft's EULA.

Try a system restore point to a date before you installed Vista Insprirat and or Bricopack

If system restore is disabled then you defiantly have malware.

Well, i don't know what happened, but now when i press CTRL+ALT+DELETE i get the window that has: Logout | Cancel | Task Manager and other various buttons on it. Now i used this for the task manager, so i clicked it. My screen/desktop returned, but the task manager did not open. I Right+Clicked in the bottom right-hand-corner, on the clock, and selected "Task Manager" as well. It did not work. How can i correct this?
