[HOW TO] Disable Offline Caching

Q: [HOW TO] Disable Offline Caching

Hi there everyone -

My situation's this: got a computer loading roaming profile, server is running Win2K.

As I log off on the computer, this is the error message:

EVENT ID: 1525
DATE: 7/6/2005
TIME: 10:43:40AM
Windows has detected that offline caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Hlep and Support Center at

So I went to the MS Support site and found this link:

BUT it doesn't solve my problem, because I don't have a share on a separate server, as the solution instructed.

Preferred Solution: [HOW TO] Disable Offline Caching

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Where is your roaming profile coming from if not the server?

If your saying its on the server but is not shared then I would suggest to make it shared as it should be (not sure how its working if its not) and then go in to the caching and disable it.

Setup: Windows 7 X64 Enterprise, no SP1.
1) Tried the registry change to clear the offline files cache on c:\windows\csc and move it to d:\csc

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-relocate-or-move-offline-files-client-side-caching-location-in-windows-7-or-vista/ . This doesn't work. Windows simply ignores the reg key "CacheLocation" and post-reboot just recreates c:\windows\csc after
I went through the steps to remove it earlier. Syntax used in the reg key for CacheLocation is \??\d:\csc (I tried with and without the folder created manually).
2) Offlines files when instructed to sync a child folder of a parent drive mapping attempts to sync the entire parent folder. This is really annoying because the parent folder has over 1TB in it.
\\servername\parent\child is right clicked, I choose "always available offline" and I see it start to sync. In the progress bar I can literally see it pulling data like xls and pst files off of the parent folder.
What's puzzling is that others seem to have luck in getting #1 to work so it makes me think I'm screwing up the steps but I've check it and tried it twice now.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Offline Files Cache location change not working and caching entire parent directory

The default location of the Offline Folders cache is %systemroot%\csc. If you need to move this cache to another location
on your computer for some reason, follow these steps:
1. Set the following REG_DWORD registry key to a value of 1:

Doing this ensures that all items in the cache are migrated

2. Run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Once the data has been scanned, a Customize link is displayed. Click this link and
make sure that Windows Settings is checked for all items displayed in the list.

3. Once you have collected the data, set the following String registry key to specify the new cache location:

For example, to move the cache to a folder named CSCCache on your D: drive, specify the following value:

4. Now reboot your computer, run the Easy Transfer wizard again and apply the previously gathered files. Then reboot one more
time when prompted by the wizard.

1. There doesn't appear to be an option in BIOS to disable memory caching/shadowing. No advanced options, just Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit. It's Phoenix SecureCore version 0.3204.
2. Also, my memory usage has been a lot higher since running ToolWiz Care tuneup program. I don't have any restore points from that period to reverse it.
Any help on how to remedy either or both of these issues would be really appreciated,

A:Can't disable memory caching in BIOS etc

Why do you want to disable shadowing? All that does is at boot up, instead of mapping the (slow) BIOS flash RAM of adapters and the mainboard BIOS into the HMA (High Memory Area) at the top of the first 1MB of system RAM, a tiny amount of system RAM is mapped to that location and the flash RAM contents copied to it. That means any access to BIOS code is much much faster, and uses basically no resources - the entire HMA is only 384 kilobytes of memory.
The use of system "Tuneup" utilities is a recognized potential hazard for a system, and can result in either misreported "errors" being supposedly corrected without anything actually being achieved, or some harm being done to important system functions, such as the Registry. Bleeping Computer recommends avoiding the use of such utilities.
Since I don't use them at all, and have no direct knowledge of their operation, I must leave it to more experienced techs here to offer suggestions as to the best way to deal with possible problems when there is no restore available.

I'm quite familiar with accessing the BIOS menu, however, I'm not quite sure which selection within the BIOS menu I would access in order to disable this feature. I continually get a blue screen telling me that the "physical memory is being dumped", and that changing the BIOS selection will possibly help to fix it. The only time it happens is when I'm playing a game, or using Photoshop and watching a movie on the second monitor.

My younger siblings surf the internet all day, oging to websites that are packed with images that fill up the browser cache and slow my computer to a hault.

How do I prevent specific domain names from downloading files (images, cookies) to my computer while still retaining their functionality?

A:Disable caching from specific URLs?

You could limit the cache size to a more managable amount...

- Control Panel
- Internet Options
- General tab -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings
- Change 'Amount of disk space to use:' to 150MB or less
- Click Apply then OK
- Clear the cache/cookies etc
- Restart and see how that goes :-)

Also, you can change the location of the cache to a different partition with more space too...but if you're experiencing slow downs caused just by cache, you may also want to think about getting more space for your C drive as you may end up losing or corrupting data.

Hope that helps :-)

Have you double checked to make sure you used the correct update for your BIOS? It would be unusual for a BIOS flash to not work correctly unless it failed completely, but it might be worth a shot to try to flash it again with a newly downloaded update.

A:what is bios caching and shadowing and how do you disable it.

Well if its new I'd be checking on warranty - a new machine should not be doing this at all.

"Enable System BIOS Shadowing

Shadowing is the process of copying slower ROM code into underlying RAM memory to improve performance of the ROM routines. The most commonly-shadowed ROM is the system BIOS ROM. Enabling the BIOS ROM shadowing feature will result in a small performance improvement.

Note: It is unusual in my experience for problems to result from using this setting, so if you are having trouble enabling this you may want to troubleshoot your memory or motherboard."

Hey All,

This is probably a pretty nooby question but I can't seem to find any answers online.

I used to use VMware Workstation, but I've since switched to Hyper-V as it's built into Windows 8.

I was setting up a server from scratch (2008 r2) and I added the role of Domain Controller to my server, which all went through with no problems at all.

I decided to check through the warnings given in the event log and I came across the following message:

Active Directory Domain Services could not disable the software-based disk write cache on the following hard disk. Hard disk: %1 Data might be lost during system failures.

(ID: 1539)

I've tried to manually disable write-caching, but I just get the following message:

This device does not allow its write cache setting to be modified

Does anybody know how to disable the write caching? I can't seem to find any documentation on this and I'm not sure if this is just standard behaviour of Hyper-V?

Cheers all,

The last thing I did on my computer is installing "Adaware anniversary edition", which required a reboot 2 days ago, but I didn't reboot till now. I uninstalled that, but still the same issue. I haven't done anything else as far as I can remember.

I checked the event viewer, but the "error" I find only says that an unexpected shutdown occurred.

I'm now trying system restore in hopes it'll fix the problem, but it probably won't.

Any idea how I can troubleshoot/solve this issue? what kind of information can I post here to make troubleshooting the issue easier for you guys?

There were no recent hardware installations and the BIOS menu has no options related to caching / shadowing as far as i can tell.

I was wondering if anybody knows how to disable that irritating "Web page unavailable while offline" popup that internet explorer puts out while in Work Offline mode, the one with the "connect" and "stay offline" buttons.

My situation is, I'm pretty sure I've got that background downloader "iexplore.exe" virus but can't get rid of it. I've tried most of the fixes that I can, but it seems to be invisible to all the free antivirus and anti-spyware stuff I can get, so I'm trying to just ignore it. Setting Internet Explorer to Work Offline mode seems to block it, at least (can't steal my info if I don't let it online, haha!) but it keeps trying to connect about once a minute.

Since internet explorer puts out this annoying popup everytime a program tries to connect but can't, it pops up about every minute, always in front of all my other windows and always in the dead center of the screen. I'll usually just click Stay Offline or the upper-right X, but that only gets rid of it until the next time it tries to go online.

I know I probably ought to try to get rid of the trojan/worm/whatever, but I've been trying to do that for days and it seems immune or invisible to all the free programs I have access to. I'm really not very good with computers so I'm a little wary to try any more in-depth and complicated attempts to fix it, and I think it'd be much easier to just let it keep impotently... Read more

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on and

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

So, it's time I asked a question. I've got this awesome little 7eeePC you've probably read about as I babble on about it like a schoolgirl in many of my posts and I'd like to show of it's WEI score to convince folks it's not quite as castrated as some have insinuated. Only, the machine will not complete system assessment complaining about write caching not being enabled. I try to enable it but

In order to shoehorn 7057 into under 3GB of space some things had to go. Like help. Can anyone tell me what that link there says or how I might fix this?

A:Write Caching

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.

I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

Found some more info about this pros and cons etc. If anyone interested stumbles across this. To high level for me though ive only ever had 1 hdd or sdd and used ext hdds at home and at work its all servers.

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:SSD SRT caching question

hmm; Personally I've never seen CACHING to be configurable.

Placing the pagefile.sys entirely on an SSD would seem doable . . .

Hi guys, my USB HDD started showing the 'delayed write failure' pop-ups so I changed the properties to 'Optimize for performance' and enabled write caching (previously it was set to 'optimize for quick removal').

Now the HDD wont show up in any PC, not in explorer / disk management ......i have rebooted, unplugged and waited, opened the caddy disconnected HDD and put together again but nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, there is about 250GB of stuff on it lol.

This is about the worst case I've ever seen of a crippled pc. When I first looked at this pc, there was only 177MB of free disk space out of 110GB. I installed the drive onto another pc so I could run a virus scan and I also ran malwarebytes. There were thousands of temporary files that I deleted and the trojan vundo virus was found and supposedly removed. There is now about 70GB of free space. I reinstalled the drive back into the original pc and it woks ok in safe mode. In normal mode, the disk still constantly caches. The wallpaper appears but the desktop icons do not appear. Below is the HJT log. Thanks for your help.

i'm a newbie web designer, and i've got what seems to be a pb w/caching. the pb only occurs in IE -- not mozilla or netscape.

what happens is, the page loads and i go to mouse over an image where i've got image swapping set up for a mouseover. instead of just swapping the image, IE does another GET. once the mouse leaves the image, IE does yet another GET to redisplay the image it already had. i can keep doing this ad infinitum, it does a GET for every single image swap, even once it's gotten the image already.

here's weird thing #1: i'm preloading the images. looking at the web server trace file, IE definitely does preload the images, so it shouldn't need to keep GETting them.

weird thing #2: going to another page by clicking a link, then using "back" to get back to the bad page alleviates the pb; the bad page displays perfectly.

now here's weird thing #3: the pb goes away when i completely clear out the cache! if i manually delete all the files in Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and then go into internet options and do it again so that IE knows everything's gone, then reload the page -- everything works fine, just like it does w/mozilla! no delays on image swapping! IE preloads the images and swaps them w/o doing any more GETs. i was thinking that if it were a pb w/the image not being cached, a sure way to reproduce the pb would be to clear out the cache. in fact, that solves the pb.
